Abstract:This article discusses the relation between the translative kissing numbers of convex bodies K 1 , K 2 and K 1 ⊕ K 2 . As an application of the main theorem, we find that the translative kissing number of B ⊕ Q , where B is a 24-dimensional ball and Q is a two-dimensional non-parallelogram convex domain, is 1375926.

Abstract:In 1694, Gregory and Newton proposed the problem to determine the kissing number of a rigid material ball. This problem and its higher dimensional generalization have been studied by many mathematicians, including Minkowski, van der Waerden, Hadwiger, Swinnerton-Dyer, Watson, Levenshtein, Odlyzko, Sloane and Musin. In this paper, we introduce and study a further generalization of the kissing numbers for convex bodies and obtain some exact results, in particular for balls in dimensions three, four and eight.

Abstract:The kissing number and Hadwiger's covering number are two important and interesting numbers associated with a given convex body. They have been studied by many well-known mathematicians for decades. However, our knowledge about them is still very limited. The blocking number is a relatively new concept in Convex and Discrete Geometry. However, besides its own interest, it serves as a bridge between the kissing number and the covering number. This paper will review the basic problems and the main known results about these three numbers with an emphasis on their connections. In addition, it also contains some new results about Borsuk's problem in Minkowski spaces, the blocking numbers and Hadwiger's covering numbers.

In 1694, Gregory and Newton discussed the following thirteen spheres problem. Can a rigid material sphere be brought into contact with 13 other such spheres of the same size? Abstract:László Fejes Tóth and Aladár Heppes proposed the following generalization of the kissing number problem. Given a ball in $\mathbb{R}^d$, consider a family of balls touching it, and another family of balls touching the first family. Find the maximal possible number of balls in this arrangement, provided that no two balls intersect by interiors, and all balls are congruent. They showed that the answer for disks on the plane is $19$. They also conjectured that if there are three families of disks instead of two, the answer is $37$. In this paper we confirm this conjecture.

Improved kissing numbers in seventeen through twenty-one dimensions

Abstract:We prove that the kissing numbers in 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 dimensions are at least 5730, 7654, 11692, 19448, and 29768, respectively. The previous records were set by Leech in 1967, and we improve on them by 384, 256, 1024, 2048, and 2048. Unlike the previous constructions, the new configurations are not cross sections of the Leech lattice minimal vectors. Instead, they are constructed by modifying the signs in the lattice vectors to open up more space for additional spheres.

Abstract:The kissing number $\tau(d)$ is the maximum number of pairwise non-overlapping unit spheres each touching a central unit sphere in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. In this note we report on how we discovered a new, previously unknown arrangement of $40$ unit spheres in dimension $5$. Our arrangement saturates the best known lower bound on $\tau(5)$, and refutes a `belief' of Cohn--Jiao--Kumar--Torquato.

Abstract:In this article we study the simultaneous packing and covering constants of two-dimensional centrally symmetric convex domains. Besides an identity result between translative case and lattice case and a general upper bound, exact values for some special domains are determined. Similar to Mahler and Reinhardt's result about packing densities, we show that the simultaneous packing and covering constant of an octagon is larger than that of a circle.

Abstract:This paper suveys different variants of the following problem: Given a convex set $K$ and a sequence $\{C_i\}$ of convex bodies in $E^n$, is it possible to pack the sequence of bodies in $K$ or cover $K$ with the bodies? Algorithmic versions of these problems are on-line packing and on-line covering: The bodies of the sequence are given one at a time and the algorithm is to decide on the placement of the arriving body before the next body is revealed; once placed, the body cannot be moved.

Abstract:We analyze Szöllősi's recent construction of a five-dimensional kissing configuration and produce a new such configuration, the fourth to be discovered. We construct five-dimensional sphere packings from these configurations, which augment Conway and Sloane's list of conjecturally optimal packings, and we also construct a new kissing configuration in nine dimensions. None of these constructions improves on the known records, but they provide geometrically distinct constructions achieving these records.

In this article we study the following problem: Is the covering (packing) density of a Cartesian product of two convex bodies always equal to the product of their corresponding covering (packing) densities? For the covering case we get a negative answer. For the packing case we get a combinatorial version which seems to be important for its own interest.

Abstract:We study the contact structure of totally separable} packings of translates of a convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, that is, packings where any two touching bodies have a separating hyperplane that does not intersect the interior of any translate in the packing. The separable Hadwiger number $H_{\text{sep}}(K)$ of $K$ is defined to be the maximum number of translates touched by a single translate, with the maximum taken over all totally separable packings of translates of $K$. We show that for each $d\geq 8$, there exists a smooth and strictly convex $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $H_{\text{sep}}(K)>2d$, and asymptotically, $H_{\text{sep}}(K)=\Omega\bigl((3/\sqrt{8})^d\bigr)$. We show that Alon's packing of Euclidean unit balls such that each translate touches at least $2^{\sqrt{d}}$ others whenever $d$ is a power of $4$, can be adapted to give a totally separable packing of translates of the $\ell_1$-unit ball with the same touching property. We also consider the maximum number of touching pairs in a totally separable packing of $n$ translates of any planar convex body $K$. We prove that the maximum equals $\lfloor 2n-2\sqrt{n}\rfloor$ if and only if $K$ is a quasi hexagon, thus completing the determination of this value for all planar convex bodies.

Abstract:We construct a sequence of lattices $\{L_{n_i}\subset \mathbb R^{n_i}\}$ for $n_i\longrightarrow\infty$, with exponentially large kissing numbers, namely, $\log_2\tau(L_{n_i})> 0.0338\cdot n_i -o(n_i)$. We also show that the maximum lattice kissing number $ \tau^l_{n}$ in $n$ dimensions verifies $\log_2\tau^l_{n}> 0.0219\cdot n -o(n)$.

Abstract:The Dirichlet–Voronoi cell and parallelohedron are fundamental concepts in Geometry. In particular, they do play important roles in the study of ball packing and ball covering. However, to study packing and covering of general convex bodies, they are no longer so useful (see Theorem 0). By introducing Minkowski bisectors and Minkowski cells, this paper explores a new way to study the density $\theta ^*(C)$ of the thinnest lattice covering of $\mathbb {E}^n$ by a centrally symmetric convex body C. Several basic results (Theorems 2 and 4, Corollary 1) and unexpected geometric phenomena (Theorem 0, Example 1, Remark 4) about Minkowski bisectors, Minkowski cells and covering densities are discovered.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 2643-2664, December 2024. We investigate the following question: How close can two disjoint lattice polytopes contained in a fixed hypercube be? This question stems from various contexts where the minimal distance between such polytopes appears in complexity bounds of optimization algorithms. We provide nearly matching bounds on this distance and discuss its exact computation. We also give similar bounds for disjoint rational polytopes whose binary encoding length is prescribed.
