Abstract:In the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), Saaty's consistency index is performed to ensure that the preference information, provided in an individual judgement matrix, is neither random nor illogical. Based on the extension of Saaty's consistency index, this paper proposes a consensus index to measure the difference between the individual preference values and the collective preference value in AHP group decision making. Furthermore, based on the consensus index, we propose a consensus prioritisation method to obtain the collective priority vector for AHP group decision making, and develop a non-linear programme model to automatically reach acceptable consensus in a local context (a unique criterion). The consensus model in this paper can optimally preserve original preference information in reaching acceptable consensus (in some sense). A genetic algorithm also is designed to solve this non-linear programme model.

Abstract:This exposition on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has the following objectives: (1) to discuss why AHP is a general methodology for a wide variety of decision and other applications, (2) to present brief descriptions of successful applications of the AHP, and (3) to elaborate on academic discourses relevant to the efficacy and applicability of the AHP vis-a-vis competing methodologies. We discuss the three primary functions of the AHP: structuring complexity, measurement on a ratio scale, and synthesis, as well as the principles and axioms underlying these functions. Abstract:Decisions involve many intangibles that need to be traded off. To do that, they have to be measured along side tangibles whose measurements must also be evaluated as to, how well, they serve the objectives of the decision maker. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a theory of measurement through pairwise comparisons and relies on the judgements of experts to derive priority scales. It is these scales that measure intangibles in relative terms. The comparisons are made using a scale of absolute judgements that represents, how much more, one element dominates another with respect to a given attribute. The judgements may be inconsistent, and how to measure inconsistency and improve the judgements, when possible to obtain better consistency is a concern of the AHP. The derived priority scales are synthesised by multiplying them by the priority of their parent nodes and adding for all such nodes. An illustration is included.

Abstract:Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a popular and long used multi-criteria decision analysis method. Despite this fact, there are still space for new research in all its methodological steps. These include problem structuring, pairwise comparisons, priorities derivation, consistency and reduction techniques of pairwise comparisons. Moreover, future research agenda can also be found in the extensions of AHP: Analytic Network Process (for dealing with interactions) and AHPSort (for sorting problems). Finally, we discuss visualisation techniques for the Analytic Hierarchy Process.

Abstract:In group decision making, one strives to reconcile differences of opinions (judgments) expressed by individual members of the group. Fuzzy-decision-making mechanisms bring a great deal of flexibility. By admitting membership degrees, we are offered flexibility to exploit different aggregation mechanisms and navigate a process of interaction among decision makers to achieve an increasing level of consistency within the group. While the studies reported so far exploit more or less sophisticated ways of adjusting/transforming initial judgments (preferences) of individuals, in this paper, we bring forward a concept of information granularity. Here, information granularity is viewed as an essential asset, which offers a decision maker a tangible level of flexibility using some initial preferences conveyed by each individual that can be adjusted with the intent to reach a higher level of consensus. Our study is concerned with an extension of the well-known analytic hierarchy process to the group decision-making scenario. More specifically, the admitted level of granularity gives rise to a granular matrix of pairwise comparisons. The granular entries represented, e.g., by intervals or fuzzy sets, supply a required flexibility using the fact that we select the most suitable numeric representative of the reciprocal matrix. The proposed concept of granular reciprocal matrices is used to optimize a performance index, which comes as an additive combination of two components. The first one expresses a level of consistency of the individual pairwise comparison matrices; by exploiting the admitted level of granularity, we aim at the minimization of the corresponding inconsistency index. The second part of the performance index quantifies a level of disagreement in terms of the individual preferences. The flexibility offered by the level of granularity is used to increase the level of consensus within the group. Given an implicit nature of relationships between the realizations of - - the granular pairwise matrices and the values of the performance index, we consider using particle swarm optimization as an optimization vehicle. Two scenarios of allocation of granularity among decision makers are considered, namely, a uniform allocation of granularity and nonuniform distribution of granularity, where the levels of allocated granularity are also subject to optimization. A number of numeric studies are provided to illustrate an essence of the method.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed literature review of the recent applications of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and analytic network process (ANP) group decision‐making methodologies. Design/methodology/approach Among more than 600 related papers published in the period 2005‐2009, a total of 232 application articles published in highly reputed international academic journals were selected and referenced in this paper. Papers were categorized according to application areas, subject titles, publication date, country of origin, academic journals, and integrated methodologies, and are summarized herein by various tables and charts. Findings The findings show that during the years 2005‐2009, use of the AHP technique has continued to increase exponentially. Moreover, it is expected that ANP will gain more popularity in the future, as the benefits of ANP become better understood. Applications of AHP have been dominant in manufacturing, followed by the environmental management and agriculture field, power and energy industry, transportation industry, construction industry, and healthcare. Other remarkable application fields include education, logistics, e‐business, IT, R&D, telecommunication industry, finance and banking, urban management, defense industry and military, government, marketing, tourism and leisure, archaeology, auditing, and the mining industry. Research limitations/implications The study does not consider theoretical based AHP or ANP articles. Also the search excluded conference proceedings, masters' theses, and doctoral dissertations. Practical implications It is hoped that this study will guide practitioners in future work towards advancement of these techniques and will help the managers to select better decisions by making use of these methodologies. Originality/value The paper presents a comprehensive literature review of recent applications of AHP, and also ANP decision tools over the period 2005‐2009. Furthermore, the paper covers fuzzy AHP and fuzzy ANP extensions that are becoming popular methods in some application areas of traditional AHP and ANP.

