An Analysis of the Reduplicative Verbs in the Wenzhou Dialect

Abstract:This paper discusses fourteen kinds of the reduplicative-verb forms in common use in the Wenzhou dialect.The fourteen kinds of the reduplicative-verb forms are VV(which is divided into two kinds according to the position of stress, at the front or at the back),VVVV,VV+result complement,VV+directional verb or a few auxiliary words which denote the change of state,VV+耍,VV+动(which is divided into two kinds according to whether ″动″ is stressed),VV+看+过+V,V过VV2,V+两[lie°]+V,V下VV下V, V来V去去?The first part describes the form features of the fourteen kinds of reduplicative-verb forms respectively, concerning the pronunciational traits of the reduplicative-verb forms, the semantic traits of the verbs which can be used in the reduplicative-verb forms, the meanings in common use of the reduplicative-verb forms and others aspects. The second part analyzes the syntactic functions and the pragmatic functions of the reduplicative-verb forms in the Wenzhou dialect. The reduplicative-verb forms in the said dialect have many forms and complex syntactic functions. They mostly can act as the predicate, and they also can act as the subject, the object, the attribute, the adverbial modifier. But each reduplicative-verb form has certain selectivity when it acts as the compositions of sentences. And each reduplicative-verb form has certain collocational requirement and condition restriction when it is used in sentences. The reduplicative-verb forms in the Wenzhou dialect often used in contracted sentences. The reduplicative-verb forms in the Wenzhou dialect don't follow the object in the majority of cases. The pointed target of the object is provided by the context. But if the pointed target of the object appears in the sentences,it is often put at the beginning of the sentences, and the sentences will become topic sentences.The negation forms of the reduplicative-verb forms in the Wenzhou dialect can be divided into three kinds. The reduplicative-verb forms in the Wenzhou dialect have rich pragmatic functions, including imperative, narration, depiction and illustration. The four functions' abilities of accommodating the reduplicative-verb forms are not the same, but descend in turn.. The reduplicative-verb forms in the Wenzhou dialect can be divided into two kinds of indicating some cases which have already become a fact and indicating some cases which have not happened ,when they are used in sentences.
