Abstract:Micro-size bamboo particles (BP) derived from abundant and renewable bamboo resources have attracted extensive attention due to its high aspect ratio and surface area. The employment of BP into polypropylene (PP) as fillers is an alternative for biomass value-added exploration. Micro-size BP was incorporated into PP matrix to obtain composites of good comprehensive performance. The composites were fabricated with different loadings of BP (BP: 10, 20, 30, 40wt%) by mixing and heat compression molding. Mechanical property, thermal property and morphological property of composites with two different sizes BP were comparatively investigated. Results showed that the tensile strength and flexural strength of composites decreased when the addition of BP exceed 20 wt%. Nevertheless, the coarser BP exhibited better reinforcing effect on PP, and the preferable mechanical property was acquired at 10 wt% BP loading, with which the tensile strength of PP improved by 99.8%. The incorporation of BP increased crystallization temperature and melting temperature of PP by about 5°C, respectively. The BP acted as nucleating agent in the PP/BP composites corroborated by the increased crystallinity, which was also well consistent with the strength enhancement. Interfacial adhesion between BP and PP was confirmed by the morphology observation by field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis.

Abstract:Double-modified montmorillonite (MMT) was first prepared by covalent modification of MMT with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and then intercalation modification by tributyl tetradecyl phosphonium ions. The obtained double-modified MMT was melt compounded with polypropylene (PP) to obtain nanocomposites. The dispersion of the double-modified MMT in PP was found to be greatly improved by the addition of PP-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) as a "compatibilizer," whose anhydride groups can react with the amino groups on the surface of the double-modified MMT platelets and thus improve the dispersion of MMT in PP. Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and tensile test were used to characterize the structure of the double-modified MMT, morphology, and the thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. The results show that PP-g-MA promotes the formation of exfoliated/intercalated morphology and obviously increases the thermal properties, tensile strength, and Young's modulus of the PP/double-modified MMT nanocomposites. Abstract:Ethylene propylene random copolymer (PP-R) is a thermoplastic with many desirable properties including low cost, good processability and balanced mechanical properties. However, some shortages, namely poor impact property, particularly at low temperature, and large thermal expansion coefficient at higher temperatures, limit its wide application. The polymerization and post-polymerization modification are two main categories in which its performance is improved. Recently, more attention was paid to the latter due to its cheapness, effectiveness, being handy and environmentally friendly in features. In this paper, current situation in research and development for post-polymerization modification, including blending, nano-composite filling, crystal-modification, etc., were reviewed in detail. Current problems in this field were also introduced.
Surface Modification of Shell Waste and Its Application in Polypropylene Composites

Abstract:The waste clam shell was modified by furfural and then introduced as a filler to reinforce polypropylene (PP). The mechanical and crystallization properties of PP composites were investigated as well. The results show that the particle size of modified clam shell powder decreases compared with that of raw clam shell powder and it can significantly improve the interfacial compatibility between filler and PP matrix. The tensile strength of PP composites decreases and elongation increases with increasing the filling content. When the filling content is 7%, the elongation of PP composites is 140%higher than pure PP material. Compared with unmodified clam shell powder, the crystallinity and tensile strength of PP/modified powder composites decreases slowly with increasing filling content. Polarizing microscope observation shows that the typical cross pattern of light extinction for PP becomes more and more unobvious with increasing filling content, and the number ofα-spherulites decreases. Therefore, the modified powder can promote the heterogeneous nucleation of PP.

Abstract:In order to study the influence of modified polypropylene (PP) fiber on the physical and mechanical properties of curing sludge, the same amount of cement and different content of polypropylene fiber were mixed into the sludge. Unconfined compressive strength tests, water content tests and shear strength tests were carried out on different specimens with different curing time. The results show that the sludge curing effect is markedly improved by the addition of the polypropylene fiber. As to the curing sludge with the same curing time, when the content of the polypropylene fiber increases, the unconfined compressive strength and the cohesive strength greatly increase, and the internal frictional angle decreases.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is a widely used polymer matter, which has many advantages, such as rich sources, simple synthesis process, small density, low cost, easy processing and molding. At present, there has been a lot of progress in the research of polypropylene modified blending, including PP/ABS system, PP/SBS system, etc. However, the research on PP/AS blend is relatively few, and the experimental formula range is large, so it is difficult to determine the optimal ratio. On the basis of previous experiments, this study further narrowed the proportion range. Through AS modifying PP, the interface physical effect of maleic anhydride addition on the mechanical properties of the blend was discussed, and the optimal proportion was found to obtain the modified PP resin with significantly improved mechanical properties.

