Abstract:Phytate is the main storage form of phosphorus (P) in many plants, but phytate-bound P is not available to monogastric or agastric fish animals. Phytase, an enzyme specific to hydrolyze indigestible phytate, has been increasingly used in fish feed during the past two decades, mainly in response to heightened concerns over P pollution to the aquatic environment. Since global phosphate reserves are not renewable, phytate-P as an alternative and economical P source can be effectively converted to available-P by phytase. The capability of this enzyme to enhance bioavailability of P and reduce P load is well documented. Phytase supplementation also leads to improved availability of other minerals and trace elements. Nevertheless, there is still no consistent conclusion that phytase could enhance protein and energy utilization. Studies in amino acid digestibility after phytase supplement are mutative and the underlying mechanisms have not been fully understood. Because phytase is very sensitive to pH and temperature, the utilization of phytase in fish feed is still on its first stage compared with that of in poultry and swine feed. A wide variety of phytases were discovered and characterized in order to find the optimum enzyme which is stable in application, resistant against high temperatures, dust-free, and easy to handle. Initial steps to produce phytase in transgenic plants and fish animals are also undertaken. In this review, the authors focus on comparing properties of phytase from different sources, examining the effects of phytase on P utilization and aquatic environment pollution, meanwhile providing commercial potentiality and impact factors of phytase utilization in fish feed.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) serves as a critical nutrient for biological growth and development but is anticipated to face depletion in the forthcoming century. The overabundance of phosphorus discharge not only results in resource depletion but also in the eutrophication of water bodies. Thus, developing innovative approaches to recycle and reuse phosphorus, while simultaneously enhancing its usage efficiency, is essential. Advanced composite materials, characterized by large specific surface areas, tunable porosities, and tailor-made morphologies, open up new avenues for enhanced selective phosphorus capture and retrieval from wastewater. This paper reviews the research advancements reported in the literature on various types of composite materials for phosphorus capture in water over the past years, followed by the recovery efforts or direct use of phosphorus-loaded adsorbents as fertilizers. It further analyzes and discusses the mechanisms of phosphorus capture by different composite materials and examines the currently available phosphorus recovery technologies and reutilization pathways. Finally, it summarizes the current challenges and proposes future directions in developing comprehensive research on phosphorus removal and recovery.

Growing phosphorus dilemma: The opportunity from aquatic systems' secondary phosphorus retention capacity

Abstract:<p>The essential cause of phosphorus scarcity and phosphorus-induced risks, i.e. phosphorus dilemma, mainly lies in current low phosphorus flow efficiency (PFE) in agricultural systems. Improving PFE largely depends on secondary phosphorus retention along the phosphorus flow chain from phosphate mining to terrestrial agricultural systems, to aquatic systems, and ultimately to seabed deposition. Our review found that aquatic systems will have the opportunity and growing capacity to retain seaward secondary phosphorus carried by the runoff, due to its location between land and water systems, its ability of converting secondary phosphorus from both land and aquatic systems into aquatic products, and its rapid expansion with low PFE. However, a knowledge gap exists in secondary phosphorus retention in aquatic systems compared to in terrestrial systems. Although the phosphorus retention literature continues to grow in environmental and agricultural & biological sciences, only 8.8% of the documents are related to aquatic systems with few quantification studies. Based on the literature with phosphorus retention quantification since 1979, we divided the reported phosphorus interceptors into abiotic and biotic groups, further into 7 categories and more subcategories. By 2020, eight categories of interceptors had been reported, increased from only one interceptor in 1979. However, most of them focused on wetlands, only a few studies on aquatic organisms which concentrated in 8 countries before 2000. Thus, it is urgent to emphasize aquatic systems' secondary phosphorus retention capacity and its systemic benefits for a sustainable phosphorus use.</p>

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for all living organisms, and plays a major role in many physiological processes. However, in recent years, excessive amounts of P discharged into aquatic environments have become one of the main causes of water eutrophication, which has negative effects on water quality. Therefore, it is desirable to implement technologies to recover P from P-containing solutions to maintain the natural P cycle and reduce the level of P entering surface waters. This work reviews the latest studies on P recovery technologies, with a specific focus on current approaches and treatment media including seed materials, microorganisms, wetland plants, and membrane materials. This review also investigates the potential for P recovery, the purity of recovered products, the technical and economic feasibility of different approaches, and the resulting ecological and economic benefits. Building upon the outcomes of previous studies, technological innovations in P recovery media and approaches were considered to evaluate their advantages, difficulties, and inherent limitations. This comprehensive review provides the basis for additional research and the future development of P recovery in response to the increasing severity of eutrophication and the imminent depletion of P reserves.

