Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite commutative semigroup. The Davenport constant of $\mathcal{S}$, denoted ${\rm D}(\mathcal{S})$, is defined to be the least positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $T$ of elements in $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $\ell$ contains a proper subsequence $T'$ ($T'\neq T$) with the sum of all terms from $T'$ equaling the sum of all terms from $T$. Let $q>2$ be a prime power, and let $\F_q[x]$ be the ring of polynomials over the finite field $\F_q$. Let $R$ be a quotient ring of $\F_q[x]$ with $0\neq R\neq \F_q[x]$. We prove that $${\rm D}(\mathcal{S}_R)={\rm D}(U(\mathcal{S}_R)),$$ where $\mathcal{S}_R$ denotes the multiplicative semigroup of the ring $R$, and $U(\mathcal{S}_R)$ denotes the group of units in $\mathcal{S}_R$.

Abstract:Given a finite commutative semigroup $\mathcal{S}$ (written additively), denoted by ${\rm D}(\mathcal{S})$ the Davenport constant of $\mathcal{S}$, namely the least positive integer $\ell$ such that for any $\ell$ elements $s_1,\ldots,s_{\ell}\in \mathcal{S}$ there exists a set $I\subsetneq [1,\ell]$ for which $\sum_{i\in I} s_i=\sum_{i=1}^{\ell} s_i$. Then, for any integers $r\geq 1, n_1,\ldots,n_r>1$, let $R=\mathbb{Z}_{n_1}\oplus\cdots\oplus \mathbb{Z}_{n_r}$ be the direct sum of these $r$ residue class rings $\mathbb{Z}_{n_1}, \ldots,\mathbb{Z}_{n_r}$. Moreover, let $\mathcal{S}_R$ be the multiplicative semigroup of the ring $R$, and ${\rm U}(\mathcal{S}_R)$ the group of units of $\mathcal{S}_R$. In this paper, we prove that $${\rm D}({\rm U}(\mathcal{S}_R))+P_2\leq {\rm D}(\mathcal{S}_R)\leq {\rm D}({\rm U}(\mathcal{S}_R))+\delta,$$ where $P_2=\sharp\{i\in [1,r]: 2 \parallel n_i\}$ and $\delta=\sharp\{i\in [1,r]: 2\mid n_i\}.$ This corrects our previous published wrong result on this problem.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite commutative semigroup. The Davenport constant of $\mathcal{S}$, denoted $D(\mathcal{S})$, is defined to be the least positive integer $d$ such that every sequence $T$ of elements in $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $d$ contains a subsequence $T'$ with the sum of all terms from $T'$ equaling the sum of all terms from $T$. Let $\F_p[x]$ be a polynomial ring in one variable over the prime field $\F_p$, and let $f(x)\in \F_p[x]$. In this paper, we made a study of the Davenport constant of the multiplicative semigroup of the quotient ring $\frac{\F_p[x]}{\langle f(x)\rangle}$. Among other results, we mainly prove that, for any prime $p>2$ and any polynomial $f(x)\in \F_p[x]$ which can be factorized into several pairwise non-associted irreducible polynomials in $\F_p[x]$, then $$D(\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p)=D(U(\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p)),$$ where $\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p$ denotes the multiplicative semigroup of the quotient ring $\frac{\F_p[x]}{\langle f(x)\rangle}$ and $U(\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p)$ denotes the group of units of the semigroup $\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite commutative semigroup written additively, and let $\exp(\mathcal{S})$ be its exponent which is defined as the least common multiple of all periods of the elements in $\mathcal{S}$. For every sequence $T$ of elements in $\mathcal{S}$ (repetition allowed), let $\sigma(T) \in \mathcal{S}$ denote the sum of all terms of $T$. Define the Davenport constant $D(\mathcal{S})$ of $\mathcal{S}$ to be the least positive integer $d$ such that every sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $d$ contains a proper subsequence $T'$ with $\sigma(T')=\sigma(T)$, and define the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem constant $E(\mathcal{S})$ to be the least positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $\ell$ contains a subsequence $T'$ with $|T|-|T'|=\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil\exp(\mathcal{S})$ and $\sigma(T')=\sigma(T)$. When $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite abelian group, it is well known that $\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil\exp(\mathcal{S})=|\mathcal{S}|$ and $E(\mathcal{S})=D(\mathcal{S})+|\mathcal{S}|-1$. In this paper we investigate whether $E(\mathcal{S})\leq D(\mathcal{S})+\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil \exp(\mathcal{S})-1$ holds true for all finite commutative semigroups $\mathcal{S}$. We provide a positive answer to the question above for some classes of finite commutative semigroups, including group-free semigroups, elementary semigroups, and archimedean semigroups with certain constraints.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a nonempty commutative semigroup written additively. An element $e$ of $\mathcal{S}$ is said to be idempotent if $e+e=e$. The Erdős-Burgess constant of the semigroup $\mathcal{S}$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that any $\mathcal{S}$-valued sequence $T$ of length $\ell$ contain a nonempty subsequence the sum of whose terms is an idempotent of $\mathcal{S}$. We make a study of ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ when $\mathcal{S}$ is a direct product of arbitrarily many of cyclic semigroups. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions such that ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ is finite, and in particular, we obtain sharp bounds of ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ in case ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ is finite, and determine the precise values of ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ in some cases which unifies some well known results on the precise values of Davenport constant in the setting of commutative semigroups.

