Abstract:Let $S$ be a semigroup, $z_0$ a fixed element in $S$ and $\sigma:S \longrightarrow S$ an involutive automorphism. We determine the complex-valued solutions of Kannappan-sine subtraction law $f(x\sigma(y)z_0)=f(x)g(y)-f(y)g(x),\; x,y \in S$. As an application we solve the following variant of Kannappan-sine subtraction law viz. $f(x\sigma(y)z_0)=f(x)g(y)-f(y)g(x)+\lambda g(x\sigma(y)z_0) ,\; x,y \in S,$ where $\lambda \in \mathbb{C}^{*}$. The continuous solutions on topological semigroups are given and an example to illustrate the main results is also given.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a semigroup, $Z(S)$ the center of $S$ and $\sigma:S\rightarrow S$ is an involutive automorphism. Our main results is that we describe the solutions of the Kannappan-Wilson functional equation \[\displaystyle \int_{S} f(xyt)d\mu(t) +\displaystyle \int_{S} f(\sigma(y)xt)d\mu(t)= 2f(x)g(y),\ x,y\in S,\] and the Van Vleck-Wilson functional equation \[\displaystyle \int_{S} f(xyt)d\mu(t) -\displaystyle \int_{S} f(\sigma(y)xt)d\mu(t)= 2f(x)g(y),\ x,y\in S,\] where $\mu$ is a measure that is a linear combination of Dirac measures $(\delta_{z_i})_{i\in I}$, such that $z_i\in Z(S)$ for all $i\in I$. Interesting consequences of these results are presented.

We determine the complex-valued solutions $f,g,h$ of the functional equation \begin{equation*}f(xy)=f(x)g(y)+g(x)f(y)+h(x)h(y), x,y\in S,\end{equation*} in terms of multiplicative functions, solutions of the special case $$\varphi(xy)=\varphi(x)\chi(y)+\chi(x)\varphi(y), x,y\in S$$ of the sine addition law, where $\chi:S\to\mathbb{C}$ is a multiplicative function, and also in terms of solutions of the particular case $$\psi(xy)=\psi(x)\chi(y)+\chi(x)\psi(y)+\varphi(x)\varphi(y), x,y\in S$$ of the cosine-sine functional equation where $\chi:S\to\mathbb{C}$ is a multiplicative function and $\varphi:S\to\mathbb{C}$ such that the pair $(\varphi,\chi)$ satisfies the sine addition law.

Abstract:How to give the set-solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation is an important subject[1]. The aim of this paper is to study this subject under inverse semigroups. For an inverse semigroup S and a map R:S × S→S×S, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for R to be a solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and then for the case of Clifford semigroups, four set-solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation are obtained. The solutions of the equation under the meaning of groups are generalized. This is an improvement of the study on Drinfeld problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the class of affine semigroup generated by integral vectors, whose components are in generalised arithmetic progression and we observe that the defining ideal is determinantal. We also give a sufficient condition on the defining ideal of the semigroup ring for the equality of the Betti numbers of the defining ideal and those of its initial ideal. We introduce the notion of an affine semigroup generated by join of two affine semigroups and show that this affine semigroup exhibits some nice properties including Cohen-Macaulayness.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite commutative semigroup written additively, and let $\exp(\mathcal{S})$ be its exponent which is defined as the least common multiple of all periods of the elements in $\mathcal{S}$. For every sequence $T$ of elements in $\mathcal{S}$ (repetition allowed), let $\sigma(T) \in \mathcal{S}$ denote the sum of all terms of $T$. Define the Davenport constant $D(\mathcal{S})$ of $\mathcal{S}$ to be the least positive integer $d$ such that every sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $d$ contains a proper subsequence $T'$ with $\sigma(T')=\sigma(T)$, and define the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem constant $E(\mathcal{S})$ to be the least positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $T$ over $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $\ell$ contains a subsequence $T'$ with $|T|-|T'|=\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil\exp(\mathcal{S})$ and $\sigma(T')=\sigma(T)$. When $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite abelian group, it is well known that $\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil\exp(\mathcal{S})=|\mathcal{S}|$ and $E(\mathcal{S})=D(\mathcal{S})+|\mathcal{S}|-1$. In this paper we investigate whether $E(\mathcal{S})\leq D(\mathcal{S})+\left\lceil\frac{|\mathcal{S}|}{\exp(\mathcal{S})}\right\rceil \exp(\mathcal{S})-1$ holds true for all finite commutative semigroups $\mathcal{S}$. We provide a positive answer to the question above for some classes of finite commutative semigroups, including group-free semigroups, elementary semigroups, and archimedean semigroups with certain constraints.

