Abstract:Porous Fe 2 O 3 with hierarchical structure was obtained by a two-step template-free synthesis route. Brick-shaped ironic oxalate precursor in micrometer size was first synthesized by a hydrothermal process using (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 · FeSO 4 · 6H 2 O and K 2 C 2 O 4 · H 2 O as raw materials. Then porous iron oxide with well retained brick-shape was obtained by a decomposition process under precisely controlled annealing condition. Morphology and structure of the as-prepared products were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo-gravimetric/differential thermal (TG-DTA) and N 2 adsorption-desorption measurements. The electrochemical properties were performed by galvanostatic cell cycling. It revealed that the pore structure can be tailored by the annealing condition and the crystallinity can be tuned by the solvent system. Product with porous structure and low crystallinity exhibited storage capacity of 634 mA h g −1 during the first cycle and efficiency of over 90% after 20 cycles.
Gas Phase Fabrication of Morphology-Controlled ITO Nanoparticles and Their Assembled Conductive Films.

Abstract:ITO nanoparticles were generated in the gas phase with a magnetron plasma gas aggregation cluster source. Their morphologies were modified by modulating the discharging power of magnetron sputtering. The shape of the nanoparticles changed from rough spheroid formed with a higher discharging power to multi-branch formed with a lower discharging power. With a discharging power of 25 W, the ITO nanoparticles were enriched with tripod and tetrapod-shaped nanoparticles. The formation mechanism of multi-branch nanoparticles was attributed to the oriented attachment of the initially nucleated smaller nanocrystallites. Transparent conductive ITO nanoparticle films were fabricated by depositing the preformed nanoparticles with controlled thickness. The electron conduction in the film was dominated by electron tunnelling and/or hopping in the percolative channels comprised of closely spaced ITO nanoparticle assemblies and could be tuned from highly resistive nonmetal-like to highly conductive metal-like by changing the deposition thickness. The film also displayed a SPR band in the near-IR region. The conductivity of the multi-branch ITO nanoparticle film was significantly superior to that of the spheroidal nanoparticle film. For a 46 nm thick multi-branch ITO nanoparticle film, a surprisingly low specific resistance of 3.09 x 10(-4) omega cm, which is comparable to the top-class conductivity of bulk ITO films, was obtained after annealing at a mild temperature of 250 degrees C, with a transmittance larger than 85%.

Abstract:The morphology transition from primary to hierarchical adsorption-type microporous domains of amphiphilic block copolymer (BCP) honeycomb-structured films is demonstrated by a facile swollen based breath figure (BF) method. The characteristic parameters of poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-polystyrene (P4VP-b-PS) hierarchical micro- and submicroporous films can be controlled by changing the length of segments or subsequent swelling conditions. A plausible mechanism is demonstrated in this research. A typical amphiphilic BCP with very low volume content of hydrophilic blocks (f(P4VP) <= 0.050) can efficiently stabilize water droplets and inherently assist in the formation of morphology transition. This BCP film can be used for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater, which additionally has enormous potential application in the field of novel optical devices, soft lithography, size-selective separation, etc.

Abstract:Based on TiO2 as a model system, the sol-gel one step facile method is established to fabricate the macro-porous morphology films on the basis of Marangoni effect. In this proposed mechanism, the binary mixture of hydrophilic CuCl2 and lipophilic Ti-O network is used in sol to produce phase separation. A suitable evaporation rate in the gel film process leads to the macro-porous film due to Marangoni effect. It is observed that the macro-porous morphology of the film sustains during the annealing process, which suggests the creation of porous surface morphology in gel film stage rather than due to annealing. To analyze the preparation mechanism, the sol-gel process and microstructure of films are examined using TG-DTA, SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, UV-Vis, XPS and FTIR. Furthermore, the optical-thermal properties are studied for the potential applications of such porous surface films as solar selective absorber.

Abstract:Continuous thin films of SBA-16 mesoporous silica with three-dimensional accessible pore structures (space group Im3¯m) have been prepared on indium-tin oxide glass (ITO) via a dip-coating technique using F-127 surfactants as the structure-directing agent in the non-aqueous media and under acidic conditions. The porous film was then used as a template to produce three-dimensional porous crystals of iron oxide by electrochemical deposition of iron metal followed by in-situ oxidation. Scanning electron microscopic images revealed several morphologies of the porous γ-Fe2O3 particles. The detailed structures of these particles were examined by electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:Porous complex oxide films consisting of preferentially orientated orthorhombic phase of InVO4 have been prepared using a novel simple method by pyrolysis of amorphous complex precursor. The formation and controlling of porous InVO4 films can be easily obtained by modifying the calcination temperature. The pure orthorhombic InVO4 phase can be obtained at a relatively lower temperature (500°C), and the films are preferential orientation of the (200) face parallel to the substrate. The phase separation mechanism was suggested for the formation of porous films. Under visible light irradiation (λ>400nm), porous InVO4 films have shown the photocatalytic activity for photodegradation of gaseous formaldehyde, and can generate photocurrent. The electrochemical properties of the films with different crystal structure and pore structure were also investigated.