Abstract:For G a group and g in G, we define mappings pg(G) and lg(G) from G into G by pg(x)=[x,g] and lg(x)=[g,x]. We let P(G) and L(G) denote the subsemigroups of the set of all mappings from G to G generated by {pg: g in G} and {lg: g in G}, respectively. P(G) and L(G) are called the right and left commutation semigroup of G, respectively. In this paper we will give explicit formulas for the orders of both P(G) and L(G) where G is a dihedral group.

Abstract:Sufficient conditions are obtained under which the semigroup ring of a semigroup, in particular, of an inverse semigroup, is weakly regular. For some inverse semigroups and some orthodox semigroups, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the weak regularity of the semigroup rings are found. A problem is mentioned especially which is much more difficult for weak regularity than for regularity. Only a partial solution of this problem is given for weak regularity.

Abstract:For a finite abelian group $G,$ the Davenport Constant, denoted by $D(G)$, is defined to be the least positive integer $k$ such that every sequence of length at least $k$ has a non-trivial zero-sum subsequence. A long-standing conjecture is that the Davenport constant of a finite abelian group $G =C_{n_1}\times\cdots\times C_{n_d}$ of rank $d \in \mathbb{N}$ is $1+\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^d (n_i-1) $. This conjecture is false in general, but it remains to know for which groups it is true. In this paper, we consider groups of the form $G = (C_p)^{d-1} \times C_{pq},$ where $p$ is a prime and $q\in \mathbb{N}$ and provide sufficient condition when the conjecture holds true.

Abstract:We define two variants $e(G)$, $f(G)$ of the Davenport constant $d(G)$ of a finite group $G$, that is not necessarily abelian. These naturally arising constants aid in computing $d(G)$ and are of potential independent interest. We compute the constants $d(G)$, $e(G)$, $f(G)$ for some nonabelian groups G, and demonstrate that, unlike abelian groups where these constants are identical, they can each be distinct. As a byproduct of our results, we also obtain some cases of a conjecture of J. Bass. We compute the $k$-th Davenport constant for several classes of groups as well. We also make a conjecture on $f(G)$ for metacyclic groups and provide evidence towards it.

Factoring the Dedekind-Frobenius determinant of a semigroup

Abstract:The representation theory of finite groups began with Frobenius's factorization of Dedekind's group determinant. In this paper, we consider the case of the semigroup determinant. The semigroup determinant is nonzero if and only if the complex semigroup algebra is Frobenius, and so our results include applications to the study of Frobenius semigroup algebras. We explicitly factor the semigroup determinant for commutative semigroups and inverse semigroups. We recover the Wilf-Lindström factorization of the semigroup determinant of a meet semilattice and Wood's factorization for a finite commutative chain ring. The former was motivated by combinatorics and the latter by coding theory over finite rings. We prove that the algebra of the multiplicative semigroup of a finite Frobenius ring is Frobenius over any field whose characteristic doesn't divide that of the ring. As a consequence we obtain an easier proof of Kovács's theorem that the algebra of the monoid of matrices over a finite field is a direct product of matrix algebras over group algebras of general linear groups (outside of the characteristic of the finite field).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite (not necessarily abelian) group and let $p=p(G)$ be the smallest prime number dividing $|G|$. We prove that $d(G)\leq \frac{|G|}{p}+9p^2-10p$, where $d(G)$ denotes the small Davenport constant of $G$ which is defined as the maximal integer $\ell$ such that there is a sequence over $G$ of length $\ell$ contains no nonempty one-product subsequence.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group. By a sequence over $G$, we mean a finite unordered string of terms from $G$ with repetition allowed, and we say that it is a product-one sequence if its terms can be ordered so that their product is the identity element of $G$. Then, the Davenport constant $\mathsf D (G)$ is the maximal length of a minimal product-one sequence, that is a product-one sequence which cannot be partitioned into two non-trivial product-one subsequences. The Davenport constant is a combinatorial group invariant that has been studied fruitfully over several decades in additive combinatorics, invariant theory, and factorization theory, etc. Apart from a few cases of finite groups, the precise value of the Davenport constant is unknown. Even in the abelian case, little is known beyond groups of rank at most two. On the other hand, for a fixed positive integer $r$, structural results characterizing which groups $G$ satisfy $\mathsf D (G) = r$ are rare. We only know that there are finitely many such groups. In this paper, we study the classification of finite groups based on the Davenport constant.

Abstract:This paper enriches the list of properties of the congruence sequences starting from the universal relation and successively performing the operations of lower $t$ and lower $k$. Three classes of completely regular semigroups, namely semigroups for which $\ker{\sigma}$ is a cryptogroup, semigroups for which $\ker{\nu}$ is a cryptogroup and semigroups for which $\kappa$ is over rectangular bands, are studied. $((\omega_t)_k)_t$, $((\mathcal{D}_t)_k)_t$ and $((\omega_k)_t)_k$ are found to be the least congruences on $S$ such that the quotient semigroups are semigroups for which $\ker{\sigma}$ is a cryptogroup, $\ker{\nu}$ is a cryptogroup and $\kappa$ is over rectangular bands, respectively. The results obtained present a response to three problems in Petrich and Reilly's textbook \textquoteleft\textquoteleft Completely Regular Semigroups\textquoteright\textquoteright.
