Abstract:Let S be a smooth, projective surface of Picard rank 1 and very ample generator embedding S into P^n. Let C be a smooth curve in O(m) for m \geq 5. We prove that any base-point free, complete g^r_d on C for r\in\{1,2\} and d small enough is cut out by a hyperplane section restricted to a multisecant (n-r-1)-plane.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is whether certain linear systems on a smooth curve \(C\) can be represented by hyperplane sections restricted to multi - secant \((n - r - 1)\)-planes under specific conditions. Specifically, let \(S\) be a smooth projective surface with Picard group rank 1 and very ample generator embedded in \(\mathbb{P}^n\), and \(C\in|O_S(m)|\) be a smooth curve on \(S\), where \(m\geq5\). The goal of the paper is to prove that for any base - point - free complete linear system \(g^r_d\) (where \(r\in\{1, 2\}\) and \(d\) is small enough), this linear system is obtained by restricting some hyperplane section to the multi - secant \((n - r - 1)\)-plane on \(C\). This problem has been studied in previous literature, especially in the case of \(C\subseteq\mathbb{P}^3\). For example, in [3], it was proved that when \(C\) lies on a surface in \(\mathbb{P}^3\) with degree greater than 4, the plane section system is the unique \(g^3_{\deg(C)}\). In [1], it was proved that when \(C\) is a smooth complete intersection curve in \(\mathbb{P}^3\), any pencil computing the diagonal is given by the plane section minus the multi - secant of the maximum degree. In addition, Hartshorne and Schlesinger in [4] proved that the diagonal of a general ACM curve in \(\mathbb{P}^3\) is also computed by multi - secants. This paper attempts to generalize these results to the case where \(C\) lies on a smooth projective surface \(S\) with Picard group rank 1 and very ample generator. The author studies not only \(g^1_d\) of non - minimal degree, but also \(g^2_d\). The method used is borrowed from [4, Proposition 5.5]. The main idea is to construct a map from \(O_S(1)\) to \(g^r_d\) on \(C\) and ensure the surjectivity of this map on global sections.
