Abstract:This article presents a literature review of the applications of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). AHP is a multiple criteria decision-making tool that has been used in almost all the applications related with decision-making. Out of many different applications of AHP, this article covers a select few, which could be of wide interest to the researchers and practitioners. The article critically analyses some of the papers published in international journals of high repute, and gives a brief idea about many of the referred publications. Papers are categorized according to the identified themes, and on the basis of the areas of applications. The references have also been grouped region-wise and year-wise in order to track the growth of AHP applications. To help readers extract quick and meaningful information, the references are summarized in various tabular formats and charts.A total of 150 application papers are referred to in this paper, 27 of them are critically analyzed. It is hoped that this work will provide a ready reference on AHP, and act as an informative summary kit for the researchers and practitioners for their future work.

Abstract:Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a popular and long used multi-criteria decision analysis method. Despite this fact, there are still space for new research in all its methodological steps. These include problem structuring, pairwise comparisons, priorities derivation, consistency and reduction techniques of pairwise comparisons. Moreover, future research agenda can also be found in the extensions of AHP: Analytic Network Process (for dealing with interactions) and AHPSort (for sorting problems). Finally, we discuss visualisation techniques for the Analytic Hierarchy Process.

Abstract:This exposition on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has the following objectives: (1) to discuss why AHP is a general methodology for a wide variety of decision and other applications, (2) to present brief descriptions of successful applications of the AHP, and (3) to elaborate on academic discourses relevant to the efficacy and applicability of the AHP vis-a-vis competing methodologies. We discuss the three primary functions of the AHP: structuring complexity, measurement on a ratio scale, and synthesis, as well as the principles and axioms underlying these functions. Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed literature review of the recent applications of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and analytic network process (ANP) group decision‐making methodologies. Design/methodology/approach Among more than 600 related papers published in the period 2005‐2009, a total of 232 application articles published in highly reputed international academic journals were selected and referenced in this paper. Papers were categorized according to application areas, subject titles, publication date, country of origin, academic journals, and integrated methodologies, and are summarized herein by various tables and charts. Findings The findings show that during the years 2005‐2009, use of the AHP technique has continued to increase exponentially. Moreover, it is expected that ANP will gain more popularity in the future, as the benefits of ANP become better understood. Applications of AHP have been dominant in manufacturing, followed by the environmental management and agriculture field, power and energy industry, transportation industry, construction industry, and healthcare. Other remarkable application fields include education, logistics, e‐business, IT, R&D, telecommunication industry, finance and banking, urban management, defense industry and military, government, marketing, tourism and leisure, archaeology, auditing, and the mining industry. Research limitations/implications The study does not consider theoretical based AHP or ANP articles. Also the search excluded conference proceedings, masters' theses, and doctoral dissertations. Practical implications It is hoped that this study will guide practitioners in future work towards advancement of these techniques and will help the managers to select better decisions by making use of these methodologies. Originality/value The paper presents a comprehensive literature review of recent applications of AHP, and also ANP decision tools over the period 2005‐2009. Furthermore, the paper covers fuzzy AHP and fuzzy ANP extensions that are becoming popular methods in some application areas of traditional AHP and ANP.

Abstract:The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), and Analytic Network Process (ANP) methods are widely used for decision-making across various fields, and have shown success in numerous applications within human resource management (HRM). The purpose of this study is to present a systematic literature review on the applications of AHP, FAHP, and ANP in human resource management. The search process encompassed two main online databases, Scopus and Web of Science. This research covers a total of 180 application papers. To help readers extract quick and meaningful information, references are summarized in tabular format. The results showed that these methods have been applied in various domains of HRM such as performance management and appraisal, selecting human resources, talent attraction and retention, intellectual capital, workplace safety, reward management, e-HRM, green HRM, etc. To the best of our knowledge, no comprehensive research review has yet been conducted on the applications of AHP in HRM.

