Castability and surface hardness of titanium cast plates obtained from experimental phosphate-bonded silica investment molds

Abstract:The effect of 12 different experimental compositions of phosphate-bonded SiO2 investments was examined on cast pure titanium. The mold temperature was 600 degrees C and the casting was conducted with an argon-arc melting and pressure casting machine. Castability was evaluated by the volume of casting porosity, which was calculated from the volume of wax pattern (15 mm x 15 mm x 1.5 mm), the weight of cast plate and the specific density of pure titanium. The existence of inner casting porosities was confirmed by an X-ray non-destructive inspection instrument. Cast plates made in molds with cristobalite had significantly lower castability and higher surface hardness than those in molds with quartz as a refractory material. Cast plates in molds (quartz-cristobalite mixtures) with 20% binder had lower surface hardness and fewer casting porosities than those in molds with 10% binder.

Abstract:γ-TiAl alloys are emerging as potential light-weight, high-temperature structural materials and possess wide capacities of engineering applications in aeronautics, space and automobile industries because of their low density, high specific strength and specific modulus, good oxidation-resistance and creep-resistance. Investment casting is introduced to complex TiAl net-shape or near net-shape components. In this research, ZrO2 (CaO stabilized) was chosen as the face coat materials for the investment casting of TiAl alloys. The present study mainly focuses on the fabrication of ceramic shell mould for TiAl investment casting. Optimisation of reducing the stress in cast-mould system was carried out. The processing technology of the invented ceramic shell moulds was successfully verified in the investment casting of prototype TiAl parts. The interfacial reaction between TiAl alloys and ZrO2 ceramic mould was analyzed using OM, SEM, EDS and XRD. The experimental results showed that, when the rotation speed is 200 rpm and 400 rpm, the thickness of reaction layer is about 5μm and 20μm, respectively.
Towards High-Quality Investment Casting of Ti-6Al-4V with Novel Calcium Zirconate Crucibles and Optimized Process Control

Abstract:The investment casting of titanium and its alloys relies on a high resistance of the crucibles and shell molds in terms of temperature and reactivity. The availability of ceramic crucibles that offer sufficient resistance to the titanium melt enables vacuum induction melting (VIM). CaZrO3 prepared from a mixture of CaO and ZrO2 as a raw material for refractory ceramics shows a high corrosion resistance against metallic melts even under very high temperatures up to 1800 °C. Crucibles and shell molds of CaZrO3 were successfully produced and used in subsequent casting trials. This study is focused on the refractory crucibles suitable for casting Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-64) using a tilt casting machine. In order to evaluate the crucible reaction and, therefore, the quality of the castings, chemical analyses, investigations of the microstructures and hardness measurements were carried out. Careful control of the melting duration is mandatory to avoid crucible reactions that otherwise result in contamination of the cast with oxygen and zirconium. This was achieved by modified coil geometries. Under optimized casting conditions, the oxygen and zirconium impurity limits of ASTM B367-09 for titanium castings were met. Based on the correlations found, optimized casting parameters with regard to material quantity, coil geometry and heating power could be determined in order to provide guidance for a high-quality casting process with VIM.

Effect of Mold Material and Binder on Metal-Mold Interfacial Reaction for Investment Castings of Titanium Alloys

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to investigate the combined effect of mold material and binder for investment casting of titanium and titanium alloys. A plasma arc melting furnace was used for melting titanium alloy, and the interfacial reaction of titanium castings was determined by optical microscope, SEM, EDS analysis and hardness profile. The mold materials examined were ZrO2 ,A l 2O3, CaZrO3 and CaO. Machined graphite mold was examined for comparison. The result shows that the titanium castings produced using ZrO2 and Al2O3 mold had a clear reaction whereas a negligible reaction occurred in the castings in CaO, CaZrO3 and graphite molds. CaZrO3 is regarded as a promising mold material for titanium castings from the viewpoints of thermal stability against molten titanium alloy, sufficient mold handling strength and slurry viscosity control.