Abstract:Several techniques may be used for polypropylene modification,e.g.,solution process,melt process and solid phase graft copolymerization process,in which solid phase grafting is considered to be a high efficient and energy conserving method.Latest advances in the research of solid phase graft modification of polypropylene were reviewed in this paper.The influences of different factors,such as polypropylene structure,tacticity,particle diameters and porosity,were introduced.The effects of solid phase graft polypropylene system,including graft monomer,initiator and interfacial agent,as well as reaction technics were also discussed.

Abstract:Blends of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) have always been the subject of intense reasearch for encouraging polymer waste recycling while producing new materials for specific applications in a sustainable way. However, being thermodynamically immiscible, these polyolefins form a binary system usually exhibiting lower performances compared with those of the homopolymers. Many studies have been carried out to better understand the PE/PP blend compatibilization for developing a high-performance and cost-effective product. Both nonreactive and reactive compatibilization promote the brittle to ductile transition for a PE/PP blend. However, the final product usually does not meet the requirements for high demanding commercial applications. Therefore, further PE/PP modification with a reinforcing filler, being either synthetic or natural, proved to be a good method for manufacturing high-performance reinforcend polymer blend composites, with superior and tailored properties. This review summarizes the recent progress in compatibilization techniques applied for enhancing the interfacial adhesion between PE and PP. Moreover, future perspectives on better understanding the influence of themodynamics on PE/PP synergy are discussed to introduce more effective compatibilization strategies, which will allow this blend to be used for innovative industrial applications.

Abstract:Poly(para-dioxanone) (PPDO) is used as a biomaterial for tissue engineering, bone fracture fixation and controlled drug delivery due to its excellent biodegrability, bioabsorbability, biocompatibility and good flexibility. Furthermore, PPDO presents outstanding potential for general medical devices such as films, molded products, laminates, foams, non-woven materials, adhesives, and coatings. However, its polymerization method and structure, etc have hindered development of commercial applications. The recent progress in modifiration of poly (para-dixanone) is reviewed in this paper, which includes blending modification of PPDO, chemical modification of PPDO and filling modification of PPDO. Blending with other polymers is a simple and convenient way of modifying the crystalline and degradation proper-ties of PPDO. Chemical modification is one way of improving the properties of poly(para-dixanone), such as its solubility, molecular weight, thermal stability and so on. Filling modification of PPDO can implement each other's complement of their advantage, and these novel properties will develop its wide application.
Preparation of high melt strength polypropylene by the reactive extrusion process and its foaming application

Abstract:The reactive extrusion of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) with ethylenediamine (EDA) as coupling agent was carried out in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder to produce long chain branched polypropylene (LCBPP). Part of PP-g-MAH was replaced by maleic anhydride grafted high-density polyethylene (HDPE-g-MAH) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE-g-MAH) to obtain hybrid long chain branched (LCB) polymers. Compared with the linear PP, PE and their blends, the LCB polyolefins exhibit excellent dynamic shear and transient extensional rheological characteristics such as increased dynamic modulus, higher low-frequency complex viscosity, significantly enhanced melt strength and strain-hardening behaviors. LCB polymers also have higher tensile strength, tensile modulus, impact strength and lower elongation at break than linear polymer and their blends. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was introduced in the reactive extrusion process. With the presence of scCO 2, the motor current of twin extruder was decreased and LCB polyolefins with lower MFR, higher complex viscosity and increased tensile strength and modulus were obtained. This indicates that the application of scCO2 can reduce the viscosity of melt in extruder, enhance the diffusion of reactive species, facilitate the reaction between functional groups, and increase the LCB density. The foaming behavior of both linear and LCB polyolefins were studied. The results show that cellular materials produced from the LCB polyolefins have higher weight reduction, smaller cell size and better mechanical properties than those produced from the linear polymers.

