Abstract:Rural planning and construction carries influential natural, economic, social and cultural connotation. The problem of rural features deficiency has prevailed in current Chinese rural planning and construction practice. Based on the problems revealed in rural planning and construction process in Zhejiang Province in China, the article presented a way of recognizing different rural landscape styles, and put forward guiding ideas and spatial strategies for the planning and construction of rural features, from the perspective of ecological system, production system, and living system (namely “EPL” system). Such research might provide guidance for the current construction of Chinese rural features.

Abstract:This paper investigates ways of deploying ecological principles in the planning and design practice of landscape architecture. As a modern profession, one of the central tasks of landscape architecture is of protecting and recovering our environment. The profession is now in the demand in China, because of China’s rapid urban development and the consequent environmental problems. A case study of the planning and design of the Li Lake area provides evidence of how the profession is carrying out such a task. The study also identifies the disconnection between ecological and cultural strategies for recovering a particular landscape.

Abstract:At the study area of Xigu District in Lanzhou City, using RS & GIS as tools we apply Diversity, Dominance, Fragmentation, Isolation and so on to study the quantitative, fractal and spatial characters of landscapes structures in the four sub-regions divided by the morphological features. Using the Fractal Theory to establish the fractal structure models, we analyze the complexity and stability of various landscapes distribution with fractal dimension value. The spatial distribution characteristics of landscape mosaic structure are also expounded. At the end of the paper we discuss the relevant problems on the main factors which control and effect on the spatial pattern of landscapes as well as on landscape optimization and management.

Abstract:Poetry-conception is the distinct characteristic of Chinese culture. With the poetry-conception, the process of urban planning is also the process of seeking and creating the Poem-city. There are positive meanings for urban planning to rear the ecology concept of harmonious relationship between the human and nature, to break the hackneyed pragmatistic work-mode that planning is same as the “executing" according to the normative and immovable procedure, and to rebuild the speaking-power of Chinese culture in the realm of urban planning.This paper elucidate that it is a new way of contemporory planning with characteristic of Chinese culture that having a poetry-heart, borrowing and developing rationaly the “fengshui",validating it with the theory of modern urban planning(including the theory of urban ecology), and finally looking for the sublimation of poetry-conception by the inspiration of Chinese poetry spirit.

Abstract:After analyzing the general concept of "discipline" , this paper, with the diachronic method, divided the general landscape architecture history into two main phases: "gardening" and "landscape architecture". In between there may exists "a great change era" of 19 century. Considering the following challenges of China at the beginning of 21st century: rapid urbanization, environment crisis, economic slowing down, social conflicts and lack of cultural vitality, the paper calls for such a Chinese landscape architecture discipline with both characteristics of temporal spirit and Chinese culture vitality. Abstract:In order to find a way to combine traditional culture with modern living needs, taking “Chinese painting” as the breakthrough point, through the study of the development process and artistic characteristics of Chinese painting, four aspects of classical philosophy, natural landscape image, brush and ink composition artistic conception, and abstract aesthetic conception contained in Chinese painting are summed up. The results of the study provide enlightenment for contemporary residential landscape design, and summarize the methods of creating Chinese paintings in residential landscape design. Thus, a residential landscape model with the characteristics of “Chinese painting” is found out.

Abstract:The development and construction of cities and villages are a complex process jointly promoted by multiple subjects such as government, residents, enterprises, planners, and community elites. Through the summary and analysis of the practice of art rural construction at home and abroad, it is found that its events show three main paradigms in the development process. The environmental creation paradigm reconstructs the environmental semantics of the countryside through the creation of environmental art works, showing the remarkable characteristics of "the presence of works." The cultural revival paradigm maintains the local culture through cooperation with residents in art and has the characteristics of "de-artization " and "de-heritage." The industrial development paradigm adjusts the industrial structure through the production of commodity art to achieve the improvement of the rural economic foundation. Under the new development trend, the three paradigms are gradually converging.

Abstract:Landscapes have multiple functions relating to natural preservation and cultural inheritance, which are fundamental factors for tourist development. Particularly in villages, rural tourism is primarily based on the rural landscape. However, peri-urban villages face complex conflicts of urbanization and ruralism, in which landscapes are dynamic and need synergistic plans and management. Thus, this research contributes to a better understanding of comprehensive landscape planning integrating natural and cultural dimensions in peri-urban villages. Taking as a comparison studies in two peri-urban villages, Heshu village and Pu’an village in the Yangtze River Delta in China, the research mainly adopted qualitative methods of document analysis, in-depth interviews and field observation. We found that local features and interactions with nature are both stressed in the village landscape plans but with different strategies. Firstly, Heshu village’s landscape plan intends to reproduce eight scenes described in famous local poetry, while Pu’an village’s plan intends to develop local traditional customs of bulrush craft. Secondly, the detailed landscape design of green-way and blue-way systems in Heshu village is people-oriented, while landscape design in Pu’an village is experience-oriented in relation to creative tourism. Finally, it is essential to consider both the interests of local villagers and tourists in the process of identifying, preserving and enhancing the locality of rural landscapes.

Abstract:German landscape planning has gathered many experiences and become an outstandingly working system of the nation’s territorial spatial planning. By reviewing its history, values, and legal framework, this paper summarizes the experience of German landscape planning and draws conclusions for its success into four logics: 1) the normative basis for the evaluation and deduction of objectives is transparent and stems primarily from ethical and cultural values; 2) social development needs are considered in the overall spatial planning and local participation processes; 3) planning methods include ways to effective implementation; and 4) the principle of subsidiary and the scale effect of landscape processes are considered. These logics are reflected and guaranteed by the German legislation. With a profound understanding of China’s reality, the authors argue that China needs more efforts to further separate the right to use and the revenues from the ownership of the spatial resources, and build a balancing mechanism for public-private interest negotiation to ensure the fairness of planning; In addition to enriching the evaluation standards and methodological standards for territorial spatial planning, a greater attention should be given to enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of public participation at lower planning levels by establishing respective routines of bottom up initiatives and processes; Within the “Five- Level and Three-Type Framework,” China should introduce cross-level and cross-regional planning coordination mechanism that facilitates the paid supply and compensation mechanism of ecological public goods like ecosystem services.