Abstract:Hollow or porous hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoarchitectures have emerged as promising crystals in the advanced materials research. In this contribution, hierarchical mesoporous α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures with a pod-like shape were synthesized via a room-temperature coprecipitation of FeCl3 and NaOH solutions, followed by a mild hydrothermal treatment (120°C to 210°C, 12.0 h). A formation mechanism based on the hydrothermal evolution was proposed. β-FeOOH fibrils were assembled by the reaction-limited aggregation first, subsequent and in situ conversion led to compact pod-like α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures, and finally high-temperature, long-time hydrothermal treatment caused loose pod-like α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures via the Ostwald ripening. The as-synthesized α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures exhibit good absorbance within visible regions and also exhibit an improved performance for Li-ion storage with good rate performance, which can be attributed to the porous nature of Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures. This provides a facile, environmentally benign, and low-cost synthesis strategy for α-Fe2O3 crystal growth, indicating the as-prepared α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures as potential advanced functional materials for energy storage, gas sensors, photoelectrochemical water splitting, and water treatment.

Abstract:A facile small‐molecule assisted interfacial assembly strategy, which combines the mesoscale block copolymers (BCPs)‐directed coassembly and nanoscale phase separations of dicyandiamide (DCDA), is developed for the synthesis of centimeter‐sized hierarchically mesoporous metal‐oxide films. Hierarchically porous metal‐oxide materials have immense potential for many fields, which are highly desired to tackle the limitations of mono‐porous architectures, and to combine the advantages of different pore scales. Herein, a simple small‐molecule‐assisted interfacial assembly strategy, which elegantly combines the mesoscale block copolymers (BCPs)‐directed coassembly and nanoscale phase separations of dicyandiamide (DCDA), is developed for the synthesis of centimeter‐sized inorganic metal‐oxide films with multiscale porosity. The synthetic approach is versatile and can be broadly applied for the fabrication of hierarchically mesoporous metal‐oxide films with single (TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3) or binary components (TiO2–ZrO2 and TiO2–Al2O3) on various substrates ranging from 1D to 3D. The as‐prepared films possess ordered structures, uniform thickness, interconnected pores, highly crystallized frameworks, and high surface areas (>200 m2 g−1). As a proof of concept, the photoelectric device assembled by the hierarchically mesoporous TiO2 films (denoted as H–TiO2) shows excellent performance, including a high photocurrent of 0.68 mA cm−2 and outstanding stability. The presented method may provide new insight into the controllable synthesis of hierarchically porous materials.

Abstract:Three-dimensional hierarchical ZnO films with lotus-leaf-like micro/nano structures were successfully fabricated via a biomimetic route combining sol-gel technique, soft lithography and hydrothermal treatments. PDMS mold replicated from a fresh lotus leaf was used to imprint microscale pillar structures directly into a ZnO sol film. Hierarchical ZnO micro/nano structures were subsequently fabricated by a low-temperature hydrothermal growth of secondary ZnO nanorod arrays on the micro-structured ZnO film. The morphology and size of ZnO hierarchical micro/nano structures can be easily controlled by adjusting the hydrothermal reaction time. Wettability of hierarchical ZnO thin films was found to convert from superhydrophilicity to hydrophobicity after a low-surface-energy fluoroalkylsilane modification. Improved wetting properties from hydrophobic to superhydrophobic can be tuned by increasing the growth of ZnO nanorods structures.

Abstract:In this Communication, we report the fabrication of well-crystallized rutile-phase TiO2 hollow spheres using potassium titanium oxalate as the precursor. The spheres exhibited unique three-dimensional hierarchical architectures and demonstrated a significantly improved photocatalytic performance. The synthetic strategy used in this process represents a general approach and therefore may contribute to the formation mechanisms of hollow nanostructures.

Abstract:Porous anatase(TiO2) films were fabricated onto stainless steel substrates with Ti(OC4H9)4 as a precursor via hydrothermal process. The crystallization and porous structure of TiO2 film were dependent on the time and temperature of the hydrothermal reaction. A TiO2 film with orderly porous structure and high crystallization was obtained upon treatment at 150 degrees C for 2 h. The gain size of TiO2 is ca. 6 nm, and pore diameter is ca. 10 nm. Diffusion of Fe into the porous TiO2 film occurred; Fe also diffused onto the surface of the film with the extension of hydrothermal reaction time or increase of the reaction temperature. The diffusion reaction has a large effect on the formation of porous TiO2 film as well as its interface texture. However, it does not change the crystal phase of the TiO,. The resultant TiO2 film showed high photocatalytic activity towards degradation of gaseous formaldehyde. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Large-scale urchin-like iron hydroxide and oxide nanostructures were self-assembled through a low-temperature hydrothermal process assisted by two-way phase transition under sonication. The as-obtained iron hydroxide and oxide nanomaterials were used as adsorbents in waste-water treatment, and showed very good ability to remove organic pollutants.

