Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:Assume two finite families $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$ of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$ have the property that $A\cap B\ne \emptyset$ for every $A \in \mathcal A$ and $B\in \mathcal B$. Is there a constant $\gamma >0$ (independent of $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$) such that there is a line intersecting $\gamma|\mathcal A|$ sets in $\mathcal A$ or $\gamma|\mathcal B|$ sets in $\mathcal B$? This is an intriguing Helly-type question from a paper by Martínez, Roldan and Rubin. We confirm this in the special case when all sets in $\mathcal A$ lie in parallel planes and all sets in $\mathcal B$ lie in parallel planes; in fact, all sets from one of the two families has a line transversal.

Piercing All Translates of a Set of Axis-Parallel Rectangles

Abstract:For a given shape $S$ in the plane, one can ask what is the lowest possible density of a point set $P$ that pierces ("intersects", "hits") all translates of $S$. This is equivalent to determining the covering density of $S$ and as such is well studied. Here we study the analogous question for families of shapes where the connection to covering is altered. That is, we require that a single point set $P$ simultaneously pierces each translate of each shape from some family $\mathcal{F}$. We denote the lowest possible density of such an $\mathcal{F}$-piercing point set by $\pi_T(\mathcal{F})$. Specifically, we focus on families $\mathcal{F}$ consisting of axis-parallel rectangles. When $|\mathcal{F}|=2$ we exactly solve the case when one rectangle is more squarish than $2\times 1$, and give bounds (within $10\,\%$ of each other) for the remaining case when one rectangle is wide and the other one is tall. When $|\mathcal{F}|\ge 2$ we present a linear-time constant-factor approximation algorithm for computing $\pi_T(\mathcal{F})$ (with ratio $1.895$).

Abstract:An infinite sequence of sets $\left\{B_{n}\right\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ is said to be a heterochromatic sequence from an infinite sequence of families $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n} \right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$, if there exists a strictly increasing sequence of natural numbers $\left\{ i_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ such that for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$ we have $B_{n} \in \mathcal{F}_{i_{n}}$. In this paper, we have proved that if for each $n\in\mathbb{N}$, $\mathcal{F}_n$ is a family of {\em nicely shaped} convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that each heterochromatic sequence $\left\{B_{n}\right\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ from $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n} \right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ contains at least $k+2$ sets that can be pierced by a single $k$-flat ($k$-dimensional affine space) then all but finitely many families in $\left\{\mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ can be pierced by finitely many $k$-flats. This result can be considered as a {\em countably colorful} generalization of the $(\aleph_0, k+2)$-theorem proved by Keller and Perles (Symposium on Computational Geometry 2022). We have also established the tightness of our result by proving a number of no-go theorems.

Abstract:In this note we study a conjecture by Jerónimo-Castro, Magazinov and Soberón which generalized a question posed by Dol'nikov. Let $F_1,F_2,\dots,F_n$ be families of translates of a convex compact set $K$ in the plane so that each two sets from distinct families intersect. We show that, for some $j$, $\bigcup_{i\neq j}F_i$ can be pierced by at most $4$ points. To do so, we use previous ideas from Gomez-Navarro and Roldán-Pensado together with an approximation result closely tied to the Banach-Mazur distance to the square.

Abstract:The Hadwiger-Debrunner number $HD_d(p,q)$ is the minimal size of a piercing set that can always be guaranteed for a family of compact convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that satisfies the $(p,q)$ property. Hadwiger and Debrunner showed that $HD_d(p,q) \geq p-q+1$ for all $q$, and equality is attained for $q > \frac{d-1}{d}p +1$. Almost tight upper bounds for $HD_d(p,q)$ for a `sufficiently large' $q$ were obtained recently using an enhancement of the celebrated Alon-Kleitman theorem, but no sharp upper bounds for a general $q$ are known. In [L. Montejano and P. Soberón, Piercing numbers for balanced and unbalanced families, Disc. Comput. Geom., 45(2) (2011), pp. 358-364], Montejano and Soberón defined a refinement of the $(p,q)$ property: $F$ satisfies the $(p,q)_r$ property if among any $p$ elements of $F$, at least $r$ of the $q$-tuples intersect. They showed that $HD_d(p,q)_r \leq p-q+1$ holds for all $r>{{p}\choose{q}}-{{p+1-d}\choose{q+1-d}}$; however, this is far from being tight. In this paper we present improved asymptotic upper bounds on $HD_d(p,q)_r$ which hold when only a tiny portion of the $q$-tuples intersect. In particular, we show that for $p,q$ sufficiently large, $HD_d(p,q)_r \leq p-q+1$ holds with $r = \frac{1}{p^{\frac{q}{2d}}}{{p}\choose{q}}$. Our bound misses the known lower bound for the same piercing number by a factor of less than $pq^d$. Our results use Kalai's Upper Bound Theorem for convex sets, along with the Hadwiger-Debrunner theorem and the recent improved upper bound on $HD_d(p,q)$ mentioned above.

