Abstract:Abstract The first published non-trivial examples of algebraic surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number are due to Persson, who constructed surfaces with maximal Picard number on the Noether line $K^{2}=2\chi -6$ for every admissible pair $(K^{2},\chi )$ such that $\chi \not \equiv 0 \ \text {mod}\ 6$. In this note, given a non-negative integer $k$, algebraic surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number lying on the line $K^{2}=2\chi -6+k$ are constructed for every admissible pair $(K^{2},\chi )$ such that $\chi \geq 2k+10$. These constructions, obtained as bidouble covers of rational surfaces, not only allow to fill in Persson’s gap on the Noether line, but also provide infinitely many new examples of algebraic surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number above the Noether line.

Abstract:Examples of algebraic surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number are not abundant in the literature. Moreover, most known examples either possess low invariants, lie near the Noether line $K^2=2\chi-6$ or are somewhat scattered. A notable exception is Persson's sequence of double covers of the projective plane with maximal Picard number, whose invariants converge to the Severi line $K^2=4\chi$. This note is devoted to the construction of infinitely many new sequences of surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number whose invariants converge to the Severi line.

Abstract:This paper deals with superminimal surfaces in complex space forms by using theFrenet framing. We formulate explicitly the length squares of the higher fundamental forms andthe higher curvatures for superminimal surfaces in terms of the metric of the surface and the Khlerangle of the immersion. Particularly, some curvature pinching theorems for minimal 2-spheres in acomplex projective space are given and a new characterization of the Veronese sequence is obtained.

Abstract:We give a systematic construction of uniruled surfaces in positive characteristic. Using this construction, we find surfaces of general type with non-trivial vector fields, surfaces with arbitrarily non-reduced Picard schemes as well as surfaces with inseparable canonical maps. In particular, we show that some previously known pathologies are not sporadic but exist in abundance.

Abstract:Let X be a complex algebraic K3 surface of degree 2 d and with Picard number . Assume that X admits two commuting involutions: one holomorphic and one anti-holomorphic. Molecular Realism in Default Models for Information Theories of Hydrophobic Effects

Abstract:This letter considers several physical arguments about contributions to hydrophobic hydration of inert gases, constructs default models to test them within information theories, and gives information theory predictions using those default models with moment information drawn from simulation of liquid water. Tested physical features include: packing or steric effects, the role of attractive forces that lower the solvent pressure, and the roughly tetrahedral coordination of water molecules in liquid water. Packing effects (hard sphere default model) and packing effects plus attractive forces (Lennard-Jones default model) are ineffective in improving the prediction of hydrophobic hydration free energies of inert gases over the previously used Gibbs and flat default models. However, a conceptually simple cluster Poisson model that incorporates tetrahedral coordination structure in the default model is one of the better performers for these predictions. These results provide a partial rationalization of the remarkable performance of the flat default model with two moments in previous applications. The cluster Poisson default model thus will be the subject of further refinement.

Abstract:In this article, we shall use the construction of Hirzebruch, Hofer, Kato, and Deligne-Mostow on compact complex 2-ball quotients to construct further finite Galois coverings over them, and by the analytical result of [M-S] and [Z], these coverings will admit Kahler metrics which are quasi-negatively curved, or negatively curved when the branching locus is smooth.

Abstract:In this article, we study the existence of new and general type meromorphic $1$-forms on curves through explicit construction. Specifically, we have constructed a large family of new and general type meromorphic $1$-forms on $\mathbb{P}^1,$ elliptic and hyperelliptic curves. We also established a connection to the Hurwitz realization problem of branch cover for the Riemann Sphere, which provides an algorithm to determine whether a $1$-form on $\mathbb{P}^1$ (of some restricted class) is new or old.

Abstract:Suppose X is a smooth projective 3-fold of general type and |mK_X| is composed of a pencil of surfaces with m>1. This pencil naturally induces a fibration f:X->C onto a smooth curve C after the Stein-factorization, which is the main objects of this article. Based on Koll'ar's earlier works, we improve on it and try to understand the family in terms of discrete birational invariants of the total space as well as those of the general fiber and the base curve. The aim of this note is to build a little bit basic facts.

Abstract:We study relatively minimal surfaces equipped with a strongly isotrivial elliptic fibration in positive characteristic by means of the notion of equivariantly normal curves introduced and developed recently by Brion. Such surfaces are isomorphic to a contracted product $E\times^G X$, where $E$ is an elliptic curve, $G$ is a finite subgroup scheme of $E$ and $X$ is a $G$-normal curve. Using this description, we compute their Betti numbers to determine their birational classes. This allow us to complete the classification of maximal automorphism groups of surfaces in any characteristic. When $G$ is diagonalizable, we compute additional invariants to study the structure of their Picard schemes.

Abstract:We prove that every K3 surface with automorphism group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ admits an explicit birational model as a double sextic surface. This model is canonical for Picard number greater than 10. For Picard number greater than 9, the K3 surfaces in question possess a second birational model, in the form of a projective quartic hypersurface, generalizing the Inose quartic.

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.