Abstract:AHP (analytic hierarchy process), as a comprehensive safety evaluation method combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, has been used in many fields of safety and environmental science. The applications of AHP, improved AHP, FAHP (fuzzy AHP), improved FAHP and gray AHP in safety and environmental science were analyzed, summarized and prospected. The major factors affecting the work of occupational hazard supervision were analyzed. Considering the advantages that AHP can decompose the complex issues and provide the scientific basis for the choice of optimal decisions, it was proposed to use AHP in the fields of occupational hazard supervision.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on the applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in operations management and suggest possible gaps from the point of view of researchers and practitioners. This paper systematically categorises the published literature from 1990 to 2009 in 291 peer reviewed journals articles (searched via Emerald, Ingenta, MetaPress, ProQuest, and ScienceDirect) and then reviews and analyses them methodologically. Our analysis has revealed that a significant number of AHP applications are found when problems require considerations of both quantitative and qualitative factors (e.g., socioeconomic operations decisions). AHP has been largely applied to macro (complex and real) and people (managerial–subjective) oriented problems. The most addressed decision themes are product and process design and, managing the supply chain. A majority of AHP applications are application or case study oriented and only a few papers aimed at contributing to AHP modelling before applying to practical problems. Our review has found that significant research gap exists in the application of AHP in the areas of forecasting, layout of facilities and managing stocks. This paper presents a comprehensive listing of AHP applications in operations management and develops a framework for identifying the decision areas that have better research gaps to be studied by future researchers.

Abstract:The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is a widely used multi-criteria decision-making method to address a variety of problems in the presence of conflicting or uncertain criteria. One of the key issue associated with AHP lies in the conversion of human intuition into the numerical values. To address this problem, the integration of fuzzy set theory into classical AHP has emerged as a popular approach. Fuzzy AHP (FAHP) methods represent human preferences using fuzzy numbers to incorporate vague or imprecise information, which allows FAHP methods to capture the inherent fuzziness of human decision-making. FAHP have gained attention from both researchers and practitioners, however, the effectiveness of FAHP methods is still debated. This study conducted a thorough numerical and empirical study to evaluate the efficacy of representing preferences and judgments in the form of fuzzy numbers in the AHP framework. The findings of this study showed that, in general, classical AHP methods yield significantly better results compared to existing FAHP methods. However, the study also found that there may be some potential benefits to using the FAHP approach, which warrant further investigation.

Abstract:We discuss aspects of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) that we feel are important to the successful presentation of the AHP to graduate business students. We have also created a working paper that presents some of the examples and class projects that we found to be of pedagogical value. This working paper can be obtained by email from the first author (lbodin@rhsmith.umd.edu).Scope and purposeSince its inception nearly 25 years ago, the AHP has been widely used to solve a broad range of multi-criteria decision problems. Successful applications can be found in business, industry, government, and the military. The community of operations research (OR) practitioners has incorporated the AHP in its methodological tool-bag while a number of university programs include AHP in courses covering decision-making techniques or in general OR courses. Instructors new to the topic need to be concerned with how the fundamental concepts of the AHP are first presented to students. Based on our teaching experiences, we discuss our view of how key elements of the AHP should be presented in the classroom in the hope it will aid instructors to understand better the important decision-aiding framework of the AHP.

Abstract:Here we introduce the Analytic Hierarchy Process as a method of measurement with ratio scales and illustrate it with two examples. We then give the axioms and some of the central theoretical underpinnings of the theory. Finally, we discuss some of the ideas relating to this process and its ramifications. In this paper we give special emphasis to departure from consistency and its measurement and to the use of absolute and relative measurement, providing examples and justification for rank preservation and reversal in relative measurement.

Abstract:Decisions involve many intangibles that need to be traded off. To do that, they have to be measured along side tangibles whose measurements must also be evaluated as to, how well, they serve the objectives of the decision maker. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a theory of measurement through pairwise comparisons and relies on the judgements of experts to derive priority scales. It is these scales that measure intangibles in relative terms. The comparisons are made using a scale of absolute judgements that represents, how much more, one element dominates another with respect to a given attribute. The judgements may be inconsistent, and how to measure inconsistency and improve the judgements, when possible to obtain better consistency is a concern of the AHP. The derived priority scales are synthesised by multiplying them by the priority of their parent nodes and adding for all such nodes. An illustration is included.

Abstract:This research aims to analyze a literature review of publications that have incorporated the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Analytic Network Process (ANP) methods. The AHP and ANP methods have contributed to decision-making in complex situations in recent years and possess widespread applications. Such applications are spread over the years with publications in various major areas such as engineering/technology/applied sciences, social sciences, health sciences, and environmental studies. These two methods provide multiple solutions to researchers in these fields, which is why they are being considered in the current study. For this purpose, data was collected from 920 research papers after a vigorous literature review using different search engines. This paper aims to classify the publications on AHP and ANP methods from the years 2000 to 2019 to identify recognized journals based on their indexes. Furthermore, another objective of this study is to compare total publications by year, publications by field by year, and lastly, observe the distribution by country of the studies. This paper concludes that the highest number of publications are from Turkey, and the highest number of publications used AHP method applications in every category. Most of the publications belonged to the technical fields, followed by social sciences. The study concluded that the AHP method is more widely preferred by researchers in almost every field and application because it tends to produce more accurate results than the ANP.