Abstract:We continue the study of intersection bodies of polytopes, focusing on the behavior of IP under translations of P . We introduce an affine hyperplane arrangement and show that the polynomials describing the boundary of can be extended to polynomials in variables within each region of the arrangement. In dimension 2, we give a full characterization of those polygons such that their intersection body is convex. We give a partial characterization for general dimensions.

Transversals and colorings of simplicial spheres

Abstract:Motivated from the surrounding property of a point set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ introduced by Holmsen, Pach and Tverberg, we consider the transversal number and chromatic number of a simplicial sphere. As an attempt to give a lower bound for the maximum transversal ratio of simplicial $d$-spheres, we provide two infinite constructions. The first construction gives infintely many $(d+1)$-dimensional simplicial polytopes with the transversal ratio exactly $\frac{2}{d+2}$ for every $d\geq 2$. In the case of $d=2$, this meets the previously well-known upper bound $1/2$ tightly. The second gives infinitely many simplicial 3-spheres with the transversal ratio greater than $1/2$. This was unexpected from what was previously known about the surrounding property. Moreover, we show that, for $d\geq 3$, the facet hypergraph $\mathcal{F}(\mathsf{K})$ of a $d$-dimensional simplicial sphere $\mathsf{K}$ has the chromatic number $\chi(\mathcal{F}(\mathsf{K})) \in O(n^{\frac{\lceil d/2\rceil-1}{d}})$, where $n$ is the number of vertices of $\mathsf{K}$. This slightly improves the upper bound previously obtained by Heise, Panagiotou, Pikhurko, and Taraz.

Beyond chromatic threshold via the $(p,q)$-theorem, and a sharp blow-up phenomenon

Abstract:We establish a novel connection between the well-known chromatic threshold problem in extremal combinatorics and the celebrated $(p,q)$-theorem in discrete geometry. In particular, for a graph $G$ with bounded clique number and a natural density condition, we prove a $(p,q)$-theorem for an abstract convexity space associated with $G$. Our result strengthens those of Thomassen and Nikiforov on the chromatic threshold of cliques. Our $(p,q)$-theorem can also be viewed as a $\chi$-boundedness result for (what we call) ultra maximal $K_r$-free graphs. We further show that the graphs under study are blow-ups of constant size graphs, improving a result of Oberkampf and Schacht on homomorphism threshold of cliques. Our result unravels the cause underpinning such a blow-up phenomenon, differentiating the chromatic and homomorphism threshold problems for cliques. It implies that for the homomorphism threshold problem, rather than the minimum degree condition usually considered in the literature, the decisive factor is a clique density condition on co-neighborhoods of vertices. More precisely, we show that if an $n$-vertex $K_{r}$-free graph $G$ satisfies that the common neighborhood of every pair of non-adjacent vertices induces a subgraph with $K_{r-2}$-density at least $\varepsilon>0$, then $G$ must be a blow-up of some $K_r$-free graph $F$ on at most $2^{O(\frac{r}{\varepsilon}\log\frac{1}{\varepsilon})}$ vertices. Furthermore, this single exponential bound is optimal. We construct examples with no $K_r$-free homomorphic image of size smaller than $2^{\Omega_r(\frac{1}{\varepsilon})}$.

Coloring hypergraphs that are the union of nearly disjoint cliques

Abstract:We consider the maximum chromatic number of hypergraphs consisting of cliques that have pairwise small intersections. Designs of the appropriate parameters produce optimal constructions, but these are known to exist only when the number of cliques is exponential in the clique size. We construct near designs where the number of cliques is polynomial in the clique size, and show that they have large chromatic number. The case when the cliques have pairwise intersections of size at most one seems particularly challenging. Here we give lower bounds by analyzing a random greedy hypergraph process. We also consider the related question of determining the maximum number of caps in a finite projective/affine plane and obtain nontrivial upper and lower bounds.

Abstract:We consider the online version of the piercing set problem, where geometric objects arrive one by one, and the online algorithm must maintain a valid piercing set for the already arrived objects by making irrevocable decisions. It is easy to observe that any deterministic algorithm solving this problem for intervals in $\mathbb{R}$ has a competitive ratio of at least $\Omega(n)$. This paper considers the piercing set problem for similarly sized objects. We propose a deterministic online algorithm for similarly sized fat objects in $\mathbb{R}^d$. For homothetic hypercubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with side length in the range $[1,k]$, we propose a deterministic algorithm having a competitive ratio of at most~$3^d\lceil\log_2 k\rceil+2^d$. In the end, we show deterministic lower bounds of the competitive ratio for similarly sized $\alpha$-fat objects in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and homothetic hypercubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Note that piercing translated copies of a convex object is equivalent to the unit covering problem, which is well-studied in the online setup. Surprisingly, no upper bound of the competitive ratio was known for the unit covering problem when the corresponding object is anything other than a ball or a hypercube. Our result yields an upper bound of the competitive ratio for the unit covering problem when the corresponding object is any convex object in $\mathbb{R}^d$.

