Abstract:This paper investigates firm-level efficiency in the petroleum industry during the period 2009–2015. A Jackknife model averaging method and two stochastic frontier models are utilized to estimate the input-output relation more accurately. The derived efficiency is then decomposed to predict the effect of various efficiency determinants with an emphasis on gas ratio and ownership. A significantly negative effect of natural gas ratio (in production portfolio) on efficiency is found for both National Oil Companies (NOCs) and privately-owned International Oil Companies (IOCs). This finding implies that the decline in natural gas ratio for IOCs is economics-driven, and the incline in gas ratio for NOCs is environment-driven. Therefore, the environmental objective is the NOCs’ third non-commercial objective, alongside subsidizing below-market energy prices and offering excessive employment, as found in the literature. Governments may consider the transfer of subsidies from low energy prices to clean energy promotion, which leads to energy saving and emissions reduction.
Price Competition in Networked Markets: How do monopolies impact social welfare?

Abstract:We study the efficiency of allocations in large markets with a network structure where every seller owns an edge in a graph and every buyer desires a path connecting some nodes. While it is known that stable allocations in such settings can be very inefficient, the exact properties of equilibria in markets with multiple sellers are not fully understood even in single-source single-sink networks. In this work, we show that for a large class of natural buyer demand functions, we are guaranteed the existence of an equilibrium with several desirable properties. The crucial insight that we gain into the equilibrium structure allows us to obtain tight bounds on efficiency in terms of the various parameters governing the market, especially the number of monopolies M. All of our efficiency results extend to markets without the network structure. While it is known that monopolies can cause large inefficiencies in general, our main results for single-source single-sink networks indicate that for several natural demand functions the efficiency only drops linearly with M. For example, for concave demand we prove that the efficiency loss is at most a factor 1+M/2 from the optimum, for demand with monotone hazard rate it is at most 1+M, and for polynomial demand the efficiency decreases logarithmically with M. In contrast to previous work that showed that monopolies may adversely affect welfare, our main contribution is showing that monopolies may not be as `evil' as they are made out to be; the loss in efficiency is bounded in many natural markets. Finally, we consider more general, multiple-source networks and show that in the absence of monopolies, mild assumptions on the network topology guarantee an equilibrium that maximizes social welfare.

Abstract:In this paper we study the effect that the external management of a limited (natural) resource such as carbon dioxide or water quotas has on the behaviour of firms in a given sector. To do this, we choose a model in which all firms have the same technology and this is lineal. In the analysis of the problem games in partition function form arise in a natural way. It is proved, under certain conditions, that stable allocations exist in both cases with certainty and uncertainty.

Abstract:In this paper we deal with linear production situations in which there is a limited common-pool resource, managed by an external agent. The profit that a producer, or a group of producers, can attain depends on the amount of common-pool resource obtained through a certain procedure. We contemplate a competitive process among the producers or groups of producers and study the corresponding non cooperative games, describing their (strict) Nash equilibria in pure strategies. It is shown that strict Nash equilibria form a subset of strong Nash equilibria, which in turn form a proper subset of Nash equilibria.

Abstract:We analyse monopolistic competition when consumers have an indirect utility that is additively separable. This leads to markups depending on income (both in the short and long run) but not on the market size, which generates pricing to market, incomplete pass‐through and pure gains from variety for countries that open up to trade. Firms’ heterogeneity à la Melitz implies a Darwinian effect of consumers’ spending on business creation and a Linderian effect on (endogenous) quality provision. We discuss extensions with an outside good and heterogenous agents, and offer simple and tractable specifications (linear or log‐linear) of the demand functions.

Abstract:This paper studies the monotonicity of equilibrium costs and equilibrium loads in nonatomic congestion games, in response to variations of the demands. The main goal is to identify conditions under which a paradoxical non-monotone behavior can be excluded. In contrast to routing games with a single commodity, where the network topology is the sole determinant factor for monotonicity, for general congestion games with multiple commodities the structure of the strategy sets plays a crucial role. We frame our study in the general setting of congestion games, with a special focus on singleton congestion games, for which we establish the monotonicity of equilibrium loads with respect to every demand. We then provide conditions for comonotonicity of the equilibrium loads, i.e., we investigate when they jointly increase or decrease after variations of the demands. We finally extend our study from singleton congestion games to the larger class of constrained series-parallel congestion games, whose structure is reminiscent of the concept of a series-parallel network.

Abstract:We analyze the question of whether the outcome of an oligopoly exploiting a nonrenewable resource can be replicated by a related monopoly, within the framework of continuous time and Markov Perfect Nash Equilibrium. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions and find explicit solutions in some cases. Also, very simple models with externalities are shown which Nash equilibrium cannot be replicated in a monopoly.

Review of Radical Political Economics

Abstract:This paper examines whether, with the rise of monopoly capital, the classical theory of competition and the prices of production framework has to be replaced by a theory emphasizing the balance of power relations between different economic groups. It briefly reviews concepts of competition and monopoly power, the recent literature in support of classical competition, and develops a model synthesizing the Sraffian prices of production framework and the Kalecki-Steindl monopoly power theory. It shows that although monopoly power and the uniform rate of profit are not necessarily inconsistent, the theory of prices may well have to be revised as a result of the emergence of monopoly power.

