Abstract:An impossibility theorem on approximately simulating quantum non-integrable Hamiltonian systems is presented here. This result shows that there is a trade-off between the unitary property and the energy expectation conservation law in time-discretization of quantum non-integrable systems, whose classical counterpart is Ge-Marsden’s impossibility result about simulating classically non-integrable Hamiltonian systems using integration schemes preserving symplectic (Lie-Poisson) property.

Introduction to contact complete integrability

Abstract:Integrable Hamiltonian systems on symplectic manifolds have been well-studied. However, an intrinsic property of these kind of systems is that they can only live on even dimensional manifolds. To introduce a similar notion of integrability on odd dimensional manifolds, one needs another type of geometry: contact geometry. These lecture notes, aimed towards graduate students, serve as an introduction to this form of integrabilty. We will start by introducing the necessary concepts from contact geometry, which is the sister geometry of symplectic geometry. In the third chapter, we discuss the contact Hamiltonian vector field (which is similar to the standard Hamiltonian vector field) and the Jacobi bracket (which has similar dynamical properties as the Poisson bracket in the symplectic world). After this, we are able to introduce contact complete integrability: there exist (at least) two different notions of such integrability in the literature: one by Khesin & Tabachnikov (which has a more geometric nature) and one by Jovanovic & Jovanovic. We will show that both notions coincide. Subsequently, we will give an overview of the semi-local aspects of contact complete integrability, namely the behaviour of the dynamics near regular fibres (an Arnold-Liouville-like theorem by Jovanovic) and singular fibres (a local normal form as described by Miranda). Finally, we will introduce contact toric G-manifolds, which where classified by Lerman in 2003 (similar to the Delzant-classification of toric integrable systems). Throughout these notes, we will focus on the link with integrable Hamiltonian systems in symplectic geometry.

Abstract:Type 1 computability -- computability based on the use of numberings -- is one of several ways of developing systematically computable mathematics. This approach can be considered particularly important since it is the one that focuses on finite descriptions. The study of Type 1 computability of topological spaces can be understood as the study of topological spaces some of whose open sets admit finite descriptions. We define Type 1 computable topological spaces without making reference to a basis. Following work of Spreen, we show that the use of a formal inclusion relation should be systematized. We give the first general definition of the computable topology associated to a computable metric that does not rely on effective separability. This definition can be translated to other constructive settings, and its relevance goes beyond that of Type 1 computability. We also compare different notions of effective basis. The first one, introduced by Nogina, is based on an effective version of the statement ``a set $O$ is open if for any point in $O$, there is a basic set containing that point and contained in $O$''. The second one, associated to Lacombe, is based on an effective version of ``a set $O$ is open if it can be written as a union of basic open sets''. We show that neither of the notions of basis we thus obtain is completely satisfactory. We define a new notion of basis, based on an effective version of the Nogina statement, but using a formal inclusion relation. Finally, we obtain a new version of the theorem of Moschovakis which states that the Lacombe and Nogina approaches coincide on countable recursive Polish spaces, but which applies to sets equipped with non-onto numberings, and with effective separability as a sole hypothesis.

Abstract:Different definitions of integrability, as a rule, use linearization of initial equation and/or expansion on some basic functions which are themselves solutions of some linear differential equation. Important fact here is that linearization of some differential equation is its simplification but not solving yet. For instance, in case of linear Schroedinger equation, we are not able to find its solutions explicitly but only to name them Jost functions and to exploit their useful properties (see previous Chapters). On the other hand, well-known fact is that for LODE with constant coefficients operator itself can always be factorized into first-order factors and thus the problem is reduced to the solving of a few first-order LODEs which are solvable in quadratures. In case of differential operators with variable coefficients factorization is not always possible but for the great number of operators BK-factorization gives factorization conditions explicitly which we are going to demonstrate in this Chapter. BK factorization is used to construct set of invariants for LPDO of arbitrary order; interconnections of these new invariants with classic Laplace invariants for second order hyperbolic LPDOs are discussed.

Abstract:Integrable quantum computation is defined as quantum computing via the integrable condition, in which two-qubit gates are either nontrivial unitary solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation or the Swap gate (permutation). To make the definition clear, in this article, we explore the physics underlying the quantum circuit model, and then present a unified description on both quantum computing via the Bethe ansatz and quantum computing via the Yang--Baxter equation.