Abstract:The intersection numbers of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,m}$ are well-studied and are known to have rich combinatorial structure. We introduce a natural class of these intersection numbers $\omega_{G,g,m}$ indexed by finite simple graphs $G=(V,E)$. In genus zero, these numbers are closely related to several previously-studied quantities, including maximum likelihood degrees in algebraic statistics, counts of regions of certain hyperplane arrangements, and Kapranov degrees. We give two proofs of a simple closed formula $\omega_{G,g,m}=(-1)^{\left\lvert V \right\rvert}\chi_G(-(2g-2+m)),$ where $\chi_G$ is the chromatic polynomial of $G$ -- one proof via intersection theory on moduli spaces of stable curves, and the other using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We discuss several related questions and speculations, including new candidates for the chromatic polynomial of a directed graph.

Abstract:Let $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ be an infinite sequence of families of compact connected sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. An infinite sequence of compact connected sets $\left\{ B_{n} \right\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ is called heterochromatic sequence from $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ if there exists an infinite sequence $\left\{ i_{n} \right\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of natural numbers satisfying the following two properties: (a) $\{i_{n}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ is a monotonically increasing sequence, and (b) for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$, we have $B_{n} \in \mathcal{F}_{i_n}$. We show that if every heterochromatic sequence from $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ contains $d+1$ sets that can be pierced by a single hyperplane then there exists a finite collection $\mathcal{H}$ of hyperplanes from $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ that pierces all but finitely many families from $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$. As a direct consequence of our result, we get that if every countable subcollection from an infinite family $\mathcal{F}$ of compact connected sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ contains $d+1$ sets that can be pierced by a single hyperplane then $\mathcal{F}$ can be pierced by finitely many hyperplanes. To establish the optimality of our result we show that, for all $d \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists an infinite sequence $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ of families of compact connected sets satisfying the following two conditions: (1) for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$, $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ is not pierceable by finitely many hyperplanes, and (2) for any $m \in \mathbb{N}$ and every sequence $\left\{B_n\right\}_{n=m}^{\infty}$ of compact connected sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $B_i\in\mathcal{F}_i$ for all $i \geq m$, there exists a hyperplane in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that pierces at least $d+1$ sets in the sequence.

Clique covers of complete graphs and piercing multitrack intervals

Abstract:Assume that $R_1,R_2,\dots,R_t$ are disjoint parallel lines in the plane. A $t$-interval (or $t$-track interval) is a set that can be written as the union of $t$ closed intervals, each on a different line. It is known that pairwise intersecting $2$-intervals can be pierced by two points, one from each line. However, it is not true that every set of pairwise intersecting $3$-intervals can be pierced by three points, one from each line. For $k\ge 3$, Kaiser and Rabinovich asked whether $k$-wise intersecting $t$-intervals can be pierced by $t$ points, one from each line. Our main result provides an asymptotic answer: in any set $S_1,\dots,S_n$ of $k$-wise intersecting $t$-intervals, at least $\frac{k-1}{k+1}n$ can be pierced by $t$ points, one from each line. We prove this in a more general form, replacing intervals by subtrees of a tree. This leads to questions and results on covering vertices of edge-colored complete graphs by vertices of monochromatic cliques having distinct colors, where the colorings are chordal, or more generally induced $C_4$-free graphs. For instance, we show that if the edges of a complete graph $K_n$ are colored with red or blue so that both color classes are induced $C_4$-free, then at least ${4n\over 5}$ vertices can be covered by a red and a blue clique, and this is best possible. We conclude by pointing to new Ramsey-type problems emerging from these restricted colorings.

Sharp inequalities involving the Cheeger constant of planar convex sets

Abstract:We are interested in finding sharp bounds for the Cheeger constant $h$ via different geometrical quantities, namely the area $|\cdot|$, the perimeter $P$, the inradius $r$, the circumradius $R$, the minimal width $\omega$ and the diameter $d$. We provide new sharp inequalities between these quantities for planar convex bodies and enounce new conjectures based on numerical simulations. In particular, we completely solve the Blaschke-Santal\'o diagrams describing all the possible inequalities involving the triplets $(P,h,r)$, $(d,h,r)$ and $(R,h,r)$ and describe some parts of the boundaries of the diagrams of the triplets $(\omega,h,d)$, $(\omega,h,R)$, $(\omega,h,P)$, $(\omega,h,|\cdot|)$, $(R,h,d)$ and $(\omega,h,r)$.