Interface Reaction During Titanium Alloys Investment Casting by Residue Gas in Ceramic Mold

Abstract:The chemical reaction between mold material and titanium melt during investment casting was studied intensively. However, the influence of residue gas in ceramic mold on interface reaction remains unclear. In this investigation, the effect of residue gas in Y2O3–silica sol shell mold on interface reaction during Ti–6Al–4V alloy investment casting was investigated. Two groups of shell molds were prepared by adding different kinds of pore formers, i.e., spherical starch particles or nylon fibers, respectively. Ti–6Al–4V alloy was cast under vacuum by gravity casting through cold crucible induction melting (CCIM) method. Porosity of different shell molds was measured based on Archimedean method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to characterize the micromorphology and composition of the reaction area, respectively. White light interferometer (WLI) was used to obtain the surface topography of the shell mold. The results show that the direct chemical reaction is very weak for all specimens. The release of residue gas in closed pores is the key factor influencing surface defects. However, open pores make nearly no difference on the interface reaction.
Mechanism and Influence of Re-dissolution of Zirconium Diacetate-Yttria Shell for Titanium Investment Casting

Abstract:The re-dissolution of zirconium diacetate-yttria shell (ZA-Y shell) and its impact were investigated. The re-dissolution rate under moisture condition was measured by a balance. Three-point flexural strength was measured using a universal testing machine, and the fracture index was calculated. The distribution of the surface precipitates was observed by optical microscope, and its morphology and composition were tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy spectrum analysis (EDS). The composition of the ZA-Y shell was measured by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The results show that the re-dissolution is limited. The maximum water penetration rate is 2.5% and the dissolution rate is 0.8% within 20 min. The strength decreases by 26% and fracture index reduces to 66%. The surface precipitates are attributed to dissolution of ammonium metatungstate (AMT) and there are two reasons: drastic pressure release or fast drying condition with slow heat dissipation.
Plasma Nitridation and Mechanical Properties of Pure Titanium Casts

Abstract:The surfaces of pure titanium casts were modified with plasma nitridation in NH3 environment.The impacts of surface modification conditions,including the pressure,sample temperature and nitridation time etc.,on the mechanical properties of the surfaces were studied.The microstructures and properties were characterized with X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and conventional mechanical probes.The results show that the plasma nitridation significantly improves the properties of the Ti casts,and changes its stoichiometry.For instance,the modified Ti casts have much higher wear resistance,surface hardness,and corrosion resistance against the artificial saliva.And its color changed into dark-golden;the TiN,Ti2N and α-Ti(N) phases were observed in its surfaces.

Abstract:By ionothermal synthesis method, a series of syntheses have been performed in an attempt to synthesize novel zirconium phosphate materials in an oxalic acid/tetrapropyl ammonium bromide ionic eutectic mixture. The two different zirconium phosphate materials, alpha-Zr(HPO(4))(2)center dot H(2)O and (NH(4))Zr(2)(PO(4))(3) have been achieved by changing the synthetic conditions, tetrapropyl ammonium cation could not play its template role to form a new zirconium phosphate and the latter was synthesized at a high temperature (220 degrees C) by templating the NH(4)(+) cation in situ generated from the ionothermal decomposition of the tetrapropyl ammonium (TPA) component. However, after adding a small amount of N-containing heterocyclic compound (piperazine), a known open-framework zirconium phosphate with 8-ring pore channels was obtained. The protonated piperazine not only plays a template role to form the zirconium phosphate framework but also acts as counter-ions to balance the anion framework. The used deep-eutectic solvent, therefore, can be used as an excellent ionic reaction medium to synthesize zirconium phosphate materials, the organic amine could be added to the initial reaction mixture to induce zirconium phosphate framework.
The Preparation of the Multilevel Holes and Analysis of the Pure Titanium Surface