Abstract:In many cases, the benefit to a consumer of a product increases with the number of other users of the same product. These demand interdependencies are referred to in the literature as positive demand externalities or network externalities. This paper examines the dynamic pricing behaviors of an incumbent and a later entrant, with special attention to the impacts of demand externalities, compatibility, and competition on prices and profits. Defining market power as the ability to price above a competitor without losing market share, we show how demand externalities and installed base combine to confer market power. We model optimal pricing as a differential game with the optimal price trajectory established as Nash open-loop controls. For a duopoly durable goods market with strong demand externalities, the results show an increasing price trajectory can be optimal. As expected, a new entrant is better off if its products are compatible with those of the incumbent, especially when demand externalities are strong and the installed base of the incumbent is large. Less intuitively, the incumbent as well may be better off agreeing on common standards. The comparison of monopoly and duopoly shows that under strong demand externalities and a small installed base, the incumbent profits from compatible entry.

Abstract:We consider the problem of how to regulate an oligopoly when firms have private information about their costs. In the environment, consumers make discrete choices over goods, and minimal structure is placed on the manner in which firms compete. In the optimal regulatory policy, the regulator need only solicit prices from firms, and based on those prices, charge them taxes or give them subsidies, and impose on each firm a ``yardstick'' price cap that depends on the posted prices of competing firms.

Abstract:Competition usually increases firm productivity; but in network industries, effective competition requires vertical separation, which might reduce productivity and lead to a potential trade-off. We analyze the combined effect of competition and vertical separation on inefficient costs for US electricity industry restructuring. We estimate firm-level inefficiencies with the use of different nonparametric models of the technology and calculate net benefits with the use of difference-in-differences. The results depend on how we model the production technology and the length of the post-treatment horizon. The more flexible is the production frontier, the greater is the net benefit from divestiture and competition. Across our models the combined effect of divestiture and competition is positive.

Abstract:Equilibria and optima generally differ in imperfectly competitive markets. While this is well understood theoretically, it is unclear how large the welfare distortions are in the aggregate economy. Do they matter quantitatively? To answer this question, we develop a multi-sector monopolistic competition model with endogenous firm entry and selection, productivity, and markups. Using French and British data, we quantify the gap between the equilibrium and optimal allocations. In our preferred specification, inefficiencies in the labor allocation and entry between sectors, as well as inefficient selection and output per firm within sectors, generate welfare losses of about 6–10% of GDP.

Abstract:This paper studies whether imposing carbon costs changes the supply chain structure and social welfare. We explore the problem from a central policymaker's perspective who wants to maximize social welfare. We consider two stakeholders, retailers, and consumers, who optimize their own objectives (i.e., profits and net utility) and three competitive settings (i.e., monopoly, monopolistic competition with symmetric market share, and monopolistic competition with asymmetric market share). For the monopoly case, we find that when the retailer's profit is high, imposing some carbon emission charges on the retailer and the consumers does not substantially change the supply chain structure or the social welfare. However, when the retailer's profit is low, imposing carbon costs optimally can lead to a significant increase in social welfare. Moreover, the impact of imposing carbon emission charges becomes more significant when the degree of competition increases. Additionally, the quantum of benefit may depend only on factors common across industries, such as fuel and carbon costs.

Abstract:What is the ideal way for a government regulate an existing transportation monopoly based on the structure of the transport market? We analyze the government's regulatory problem from the perspective of two possible strategies: partially publicizing the existing monopolist, and entering the transport market directly as a competitor. In a model in which heterogeneous consumers are uniformly distributed in their valuation of transportation services while also considering both price and travel latency in their transport choice, we fully characterize the equilibrium under each of the two regulatory strategies, under a serial or a parallel transport structure, respectively. The optimal policy depends on both the transport route structure and the government's degree of intervention. Under a serial structure, the government can achieve the socially optimal traffic flow by entering the market as a competing firm and providing a subsidy on its route segment. However, in a parallel structure, while direct duopoly competition cannot achieve a socially optimal result, direct competition can outperform partially publicizing the monopolist if the acquisition level is sufficiently low. Our findings provide policy implications for governments interested in applying efficient regulatory policies under different transportation route structures.

Abstract:We examine the relationship between competition and innovation in an industry where production is polluting and R&D aims to reduce emissions ("green" innovation). We present an n-firm oligopoly where firms compete in quantities and decide their investment in "green" R&D. When environmental taxation is exogenous, aggregate R&D investment always increases with the number of firms in the industry. Next we analyse the case where the emission tax is set endogenously by a regulator (committed or time-consistent) with the aim to maximise social welfare. We show that an inverted-U relationship exists between aggregate R&D and industry size under reasonable conditions, and is driven by the presence of R&D spillovers.

Abstract:We consider a bilateral monopoly where a linear input price is determined by Nash bargaining. We show, with an increasing marginal cost of input production, that vertical integration reduces consumer surplus and welfare compared with bilateral monopoly if the bargaining power of the input supplier is low. This result is important for competition policies as it questions the common wisdom suggesting vertical integration increases welfare by eliminating the problem of double marginalization. Overproduction under bilateral monopoly compared with vertical integration is the reason for our result. Interestingly, consumer surplus and welfare can be higher under a linear input price compared with a two‐part tariff input price.

Abstract:We propose a simple dynamical model of the formation of production networks among monopolistically competitive firms. The model subsumes the standard general equilibrium approach à la Arrow-Debreu but displays a wide set of potential dynamic behaviors. It robustly reproduces key stylized facts of firms' demographics. Our main result is that competition between intermediate good producers generically leads to the emergence of scale-free production networks.

Abstract:This paper reconsiders the comparison of horizontal two‐firm mergers in differentiated oligopolies, originally explored with the assumption that the merged firm produces a single product. By relaxing this assumption, our analysis presents a contrast to previous findings that suggested that a two‐firm merger is more likely under the Cournot competition than under the Bertrand competition. We find that the opposite holds true if the merged firm chooses to produce one or both products post‐merger. Moreover, we demonstrate that, in most circumstances, and under either the Cournot or Bertrand competition, the merged firm has an incentive to produce both products post‐merger.
