Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. Abstract:For Bezier curves, subdivision algorithms create control polygons as piecewise linear (PL) approximations that converge in terms of Hausdorff distance. We prove that the exterior angles of control polygons under subdivision converge to 0 at the rate of $O(\sqrt{\frac{1}{2^i}})$, where $i$ is the number of subdivisions. This angular convergence is useful for determining topological features. We use it to show homeomorphism between a Bezier curve and its control polygon under subdivision. The constructive geometric proofs yield closed-form formulas to compute sufficient numbers of subdivision iterations to obtain small exterior angles and achieve homeomorphism.

Abstract:Let $K\subseteq{\mathbb R}^n$ be a convex semialgebraic set. The semidefinite extension degree ${\mathrm{sxdeg}}(K)$ of $K$ is the smallest number $d$ such that $K$ is a linear image of an intersection of finitely many spectrahedra, each of which is described by a linear matrix inequality of size $\le d$. This invariant can be considered to be a measure for the intrinsic complexity of semidefinite optimization over the set $K$. For an arbitrary semialgebraic set $S\subseteq{\mathbb R}^n$ of dimension one, our main result states that the closed convex hull $K$ of $S$ satisfies ${\mathrm{sxdeg}}(K)\le1+\lfloor\frac n2\rfloor$. This bound is best possible in several ways. Before, the result was known for $n=2$, and also for general $n$ in the case where $S$ is a monomial curve.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce and develop a theory of convex drawings of the complete graph $K_n$ in the sphere. A drawing $D$ of $K_n$ is convex if, for every 3-cycle $T$ of $K_n$, there is a closed disc $\Delta_T$ bounded by $D[T]$ such that, for any two vertices $u,v$ with $D[u]$ and $D[v]$ both in $\Delta_T$, the entire edge $D[uv]$ is also contained in $\Delta_T$. As one application of this perspective, we consider drawings containing a non-convex $K_5$ that has restrictions on its extensions to drawings of $K_7$. For each such drawing, we use convexity to produce a new drawing with fewer crossings. This is the first example of local considerations providing sufficient conditions for suboptimality. In particular, we do not compare the number of crossings {with the number of crossings in} any known drawings. This result sheds light on Aichholzer's computer proof (personal communication) showing that, for $n\le 12$, every optimal drawing of $K_n$ is convex. Convex drawings are characterized by excluding two of the five drawings of $K_5$. Two refinements of convex drawings are h-convex and f-convex drawings. The latter have been shown by Aichholzer et al (Deciding monotonicity of good drawings of the complete graph, Proc.~XVI Spanish Meeting on Computational Geometry (EGC 2015), 2015) and, independently, the authors of the current article (Levi's Lemma, pseudolinear drawings of $K_n$, and empty triangles, \rbr{J. Graph Theory DOI: <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1002/jgt.22167" href="https://doi.org/10.1002/jgt.22167" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1002/jgt.22167</a>)}, to be equivalent to pseudolinear drawings. Also, h-convex drawings are equivalent to pseudospherical drawings as demonstrated recently by Arroyo et al (Extending drawings of complete graphs into arrangements of pseudocircles, submitted).

Abstract:Woess [30] introduced a curvature notion on the set of edges of a planar graph, called Ψ-curvature in our paper, which is stable under the planar duality. We study geometric and combinatorial properties for the class of infinite planar graphs with non-negative Ψ-curvature. By using the discharging method, we prove that for such an infinite graph the number of vertices (resp. faces) of degree k, except k=3,4 or 6, is finite. As a main result, we prove that for an infinite planar graph with non-negative Ψ-curvature the sum of the number of vertices of degree at least 8 and the number of faces of degree at least 8 is at most one.

Abstract:For a finite point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, denote by $\text{diam}(P)$ the ratio of the largest to the smallest distances between pairs of points in $P$. Let $c_{d, \alpha}(n)$ be the largest integer $c$ such that any $n$-point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ in general position, satisfying $\text{diam}(P) < \alpha\sqrt[d]{n}$, contains an $c$-point convex independent subset. We determine the asymptotics of $c_{d, \alpha}(n)$ as $n \to \infty$ by showing the existence of positive constants $\beta = \beta(d, \alpha)$ and $\gamma = \gamma(d)$ such that $\beta n^{\frac{d-1}{d+1}} \le c_{d, \alpha}(n) \le \gamma n^{\frac{d-1}{d+1}}$ for $\alpha\geq 2$.

