Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Surveys in Differential Geometry

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:In this paper the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are studied. We give an estimate of the first Betti number of a compact Finsler manifold. Two finiteness theorems for fundamental groups of compact Finsler manifolds are proved. Moreover, the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds with almost-nonnegative Ricci curvature are considered.

Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:Résumé (Géométrie des espaces de modules).—Dans cet article nous décrivons certains résultats récents en géométrie de l'espace de modules des surfaces de Riemann. Nous parcourons un certain nombre de métriques classiques et nouvelles sur les les espaces de modules de surfaces de Riemann hyperboliques et leur propriétés géométriques. Ensuite nous discutons la bonté de Mumford et la bonté généralisée de différentes métriques sur l'espace de modules et leurs invariance de déformation. Abstract:This chapter states the main result of this book regarding Shimura curves and abelian varieties as well as the main idea of the proof of a complete Gross–Zagier formula on quaternionic Shimura curves over totally real fields. It begins with a discussion of the original formula proved by Benedict Gross and Don Zagier, which relates the Néeron–Tate heights of Heegner points on X⁰(N) to the central derivatives of some Rankin–Selberg L-functions under the Heegner condition. In particular, it considers the Gross–Zagier formula on modular curves and abelian varieties parametrized by Shimura curves. It then decribes CM points and the Waldspurger formula before concluding with an outline of our proof, along with the notation and terminology.

Abstract:Some new upper and lower bounds on determinants are presented for diagonally dominant matrices and general -matrices by using different methods. These bounds are some improvements of results given by Ostrowski (1952) and (1937), Price (1951), Wang and Zhang (2002), Huang and Liu (2005), and so forth. In addition, these bounds are also used to localize some numerical characters (e.g., the minimum eigenvalues, singular values and condition numbers) of certain matrices.

Abstract:We illustrate how one can use basic combinatorial theory and computer programming technique (Python) to analyze the combinatorial game: Mahjong. The results confirm some folklore concerning the game, and expose some unexpected results. Related results and possible future research in connection to artificial intelligence are mentioned. Readers interested in the subject may further develop the techniques to deepen the study of the game, or study other combinatorial games.

Abstract:Lattice, as a basic object in Mathematics, has been studied by many prominent figures, including Gauss, Hermite, Voronio, Minkowski, Davenport, Hlawka, Rogers and many others still active today. It is one of the most important cornerstones of Geometry of Numbers, a classic branch of Number Theory. During recent decades, this pure mathematical concept has achieved remarkable applications in Cryptography, in particular its algorithm approaches. The main purpose of this talk is to demonstrate some basic mathematical problems and results (old and new) about lattices, which are probably useful in Cryptography in the future. Abstract:This document contains supplementary material for the main articles in our Random Cayley Graphs project. We prove refined results about simple random walks on the integers and on the cycle. We are primarily interested in the entropy of these random walks at certain times and how this entropy changes when the time changes slightly. Additionally, we prove some large deviation and exit time estimates. We prove some results on the size of discrete lattice balls and how this size changes when the radius changes slightly. We do this in a general $L_q$ norm, with $q \in [1,\infty]$. We also prove some other technical results deferred from the main papers. We hope that some of the results, particularly the simple random walk estimates, will be useful in their own right for other researchers.

Abstract:section briefly reports on the result of having only nine negative fundamental discriminants with class number 1, and gives tables for the remaining 56 fundamental (32 nonfundamental) discriminants of one class per genus. The chapter then ends with a discussion on the values of the Dirichlet's L-functions at the point 1, but this will only make sense to those readers who are familiar with the class number formula and the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis. The last often chapters is on factorisation and deals with various factorisation procedures related to the theory of binary quadratic forms, such as the SQUFOF method of D. Shanks. Throughout the book there is a reasonable number of concrete examples to illustrate the theory and there is also a fair number of tabular results; but it must be added that what the author considers to be algorithms are no more than proofs of theorems, if these are given at all. There are now many good word processors for authors to prepare "camera-ready" versions of their manuscripts. This is a new found freedom, but there is also an important responsibility associated with this freedom, and authors should seek proper advice and assistance from experts until they have mastered the skilful art of typesetting. The author here uses Tr^X, the most sophisticated computer typesetting program specially designed for mathematics printing, but he has left many glaring faults such as, to name the serious ones, the erratic "baselineskips" after each displayed formula, the distraction of an unacceptably large number of hyphenated words on many pages, and the lack of use of "ties" to prevent silly breaks.