Abstract:Phytate formed during maturation of plant seeds and grains is a common constituent of plant-derived fish feed. Phytate-bound phosphorus (P) is not available to gastric or agastric fish. A major concern about the presence of phytate in the aquafeed is its negative effect on growth performance, nutrient and energy utilization, and mineral uptake. Bound phytate-P, can be effectively converted to available-P by phytase. During the last decade, phytase has been used by aqua feed industries to enhance the growth performance, nutrient utilization and bioavailability of macro and micro minerals in fish and also to reduce the P pollution into the aquatic environment. Phytase activity is highly dependent on the pH of the fish gut. Unlike mammals, fish are either gastric or agastric, and hence, the action of dietary phytase varies from species to species. In comparison to poultry and swine production, the use of phytase in fish feed is still in an unproven stage. This review discusses effects of phytate on fish, dephytinisation processes, phytase and pathway for phytate degradation, phytase production systems, mode of phytase application, bioefficacy of phytase, effects of phytase on growth performance, nutrient utilization and aquatic environment pollution, and optimum dosage of phytase in fish diets.

Abstract:China's reliance on aquaculture has intensified to satisfy the growing human demand for high-quality animal protein, making it the only country whose aquaculture production has greatly exceeded that of capture fishery for a long time. Previous studies have shown that phosphorus (P) is a limiting nutrient for freshwater eutrophication; therefore, the quantification of P flows in freshwater aquaculture is of great importance for improving aquaculture efficiency and reducing environmental pollution. In this study, life cycle assessment (LCA) and substance flow analysis (SFA) are com-bined to develop a life cycle P flow model for Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) culture and calculate the P inputs, outputs and net change in stock. The results show a relatively low P use efficiency (4 %) in Chinese mitten crab. Among all life-cycle stages, the maximum P input occurs during adult crab cultivation, when feed is continuously added to maintain appropriate nutrition levels and increase body weight. In addition, fertilizer is often neglected in the existing accounts but accounts for 24 % of the total P inputs. On the output side, approximately 86 % of the P accumulates in sediment, indicating the potential of sediment recycling as a nutrient source in agriculture. This study provides an updated quantitative method for describing nutrient flows within freshwater aquaculture systems and will contribute to decision-making in pollution control of intensive freshwater aquaculture activities.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is an essential microelement for biota. Phosphate minerals obtained through subsurface mining are the main sources of P. Phosphate-bearing rocks are nonrenewable and reserves are limited, so overexploitation will cause a shortage of P. However, releasing large amounts of P into water bodies can cause eutrophication. The problems of availability of P and P-related pollution require long-term sustainable responses. Electrochemical P recovery methods have recently been found to offer promise for solving these problems. Here, we describe recent advances in electrochemical methods for removing and recovering P in various forms from aqueous systems and summarize the fundamentals and parameters affecting the methods. The review is not only limited to orthophosphate but also includes non-ortho P and phosphite, which are often overlooked. The economic viabilities of various methods are assessed and the constraints and prospects of the methods are summarized. Improving electrochemical methods will require interdisciplinary research in the fields of electrochemistry, chemical engineering, and environmental science.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, many rivers, lakes and oceans around the world have exposed to diverse contaminants or red tides due to excessive discharge of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. The high content of phosphorus often leads to the nutrition of water body. Water resources have been seriously threatened, which has brought great impact on environment and public health. Therefore, the removal of phosphorus from wastewater attracts more and more attention. This work reviewed the forms, hazards and treatment of phosphorus in wastewater, and focuses on the methods of phosphorus-containing wastewater such as chemical precipitation, adsorption, ion exchange, membrane separation and biological methods. With the current economic and development of world, the bio-treatment of phosphorus-containing wastewater will become a research trend in the future, and the research and development of new technologies for phosphorus-containing wastewater will be an important topic for the treatment of phosphorus-containing wastewater in the future.
Effects of Phosphate-Enriched Nutrient in the Polyculture of Nile Tilapia and Freshwater Prawn in an Aquaponic System

