Abstract:We consider normal rational projective surfaces with torus action and provide a formula for their Picard index, that means the index of the Picard group inside the divisor class group. As an application, we classify the log del Pezzo surfaces with torus action of Picard number one up to Picard index 10,000.

Let $\mathcal{Q}:=\textrm{Quot}_{C/{\mathbb{C}}}(E,k,d)$ denote the Quot scheme of quotients of $E$ of rank $k$ and degree $d$. For $k>0$ and $d\gg 0$, we compute the Picard group of $\mathcal{Q}$.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a certain affine algebraic surface over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that it admits a regular map to $\mathbb{A}^2/\mathbb{Q}$. We show that any non-trivial torsion line bundle in the relative Picard group $Pic^0\left(S/\mathbb{A}^2\right)$ can be pulled back to ideal classes of quadratic fields whose order can be made sufficiently large. This gives an affirmative answer to a question raised by Agboola and Pappas, in case of affine algebraic surfaces. For a closed point $P\in \mathbb{A}^2/\mathbb{Q}$, we show that the cardinality of a subgroup of the Picard group of the fiber $S_P$ remains unchanged when $P$ varies over a Zarisky open subset in $\mathbb{A}^2$. We also show by constructing an element of odd order $n\geq 3$ in the class group of certain imaginary quadratic fields that the Picard group of $S_P$ has a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:We compute the algebraic Picard group of the category of $K(n)$-local spectra, for all heights $n$ and all primes $p$. In particular, we show that it is always finitely generated over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and, whenever $n \geq 2$, is of rank $2$, thereby confirming a prediction made by Hopkins in the early 1990s. In fact, with the exception of the anomalous case $n=p=2$, we provide a full set of topological generators for these groups. Our arguments rely on recent advances in $p$-adic geometry to translate the problem to a computation on Drinfeld's symmetric space, which can then be solved using results of Colmez--Dospinescu--Niziol.

On The Telescopic Picard Group

Abstract:We prove that for any prime $p$ and height $n \ge 1$, the telescopic Picard group $\mathrm{Pic}(\mathrm{Sp}_{Tn})$ contains a subgroup of the form $\mathbb{Z}_p \times \mathbb{Z}/a_p(p^n-1)$, where $a_p = 1$ if $p = 2$ and $a_p = 2$ if $p$ is odd. Using Kummer theory, we obtain an $(\mathbb{F}_{p^n}^\times \rtimes \mathbb{Z}/n)$-Galois extension of $\mathbb{S}_{T(n)}$, obtaining the first example of a lift of a non-Abelian Galois extension of the $K(n)$-local sphere to the telescopic world, at arbitrary positive height and prime. Our proof proceeds by setting up a higher categorical framework for the periodicity theorem, utilizing the symmetries of this framework to construct Picard elements.

Abstract:Examples of algebraic surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number are not abundant in the literature. Moreover, most known examples either possess low invariants, lie near the Noether line $K^2=2\chi-6$ or are somewhat scattered. A notable exception is Persson's sequence of double covers of the projective plane with maximal Picard number, whose invariants converge to the Severi line $K^2=4\chi$. This note is devoted to the construction of infinitely many new sequences of surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number whose invariants converge to the Severi line.

Abstract:We study the shapes of all Newton-Okounkov bodies $\Delta_{v}(D)$ of a given big divisor $D$ on a surface $S$ with respect to all rank 2 valuations $v$ of $K(S)$. We obtain upper bounds for, and in many cases we determine exactly, the possible numbers of vertices of the bodies $\Delta_{v}(D)$. The upper bounds are expressed in terms of Picard numbers and they are birationally invariant, as they do not depend on the model $\tilde{S}$ where the valuation $v$ becomes a flag valuation. We also conjecture that the set of all Newton-Okounkov bodies of a single ample divisor $D$ determines the Picard number of $S$, and prove that this is the case for Picard number 1, by an explicit characterization of surfaces of Picard number 1 in terms of Newton-Okounkov bodies.

Abstract:For the universal family of cyclic covers of projective spaces branched along hyperplane arrangements in general position, we consider its monodromy group acting on an eigenspace of the middle cohomology of the fiber. We prove the monodromy group is Zariski dense in the corresponding linear group. As an application, we show the fundamental group of the moduli space of hyperplane arrangements is large. It can be viewed as a degenerate analogy of Carlson-Toledo's result about the monodromy groups of smooth hypersurfaces [3]. The main ingredient in the proof is a Picard-Lefschetz type formula for a suitable degeneration of this family.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify Du Val del Pezzo surfaces of Picard rank one in characteristic two and three. We also show that if a Du Val del Pezzo surface is Frobenius split, then a general anti-canonical member is smooth. Furthermore, in characteristic two, it is an ordinary elliptic curve.

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.