Abstract:This monograph introduces the theory of generalized homogeneous systems governed by differential equations in both Euclidean (finite-dimensional) and Banach/Hilbert (infinite-dimensional) spaces. It develops methods of stability and robustness analysis, control design, state estimation and discretization of homogeneous control systems. Generalized Homogeneity in Systems and Control is structured in two parts. Part I discusses various models of control systems and related tools for their analysis, including Lyapunov functions. Part II deals with the analysis and design of homogeneous control systems. Some of the key features of the text include: mathematical models of dynamical systems in finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces; the theory of linear dilations in Banach spaces; homogeneous control and estimation; simple methods for an "upgrade" of existing linear control laws; numerical schemes for a consistent digital implementation of homogeneous algorithms; and experiments confirming an improvement of PID controllers. The advanced mathematical material will be of interest to researchers, mathematicians working in control theory and mathematically oriented control engineers.
A generalization of Markov's approach to the continuity problem for Type 1 computable functions

Abstract:We axiomatize and generalize Markov's approach to the continuity problem for Type 1 computable functions, i.e. the problem of finding sufficient conditions on a computable topological space to obtain a theorem of the form "computable functions are (effectively) continuous". We introduce different notions of effective closure. These notions of effective closure lead to different notions of effective discontinuity at a point. We give conditions that prevent computable functions from having effective discontinuities. We finally show that results that forbid effective discontinuities can be turned into (abstract) continuity results on spaces where the closure and effective closure of semi-decidable sets naturally coincide. This happens for instance on spaces which admit a dense and computable sequence.

Abstract:A compact set has computable type if any homeomorphic copy of the set which is semicomputable is actually computable. Miller proved that finite-dimensional spheres have computable type, Iljazović and other authors established the property for many other sets, such as manifolds. In this article we propose a theoretical study of the notion of computable type, in order to improve our general understanding of this notion and to provide tools to prove or disprove this property. We first show that the definitions of computable type that were distinguished in the literature, involving metric spaces and Hausdorff spaces respectively, are actually equivalent. We argue that the stronger, relativized version of computable type, is better behaved and prone to topological analysis. We obtain characterizations of strong computable type, related to the descriptive complexity of topological invariants, as well as purely topological criteria. We study two families of topological invariants of low descriptive complexity, expressing the extensibility and the null-homotopy of continuous functions. We apply the theory to revisit previous results and obtain new ones.

Abstract:This monograph, written for educational purposes, serves as an introduction to the concept of integrability as it applies to systems of differential equations (both ordinary and partial) as well as to vector-valued fields. The general cases of integrability examined are: path-independence of line integrals of vector fields on the plane and in space; integration of systems of ordinary differential equations by using first integrals; and integrable systems of partial differential equations. Special topics include the integration of analytic functions on the complex plane and some elements from the geometric theory of differential systems. Certain more advanced subjects, such as Lax pairs and Bäcklund transformations, are also discussed.

Abstract:Integrable structures arise in general relativity when the spacetime possesses a pair of commuting Killing vectors admitting 2-spaces orthogonal to the group orbits. The physical interpretation of such spacetimes depends on the norm of the Killing vectors. They include stationary axisymmetric spacetimes, Einstein-Rosen waves with two polarizations, Gowdy models, and colliding plane gravitational waves. We review the general formalism of linear systems with variable spectral parameter, solution generating techniques, and various classes of exact solutions. In the case of the Einstein-Rosen waves, we also discuss the Poisson algebra of charges and its quantization. This is an invited contribution to the 2nd edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics.

Abstract:Quantum canonical transformations are defined in analogy to classical canonical transformations as changes of the phase space variables which preserve the Dirac bracket structure. In themselves, they are neither unitary nor non-unitary. A definition of quantum integrability in terms of canonical transformations is proposed which includes systems which have fewer commuting integrals of motion than degrees of freedom. The important role of non-unitary transformations in integrability is discussed.

Abstract:The quantum brachistochrone problem addresses the fundamental challenge of achieving the quantum speed limit in applications aiming to realize a given unitary operation in a quantum system. Specifically, it looks into optimization of the transformation of quantum states through controlled Hamiltonians, which form a small subset in the space of the system's observables. Here we introduce a broad family of completely integrable brachistochrone protocols, which arise from a judicious choice of the control Hamiltonian subset. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the inherent stability of the completely integrable protocols makes them numerically tractable and therefore practicable as opposed to their non-integrable counterparts.
