Abstract:The kissing number and Hadwiger's covering number are two important and interesting numbers associated with a given convex body. They have been studied by many well-known mathematicians for decades. However, our knowledge about them is still very limited. The blocking number is a relatively new concept in Convex and Discrete Geometry. However, besides its own interest, it serves as a bridge between the kissing number and the covering number. This paper will review the basic problems and the main known results about these three numbers with an emphasis on their connections. In addition, it also contains some new results about Borsuk's problem in Minkowski spaces, the blocking numbers and Hadwiger's covering numbers.

Abstract:This article shows an inequality concerning blocking numbers and Hadwiger's covering numbers and presents a strange phenomenon concerning kissing numbers and blocking numbers. As a simple corollary, we can improve the known upper bounds for Hadwiger's covering numbers ford-dimensional centrally symmetric convex bodies to 3d-1.

Abstract:Covering a convex body by its homothets is a classical notion in discrete geometry that has resulted in a number of interesting and long-standing problems. Swanepoel introduced the covering parameter of a convex body as a means of quantifying its covering properties. In this paper, we introduce two relatives of the covering parameter called covering index and weak covering index, which upper bound well-studied quantities like the illumination number, the illumination parameter and the covering parameter of a convex body. Intuitively, the two indices measure how well a convex body can be covered by a relatively small number of homothets having the same relatively small homothety ratio. We show that the covering index is a lower semicontinuous functional on the Banach-Mazur space of convex bodies. We further show that the affine d-cubes minimize covering index in any dimension d, while circular disks maximize it in the plane. Furthermore, the covering index satisfies a nice compatibility with the operations of direct vector sum and vector sum. In fact, we obtain an exact formula for the covering index of a direct vector sum of convex bodies that works in infinitely many instances. This together with a minimization property can be used to determine the covering index of infinitely many convex bodies. As the name suggests, the weak covering index loses some of the important properties of the covering index. Finally, we obtain upper bounds on the covering and weak covering index.

Abstract:In geometry, there are several challenging problems studying numbers associated to convex bodies. For example, the packing density problem, the kissing number problem, the covering density problem, the packing-covering constant problem, Hadwiger's covering conjecture and Borsuk's partition conjecture. They are fundamental and fascinating problems about the same objects. However, up to now, both the methodology and the technique applied to them are essentially different. Therefore, a common foundation for them has been much expected. By treating problems of these types as functionals defined on the spaces of n-dimensional convex bodies, this paper tries to create such a foundation. In particular, supderivatives for these functionals will be studied.

Abstract:In 1694, Gregory and Newton proposed the problem to determine the kissing number of a rigid material ball. This problem and its higher dimensional generalization have been studied by many mathematicians, including Minkowski, van der Waerden, Hadwiger, Swinnerton-Dyer, Watson, Levenshtein, Odlyzko, Sloane and Musin. In this paper, we introduce and study a further generalization of the kissing numbers for convex bodies and obtain some exact results, in particular for balls in dimensions three, four and eight.

In this article we study the following problem: Is the covering (packing) density of a Cartesian product of two convex bodies always equal to the product of their corresponding covering (packing) densities? For the covering case we get a negative answer. For the packing case we get a combinatorial version which seems to be important for its own interest.

Abstract:The Dirichlet–Voronoi cell and parallelohedron are fundamental concepts in Geometry. In particular, they do play important roles in the study of ball packing and ball covering. However, to study packing and covering of general convex bodies, they are no longer so useful (see Theorem 0). By introducing Minkowski bisectors and Minkowski cells, this paper explores a new way to study the density $\theta ^*(C)$ of the thinnest lattice covering of $\mathbb {E}^n$ by a centrally symmetric convex body C. Several basic results (Theorems 2 and 4, Corollary 1) and unexpected geometric phenomena (Theorem 0, Example 1, Remark 4) about Minkowski bisectors, Minkowski cells and covering densities are discovered.