Counting curves with tangencies

Abstract:Interpreting tangency as a limit of two transverse intersections, we obtain a concrete formula to enumerate smooth degree d plane curves tangent to a given line at multiple points with arbitrary order of tangency. One nodal curves with multiple tangencies of any order are enumerated. Also, one cuspidal curves, that are tangent to first order to a given line at multiple points, are enumerated. We also present a new way to enumerate curves with one node; it is interpreted as a degeneration of a curve tangent to a given line. That method is extended to enumerate curves with two nodes, and also curves with one tacnode are enumerated. In the final part of the paper, it is shown how this idea can be applied in the setting of stable maps and perform a concrete computation to enumerate rational curves with first order tangency. A large number of low degree cases have been worked out explicitly.

Topological Drawings meet Classical Theorems from Convex Geometry

Abstract:In this article we discuss classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of topological drawings and beyond. In a simple topological drawing of the complete graph $K_n$, any two edges share at most one point: either a common vertex or a point where they cross. Triangles of simple topological drawings can be viewed as convex sets. This gives a link to convex geometry. As our main result, we present a generalization of Kirchberger's Theorem that is of purely combinatorial nature. It turned out that this classical theorem also applies to "generalized signotopes" - a combinatorial generalization of simple topological drawings, which we introduce and investigate in the course of this article. As indicated by the name they are a generalization of signotopes, a structure studied in the context of encodings for arrangements of pseudolines. We also present a family of simple topological drawings with arbitrarily large Helly number, and a new proof of a topological generalization of Carathéodory's Theorem in the plane and discuss further classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of simple topological drawings.

On a Dowker-type problem for convex disks with almost constant curvature

Abstract:A classical result of Dowker (Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 50: 120-122, 1944) states that for any plane convex body $K$, the areas of the maximum (resp. minimum) area convex $n$-gons inscribed (resp. circumscribed) in $K$ is a concave (resp. convex) sequence. It is known that this theorem remains true if we replace area by perimeter, or convex $n$-gons by disk-$n$-gons, obtained as the intersection of $n$ closed Euclidean unit disks. It has been proved recently that if $C$ is the unit disk of a normed plane, then the same properties hold for the area of $C$-$n$-gons circumscribed about a $C$-convex disk $K$ and for the perimeters of $C$-$n$-gons inscribed or circumscribed about a $C$-convex disk $K$, but for a typical origin-symmetric convex disk $C$ with respect to Hausdorff distance, there is a $C$-convex disk $K$ such that the sequence of the areas of the maximum area $C$-$n$-gons inscribed in $K$ is not concave. The aim of this paper is to investigate this question if we replace the topology induced by Hausdorff distance with a topology induced by the surface area measure of the boundary of $C$.

Abstract:A rigidity theorem for oriented complete submanifolds with parallel mean curvature in a complete and simply connected Riemannian (n + p)-dimensional manifold N n+p with negative sectional curvature is proved. For given positive integers n(≥ 2), p and for a constant H satisfying H > 1 there exists a negative number τ(n, p, H) ∈ (−1,0) with the property that if the sectional curvature of N is pinched in [−1, τ(n, p, H)], and if the squared length of the second fundamental form is in a certain interval, then N n+p is isometric to the hyperbolic space H n+p(−1). As a consequence, this submanifold M is congruent to S n (1/$\sqrt {H^2 - 1} $) or the Veronese surface in S 4(1/$\sqrt {H^2 - 1} $).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple topological graph and let $\Gamma$ be a polyline drawing of $G$. We say that $\Gamma$ \emph{partially preserves the topology} of $G$ if it has the same external boundary, the same rotation system, and the same set of crossings as $G$. Drawing $\Gamma$ fully preserves the topology of $G$ if the planarization of $G$ and the planarization of $\Gamma$ have the same planar embedding. We show that if the set of crossing-free edges of $G$ forms a connected spanning subgraph, then $G$ admits a polyline drawing that partially preserves its topology and that has curve complexity at most three (i.e., at most three bends per edge). If, however, the set of crossing-free edges of $G$ is not a connected spanning subgraph, the curve complexity may be $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$. Concerning drawings that fully preserve the topology, we show that if $G$ has skewness $k$, it admits one such drawing with curve complexity at most $2k$; for skewness-1 graphs, the curve complexity can be reduced to one, which is a tight bound. We also consider optimal $2$-plane graphs and discuss trade-offs between curve complexity and crossing angle resolution of drawings that fully preserve the topology.