Abstract:In the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), Saaty's consistency index is performed to ensure that the preference information, provided in an individual judgement matrix, is neither random nor illogical. Based on the extension of Saaty's consistency index, this paper proposes a consensus index to measure the difference between the individual preference values and the collective preference value in AHP group decision making. Furthermore, based on the consensus index, we propose a consensus prioritisation method to obtain the collective priority vector for AHP group decision making, and develop a non-linear programme model to automatically reach acceptable consensus in a local context (a unique criterion). The consensus model in this paper can optimally preserve original preference information in reaching acceptable consensus (in some sense). A genetic algorithm also is designed to solve this non-linear programme model.

Abstract:<p>Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a broadly applied multi-criteria decision-making method to determine the weights of criteria and priorities of alternatives in a structured manner based on pairwise comparison. As subjective judgments during comparison might be imprecise, fuzzy sets have been combined with AHP. This is referred to as fuzzy AHP or FAHP. An increasing amount of papers are published which describe different ways to derive the weights/priorities from a fuzzy comparison matrix, but seldomly set out the relative benefits of each approach so that the choice of the approach seems arbitrary. A review of various fuzzy AHP techniques is required to guide both academic and industrial experts to choose suitable techniques for a specific practical context. This paper reviews the literature published since 2008 where fuzzy AHP is applied to decision-making problems in industry, particularly the various selection problems. The techniques are categorised by the four aspects of developing a fuzzy AHP model: (i) representation of the relative importance for pairwise comparison, (ii) aggregation of fuzzy sets for group decisions and weights/priorities, (iii) defuzzification of a fuzzy set to a crisp value for final comparison, and (iv) consistency measurement of the judgements. These techniques are discussed in terms of their underlying principles, origins, strengths and weakness. Summary tables and specification charts are provided to guide the selection of suitable techniques. Tips for building a fuzzy AHP model are also included and six open questions are posed for future work.</p>

Abstract:The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) remains a popular multi-criteria decision method. The author has implemented a free, web-based AHP online system with noteworthy features, allowing for the detailed analysis of decision problems. Besides standard functions, like flexible decision hierarchies, support to improve inconsistent judgments, and alternative evaluation and sensitivity analysis, the software can handle group input, calculate group consensus based on Shannon ? and ?-entropy and estimate weight uncertainties based on randomized small variations of input judgments. In addition, different AHP judgment scales can be applied a posteriori and alternative evaluation can be done using the weighted sum (WSM) or weighted product model (WPM). This flexibility opens up opportunities to study decision projects under various parameters. The author’s intention was to provide a complete and free software tool for educational and research purposes where calculations and algorithms are well documented and all input data and results can be exported in an open format for further processing or presentation. The article describes the basic concept and structure of the software and the underlying mathematical algorithms and methods. Challenges and practical experiences during the implementation, validation and productive phase of the software are highlighted.

Abstract:Because of its great flexibility and wide applicability, integrated analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approaches have been studied extensively for the last 20 years. This paper, as a follow-up study to Ho (2008), reviews the literature on the integrated AHP approaches and applications published between 2007 and 2016 and compares those studies with papers published during the previous decade, i.e., 1997–2006. Based on the 88 journal articles, five questions can be answered: (1) which type of integrated AHP approaches was paid most attention to? (2) Which application areas were integrated AHP approaches primarily applied to? (3) Which specific problems were integrated AHP approaches most commonly applied to? (4) What is the trend in publications regarding integrated AHP approaches? and (5) Which international journals were integrated AHP approaches most widely published in? Finally, some new applications of new AHP integrations are proposed to assist scholars in filling the literature research gaps.

Abstract:A well-regarded as well as powerful method named the ‘analytic hierarchy process’ (AHP) uses mathematics and psychology for making and analysing complex decisions. This article aims to present a brief review of the consistency measure of the judgments in AHP. Judgments should not be random or illogical. Several researchers have developed different consistency measures to identify the rationality of judgments. This article summarises the consistency measures which have been proposed so far in the literature. Moreover, this paper describes briefly the functional relationships established in the literature among the well-known consistency indices. At last, some thoughtful research directions that can be helpful in further research to develop and improve the performance of AHP are provided as well.
