Abstract:This is the first volume of a textbook for a two-semester course in mathematical analysis. This first volume is about analysis of functions of a single variable. The topics covered include completeness axiom, Archimedean property, sequentially compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}$, limits of functions, continuous functions, intermediate value theorem, extreme value theorem, differentiation, mean value theorem, l'Hopital's rule, Riemann integrals, improper integrals, elementary transcendental functions, sequences and series of numbers, infinite products, sequences and series of functions, uniform convergence, power series, Taylor series and Taylor polynomials. At the end of the book, we include some classical examples such as the irrationality of the number $e$, the existence of a non-analytic infinitely differentiable function, the existence of a nowhere differentiable continuous function. The book is concluded with the proof of the Weierstrass approximation theorem.

Abstract:Mathematical concepts and tools have shaped the field of visualization in fundamental ways and played a key role in the development of a large variety of visualization techniques. In this chapter, we sample the visualization literature to provide a taxonomy of the usage of mathematics in visualization, and to identify a fundamental set of mathematics that should be taught to students as part of an introduction to contemporary visualization research. Within the scope of this chapter, we are unable to provide a full review of all mathematical foundations of visualization; rather, we identify a number of concepts that are useful in visualization, explain their significance, and provide references for further reading.

Abstract:This textbook introduces fundamental concepts, major models, and popular applications of pattern recognition for a one-semester undergraduate course. To ensure student understanding, the text focuses on a relatively small number of core concepts with an abundance of illustrations and examples. Concepts are reinforced with hands-on exercises to nurture the student's skill in problem solving. New concepts and algorithms are framed by real-world context and established as part of the big picture introduced in an early chapter. A problem-solving strategy is employed in several chapters to equip students with an approach for new problems in pattern recognition. This text also points out common errors that a new player in pattern recognition may encounter, and fosters the ability for readers to find useful resources and independently solve a new pattern recognition task through various working examples. Students with an undergraduate understanding of mathematical analysis, linear algebra, and probability will be well prepared to master the concepts and mathematical analysis presented here.

Abstract:The various characteristics of meromorphic functions are main tool in the study of value distribution of meromorphic functions this book will introduce. They are real-valued functions defined on the positive real axis. In this chapter, we discuss certain properties of such real functions for application in later chapters. We begin with the order and the lower order of such functions which include the proximate order and the type function. We discuss the existence of the Polya peak sequence. Also, we identify a sequence of positive numbers with some of the Polya peak properties. We mainly introduce a result of Edrei and Fuchs for the regularity, thereby, improving the lemma of Borel and quasi-invariance of inequalities of two real functions under differentiation and integration. Finally, we exhibit the Green formula and collect several integral inequalities.

Abstract:This is a book on elementary mathematics suitable to use in courses for first-year students of science and engineering. Students often find the formal approach to math courses rather discouraging, and demand 'rel-life applications' in order to grasp the need for these courses. The text has plenty of such applications, treated with the free software Maxima (a CAS) and Geogebra (a DGS). Its level is more or less that of a 'Pre-Calculus' course, but the contents and style of presentation are different in that they are determined by the applications in each chapter.

Abstract:The objective of this textbook is the construction, analysis, and interpretation of mathematical models to help us understand the world we live in. Rather than follow a case study approach it develops the mathematical and physical ideas that are fundamental in understanding contemporary problems in science and engineering. Science evolves, and this means that the problems of current interest continually change. What does not change as quickly is the approach used to derive the relevant mathematical models, and the methods used to analyze the models. Consequently, this book is written in such a way as to establish the mathematical ideas underlying model development independently of a specific application. This does not mean applications are not considered, they are, and connections with experiment are a staple of this book. The book, as well as the individual chapters, is written in such a way that the material becomes more sophisticated as you progress. This provides some flexibility in how the book is used, allowing consideration for the breadth and depth of the material covered. Moreover, there are a wide spectrum of exercises and detailed illustrations that significantly enrich the material. Abstract:This book is organized into eight chapters. The first three gently introduce the basic principles of hybrid high-order methods on a linear diffusion problem, the key ideas underlying the mathematical analysis, and some useful variants of the method as well as links to other methods from the literature. The following four present various challenging applications to solid mechanics, including linear elasticity and hyperelasticity, elastodynamics, contact/friction, and plasticity. The last chapter reviews implementation aspects. This book is primarily intended for graduate students, researchers (in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and computational mechanics), and engineers working in related fields of application. Basic knowledge of the devising and analysis of finite element methods is assumed. Special effort was made to streamline the presentation so as to pinpoint the essential ideas, address key mathematical aspects, present examples, and provide bibliographic pointers.
