Abstract:It is well-known that finding explicit expressions fo r any kind of nonplanar maps is very difficult. In this paper we count the numbe r of rooted maps with only one face on the projective plane and find an exacet e xpression with up to two parameters for such maps.

Abstract:The enumerative functional equation of maps by the number of inner faces, the valency of root face and the number of non-rooted vertices on the projective plane is studied. An explicit expression for the generating function by the number of inner faces and the number of non-rooted vertices is obtained. From this result, the enumeration of rooted maps by the number of edges discussed in [1] is obtained as a corollary.

Abstract:It is well known that any explicit generating function with up to two or three parameters for non-planar maps can not be determined with easy because of difficulties in handling the essential circuits (or “noncontractible cycles” as some scholars called). In this paper the authors count rooted non-separatable near-triangulations on the projective plane by the root-face valency, the size, and the number of inner faces and a parametric expression, by which an explicit generating function with positive coefficients can be easily deduced, is completely determined as well.

Abstract:In this paper the number of rooted (near-) 4-regular maps on the projective plane are investigated with respect to the root-valency, the number of edges, the number of inner faces, the number of nonroot-vertex-loops, the number of nonroot-vertex-blocks. As special cases, formulae for several types of rooted 4-regular maps such as 2-connected 4-regular projective planar maps, rooted 2-connected (connected) 4-regular projective planar maps without loops are also presented. Several known results on the number of 4-regular maps on the projective plane are also concluded. Finally, by use of Darboux's method, very nice asymptotic formulae for the numbers of those types of maps are given.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the rooted nonseparable maps on the sphere and the projective plane with the valency of root-face and the number of edges as parameters. Explicit expression of enumerating functions are obtained for such maps on the sphere and the projective plane. A parametric expression of the generating function is obtained for such maps on the projective plane, from which asymptotic evaluations are derived. Moreover, if the number of edges is sufficiently large, then almost all nonseparable maps on the projective plane are not triangulation.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a solution of the functional equation unsolved in the paper, by the second author, “On functional equations arising from map enumerations” that appeared in Discrete Math , 123 : 93–109 (1993). It is also the number of combinatorial distinct rooted general eulerian planar maps with the valency of root-vertex, the number of non-root vertices and non-root faces of the maps as three parameters. In particular, a result in the paper, by the same author, “On the number of eulerian planar maps” that appeared in Acta Math Sinica , 12 : 418–423 (1992) is simplified.
Explicit formulas for a family of hypermaps beyond the one-face case

Abstract:Enumeration of hypermaps is widely studied in many fields. In particular, enumerating hypermaps with a fixed edge-type according to the number of faces and genus is one topic of great interest. However, it is challenging and explicit results mainly exist for hypermaps having one face, especially for the edge-type corresponding to maps. The first systematic study of one-face hypermaps with any fixed edge-type is the work of Jackson (Trans.~Amer.~Math.~Soc.~299, 785--801, 1987) using group characters. In 2011, Stanley obtained the generating polynomial of one-face hypermaps of any fixed edge-type expressed in terms of the backward shift operator. There are also enormous amount of work on enumerating one-face hypermaps of specific edge-types. The enumeration of hypermaps with more faces is generally much harder. In this paper, we make some progress in that regard, and obtain the generating polynomials and properties for a family of typical two-face hypermaps with almost any fixed edge-type.