Abstract:Aquaponic systems are made up of hydroponic beds and recycled aquaculture systems. The significant elements that determine how effectively an aquaponic system operates are the nitrogen cycle (nitrification) and the phosphorus cycle (phosphate). Because some research indicates that aquaponics systems are primarily deficient in phosphorus, phosphate-enriched nutrients were added to raise the phosphorus levels. During an eight-week experimental period, the effects of water quality parameters and microbiology, animal and plant growth performance, chlorophyll compounds in lettuce, and the bacterial community were analyzed. Phosphate concentration (1.604 ± 1.933 mg L−1) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) (1.19 × 102 ± 1.30 CFU mL−1) give significant positive reactions to the added nutrients. However, the prawn survival rate (17.00 ± 0.63%) showed a significantly negative response to nutrition modification containing phosphate, and the percentage of bacterial pathogens became more dominant (pathogen 40.51%; N_bacteria 35.05%; probiotics 24.44%). This study shows that adding phosphate increases phosphorus levels in an aquaponics system and changes the microbial community and species growth performance.

Abstract:This review summarizes the main species of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and algae, illustrates their pathways and key enzymes, discusses biological phosphorous (P) recovery from dilute waters, and identifies research avenues to encourage adoption and implementation. Phylogenic analysis indicates that the Proteobacteria phylum plays an important role in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The use of meta-transcriptome analysis and single cell-based techniques to help overcome the challenges associated with non-PAO competition was discussed. For algae capable of luxury phosphorus uptake, fundamental research is needed to illustrate the phosphorus regulation process and key proteins involved. Emerging technologies and processes have great potential to further advance phosphorus recovery, including combined PAO/algae reactors, bioelectrochemical systems, and biosorption by phosphorus binding proteins. As the paradigm shifts toward holistic resource recovery, research is needed to explore P+ recovery with other resources (e.g., metals from sludge), using a combination of biological and chemical approaches.

New insights into the growth response of the macrophyte Vallisneria natans exposed to phosphite

Abstract:Renewed interest in phosphite, an analog of phosphate, has increased due to its widespread distribution and increasing abundance in many waterbodies. However, up until recently very little is known about their ecological effects on aquatic organisms. Herein we studied the effects of phosphite via root and foliar exposure on the growth responses of the dominant pioneer macrophyte V. natans . Overall, both exposures of phosphite to V. natans resulted in significant reductions in the leaf length, root length, relative growth rate ( RGR ) and photosynthetic pigments, suggesting phosphite had an inhibitory effect on the plant growth. Our results further confirmed phosphite could induce the oxidative stresses in the V. natans cells, as indicated by the significantly increased intracellular enzyme activities i.e. superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Microscopic evidence also showed phosphite penetrated the cell membrane and destroyed membrane integrity under high phosphite stress. Besides, V. natans leaves exhibited intuitive deterioration symptoms, which seemed to be more sensitive to phosphite toxicity than roots. It is concluded that the increased abundance of phosphite in waterbodies cannot be utilized as a bioavailable P source but impose adverse physiological and metabolic limitations to plant growth, which should be receive more attention in the ecological risk assessment. Our result is necessary to build a comprehensive understanding of phosphite biogeochemical behaviors in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Recently, attapulgite (AT) as an adsorbent to remove phosphorus from eutrophic water and sediment have progressively become a burgeoning research field. Herein, an in-depth overview of the adsorption efficiency, mechanism and modified materials of AT on phosphorus in fresh water is presented. The prospect using AT as the filler of constructed wetlands (CWs) to enhance phosphorus removement from mariculture wastewater are prospected. Meanwhile, the sources and pathways of nutrients causing eutrophication of coastal waters are summarized. The contribution of input nutrients from mariculture to eutrophication of coastal waters is clarified, and the application prospect and existing problems of CWs in treating mariculture wastewater are discussed. Moreover, the paper points out the problems and solutions that need to be solved first when AT is used as the filler of CWs to remove phosphorus from mariculture wastewater. The outlooks of future research directions are also proposed.

Abstract:Elemental phosphorus (P) is key to all life forms on earth. Efficient P management and control in natural environments especially in water bodies is of paramount importance to the balance and stability of the ecosystem on both local and global scales. In the past decades, there have been numerous efforts devoted to the P analysis as well as on its efficient removal in water. However, natural occurrence of P species is in diverse forms with different properties, some even yet to be known, posing challenges to current analytic methods and removal technologies. In this review, we make an attempt to clarify the current advances on the analysis of different P species in water as well as the corresponding removal strategies. We hope to provide a new perspective for P management purpose, i.e., linking the P speciation analysis with the removal strategies, and offer a complementary guidance for researchers that are normally specialized in either field. Moreover, we envision future directions in both fields, and address the need for the development of P species-orientated removal strategies with high efficiency and selectivity based on advanced analytic technologies.
