Abstract:In this paper rooted loopless (near) 4-regular maps on surfaces such as the sphere and the projective plane are counted and exact formulae with up to three or four parameters for such maps are given. Several classical results on regular maps and one-faced maps are deduced.

Abstract:In this paper the number of rooted (near-) 4-regular maps on the projective plane are investigated with respect to the root-valency, the number of edges, the number of inner faces, the number of nonroot-vertex-loops, the number of nonroot-vertex-blocks. As special cases, formulae for several types of rooted 4-regular maps such as 2-connected 4-regular projective planar maps, rooted 2-connected (connected) 4-regular projective planar maps without loops are also presented. Several known results on the number of 4-regular maps on the projective plane are also concluded. Finally, by use of Darboux's method, very nice asymptotic formulae for the numbers of those types of maps are given.

Also the number of rooted near-4-regular maps with exactly k nonroot-vertex loops on this surface is provided. Abstract:In this paper rooted (near-) 4-regular maps on the plane are counted with respect to the root-valency, the number of edges, the number of inner faces, the number of non-root vertex loops, the number of non-root vertex blocks, and the number of multi-edges. As special cases, formulae of several types of rooted 4-regular maps such as 2-connected 4-regular planar maps, rooted 2-connected (connected) 4-regular planar maps without loops are also presented. Several known results on 4-regular maps and trees of Tutte are also concluded. Finally, asymptotic formulae for the numbers of those types of maps are given.

Abstract:Let $${{{\mathcal {U}}}}_n$$ and $${\overline{{{\mathcal {U}}}}}_n$$ ( $${{{\mathcal {A}}}}_n$$ and $${\overline{{{\mathcal {A}}}}}_n$$ ) denote the sets of all rooted near-4-regular maps with n inner faces (n edges) on the sphere and the projective plane, respectively. Let $$p_m$$ and $$\overline{p_m}$$ be, respectively, the limit probability (as $$n\rightarrow \infty$$ ) of the event that the rooted vertex of a map chosen in $${{{\mathcal {U}}}}_n$$ and $${\overline{{{\mathcal {U}}}}}_n$$ ( $${{{\mathcal {A}}}}_n$$ and $${\overline{{{\mathcal {A}}}}}_n$$ ) at random is of valency 2m. It is shown that both $$p_m$$ and $$\overline{p_m}$$ obey the asymptotic pattern characterized by the factor $$m^{\frac{1}{2}}$$ : $$Cm^{\frac{1}{2}} {\left( \frac{2}{3}\right) }^m$$ as $$m\rightarrow \infty$$ , where C is a constant depending on the type of maps, meanwhile each of $$q_m$$ and $$\overline{q_m}$$ will not satisfy the root-vertex valency distribution pattern posed in Liskovets (J Combin Theory Ser B 75, 116–133, 1999) (i.e., $$q_m=\overline{q_m}=0$$ for every natural number m). In particular, those maps can not satisfy several other classical patterns for n-edged maps.

Abstract:Let Un and Un (An and An) be, respectively, the sets of rooted near-4-regular maps with n inner faces (n edges) on the plane and the projective plane. Let pm and pm be, respectively, the limit probabilities (as n→∞) of the eveices that the root vertex of a map chosen in Un and Un (An and An) at random are of valency 2m. It is shown that both pm and pm obey the asymptotic pattern characterized by the factor m1/2: Cm1/2(2/3)m as m→∞, where C is a constant depending on the type of maps, meanwhile, each of qm and qm will not satisfy the root vertex valency distribution pattern posed by Liskovets (i.e., qm = qm = 0 for every natural number m). In particular, those maps can not satisfy several other classical patterns for n-edged maps.

Abstract:It is well known that any explicit generating function with up to two or three parameters for non-planar maps can not be determined with easy because of difficulties in handling the essential circuits (or “noncontractible cycles” as some scholars called). In this paper the authors count rooted non-separatable near-triangulations on the projective plane by the root-face valency, the size, and the number of inner faces and a parametric expression, by which an explicit generating function with positive coefficients can be easily deduced, is completely determined as well.

Abstract:This paper provides quartic functional equations satisfied by the enumerating functions of rooted planar near-quadrangulations with the size, the valency of the root-face and the number of non-rooted vertices. Rooted two edge-connected planar near-quadrangulations are also counted. Furthermore, explicit formulae for such two types of maps with above parameters are derived respectively after employing Lagrangian inversion. For two particular cases, the numbers of rooted planar trees and outerplanar quadrangulations are deduced directly.
