Discussion on the Contexts and Characters of Landscape Architecture Discipline——Together with a Prospect of Chinese Landscape Architecture at the Beginning of 21st Century

Abstract:After analyzing the general concept of "discipline" , this paper, with the diachronic method, divided the general landscape architecture history into two main phases: "gardening" and "landscape architecture". In between there may exists "a great change era" of 19 century. Considering the following challenges of China at the beginning of 21st century: rapid urbanization, environment crisis, economic slowing down, social conflicts and lack of cultural vitality, the paper calls for such a Chinese landscape architecture discipline with both characteristics of temporal spirit and Chinese culture vitality. Focusing on conservation priority, cultural identity, urbanism and urban issues, integrating green industries, and public participation and public environmental education, the mission of the discipline is to protect, steward, and create a landscape system to fulfill the various purposes of conservation, living quality improvement, spiritual habits and even production fields.
