Abstract:We determine the lattice kissing numbers of tetrahedra, by which we disprove a conjecture by Grünbaum. At the same time, we present a strange phenomenon concerning kissing numbers and packing densities of tetrahedra.

Abstract:We prove that the kissing numbers in 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 dimensions are at least 5730, 7654, 11692, 19448, and 29768, respectively. The previous records were set by Leech in 1967, and we improve on them by 384, 256, 1024, 2048, and 2048. Unlike the previous constructions, the new configurations are not cross sections of the Leech lattice minimal vectors. Instead, they are constructed by modifying the signs in the lattice vectors to open up more space for additional spheres.

Abstract:The kissing number and Hadwiger's covering number are two important and interesting numbers associated with a given convex body. They have been studied by many well-known mathematicians for decades. However, our knowledge about them is still very limited. The blocking number is a relatively new concept in Convex and Discrete Geometry. However, besides its own interest, it serves as a bridge between the kissing number and the covering number. This paper will review the basic problems and the main known results about these three numbers with an emphasis on their connections. In addition, it also contains some new results about Borsuk's problem in Minkowski spaces, the blocking numbers and Hadwiger's covering numbers.

Abstract:The kissing number $\tau(d)$ is the maximum number of pairwise non-overlapping unit spheres each touching a central unit sphere in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. In this note we report on how we discovered a new, previously unknown arrangement of $40$ unit spheres in dimension $5$. Our arrangement saturates the best known lower bound on $\tau(5)$, and refutes a `belief' of Cohn--Jiao--Kumar--Torquato.

Abstract:In 1694, Gregory and Newton proposed the problem to determine the kissing number of a rigid material ball. This problem and its higher dimensional generalization have been studied by many mathematicians, including Minkowski, van der Waerden, Hadwiger, Swinnerton-Dyer, Watson, Levenshtein, Odlyzko, Sloane and Musin. In this paper, we introduce and study a further generalization of the kissing numbers for convex bodies and obtain some exact results, in particular for balls in dimensions three, four and eight.

Abstract:This note corrects the paper \cite{ex}, where lattice sequences having exponentially large kissing numbers were constructed. However it was noted in \cite{dif} that the arguments in that paper are not sufficient. Here we correct the construction which leads to similar results, albeit with much smaller constants.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 2643-2664, December 2024. We investigate the following question: How close can two disjoint lattice polytopes contained in a fixed hypercube be? This question stems from various contexts where the minimal distance between such polytopes appears in complexity bounds of optimization algorithms. We provide nearly matching bounds on this distance and discuss its exact computation. We also give similar bounds for disjoint rational polytopes whose binary encoding length is prescribed.

Abstract:Let the kissing number $K(d)$ be the maximum number of non-overlapping unit balls in $\mathbb R^d$ that can touch a given unit ball. Determining or estimating the number $K(d)$ has a long history, with the value of $K(3)$ being the subject of a famous discussion between Gregory and Newton in 1694. We prove that, as the dimension $d$ goes to infinity, $$ K(d)\ge (1+o(1)){\frac{\sqrt{3\pi}}{4\sqrt2}}\,\log\frac{3}{2}\cdot d^{3/2}\cdot \Big(\frac{2}{\sqrt{3}}\Big)^{d}, $$ thus improving the previously best known bound of Jenssen, Joos and Perkins by a factor of $\log(3/2)/\log(9/8)+o(1)=3.442...$. Our proof is based on the novel approach from Jenssen, Joos and Perkins that uses the hard core sphere model of an appropriate fugacity. Similar constant-factor improvements in lower bounds are also obtained for general spherical codes, as well as for the expected density of random sphere packings in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$.

Abstract:We analyze Szöllősi's recent construction of a five-dimensional kissing configuration and produce a new such configuration, the fourth to be discovered. We construct five-dimensional sphere packings from these configurations, which augment Conway and Sloane's list of conjecturally optimal packings, and we also construct a new kissing configuration in nine dimensions. None of these constructions improves on the known records, but they provide geometrically distinct constructions achieving these records.

Abstract:László Fejes Tóth and Aladár Heppes proposed the following generalization of the kissing number problem. Given a ball in $\mathbb{R}^d$, consider a family of balls touching it, and another family of balls touching the first family. Find the maximal possible number of balls in this arrangement, provided that no two balls intersect by interiors, and all balls are congruent. They showed that the answer for disks on the plane is $19$. They also conjectured that if there are three families of disks instead of two, the answer is $37$. In this paper we confirm this conjecture.

Abstract:This paper presents new lower bounds for the lattice covering densities of simplices by studying the Degree-Diameter Problem for abelian Cayley digraphs. In particular, it proves that the density of any lattice covering of a tetrahedron is at least $25/18$ and the density of any lattice covering of a four-dimensional simplex is at least $343/264$.

Abstract:T he regular tetrahedron is the simplest Platonic solid. Nevertheless, in studying its packing properties, several renowned scholars have made mistakes, and many questions about it remain unsolved. Currently no one knows the density of its densest packings, the density of its densest translative packings, or the exact value of its congruent kissing number. In this paper we recount historical developments on packing regular tetrahedra, report new results on its translative packing density and congruent kissing number, and formulate several unsolved problems.

Abstract:We construct a sequence of lattices $\{L_{n_i}\subset \mathbb R^{n_i}\}$ for $n_i\longrightarrow\infty$, with exponentially large kissing numbers, namely, $\log_2\tau(L_{n_i})> 0.0338\cdot n_i -o(n_i)$. We also show that the maximum lattice kissing number $ \tau^l_{n}$ in $n$ dimensions verifies $\log_2\tau^l_{n}> 0.0219\cdot n -o(n)$.

Abstract:We prove that the kissing number in 48 dimensions among antipodal spherical codes with certain forbidden inner products is 52\,416\,000. Constructions of attaining codes as kissing configurations of minimum vectors in even unimodular extremal lattices are well known since the 1970's. We also prove that corresponding spherical 11-designs with the same cardinality are minimal. We use appropriate modifications of the linear programming bounds for spherical codes and designs introduced by Delsarte, Goethals and Seidel in 1977.

Abstract:Proctor proved a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side-lengths $a,b,c,a,b,c$ after removing a "maximal staircase." Ciucu then presented a weighted version of Proctor's result. Here we present weighted and unweighted formulas for a similar region which has an additional unit triangle removed. We use Kuo's graphical condensation method to prove the results. By applying the factorization theorem of Ciucu, we obtain a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with three holes on consecutive edges.
