Abstract:We compute the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order two, and of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order three, over any base scheme on which 6 is invertible. This generalizes a result of Fulton-Olsson, who computed the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves (with no level structure) over a wide variety of base schemes.

Abstract:In this paper we give a construction of algebraic (Artin) stacks endowed with a modular map onto the moduli stack of n-pointed stable curves of genus g, for g greater than 2. These stacks are smooth, irreducible and have dimension 4g-3+n, yielding a geometrically meaningful compactification of the degree d universal Picard stack over the moduli stack of smooth curves with marked points.

Abstract:We describe the Picard group of a tame stacky curve as an extension of two groups, which depend on the gerbe class of the curve over its rigidification, a stacky curve with trivial generic stabilizer, and the residual gerbes of the rigidification. After presenting the general formulation, we compute some specific examples. In particular, we provide an example highlighting the fact that the extension of the groups truly depends on the class of the gerbe.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Picard group of the Baily-Borel compactification of orthogonal Shimura varieties. As a result, we determine the Picard group of the Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces. Interestingly, in contrast to the situation observed in the moduli space of curves, we find that the Picard group of the Baily-Borel compactification is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a certain affine algebraic surface over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that it admits a regular map to $\mathbb{A}^2/\mathbb{Q}$. We show that any non-trivial torsion line bundle in the relative Picard group $Pic^0\left(S/\mathbb{A}^2\right)$ can be pulled back to ideal classes of quadratic fields whose order can be made sufficiently large. This gives an affirmative answer to a question raised by Agboola and Pappas, in case of affine algebraic surfaces. For a closed point $P\in \mathbb{A}^2/\mathbb{Q}$, we show that the cardinality of a subgroup of the Picard group of the fiber $S_P$ remains unchanged when $P$ varies over a Zarisky open subset in $\mathbb{A}^2$. We also show by constructing an element of odd order $n\geq 3$ in the class group of certain imaginary quadratic fields that the Picard group of $S_P$ has a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{J}^d_g \to \mathscr{M}_g$ be the universal Picard stack parametrizing degree $d$ line bundles on genus $g$ curves, and let $\mathscr{J}^d_{2,g}$ be its restriction to locus of hyperelliptic curves $\mathscr{H}_{2,g} \subset \mathscr{M}_g$. We determine the rational Chow ring of $\mathscr{J}^d_{2,g}$ for all $d$ and $g$. In particular, we prove it is generated by restrictions of tautological classes on $\mathscr{J}^d_g$ and we determine all relations among the restrictions of such classes. We also compute the integral Picard group of $\mathscr{J}^d_{2,g}$, completing (and extending to the $\mathrm{PGL}_2$-equivariant case) prior work of Erman and Wood. As a corollary, we prove that $\mathscr{J}^d_{2,g}$ is either a trivial $\mathbb{G}_m$-gerbe over its rigidification, or has Brauer class of order $2$, depending on the parity of $d - g$.

Abstract:We prove that for any prime $p$ and height $n \ge 1$, the telescopic Picard group $\mathrm{Pic}(\mathrm{Sp}_{Tn})$ contains a subgroup of the form $\mathbb{Z}_p \times \mathbb{Z}/a_p(p^n-1)$, where $a_p = 1$ if $p = 2$ and $a_p = 2$ if $p$ is odd. Using Kummer theory, we obtain an $(\mathbb{F}_{p^n}^\times \rtimes \mathbb{Z}/n)$-Galois extension of $\mathbb{S}_{T(n)}$, obtaining the first example of a lift of a non-Abelian Galois extension of the $K(n)$-local sphere to the telescopic world, at arbitrary positive height and prime. Our proof proceeds by setting up a higher categorical framework for the periodicity theorem, utilizing the symmetries of this framework to construct Picard elements.

Abstract:Given a smooth scheme X with an action by an affine algebraic group G, we give a formula to compute the Nisnevich sheaf of the motivic connected components of the quotient stack [X/G] in the case of an orbifold. We apply it to identify all the $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected stacky curves and prove the $\mathbb{A}^1$ -connectedness of the moduli stack of elliptic curves. We also prove homotopy purity for the smooth algebraic stacks and recover a computation of the Picard group of stacky orbifold curves by computing their mixed motive.

Abstract:I demonstrate that, under certain circumstances, regions of negative energy density can undergo gravitational collapse into a black hole. The resultant exterior black hole spacetimes necessarily have negative mass and non-trivial topology. A full theory of quantum gravity, in which topology-changing processes take place, could give rise to such spacetimes.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of Higgs sheaves valued in line bundles and the associated Hitchin maps on surfaces. We first work out Picard groups of generic (very general) spectral varieties which holds for dimension of at least 2, i.e., a Noether--Lefschetz type theorem for spectral varieties. We then apply this to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the non-emptyness of generic Hitchin fibers for surfaces cases. Then we move on to detect the geometry of the moduli spaces of Higgs sheaves as the second Chern class varies.

Abstract:We attempt to develop a general algebro-geometric study of the moduli stack of commutative, 1-parameter formal Lie groups. We emphasize the pro-algebraic structure of this stack: it is the inverse limit, over varying n, of moduli stacks of n-buds, and these latter stacks are algebraic. Our main results pertain to aspects of the height stratification relative to fixed prime p on the stacks of buds and formal Lie groups. We conclude with a largely expository account of some foundational material on limits in bicategories.
