Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:We continue the analysis of the Modular Isomorphism Problem for $2$-generated $p$-groups with cyclic derived subgroup, $p>2$, started in [D. García-Lucas, Á. del Río, and M. Stanojkovski. On group invariants determined by modular group algebras: even versus odd characteristic. Algebr. Represent. Theory. <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10468-022-10182-x" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>, 2022]. We show that if $G$ belongs to this class of groups, then the isomorphism type of the quotients $G/(G')^{p^3}$ and $G/\gamma_3(G)^p$ are determined by its modular group algebra. In fact, we obtain a more general but technical result, expressed in terms of the classification \cite{OsnelDiegoAngel}. We also show that for groups in this class of order at most $p^{11}$, the Modular Isomorphism Problem has positive answer. Finally, we describe some families of groups of order $p^{12}$ whose group algebras over the field with $p$ elements cannot be distinguished with the techniques available to us.

Abstract:The purpose of this note is to find explicit representatives in deRham cohomology for the generators of the cohomology of the moduli space of parabolic bundles, analogous to the results of \cite{groupcoho} for the moduli space of vector bundles. Further we use the explicit generators to compute the intersection pairing of its cohomology.

A class number formula for Picard modular surfaces

Abstract:We investigate arithmetic aspects of the middle degree cohomology of compactified Picard modular surfaces $X$ attached to the unitary similitude group $\mathrm{GU}(2,1)$ for an imaginary quadratic extension $E/\mathbf{Q}$. We construct new Beilinson--Flach classes on $X$ and compute their Archimedean regulator. We obtain a special value formula involving a non-critical $L$-value of the degree six standard $L$-function, a Whittaker period, and the regulator. This provides evidence for Beilinson's conjecture in this setting.

Abstract:We determine explicit generators for the ring of modular forms associated with the moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with automorphism group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ and of Picard rank 13 and higher. The K3 surfaces in question carry a canonical Jacobian elliptic fibration and the modular form generators appear as coefficients in the Weierstrass-type equations describing these fibrations.

Abstract:We compute the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order two, and of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order three, over any base scheme on which 6 is invertible. This generalizes a result of Fulton-Olsson, who computed the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves (with no level structure) over a wide variety of base schemes.

Abstract:Nous calculons le groupe de Picard de l'espace des modules $\Theta_{\planp}(d)$ des th\^eta-caract\'eristiques des courbes planes (non forc\'ement lisses) de degr\'e $d$. Nous montrons que pour $d\ge 6$, le groupe de Picard de la composante paire est engendr\'e par le fibr\'e d\'eterminant ${\cal{D}}$ et l'image r\'eciproque ${\cal{L}}$, sous le morphisme support sch\'ematique, de ${\cal{O}}_{\proj}(1)$ o\`u $\proj$ est l'espace des courbes de degr\'e $d$ sur $\planp$. Pour $1\le d \le 4$, ce groupe est engendr\'e uniquement par ${\cal{L}}$, le fibr\'e d\'eterminant \'etant trivial dans ces cas. Dans le groupe $\Cl$ des diviseurs de Weil, le fibr\'e d\'eterminant admet une racine: le fibr\'e pfaffien ${\cal{P}}$. De plus, pour $d\geq 4$ pair, ${\cal{L}}$ aussi admet une racine dans $\Cl$. Si $d=5$, le fibr\'e pfaffien s'\'etend en un fibr\'e inversible et le groupe de Picard est engendr\'e par ${\cal{L}}$ et ${\cal{P}}$. On verra ainsi que la composante paire de $\Theta_{\planp}(d)$ est localement factoriel si et seulement si $d=1,2,3$ ou $d=5$. On obtient un r\'esultat analogue pour la composante impaire. Ensuite, nous \'etudions la question d'existence d'une famille universelle sur un ouvert de l'ouvert $U$ des th\^eta-caract\'eristiques dont le faisceau sous-jacent est stable. Nous montrons que pour $d$ pair une telle famille ne peut exister, tandis que pour $d$ impair une telle famille existe, pas sur $U$ entier, mais localement dans la topologie de Zariski.