Abstract:PURPOSE:Using sandblast, double acid-etching and H(2)O(2)/HCl solution treatment to establish a new implant surface, and to analyze the surface's morphology.METHODS:After being polished, sandblasted, cleaned, the titanium specimens were divided into six groups, i.e.A to F group. The specimens of group A were treated with low concentration of HF/HNO(3) solution, Group B was treated with low concentration of HF/HNO(3) solution and then H(2)SO(4)/HCl solution, Group C was treated after Group B and further with H(2)O(2)/HCl solution at 80degrees centigrade for 30 minutes, and subsequently heated at 400degrees centigrade for 1 hour. Group D was treated with high concentration of HF/HNO(3) solution, Group E was treated after Group D and then H(2)SO(4)/HCl solution, Group F was treated after E group and further with H(2)O(2)/HCl solution at 80degrees centigrade for 30 minutes, and subsequenty heated at 400degrees centigrade for 1 hour.RESULTS:The titanium surface sandblasted and ultrasonically cleaned exhibited a great deal of particles. The titanium plates treated with low concentration of HF/HNO(3) solution still had some particles, but there were much nano-holes on the titanium surface. The titanium plates treated with high concentration of HF/HNO(3) solution had no particles on the surface, but showed much micron-holes on the titanium surface. The titanium plates treated with H(2)SO(4)/HCl solution after HF/HNO(3) solution etching had all particles removed and got multilevel holes on the surface.The last H(2)O(2)/HCl method produced an anatase titania gel layer on the specimen surface.CONCLUSION:By altering the concentration of HF/HNO(3) solution, we could make different sizes of apertures on the titanium surface. Double acid-etching can remove all sandblasting particles embedded in titanium surfaces and form multilevel holes. The H(2)O(2)/HCl method can turn the rough non- crystallographic TiO(2) layer into the anatase titania gel layer.
Ionothermal Synthesis Of Layered Zirconium Phosphates And Their Tribological Properties In Mineral Oil

Abstract:In an attempt to synthesize novel zirconium phosphate materials, a series of syntheses have been performed in a deep eutectic solvent (DES), composed of tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) and oxalic acid. As a result, this DES does not act as a template provider in reaction probably owing to the steric effects of the longer chains of the TPA cation, and only the alpha-Zr(HPO4)(2). H2O (alpha-ZrP) phase has been achieved. However, after organic amine was added to the initial reaction mixture in a normal way, the additives did act as a template to induce the zirconium phosphate framework. For example, with 1,4-dimethylpiperazine as an additive, a novel layered compound, [C6H16N2](0.5)Zr-(H0.5PO4)2. H2O (denoted as ZrPO4-DES8) was obtained. Its structure was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) data and consists of zirconium phosphate layers with the protonated 1,4-dimethylpiperazine and water molecules in between. Interestingly, the two layered materials as additives in a liquid lubricant exhibit excellent friction behavior with higher load-carrying and antiwear capacities in comparison to typical lubricant additives such as MoS2 and graphite, increase the P-B value of the base oil by 27.2% and 8.5%, and decrease the wear scar diameter of the base oil by 43% and 36%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy, XRD, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry are used to investigate the lubricant behavior of those materials.
Interfacial oxidations of pure titanium and titanium alloys with investments

Abstract:External oxides of a commercially pure titanium (cpTi), Ti6Al4V alloy, and an experimental beta-type titanium alloy (Ti 53.4 wt%, Nb 29 wt%, Ta 13 wt%, and Zr 4.6 wt%) were characterized after heating to 600, 900, 1150, and 1400 degrees C in contact with three types of investments (alumina cement, magnesia cement, and phosphate-bonded) in air. XRD studies demonstrated that MgO, Li2TiO3 and/or Li2Ti3O7 were formed through reactions with the metal and the constituents in the magnesia cement-investment after heating to 900, 1150, and 1400 degrees C. Except for these conditions, TiO2 (rutile) was only formed on cpTi. For titanium alloys, the other components apart from Ti also formed simple and complex oxides such as Al2O3 and Al2TiO5 on Ti6Al4V, and Zr0.25Ti0.75Nb2O7 on the beta-type titanium alloy. However, no oxides containing V or Ta were formed. These results suggest that the constituents of titanium alloys reacted with the investment oxides and atmospheric oxygen to form external oxides due to the free energy of oxide formation and the concentration of each element on the metal surface.
New process solutions in the manufacture of thermochemically resistant ceramic molds for casting titanium alloys

