Abstract:This paper reports the findings of three experiments investigating children's emerging knowledge of the semantics of information-seeking questions and declarative statements in Mandarin Chinese. Mandarin is particularly revealing about the semantic relationship between questions and statements, because it is a wh-in-situ language where question words appear in the same surface syntactic position in both questions and statements. The non-interrogative meanings that Mandarin-speaking children assign to question words lend weight to a unified approach to the semantics of existential expressions, including Free Choice Expressions, Negative Polarity Items, and disjunction words. When Mandarin question words appear in statements, children interpret them to be the semantic equivalents of existential expressions. The findings, therefore, support the unified approach to the semantics of existential expressions.

Abstract:A recent theory provides a unified cross-linguistic analysis of the interpretations that are assigned to expressions for disjunction, Negative Polarity Items, Free Choice Items, and the non-interrogative uses of wh-phrases in languages such as Mandarin Chinese. If this approach is on the right track, children should be expected to demonstrate similar patterns in the acquisition of these linguistic expressions. Previous research has found that, by age four, children have acquired the knowledge that both the existential indefinite renhe "any" and wh-words in Mandarin Chinese are interpreted as Negative Polarity Items when they are bound by downward entailing operators, but the same expressions are interpreted as Free Choice Items (with a conjunctive interpretation) when they are bound by deontic modals (Mandarin keyi) or by the Mandarin adverbial quantifier dou "all". The present study extends this line of research to the Mandarin disjunction word huozhe. A Truth Value Judgment Task was used to investigate the possibility that disjunction phrases that are bound by the adverbial quantifier dou generate a conjunctive interpretation in the grammars of Mandarin-speaking 4-year-old children. The findings confirmed this prediction. We discuss the implications of the findings for linguistic theory and for language learnability.

Abstract:This study investigated 5-year-old Mandarin-speaking children’s comprehension of wh-questions, universal statements and free choice inferences. Previous research has found that Mandarin-speaking children assign a universal interpretation to sentences with a wh-word (e.g., shei ‘who’) followed by the adverbial quantifier dou ‘all’ (Zhou in Appl Psycholinguist 36:411–435, 2013). Children also compute free choice inferences in sentences that contain a modal verb in addition to a wh-word and dou (Zhou, in: Nakayama, Su, Huang (eds.) Studies in Chinese and Japanese language acquisition: in honour of Stephen Crain. John Benjamins Publishing Company, Amsterdam, pp 223–235, 2017). The present study used a Question-Statement Task to assess children’s interpretation of sentences containing shei + dou, both with and without the modal verb beiyunxu ‘was allowed to’, as well as the contrast between sentences with shei + dou, which are statements for adults, versus ones with dou + shei, which are wh-questions for adults. The 5-year-old Mandarin-speaking child participants exhibited adult-like linguistic knowledge of the semantics and pragmatics of wh-words, the adverbial quantifier dou, and the deontic modal verb beiyunxu.

Abstract:This study focuses on the comparisons of the syntactic-semantic structures between English and Chinese middles from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and linguistic typology.The main findings are:i)The relative syntactic position of the theme of a middle causes the cross-category harmony of its predicate-argument role.ii)The degree of topicalization of a Chinese middle is greater than that of an English middle.The semantic restriction,derived from the theme of an English middle on its predicate,is greater than that of a Chinese middle on its predicate.iii)There are more verbs that can be used in Chinese middles than those used in English.iv)The predicate-argument structures between English middles and Chinese middles are different.The former is composed of "Vi+Adv" and the semantic restrictions between the two are weaker.The latter is composed of "Aux+Vi" and the semantic restrictions between the two are greater.
The affirmative inclination of the shì-bù-shì + VP question and its typological significance

Abstract:It is found in this paper that the shi-bu-shi + VP question, different from other affirmative-negative questions, has, semantically, obvious affirmative inclination. A comparison between the shi-bu-shi + VP question and other affirmative-negative question, and the yes-no question with ba at the end in the degree of doubt shows that the shi-bu-shi + VP question is one that is consultative in nature. An analysis was made to find the pragmatic categories of this formula and the differences in the degree of doubt of the subcategories. Finally we made a chronological investigation of this formula and concluded it has a twofold origin: the contraction of shi + VP+ bu-shi and the transposition of VP +shi-bu-shi. The reason for this development lies in the fact that this formula is cognitively superior to the original ones, or probably in the influence of the dialectical formula V + bu + VO in the South. This phenomenon is significant in linguistic typology.