Abstract:Let Fp be the prime field of order p > 0 and G be an elementary abelian p -group. For some n -dimensional cohyperplane G -representations V over Fp , we show that Fp[V⊕V*]G , the invariant ring of a vector and a covector is a complete intersection by exhibiting an explicit generating set (in fact, a SAGBI basis) and exposing all relations among the generators.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a certain affine algebraic surface over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that it admits a regular map to $\mathbb{A}^2/\mathbb{Q}$. We show that any non-trivial torsion line bundle in the relative Picard group $Pic^0\left(S/\mathbb{A}^2\right)$ can be pulled back to ideal classes of quadratic fields whose order can be made sufficiently large. This gives an affirmative answer to a question raised by Agboola and Pappas, in case of affine algebraic surfaces. For a closed point $P\in \mathbb{A}^2/\mathbb{Q}$, we show that the cardinality of a subgroup of the Picard group of the fiber $S_P$ remains unchanged when $P$ varies over a Zarisky open subset in $\mathbb{A}^2$. We also show by constructing an element of odd order $n\geq 3$ in the class group of certain imaginary quadratic fields that the Picard group of $S_P$ has a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:We describe the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) for a cyclic group when $p|N$ by factoring $x^N-1$ over finite fields and constructing the Fourier transform and its inverse using Bézout's identity for polynomials. For the symmetric group, in the modular case when $p|n!$ we construct the Peirce decomposition using central primitive orthogonal idempotents, yielding a change-of-basis matrix which generalizes the DFT. We compute the unitary DFT for the symmetric group over number fields containing sufficiently many square roots. For $n=3$, we compute the Galois group of the splitting field of the characteristic polynomial. All constructions are implemented in SageMath.

Abstract:We obtain lower bounds for the dimension of fixed loci of abelian $p$-groups acting on smooth projective varieties. Those arise from modulo p Chern numbers, and are shown to be optimal. The bounds are expressed in a natural way by introducing an appropriate filtration on the modulo $p$ cobordism ring. They are obtained using equivariant localization methods, via the concentration theorem, and by a technique of "partition dividing".

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different from 2 and residual characteristic $p$. This paper concerns the $\ell$-modular representations of a connected reductive group $G$ distinguished by a Galois involution, with $\ell$ an odd prime different from $p$. We start by proving a general theorem allowing to lift supercuspidal $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ distinguished by an arbitrary closed subgroup $H$ to a distinguished supercuspidal $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$-representation. Given a quadratic field extension $E/F$ and an irreducible $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n(E)$, we verify the Jacquet conjecture in the modular setting that if the Langlands parameter $\phi_\pi$ is irreducible and conjugate-self-dual, then $\pi$ is either $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$-distinguished or $(\mathrm{GL}_n(F),\omega_{E/F})$-distinguished (where $\omega_{E/F}$ is the quadratic character of $F^\times$ associated to the quadratic field extension $E/F$ by the local class field theory), but not both, which extends one result of Sécherre to the case $p=2$. We give another application of our lifting theorem for supercuspidal representations distinguished by a unitary involution, extending one result of Zou to $p=2$.

Modularity of d-elliptic loci with level structure

Abstract:We consider the generating series of special cycles on $\mathcal{A}_1(N)\times \mathcal{A}_g(N)$, with full level $N$ structure, valued in the cohomology of degree $2g$. The modularity theorem of Kudla-Millson for locally symmetric spaces implies that these series are modular. When $N=1$, the images of these loci in $\mathcal{A}_g$ are the $d$-elliptic Noether-Lefschetz loci, which are conjectured to be modular. In the appendix, it is shown that the resulting modular forms are nonzero for $g=2$ when $N\geq 11$ and $N\neq 12$.