Abstract:We discuss aspects of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) that we feel are important to the successful presentation of the AHP to graduate business students. We have also created a working paper that presents some of the examples and class projects that we found to be of pedagogical value. This working paper can be obtained by email from the first author (lbodin@rhsmith.umd.edu).Scope and purposeSince its inception nearly 25 years ago, the AHP has been widely used to solve a broad range of multi-criteria decision problems. Successful applications can be found in business, industry, government, and the military. The community of operations research (OR) practitioners has incorporated the AHP in its methodological tool-bag while a number of university programs include AHP in courses covering decision-making techniques or in general OR courses. Instructors new to the topic need to be concerned with how the fundamental concepts of the AHP are first presented to students. Based on our teaching experiences, we discuss our view of how key elements of the AHP should be presented in the classroom in the hope it will aid instructors to understand better the important decision-aiding framework of the AHP.

Abstract:This article presents a literature review of the applications of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). AHP is a multiple criteria decision-making tool that has been used in almost all the applications related with decision-making. Out of many different applications of AHP, this article covers a select few, which could be of wide interest to the researchers and practitioners. The article critically analyses some of the papers published in international journals of high repute, and gives a brief idea about many of the referred publications. Papers are categorized according to the identified themes, and on the basis of the areas of applications. The references have also been grouped region-wise and year-wise in order to track the growth of AHP applications. To help readers extract quick and meaningful information, the references are summarized in various tabular formats and charts.A total of 150 application papers are referred to in this paper, 27 of them are critically analyzed. It is hoped that this work will provide a ready reference on AHP, and act as an informative summary kit for the researchers and practitioners for their future work.

Abstract:Managers have to make decisions several times a day. The decision-making process can be defined as an essential activity realized by managers every day. Decisions can be implemented intuitively, or by using relevant decision-making methods. This depends on the nature of the decision, as well as the intensity of its possible future effects. The theory of decision-making can be defined as a relatively young discipline. It can be stated that decision-making is no longer an intuitive process. Most decision-making situations are of a multiple criteria character. In this contribution, the authors focus on multiple-criteria decision-making, to which several methods can be applied. In the practical part, the authors use Saaty's method, also known as the Analytic Hierarchy Process. Saaty is considered to be the most important researcher dealing with the issue of multiple-criteria decision-making. The set multiple-criteria decision-making problem was to choose one business partner out of eight under consideration. The decision-making criteria included selected financial indicators and non-financial criteria. The aim of the contribution is to use the Analytic Hierarchy Process to assess potential business partners and to select an optimal candidate.

So the quality of information given by each decision-maker is also different. Thus the high and the low quality information should be treated differently. Abstract:In practical multi-alternative decision-making problems, the decision-makers usually assign the evaluation values with uncertainty degrees rather than precise ratings. Dealing with the inconsistency of the judgment matrix constructed by pairwise comparison is also a problem. By employing the properties of triangular fuzzy number (TFN) and logarithmic least-squares method (LLSM) to treat a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) problem, this paper presents a new TFN-based AHP method. In contrast to the existing fuzzy AHP methods, the method developed herein can effectively handle disagreements between different rankings and elicit priorities from the alternative set without taking the inconsistency of corresponding judgment matrix into consideration. The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method in deriving the most promising alternative within a group decision-making environment is demonstrated by an illustrative example.