Abstract:The paper provides the results of studies on interaction between titanium melts and silica-containing investment molds. Pure silicon, compounds of titanium oxides and silicides were detected by X-ray diffraction analysis in the contact zone. The problem of the negative impact exerted by the mold on the casting is solved by using thermally stable and chemically resistant monocorundum molds based on an alumina sol binder. A refractory suspension was developed for investment casting containing special additives to improve wax mold wetting with the suspension, and to increase the mold shell strength. The article studies sedimentation properties of suspension. A method was developed for accelerated curing of sequentially applied refractory suspension layers by vacuum drying and subsequent chemical curing with a gaseous reagent. The formation time is reduced from 3–5 h to 20–30 min per layer. Comparative studies of kinetics of alumina sol binder convective drying and vacuum dehydration were conducted. The process of moisture removal per unit surface of the applied refractory layer in a vacuum of 5–10 kPa increases by 2–6 times. X-ray phase analysis was used to study the alumina sol conversion during high-temperature heating. The solid gel of the α-Al 2 O 3 stable phase is obtained in the alumina sol mold shell when the calcination temperature rises to 1300–1350 °C with a sufficient strength of 9–12 MPa provided by sintering additives added to the suspension. Recommendations are given for additional protection of refractory ceramic layers after vacuuming and drying: treatment of the last layer with gaseous curing agents and application of a polyvinylacetal solution with a density of 1100–1200 kg/m 3 . The process solutions proposed will make it possible to increase both the efficiency of titanium alloy forming and casting processes and the quality of castings.
Effect of SiO 2 Concentration in Silica Sol on Interface Reaction During Titanium Alloy Investment Casting

Abstract:Using silica sol as a binder for titanium investment casting is very attractive due to its good stability and reasonable cost as compared with yttrium sol and zirconium sol. However, the mechanism of interface reaction in the related system remains unclear. In this investigation, the interface reaction between Y2O3-SiO2 (Y-Si) shell mold and titanium alloys was studied. A group of shell molds were prepared by using Y2O3 sand and silica sol with different contents of SiO2. Ti-6Al-4V alloy was cast under vacuum by gravity casting through cold crucible induction melting (CCIM) method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to characterize the micromorphology and composition of the reaction area, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to confirm the valence state of relevant elements. White light interferometer (WLI) was used to obtain the surface topography of Y-Si shells. The results show that the thickness of reaction layers is below 3 μm when the SiO2 content of silica sol is below 20wt.%. Whereas, when the SiO2 content increases to 25wt.%, the thickness of the reaction layer increases sharply to about 15 μm. There is a good balance between chemical inertness and mechanical performance when the SiO2 content is between 15 and 20wt.%. Moreover, it was found that the distribution of SiO2 and the roughness at the surface of the shell are the key factors that determine the level of reaction.
Numerical Simulation of Microstructure Evolution During the Solid Phase Transformation of Ti-6al-4v Alloy in Investment Casting

Abstract:Investment casting is widely used in producting complex thin-wall titanium alloy components. In this process, the beta ->alpha phase transformation decides the final microstructures of these components. However most of present studies on phase transformation of titanium alloys focus on the microstructure evolution in heat treatment process or after deformation rather than in casting process now. It is a main reason only this work aims at the solid phase transformation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy in investment casting. In this work, the growth model of edge of alpha phase plates based on multi component Zener-Hiller model, and the growth model of broad face of alpha phase plates based on diffusion and conservation of multi components were established. The growth competition of different colonies, which consist of alpha phase plates in same orientation, was simulated and the microstructures and their evolution with temperature were obtained. The comparison between simulated microstructures and their evolution with temperature and experimental data indicated that the proportion of undercooling degree caused by impurities in the alloy is about 45% of the total undercooling degree in broad face of alpha phase plates and a much smaller portion in edge of alpha phase plates. The comparison also showed that the enthalpy change of solid phase transformation of titanium alloy is about 70 kJ/kg. The simulated and experimental morphologies look like similar and the simulated growth rate is also in good accordance with experiment inferred growth rate.
Microstructure and Properties of TiCuZnSn Alloy Layer on Titanium Fabricated by Friction Stir Processing