Abstract:Hierarchically patterned macroporous TiO2 structures can be fabricated via the spontaneous self-assembly of TiO2 nanoparticles prepared using a mixture of 1-octadecene (ODE) and an ODE-immiscible 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquid as the reaction medium. A study of the influence of side chain lengths of ionic liquids (n=4, 8, or 16) reveals that this parameter can be further used to fine-tune the morphologies of the products. This synthetic methodology can also be extended to the formation of patterned macroporous ZrO2 and Fe3O4 structures. Finally, the potential reasons for the formation of hierarchical structures are discussed and the implications to further research are proposed.
Hierarchical Growth of CoO Nanoflower Thin Films Influencing the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The 3D architecture of Co(II) oxide (CoO) having oxygen defects has been recognized as a highly functional characteristic towards efficient electrocatalysis of water. Herein, different surface structures of CoO in the form of chemically deposited films were fabricated via AACVD technique, directly over the transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrodes just by varying the deposition times. The as-prepared films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As the deposition time is varied, the surface structure of the CoO changes from nanoparticles that are formed just in 15 min to nanobuds at 30-min deposition, and finally to a homogeneously distributed dense population of nanoflowers in 45 min. The evolution of these structures was also accompanied by a preferential exposure of (111) facets and an increasing number of oxygen defects which resulted in an enhancement of electrocatalytic activity towards water oxidation. The CoO nanoflowers (CoO-NFs) with highest number of these active oxygen vacancies showed the best performance with an overpotential of 325 mV vs RHE for a current density of 10 mA/cm2 while having a Taefl slope of 98 mV/dec, a mass activity of 35.2 A/g, and the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of 1069 μF. However, more importantly, the current density for CoO-NF jumped sharply to the values above 200 mA/cm2 with potential less than 1.8 V vs RHE, thereby meeting the commercialization standards while still providing high stabilities of oxygen generation, current densities, and repeated cycling. Such a performance can be considered remarkable for a material fabricated via a rapid and facile synthetic route and is directly deposited on a low cost and relatively less conductive FTO substrate which can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the larger specific surface area of 3D structure and the high distribution of oxygen defects.

Abstract:Films of brucite-type cobalt hydroxide with nanorod morphology and hydrotalcite-type cobalt hydroxide with nanosheet morphology films were fabricated by heterogeneous nucleation in a chemical bath using water and a mixed solution of water-methanol as solvents, respectively. Since oxygen is around 25 times more soluble in methanol than in water, a methanol solution was used to convert a part of divalent cobalt ions into trivalent cobalt ions through oxidation, due to the amount of dissolved oxygen. The resultant cobalt hydroxides were of the hydrotalcite type, with a sheet-like morphology, and di- and trivalent cobalt ions. On the other hand, brucite-type hydroxides with a rod morphology, constructed using only divalent cobalt ions, were fabricated due to the scarcity of dissolved oxygen in a water-only solvents. Both the brucite and hydrotalcite types of cobalt hydroxide films were transformed into Co3O4 through pyrolysis without nanostructural deformation. The Co3O4 films were porous structures with a large surface area because both rod and sheet were constructed through nanoparticles and nanopores once the self-template was removed.

Abstract:In this work, a very facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis approach has been developed for the preparation of ultrathin magnetite nanoplates. The hydrothermal procedure was performed by aging ferrous hydroxide under anaerobic conditions, which is known as Schikorr reaction. Ethylene glycol (EG), which was introduced to the reaction as another solvent, played a critical role in the formation process of these nanoplates. Typically, hexagonal Fe 3 O 4 nanoplates with a thickness of 10 to 15 nm and a side length of 150 to 200 nm have been synthesized with EG/H 2 O = 1:1 in experiments. Our data suggest that the thickness of Fe 3 O 4 nanoplates decreases, and the shape of the nanoplate becomes more irregular when the concentration of EG increases. The as-prepared Fe 3 O 4 nanoplates were highly crystallized single crystals and exhibited large coercivity and specific absorption rate coefficient.

Abstract:Direct ink writing of wet foams stabilized by iron oxide particles enables the manufacturing of three‐dimensional structures with complex geometries and unique hierarchical architectures. By sintering and reducing these structures at high temperatures, porous steel and iron‐based monoliths with high mechanical efficiency are produced at unprecedentedly low relative densities for lightweight and functional applications. Iron is a cheap and environmentally friendly metal that is produced at the gigaton scale every year. While porous metals have long been used as filters in chemical processes and electrodes in functional devices, steel and iron‐based structures with highly tunable porosity have only recently been explored as sustainable, lightweight materials for a variety of structural, biomedical, and energy‐related applications. Here, an extrusion‐based 3D printing process is reported to manufacture steel‐ and iron‐based structures with ultrahigh porosity distributed over three hierarchical levels. Using particle‐stabilized foams as printing inks, pores are generated at multiple length scales by controlling the print path, the concentration of air bubbles in the ink, and the thermal reduction and sintering process of the metal oxide precursor particles. This enables the manufacturing of iron and iron‐based alloys with an elastic modulus above 300 MPa and a density below 1 g cm−3 while keeping the mechanical efficiency expected for porous structures. The potential applications of such hierarchical porous iron and iron alloys are illustrated by printing structures with tunable chemical compositions that are ultra‐lightweight, magnetoresponsive, and capable of spontaneously absorbing oil spills and of vaporizing liquids using low electric power.