Abstract:The paper aims to,on the basis of dependency grammar,investigate how Chinese words are used in texts of different styles to fulfill syntactic function in corpora.We use two dependency corpora —XINWENLIANBO and SHIHUASHISHUO— as the samples of written Chinese and spoken Chinese,and two smaller dependency corpora,XJ-K and XJ-S,as supplements.The results show that spoken Chinese and written Chinese show considerable difference in the word classes that are used to fulfill certain syntactic function.To be specific,most subjects are nouns in written Chinese,while pronouns in spoken Chinese.In addition,in spoken Chinese,many word classes can serve as attributives,and yet it is overwhelmingly nouns that serve as attributives in written Chinese.

Abstract:The deficiency of the semantic components of a lexical item results in high-level bounding. Verbs such as duìdài obligatorily co-occurs with forms expressing attitude and manner because of their deficiency of that kind of semantic components that will be obligatorily realized as adverbial of a sentence or comment of an utterance. The deficiency of the attitude or manner component of duìdài and its obligatory co-occurrence with that semantic component is demonstrated by the form of question, negation of sentences using verbs like duìdài and duìdài itself as attributive, object, and the comparison with nüèdài(虐待).

A Comparative Study between“de wa nai ka”and“bushi…ma”

Abstract:The motivation or the effect of expression in the flow of conversation is defined as expressive functions. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the difference of“de wa nai ka”and“bushi…ma”in natural conversation. Three types of expressive functions are proposed in this paper based on the basic rule of a turn-taking system:(A) the function of providing and expanding topics;(B) the function of seeking confirmation;and (C) the function of comment on sentiment expression. The frequency in usage of“de wa nai ka”in natural conversation between young women is four times of that of“bushi…ma”, and most of the use belongs to function A. For“bushi…ma”, function C does not appear, but function B is mainly used. This paper analyzes the causes of the difference of expressive function between Japanese and Chinese from the perspective of topic proposal and expansion. It also suggests that teachers in Japanese and Chinese language education should explain the main functions of“de wa nai ka”and“bushi…ma”to the learners. The study method adopted by this paper is a new trial for the contrast of modality between Japanese and Chinese.
Three Special Double Negation Constructions in Wenzhou Dialect

Abstract:There is a special usage of double negations in Wenzhou dialect that can be used to reinforce a negative meaning. This article examines the meanings and usages of three special double negation constructions, i.e., "duanwuyong(断无用)", "maoduanpi(冇断坯)"and "fouxiao (fou) de(否晓[否]得)" in Wenzhou dialect as well as their evolutionary processes. It also attempts to probe how they are shaped by pragmatic emphasis, grammatical logic, and the source of grammatical logic.

Abstract:The verbs zhidao/mingbai are question-barriers because they refuse rising of the interrogative mood from object clause to main clause,although they are easy to form non-prototypical interrogatives. As getting information event,a verb of this type may own both interrogative clause and declarative clause as its object in ordinary situation,but refuses the declarative clause as object when capability/inclination of the subject is mentioned. It may own both interrogative clause and declarative clause as object when the subject has not arrived at the answer,but refuses the declarative clause as objects when consciousness of the subject has not gained.

Abstract:The paper describes the context of Chinese rhetorical questions from the viewpoint of A/B-events theory, i.e., the different epistemic status of interactants. Chinese rhetorical questions coordinate the speaker's common ground and facilitate information exchange. Based on the different event types, Chinese rhetorical questions show special characteristics both in language forms and pragmatic functions. Whether a sentence carries any interrogative meaning depends on the rhetorical question's event types. If it is a B-event rhetorical question, maybe it carries such meaning. Other event types do not imply interrogative meanings. This study sets up scales for politeness, with the AB. event rhetorical questions being the most polite and the O-event rhetorical questions the most impolite. It emphasizes the importance of studying Chinese rhetorical questions in spontaneous spoken dialogue.