Abstract:Surface modification is an effective method to improve the surface properties of biomedical titanium. In this study, TiCuZnSn alloy layer was successfully prepared on pure titanium by friction stir processing (FSP). The grain size of the titanium surface-modified layer was significantly refined, accompanied by the formation of Sn3Ti5 and CuZn phases. After annealing heat treatment, the wear and corrosion resistance of the TiCuZnSn alloy layer was significantly improved compared with that of the titanium substrate.
Skin holes of titanium casting

Abstract:The present study describes refractories which contribute to formation of skin holes of Ti casting. Plates consisting of quartz (Qu) and cristobalite (Cr) powders and Qu- and Cr-MgO mixtures were fired at high temperatures and used as phosphate-free molds. The cross-section of the castings was investigated using an optical microscope and an electron probe microanalyzer. Whereas the castings into the Qu molds were almost complete, those into the Cr molds were incomplete. The surface reaction zone of the Qu molds formed a typical layered structure with fewer skin holes. That of the latter extended deeply into the interior with a net-shaped Ti-Si phase, cracks, and holes. Addition of MgO to Cr effectively improved the castability and changed the reaction zone to the typical layered structure. However, slender holes occurred along the mold wall. The overall area around the holes was contaminated by Si and Mg. Probably, this resulted from a reaction of forsterite with Ti. The reactivity difference between Qu and Cr was not related to the fired strength of mold.

Abstract:Magnesium phosphate (MgP) has garnered growing interest in hard tissue replacement processes due to having similar biological characteristics to calcium phosphate (CaP). In this study, an MgP coating with the newberyite (MgHPO4·3H2O) was prepared on the surface of pure titanium (Ti) using the phosphate chemical conversion (PCC) method. The influence of reaction temperature on the phase composition, microstructure, and properties of coatings was systematically researched with the use of an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM), a contact angle goniometer, and a tensile testing machine. The formation mechanism of MgP coating on Ti was also explored. In addition, the corrosion resistance of the coatings on Ti was researched by assessing the electrochemical behavior in 0.9% NaCl solution using an electrochemical workstation. The results showed that temperature did not obviously affect the phase composition of the MgP coatings, but affected the growth and nucleation of newberyite crystals. In addition, an increase in reaction temperature had a great impact on properties including surface roughness, thickness, bonding strength, and corrosion resistance. Higher reaction temperatures resulted in more continuous MgP, larger grain size, higher density, and better corrosion resistance.

Abstract:To improve the biological activities of titanium implant surfaces and promote efficient early bone formation, the formation of bioactive coatings that promote bone formation on titanium implant surfaces is currently an important area of research. In this study, we prepared a zinc-doped porous coating (Zn-PEO) on a titanium alloy surface via plasma electrolytic oxidation. The surface characteristics of the samples were evaluated with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), profilometry, static contact angles and nanoscratch studies. The slow release of zinc from the coating was detected with inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry (ICP‒MS). The corrosion resistances of the samples were evaluated via electrochemical studies. On this basis, we evaluated the biocompatibility and biological activity of the sample through in vitro cell experiments. The results confirmed that a Zn-PEO coating was successfully prepared on the surface of the titanium alloy; it exhibited a porous micro/nanomorphology, and the coating and the substrate were tightly bound. The coating increased the roughness of the titanium surface and improved the wear and corrosion resistance. More importantly, the coating promoted adhesion, proliferation, differentiation and mineralization of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and had good biological activity. Therefore, Zn-PEO coatings with porous structures were prepared on the surfaces of titanium implants through plasma electrolytic oxidation. The Zn-PEO coating exhibited good surface properties and biological activity and has good application prospects.