Abstract:One of the earliest results in enumerative combinatorial geometry is the following theorem of de Bruijn and Erdős: Every set of points $E$ in a projective plane determines at least $|E|$ lines, unless all the points are contained in a line. Motzkin and others extended the result to higher dimensions, who showed that every set of points $E$ in a projective space determines at least $|E|$ hyperplanes, unless all the points are contained in a hyperplane. Let $E$ be a spanning subset of a $d$-dimensional vector space. We show that, in the partially ordered set of subspaces spanned by subsets of $E$, there are at least as many $(d-k)$-dimensional subspaces as there are $k$-dimensional subspaces, for every $k$ at most $d/2$. This confirms the "top-heavy" conjecture of Dowling and Wilson for all matroids realizable over some field. The proof relies on the decomposition theorem package for $\ell$-adic intersection complexes.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove there exist at least [n+1/2]+1 geometrically distinct closed characteristics on every compact convex hypersurface Σ in 𝐑^2n , where n≥ 2 . In particular, this gives a new proof in the case n=3 to a long standing conjecture in Hamiltonian analysis. Moreover, there exist at least [n/2]+1 geometrically distinct non-hyperbolic closed characteristics on Σ provided the number of geometrically distinct closed characteristics on Σ is finite.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to understanding curves $X$ over a number field $k$ that possess infinitely many solutions in extensions of $k$ of degree at most $d$; such solutions are the titular low degree points. For $d=2,3$ it is known (by the work of Harris-Silverman and Abramovich-Harris) that such curves, after a base change to $\overline{k},$ admit a map of degree at most $d$ onto $\mathbb{P}^1$ or an elliptic curve. For $d \geqslant 4$ the analogous statement was shown to be false by Debarre and Fahlaoui. We prove that once the genus of $X$ is high enough, the low degree points still have geometric origin: they can be obtained as pullbacks of low degree points from a lower genus curve. We introduce a discrete-geometric invariant attached to such curves: a family of subspace configurations, with many interesting properties. This structure gives a natural alternative construction of curves with many low degree points, that were first discovered by Debarre and Fahlaoui. As an application of our methods, we obtain a classification of such curves over $k$ for $d=2,3$, and a classification over $\overline{k}$ for $d=4,5$.

Abstract:For immersed curves in Euclidean space of any codimension we establish a Li--Yau type inequality that gives a lower bound of the (normalized) bending energy in terms of multiplicity. The obtained inequality is optimal for any codimension and any multiplicity except for the case of planar closed curves with odd multiplicity; in this remaining case we discover a hidden algebraic obstruction and indeed prove an exhaustive non-optimality result. The proof is mainly variational and involves Langer--Singer's classification of elasticae and André's algebraic-independence theorem for certain hypergeometric functions. We also discuss applications to elastic flows, networks, and knots.

A Topological Approach to Simple Descriptions of Convex Hulls of Sets Defined by Three Quadrics

Abstract:We study the convex hull of a set $S\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ defined by three quadratic inequalities. A simple way of generating inequalities valid on $S$ is to take nonnegative linear combinations of the defining inequalities of $S$. We call such inequalities aggregations. We introduce a new technique relating aggregations to properties of the spectral curve, i.e. the curve defined by the vanishing of the determinant polynomial, and utilizing known spectral sequences (Agrachev and Lerario, 2012). We find new families beyond those identified in (Dey, Muñoz, and Serrano, 2022; Blekherman, Dey, and Sun, 2024), where the convex hull is defined by aggregations. We also prove a characterization of the emptiness of the projective variety defined by $3$ homogeneous quadratics in terms of the spectral curve generalizing results of (Agrachev, 1988).