Abstract:Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and $k[[z]]$ the ring of formal power series over $k$. In this paper, we study equations in the semigroup $z^2k[[z]]$ with the semigroup operation being composition. We prove a number of general results about such equations and provide some applications. In particular, we answer a question of Horwitz and Rubel about decompositions of ``even'' formal power series. We also show that every right amenable subsemigroup of $z^2k[[z]]$ is conjugate to a subsemigroup of the semigroup of monomials.

Abstract:In this article, we first generalize the method of [13] and give some further characterizations of semigroups with [0-]quasi length. Then we give a very simple necessary and sufficient condition for a class of semigroups, including finitely generated semigroups with [0-]quasi length, finite π-groups, finite nil-extensions of finite inverse semigroups, to be syntactic. This work completely answers the following questions: “How to characterize the syntactic semigroup (monoid) of f-disjunctive languages?” or “What kind of f-disjunctive congruences is syntactic?” These questions are asked forward and studied in [6, 12, 13].

Abstract:This paper enriches the list of properties of the congruence sequences starting from the universal relation and successively performing the operations of lower $t$ and lower $k$. Three classes of completely regular semigroups, namely semigroups for which $\ker{\sigma}$ is a cryptogroup, semigroups for which $\ker{\nu}$ is a cryptogroup and semigroups for which $\kappa$ is over rectangular bands, are studied. $((\omega_t)_k)_t$, $((\mathcal{D}_t)_k)_t$ and $((\omega_k)_t)_k$ are found to be the least congruences on $S$ such that the quotient semigroups are semigroups for which $\ker{\sigma}$ is a cryptogroup, $\ker{\nu}$ is a cryptogroup and $\kappa$ is over rectangular bands, respectively. The results obtained present a response to three problems in Petrich and Reilly's textbook \textquoteleft\textquoteleft Completely Regular Semigroups\textquoteright\textquoteright.

Abstract:We prove a Schoenberg-type correspondence for non-unital semigroups which generalizes an analogous result for unital semigroup proved by Michael Schürmann. It characterizes the generators of semigroups of linear maps on $M_n(C)$ which are $k$-positive, $k$-superpositive, or $k$-entanglement breaking. As a corollary we reprove Lindblad, Gorini, Kossakowski, Sudarshan's theorem. We present some concrete examples of semigroups of operators and study how their positivity properties can improve with time.

On the amenability of semigroups of entire maps and formal power series

Abstract:In this article, we investigate some relations between dynamical and algebraic properties of semigroups of entire maps with applications to semigroups of formal series. We show that two entire maps fixing the origin share the set of preperiodic points, whenever these maps generate a semigroup which contains neither free nor free abelian non-cyclic subsemigroups and one of the maps has the origin as a superattracting fixed point. We show that a subgroup of formal series generated by rational elements is amenable, whenever contains no free non-cyclic subsemigroup generated by rational elements. We prove that a left-amenable semigroup S of entire maps admits a invariant probability measure for a continuous extension of S on the Stone-Cech compactification of the complex plane. Finally, given an entire map f, we associate a semigroup S such that f admits no ergodic fixed point of the Ruelle operator, whenever every finitely generated subsemigroup of S admits a left-amenable Ruelle representation.

Abstract:We study the connection between amenability, Følner conditions and the geometry of finitely generated semigroups. Using results of Klawe, we show that within an extremely broad class of semigroups (encompassing all groups, left cancellative semigroups, finite semigroups, compact topological semigroups, inverse semigroups, regular semigroups, commutative semigroups and semigroups with a left, right or two-sided zero element), left amenability coincides with the strong Følner condition. Within the same class, we show that a finitely generated semigroup of subexponential growth is left amenable if and only if it is left reversible. We show that the (weak) Følner condition is a left quasi-isometry invariant of finitely generated semigroups, and hence that left amenability is a left quasi-isometry invariant of left cancellative semigroups. We also give a new characterisation of the strong Følner condition in terms of the existence of weak Følner sets satisfying a local injectivity condition on the relevant translation action of the semigroup.