Abstract:The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) remains a popular multi-criteria decision method. The author has implemented a free, web-based AHP online system with noteworthy features, allowing for the detailed analysis of decision problems. Besides standard functions, like flexible decision hierarchies, support to improve inconsistent judgments, and alternative evaluation and sensitivity analysis, the software can handle group input, calculate group consensus based on Shannon ? and ?-entropy and estimate weight uncertainties based on randomized small variations of input judgments. In addition, different AHP judgment scales can be applied a posteriori and alternative evaluation can be done using the weighted sum (WSM) or weighted product model (WPM). This flexibility opens up opportunities to study decision projects under various parameters. The author’s intention was to provide a complete and free software tool for educational and research purposes where calculations and algorithms are well documented and all input data and results can be exported in an open format for further processing or presentation. The article describes the basic concept and structure of the software and the underlying mathematical algorithms and methods. Challenges and practical experiences during the implementation, validation and productive phase of the software are highlighted.

A Fuzzy Group Decision Making Method with Positive and Negative Comparisons in the Ahp Method

Abstract:In this article, we are concerned with developing a comprehensive fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process)-based Group Decision Making (GDM) framework. Traditional AHP- based GDM models assume all decision maker express their comparisons using nine integers (using the scale of integers {1, 2, 3, …, 9}) which ignores measuring the comprehensiveness of thinking of a certain decision maker since he/she only displays own positive comparisons. In contrast, negative comparisons together with positive ones compel decision makers to balance more factors thereby increasing the individual’s consistency. We construct a corresponding positive-negative comparisons based GDM framework that simultaneously incorporates fuzzy terms and weight distribution mechanisms. The key feature of this study is to develop a sound design framework by considering human beings’ variability and the ambiguity of linguistic terms in GDM and provide an initially different evaluation strategy and carry out its subsequent analysis framework. A fuzzy Geometric Consistency Index (GCI) test is designed to evaluate the consistency of fuzzy AHP problems. Meanwhile, Tucker's congruence coefficient (TCC) method is used to dynamically evaluate the importance level of each decision maker before aggregation. Some illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), and Analytic Network Process (ANP) methods are widely used for decision-making across various fields, and have shown success in numerous applications within human resource management (HRM). The purpose of this study is to present a systematic literature review on the applications of AHP, FAHP, and ANP in human resource management. The search process encompassed two main online databases, Scopus and Web of Science. This research covers a total of 180 application papers. To help readers extract quick and meaningful information, references are summarized in tabular format. The results showed that these methods have been applied in various domains of HRM such as performance management and appraisal, selecting human resources, talent attraction and retention, intellectual capital, workplace safety, reward management, e-HRM, green HRM, etc. To the best of our knowledge, no comprehensive research review has yet been conducted on the applications of AHP in HRM.

Abstract:In view of uncertainty degree of judgment in group-evaluation problem, a new method combined the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with the basic theory of triangular fuzzy number was given in this paper. A real case study of personnel selection in Matlab environment demonstrated its application and examined its effectiveness. The use of this proposed method indicates that it is easier for the evaluation team not only to obtain impartial and reasonable resulting value, but also to arrive at a consensus decision. Moreover, the consistent degree of decision or opinion of each decision element from different expert can be showed clearly.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">This paper considers a decision making problem encountered by a natural gas pipeline construction company having a set of ongoing projects and facing unpredictable risks that can result in large deviations from planned schedules. This situation forces the company to consider the decision of halting one or more projects to avoid future losses and to allow for possible reallocation of some of their resources to other ongoing projects. This decision making problem involves different factors and criteria that need to be combined in an organized structure that exploits assessments of experts managing such projects. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is found to be suitable for guiding decisions in this problem. A case study for a major natural gas pipeline construction company in Egypt is presented, where three ongoing projects are considered. The proposed AHP structure, along with collected pairwise comparison scores and calculated priorities, suggests halting one project. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of changes in the pairwise comparison scores assigned to the main criteria on the final decision. The results and analysis provide some insights regarding the application of the AHP and the relative importance of the factors affecting decisions.</p>

Abstract:The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a widely used method for multi-criteria decision-making that relies on consistency in pairwise comparisons. However, decision-makers often struggle to provide fully consistent judgments in real-world scenarios. This article introduces a decision-making framework that operates independently of consistency. Utilizing the Skew-Symmetric Bilinear representation of preferences allows decision-makers to more accurately evaluate alternatives and criteria, making this framework more applicable in practical settings. The proposed method is validated through practical examples and an in-depth case study in the textile industry, effectively resolving a complex decision-making problem related to acquiring a data analytics tool for supplier selection. The results underscore the robustness and flexibility of this consistency-independent technique as an alternative to traditional AHP methods.
