Abstract:Let f be a polynomial endomorphism of degree d>1 of C^k (k>1) which extends to a holomorphic endomorphism of P^k. Assume that the maximal order Julia set of f is laminated by real hypersurfaces in some open set. We show that f is homogenous and is a polynomial lift of a Lattes endomorphism of P^{k-1}.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with realizing Lattes maps as subdivision maps of finite subdivision rules. The main result is that the Lattes maps in all but finitely many analytic conjugacy classes can be realized as subdivision maps of finite subdivision rules with one tile type. An example is given of a Lattes map which is not the subdivision map of a finite subdivision rule with either i) two tile types and 1-skeleton of the subdivision complex a circle or ii) one tile type.

Abstract:In this work, we determine all Lattes maps which are Belyi morphisms. It turns out that in the generic case, i.e. when the automorphism group is $\ZZ/2\ZZ$, the corresponding family of Lattes maps are Belyi morphisms if and only if the isogeny is multiplication by two. This family form a continuous family of Belyi maps. Elliptic curves with complex multiplication also determine a family over $\ZZ$ of Belyi morphisms. We give the explicit formulas for the first few Belyi morphisms when the curve has complex multiplication by 3rd root of unity.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.
The Star Formation History of the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy UGCA 290

Abstract:We present the star formation history of UGCA 290, a galaxy with properties intermediate between Blue Compact Dwarfs and Dwarf Irregulars. This galaxy is particularly interesting because its young stellar population is extremely similar to that of the well-studied type iE Blue Compact Dwarf VII Zw 403, despite its different spatial morphology and old stellar content. Our Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 single-star photometry for UGCA 290 extends over nine magnitudes in I, and allows a detailed study of its star formation history. Using synthetic color-magnitude diagrams, we show that the recent "burst" which gives this galaxy its BCD status is a moderate enhancement in star formation which lasted for approximately 20 Myr, at a rate about ten times above its previous rate. The star formation history for most of the previous billion years is consistent with a constant rate, although enhancements as large as the current one are possible at times ealier than 400 Myr ago. We estimate that the total mass converted into stars in UGCA 290 more than one billion years ago is about three times the astrated mass since that time. The initial mass function is consistent with a Salpeter slope, and the stellar metallicity is bracketed by Z_sun/50 and Z_sun/5, with evidence for metallicity evolution. Similar results for the star formation history over the past 600 Myr apply to VII Zw 403. Our main result is that despite the traditional picture of BCDs, the current bursts in these two galaxies are neither remarkably intense nor short-lived, and that most of their star formation occured more than a billion years ago.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over $\mathbb{C}$ with Weyl group $W$. Following a suggestion of Bezrukavnikov, we define a map from two-sided cells to conjugacy classes in $W$ using the geometry of the affine flag variety. This is an affine analog of the classical story of two-sided cells of $W$, special nilpotent orbits and special representations of $W$. The proof involves studying Springer representations appearing in the cohomology of affine Springer fibers. This relies on tools developed by Yun in his papers on Global Springer theory. Our result provides evidence for a conjecture of Lusztig on strata in a connected reductive group.

Abstract:Let $ F_{q}^{(n)} $ denote the n-dimensional row vector space over the finite field $ F_{q} $ with $ n \ge 2 $. An l-partial injective linear map of $ F_{q} $ is a pair $ (V,F) $, where $ V $ is an l-dimensional subspace of $ F_{q}^{(n)} $ and $ f{:}\,V \to F_{q}^{(n)} $ is an injective linear map. Let L be the set of all partial injective linear maps of $ F_{q}^{(n)} $ containing 1. Ordered L by ordinary and reverse inclusion, two families of finite posets are obtained. This paper proves that these posets are lattices, discusses their geometricity and computes their characteristic polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper we study properties of endomorphisms of $\p^k$ using a symmetric product construction $(\p^1)^k/\mathfrak{S}_k \cong \p^k$. Symmetric products have been used to produce examples of endomorphisms of $\p^k$ with certain characteristics, $k\geq2$. In the present note, we discuss the use of these maps to enlighten stability phenomena in parameter spaces. In particular, we study $k$-deep post-critically finite maps and characterize families of Lattès maps.

Abstract:In these lectures, we give the proofs of two basic theorems on surface topology, namely, the work of Dehn and Lickorish on generating the mapping class group of a surface by Dehn-twists; and the work of Dehn and Nielsen on relating self-homeomorphisms of a surface and automorphisms of the fundamental group of the surface. Some of the basic materials on hyperbolic geometry and large scale geometry are introduced.

Abstract:We observe that Hall's free projective extension $P \mapsto F(P)$ of partial planes is a Borel map, and use a modification of the construction introduced in [9] to conclude that the class of countable non-Desarguesian projective planes is Borel complete. In the process, we also rediscover the main result of [7] on the realizability of every group as the group of collineations of some projective plane. Finally, we use classical results of projective geometry to prove that the class of countable Pappian projective planes is Borel complete.

Abstract:We show the existence of $S^1\times C_p$-maps between certain representation spheres. As an application, we show that, in the family of abelian compact Lie groups, a group $G$ has the weak Borsuk-Ulam property (in the sense of Bartsch) if and only if $G$ is either a finite abelian $p$-group or a $k$-torus.

Abstract:We consider commuting pairs of holomorphic endomorphisms of P^2 with disjoint sequence of iterates. The remaining case to be studied is when their degrees coincide after some number of iterations. We show in this case that they are either commuting Lattès maps or commuting homogeneous polynomial maps of C^2 inducing a Lattès map on the hyperplane at infinity.
