Abstract:A frequency detector (FD) based on a resembling state-machine controller (RSMC) is proposed. With a RSMC, the proposed FD can improve both precision and response speed with no external components. The precision is dependent on the maximum variations of critical frequency, while the response speed is defined as detecting time needed to invert output when the detected frequency is changed. Besides, the FD can also self-adjust its detecting time in accordance with the frequency. A frequency-programmable circuit (FPC) is added in the FD to achieve frequency programmability. The proposed FD has been designed and implemented by using SMIC18pf process (LMIN=0.18µm) which has four metal layers and one poly layer, occupying silicon area of 0.071 mm2 (without ESD and pads). The simulation results indicate that the detecting frequency variation is-15%~+20% for low frequency edge at center frequency of FL=2MHz and - 12%~+20% for high frequency edge at center frequency of FH=7.5MHz. The detecting time is TL=15.53µs for FL=2MHz and TH=2.3µs for FH=7.5MHz. The 3.3V analog power dissipation is 59.8uW while the 1.8V digital power dissipation is 6.4uW.