Abstract:Diatomite powder was dissolved in alkali to form sodium silicate, which was then used to prepare colored nano-SiO2 (CNS) by the process of chemical precipitation. The CNS was analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. To explore the application of colored nano-SiO2 in polypropylene (PP), CNS was incorporated into PP T30s. The mechanical and colorimetric properties of prepared CNS/PP composites were also investigated. The results of tensile tests indicated that the nanoparticles could simultaneously provide PP with stiffening, strengthening, and toughening effects at a low filler content (typically 2% by volume). Abstract:Modified polypentafluorophenyl methacrylate with side‐groups of both POSS and alkane is prepared and blended with polypropylene through melt‐blending process. It is proved that this blend not only demonstrates durable hydrophobicity and enhanced mechanical properties due to its surface segregation, orientation, and crosslinking, but also can maintain those properties under many extreme conditions. Durable functionalization on polypropylene (PP) surfaces is always a key problem to besolved. Coatings with low surface energy peel off easily especially under extreme conditions, owing to their weak adhesion. In this paper, side groups of both polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and alkane are grafted to polypentafluorophenyl methacrylate (PFP), and then PP blends with these side‐group modified PFP are obtained through a melt‐blending process. It is found that POSS can result in surface segregation and provide hydrophobicity in blends. Microfibers are formed because of the orientation effect during the tensile testing, which furtherly promotes mechanical strength. Significantly, alkaneside‐groups can be entangled with PP segments, which brings about cross linking. Therefore, with crosslinking and synchronous orientation of POSS, the elongation at the break of blends is greatly increased up to 974%. The final blend demonstrates quite durable hydrophobicity under many extreme conditions, such as repeated tape peeling, ultrasonic washing, strong friction, and soaking in strong acid (pH = 1), strong alkali (pH = 14) and alcohol. The heat and UV resistance of the blend are also obviously improved. This study will develop anovel and facile strategy to endow PP with durable hydrophobicity as well as greatly enhanced mechanical properties.

Abstract:The clam shell (CS) waste was first modified by furfural and hydrochloric acid to prepare fillers FCS and ACS, which were then used as fillers in polypropylene (PP), as well as the commercial calcium carbonate (CC). These fillers were characterized and analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), particle size analyzer, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurement. The mechanical and thermal properties of PP composites were investigated as well. XRD analysis indicated that the major crystalline phase of CC was calcite; of shell waste derived fillers, calcite and aragonite. The CC was fully hydrophobic, while the shell derived fillers were amphiphilic. Mechanical property studies showed that the incorporation of FCS played the role mainly of toughening the PP; of CC, CS and ACS, that of reinforcing. The optimum filler contents of CS, ACS and FCS could reach 5, 7 and 15 wt.%, respectively, to obtain a good balance between fracture toughness and stiffness of the PP composites. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) observation indicated that the inclusion of these fillers could promote the heterogeneous nucleation of PP.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is a versatile polymer with numerous applications that has undergone substantial changes in recent years, focusing on the demand for next-generation polymers. This article provides a comprehensive review of recent research in PP and its advanced functional applications. The chronological development and fundamentals of PP are mentioned. Notably, the incorporation of nanomaterial like graphene, MXene, nano-clay, borophane, silver nanoparticles, etc., with PP for advanced applications has been tabulated with their key features and challenges. The article also conducts a detailed analysis of advancements and research gaps within three key forms of PP: fiber, membrane, and matrix. The versatile applications of PP across sectors like biomedical, automotive, aerospace, and air/water filtration are highlighted. However, challenges such as limited UV resistance, bonding issues, and flammability are noted. The study emphasizes the promising potential of PP while addressing unresolved concerns, with the goal of guiding future research and promoting innovation in polymer applications.
Enhancing Mechanical Performance of High-Lignin-Filled Polypropylene via Reactive Extrusion

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most extensively used commodity plastics. In terms of eco-friendliness, it is worth considering preparing high-lignin-filled PP. This study explores the incorporation of high lignin content, derived from acetic acid lignin (AAL) and Kraft lignin (KL), into PP through twin-screw extrusion and injection molding. The challenge lies in maintaining mechanical performance. A compatibilizer—specifically, maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MAPP)—is employed to enhance lignin–PP compatibility by chemically bonding with lignin and physically associating with the PP phase. Results indicate that KL maintains better dispersity than AAL. Compatibilizers with a high maleic anhydride (MA) level (≥0.8 wt.%) and moderate melt flow index (MFI) in the range of 60–100 g 10 min−1 prove favorable in constructing a reinforced PP/KL network. Optimizing with 40 wt.% lignin content and 10 parts per hundred (pph) of compatibilizer yields blends with mechanical performance comparable to neat PP, exhibiting a notable increase in modulus and heat deflection temperature (HDT). Furthermore, utilizing PP/lignin blends can lead to a 20% reduction in expenses and approximately 40% reduction in PP-induced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This approach not only reduces PP costs but also adds value to lignin utilization in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

Abstract:Recycled polypropylene (rPP) /recycled corrugated paper fiber (rPF) composites was prepared, then modified by compatibilizer PP-g-MA, POE-g-MA and SEBS-g-MA. The cystallization and melting behavior, mechanical properties, thermal stability and morphology of composites and compatibilized composites were studied. The result indicated that rPF promoted crystallization of rPP, so it had good effects on the reinforcement, toughening and thermal stability of rPP. The addition of PP-g-MA and POE-g-MA increased mechanical properties and thermal stability of the composite. Moreover, PP-g-MA had better effect on reinforcement while POE-g-MA was superior to toughening, but SEBS-g-MA effect was not obvious.