Abstract:A great amount of exegeses on ancient Chinese language are explanations of contextual meanings. Duyu's annotations of Zuozhuan contain dozens of "A is just like B". The semantic relations between the explaining word and the word explained can be divided into two classes. One is yitong—near synonym with minor differences; the other is yige—different meanings yet with certain connections. Among the two classes there are various situations, which need to be analysesed case-by-case.
On the Semantic Complexity of Dou in Mandarin: A Partially Unified Account

Abstract:Pre-theoretical research of dou( 都) in Mandarin has established three major uses of the word ( dou 1 : sum up; dou 2 : even; dou 3 : already) . This is a consensus and common sense among Chinese linguists. In various theoretical characterizations of dou,the word was first treated as a universal quantification operator,but this view has been rejected by more and more linguists because they have taken up the view that dou 1 is a distributive operator. Other disputes concerning dou focus on whether the three uses of dou share the same underlying semantic core. However,even those linguists who argue that they do share a semantic core cannot agree on what the semantic core is. The author of this paper argues that the semantics of dou 1 consists of two parallel components,namely the meaning of distribution and that of relative large quantity. Likewise,the semantics of dou 2 and dou 3 also consists of the meaning of relative large quantity. Therefore,a unified semantic characterization of the three uses of dou can be achieved,though only partially.

Abstract:In Chinese,speech acts are possible to cause a sentence with interrogative subordinate object clause to change from a declarative or imperative sentence in syntax and semantics into an interrogative sentence,i.e.,a non-prototypical interrogative. Four types of non-prototypical interrogatives have been summed up in this paper based on different types of speech acts. All these non-prototypical interrogatives exclude interrogative markers in their main clauses,but could include the de-interrogative markers. They also have deferent degrees of interrogative mood. Some specific discourse markers in Chinese have the same functions in similar structures. The degrees of interrogative mood of these non-prototypical interrogatives are determined by six factors from the view of illocutionary force,adjacency and discourse markers.

Abstract:An analysis of similarities and differences of the usage of the question modal particles in Sou Shen Ji and Shi Shuo Xin Yushows that the question modal particles declined sharply in number in the Wei-Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties compared with that of Old Chinese.What is more important is that the literature completed in the same Middle Period also display the same trend.

Abstract:This paper deals with rhetorically intended questions in the Zhuangzi, a foundational text of Daoism (fourth century bc). Such questions are generally meant to evoke silent answers in the addressee's mind, thereby involving a fictive type of interaction (Pascual 2006, 2014). We analyse rhetorical questions as constructions of intersubjectivity (see Verhagen 2005, 2008), involving not just a conceptual integration of question and assertion but also a viewpoint blend (Dancygier and Sweetser [eds] 2012). They involve fusing the perspectives of the writer, the assumed prospective readers, and possibly also that of the discourse characters (in the case of rhetorical questions ascribed to a discourse character but meant to represent the writer's voice). In this highly influential text with abundant mixed viewpoint scenarios, the interpretation of rhetorical questions involves the resolution of different viewpoints, which are set up and shifted in a multi-layered manner for particular argumentative purposes.

Abstract:In this article we focus on the famous dialogue between Zhuangzi 莊子 and Huizi 惠子 concerning the question whether or not ren 人 (in particular the shengren 聖人) have qing 情. Most scholars have understood qing in this exchange as referring to "feelings" or "emotions." We take issue with such readings. First, we demonstrate that, while Huizi probably understands qing as something like feelings or emotions, Zhuangzi's view is that having qing is connected with making shifei 是非 judgments whereas having no qing means that shifei has no grip on those ren, especially the shengren. What follows is that the expression wuqing 無情 should not be identified as a "doctrine of nonemotion." Instead, wuqing implies that Zhuangzi advises us to lead a life of tranquility, calmness, and stillness. We show that these peaceful attitudes are associated with the idea of wuwei 無為 in the Zhuangzi.
