Abstract:A near-triangular embedding is a graph embedded into some surface whose facial walks but one are 3-gons. In this paper the authors show that if a graph G is a triangulation of the sphere S0 (or the torus S1), then G has a near-triangular embedding into Sk for k = h, h + 1, …, [ β(G)/2], where h = 0(or 1) and β(G) is the Betti number of G.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the rooted nonseparable maps on the sphere and the projective plane with the valency of root-face and the number of edges as parameters. Explicit expression of enumerating functions are obtained for such maps on the sphere and the projective plane. A parametric expression of the generating function is obtained for such maps on the projective plane, from which asymptotic evaluations are derived. Moreover, if the number of edges is sufficiently large, then almost all nonseparable maps on the projective plane are not triangulation.

Abstract:It is well known that any explicit generating function with up to two or three parameters for non-planar maps can not be determined with easy because of difficulties in handling the essential circuits (or “noncontractible cycles” as some scholars called). In this paper the authors count rooted non-separatable near-triangulations on the projective plane by the root-face valency, the size, and the number of inner faces and a parametric expression, by which an explicit generating function with positive coefficients can be easily deduced, is completely determined as well.

Abstract:We study the geometry of some proper 4-colorings of the vertices of sphere triangulations with degree sequence 6,...,6,2,2,2. Such triangulations are the simplest examples which have non-negative combinatorial curvature. The examples we construct, which are roughly extremal in some sense, are based on a novel geometric interpretation of continued fractions. We also present a conjectural sharp "isoperimetric inequality" for colorings of this kind of triangulation.

Abstract:A map is unicursal if all its vertices are even-valent except two odd-valent vertices. A near-triangulation is a map with all but one of its face triangles. This paper investigates the enumeration of rooted unicursal planar near-triangulation and provides two functional equations satisfied by its generating functions with the root-face valency, the number of edges and the number of nonrooted vertices of maps as parameters.

Abstract:A rational spherical triangle is a triangle on the unit sphere such that the lengths of its three sides and its area are rational multiples of $\pi$. Little and Coxeter have given examples of rational spherical triangles in 1980s. In this work, we are interested in determining all the rational spherical triangles. We introduce a conjecture on the solutions to a trigonometric Diophantine equation. An implication of the conjecture is that the only rational spherical triangles are the ones given by Little and Coxeter. We prove some partial results towards the conjecture.

Abstract:We solve three enumerative problems concerning families of planar maps. More precisely, we establish algebraic equations for the generating function of non-separable triangulations in which all vertices have degree at least d, for a certain value d chosen in {3, 4, 5}. The originality of the problem lies in the fact that degree restrictions are placed both on vertices and faces. Our proofs first follow Tutte's classical approach: we decompose maps by deleting the root and translate the decomposition into an equation satisfied by the generating function of the maps under consideration. Then we proceed to solve the equation obtained using a recent technique that extends the so-called quadratic method.

Abstract:We apply Diophantine analysis to classify edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent almost equilateral quadrilaterals (i.e., edge combination ). Parallel to a complete classification by Cheung, Luk, and Yan, the method implemented here is more systematic and applicable to other related tiling problems. We also provide detailed geometric data for the tilings.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss face numbers of generalised triangulations of manifolds in arbitrary dimensions. This is motivated by the study of triangulations of simply connected $4$-manifolds: We observe that, for a triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ of a simply connected $4$-manifold $\mathcal{M}$ with $n$ pentachora, an upper bound on the number of vertices $v$ of $\mathcal{T}$ as a function of $n$ yields a lower bound for $n$ depending only on the second Betti number $\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$ of $\mathcal{M}$. Within this framework we conjecture that $v \leq \frac{n}{2}+4$, implying $n \geq 2\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$. In forthcoming work by the authors, this conjectured bound is shown to be almost tight for all values of $\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$, with a gap of at most two.
