Abstract:We show that in Euclidean 3-space any closed curve $\gamma$ which contains the unit sphere within its convex hull has length $L\geq4\pi$, and characterize the case of equality. This result generalizes the authors' recent solution to a conjecture of Zalgaller. Furthermore, for the analogous problem in $n$ dimensions, we include the estimate $L\geq Cn\sqrt{n}$ by Nazarov, which is sharp up to the constant $C$.

Abstract:We show that the shortest closed geodesic on a 2-sphere with non-negative curvature has length bounded above by three times the diameter. We prove a new isoperimetric inequality for 2-spheres with pinched curvature; this allows us to improve our bound on the length of the shortest closed geodesic in the pinched curvature setting.

Abstract:We study the tangential case in 2-dimensional almost-Riemannian geometry. We analyse the connection with the Martinet case in sub-Riemannian geometry. We compute estimations of the exponential map which allow us to describe the conjugate locus and the cut locus at a tangency point. We prove that this last one generically accumulates at the tangency point as an asymmetric cusp whose branches are separated by the singular set.

Abstract:On a convex polyhedron P, the cut locus C(x) with respect to a point x is a tree of geodesic segments (shortest paths) on P that includes every vertex. We say that P has a skeletal cut locus if there is some x in P such that C(x) is a subset of Sk(P), where Sk(P) is the 1-skeleton of P . At a first glance, there seems to be very little relation between the cut locus and the 1-skeleton, as the first one is an intrinsic geometry notion, and the second one specifies the combinatorics of P. In this paper we study skeletal cut loci, obtaining four main results. First, given any combinatorial tree T without degree-2 nodes, there exists a convex polyhedron P and a point x in P with a cut locus that lies in Sk(P), and whose combinatorics match T. Second, any (non-degenerate) polyhedron P has at most a finite number of points x for which C(x) is a subset of Sk(P). Third, we show that almost all polyhedra have no skeletal cut locus. Fourth, we provide a combinatorial restriction to the existence of skeletal cut loci. Because the source unfolding of P with respect to x is always a non-overlapping net for P, and because the boundary of the source unfolding is the (unfolded) cut locus, source unfoldings of polyhedra with skeletal cut loci are edge-unfoldings, and moreover "blooming," avoiding self-intersection during an unfolding process.

Abstract:In this article we prove that for a closed, not necessarily compact, submanifold $N$ of a possibly non-complete Finsler manifold $(M, F)$, the cut time map is always positive. As a consequence, we prove the existence of a tubular neighborhood of such a submanifold. When $N$ is compact, it then follows that there exists an $\epsilon > 0$ such that the distance between $N$ and its cut locus $\mathrm{Cu}(N)$ is at least $\epsilon$. This was originally proved by B. Alves and M. A. Javaloyes (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 2019). We have given an alternative, rather geometric proof of the same, which is novel even in the Riemannian setup. We also obtain easier proofs of some results from N. Innami et al. (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 2019), under weaker hypothesis.

Abstract:In this paper we prove new upper bounds for the length of a shortest closed geodesic, denoted $l(M)$, on a complete, non-compact Riemannian surface $M$ of finite area $A$. We will show that $l(M) \leq 4\sqrt{2A}$ on a manifold with one end, thus improving the prior estimate of C. B. Croke, who first established that $l(M) \leq 31 \sqrt{A}$. Additionally, for a surface with at least two ends we show that $l(M) \leq 2\sqrt{2A}$, improving the prior estimate of Croke that $l(M) \leq (12+3\sqrt{2})\sqrt{A}$.

Abstract:We prove that the extremal length systole of the cube punctured at its vertices is realized by the 12 curves surrounding its edges and give a characterization of the corresponding quadratic differentials, allowing us to estimate its value to high precision. The proof uses a mixture of exact calculations done using branched covers and elliptic integrals, together with estimates obtained using either the geometry of geodesic trajectories on the cube or explicit conformal maps.

Abstract:We show that every closed nonpositively curved surface satisfies Loewner's systolic inequality. The proof relies on a combination of the Gauss-Bonnet formula with an averaging argument using the invariance of the Liouville measure under the geodesic flow. This enables us to find a disk with large total curvature around its center yielding a large area.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the cut locus of closed (not necessarily compact) submanifolds in a forward complete Finsler manifold. We explore the deformation and characterization of the cut locus, extending the results of Basu and the second author (\emph{Algebraic and Geometric Topology}, 2023). Given a submanifold $N$, we consider an $N$-geodesic loop as an $N$-geodesic starting and ending in $N$, possibly at different points. This class of geodesics were studied by Omori (\emph{Journal of Differential Geometry}, 1968). We obtain a generalization of Klingenberg's lemma for closed geodesics (\emph{Annals of Mathematics}, 1959) for $N$-geodesic loops in the reversible Finsler setting.

Abstract:Given two Riemann surfaces with boundary and a homotopy class of topological embeddings between them, there is a conformal embedding in the homotopy class if and only if the extremal length of every simple multi-curve is decreased under the embedding. Furthermore, the homotopy class has a conformal embedding that misses an open disk if and only if extremal lengths are decreased by a definite ratio. This ratio remains bounded away from one under covers.

Abstract:A graph is diameter two edge-critical if its diameter is two and the deletion of any edge increases the diameter. Murty and Simon conjectured that the number of edges in a diameter two edge-critical graph on $n$ vertices is at most $\lfloor \frac{n^{2}}{4} \rfloor$ and the extremal graph is the complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor, \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil}$. In the series papers [8-10], the Murty-Simon Conjecture stated by Haynes et al is not the original conjecture, indeed, it is only for the diameter two edge-critical graphs of even order. Haynes et al proved the conjecture for the graphs whose complements have diameter three but only with even vertices. In this paper, we prove the Murty-Simon Conjecture for the graphs whose complements have diameter three, not only with even vertices but also odd ones.

Abstract:The equidistant set of two nonempty subsets $K$ and $L$ in the Euclidean plane is a set all of whose points have the same distance from $K$ and $L$. Since the classical conics can be also given in this way, equidistant sets can be considered as a kind of their generalizations: $K$ and $L$ are called the focal sets. In their paper \cite{PS} the authors posed the problem of the characterization of closed subsets in the Euclidean plane that can be realized as the equidistant set of two connected disjoint closed sets. We prove that any convex closed planar curve can be given as an equidistant set, i.e. the set of equidistant curves contains the entire class of convex closed planar curves. In this sense the equidistancy is a generalization of the convexity.

Abstract:We confirm two conjectures of Lassak on the area of reduced spherical polygons. The area of every reduced spherical non-regular $n$-gon is less than that of the regular spherical $n$-gon of the same thickness.