Abstract:In 1957, Hadwiger made a conjecture that every n -dimensional convex body can be covered by 2 n translates of its interior. Up to now, this conjecture is still open for all n ⩾ 3. In 1933, Borsuk made a conjecture that every n -dimensional bounded set can be divided into n + 1 subsets of smaller diameters. Up to now, this conjecture is open for 4 ⩽ n ⩽ 297. In this article we encode the two conjectures into continuous functions defined on the spaces of convex bodies, propose a four-step program to attack them, and obtain some partial results.

Abstract:In this paper, we shall discuss topics in geometry of numbers in the positive characteristic setting, such as covering radii. We find a closed form for covering radii with respect to convex bodies, which will lead to a proof of the positive characteristic analogue of Woods' conjecture in this setting. Then, we will prove a positive characteristic analogue of Minkowski's conjecture about the multiplicative covering radius. To do this, we shall prove a positive characteristic analogue of Solan's result that every diagonal orbit intersects the set of well rounded lattices. This implies that the Gruber-Mordell spectrum in positive characteristic is trivial in every dimension.

Abstract:Given an affine variety X and a finite dimensional vector space of regular functions L on X, we associate a convex body to (X, L) such that its volume is responsible for the number of solutions of a generic system of functions from L. This is a far reaching generalization of usual theory of Newton polytopes (which is concerned with toric varieties). As applications we give new, simple and transparent proofs of some well-known theorems in both algebraic geometry (e.g. Hodge Index Theorem) and convex geometry (e.g. Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality). Our main tools are classical Hilbert theory on degree of subvarieties of a projective space (in algebraic geometry) and Brunn-Minkowski inequality (in convex geometric).

Abstract:Based on the work of Okounkov, Kaveh-Khovanskii and Lazarsfeld-Mustata independently associated a convex body, called the Okounkov body, to a big divisor on a normal projective variety with respect to an admissible flag. Although the Okounkov bodies carry rich positivity data of big divisors, they only provide information near a single point. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a convex body of a big divisor that is effective in handling the positivity theory associated with multi-point settings. These convex bodies open the door to approach the local positivity theory at multiple points from a convex-geometric perspective. We study their properties and shapes, and describe local positivity data via them. Finally, we observe the irrationality of Seshadri constants with the help of a relation between Nakayama constants and Seshadri constants.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an m -fold illumination number of a convex body K in Euclidean space , which is the smallest number of directions required to m -fold illuminate K , i.e., each point on the boundary of K is illuminated by at least m directions. We get a lower bound of for any d -dimensional convex body K , and get an upper bound of for any d -dimensional convex body K with smooth boundary. We also prove that , for a 2-dimensional smooth convex body K . Furthermore, we obtain some results related to the m -fold illumination numbers of convex polygons and cap bodies of a d -dimensional unit ball in small dimensions. In particular, we show that , for a regular convex n -sided polygon P .

These polytopes are obtained as the convex hull of the Minkowski sum of a finite subset of and . Our investigation includes the verification of Hadwiger's covering conjecture for , as well as the estimation of the covering functional for convex polytopes in . Furthermore, we demonstrate that when an integer M is sufficiently large, the elements belonging to that are contained in serve as an -net for the space of convex bodies in , equipped with the Banach–Mazur metric.

Abstract:A positive integer n is called a covering number if there are some distinct divisors n_1,...,n_k of n greater than one and some integers a_1,...,a_k such that Z is the union of the residue classes a_1(mod n_1),...,a_k(mod n_k). A covering number is said to be primitive if none of its proper divisors is a covering number. In this paper we give some sufficient conditions for n to be a (primitive) covering number; in particular, we show that for any r=2,3,... there are infinitely many primitive covering numbers having exactly r distinct prime divisors. In 1980 P. Erdos asked whether there are infinitely many positive integers n such that among the subsets of D_n={d>1: d|n} only D_n can be the set of all the moduli in a cover of Z with distinct moduli; we answer this question affirmatively. We also conjecture that any primitive covering number must have a prime factorization p_1^{alpha_1}...p_r^{alpha_r} (with p_1,...,p_r in a suitable order) which satisfies $\prod_{0<t<s}(alpha_t+1)\ge p_s-1$ for each s=1,...,r, with strict inequality when s=r.
