Abstract:Turing Award winner Juris Hartmanis introduced in 1959 lattices of subspaces of generalized partitions ("partitions of type n"; "geometries" if $n = 2$). Hartmanis states it is "an unsolved problem whether there are any incomplete lattice homomorphisms in" lattices of subspaces of geometries. (He continues, "[I]f so how can these geometries be characterized.") We give a positive answer to this question.

Abstract:These are notes on the impact of Lagrange's memoir on the construction of geographical maps. We mention the relations of some ideas and questions introduced in this memoir with other notions that appeared later in the works of several mathematicians, including in particular Chebyshev (19th c.) and Darboux (19th-20th c.), two mathematicians who were particularly interested in geography.

Abstract:We consider the mathematical theory of geographical maps, with an emphasis on the eighteenth century works of Euler, Lagrange and Delisle. This period is characterized by the frequent use of maps that are no more obtained by the stereographic projection or its variations, but by much more general maps from the sphere to the plane. More especially, the characteristics of the desired geographical maps were formulated in terms of an appropriate choice of the images of the parallels and meridians, and the mathematical properties required by the map concern the distortion of the maps restricted to these lines. The paper also contains some notes on the general use of mathematical methods in cartography in Greek Antiquity and in the modern period, and on the mutual influence of the two fields, mathematics and geography. The final version of this paper will appear in Ganita Bharati (Indian mathematics).

Abstract:This paper is concerned with realizing Lattes maps as subdivision maps of finite subdivision rules. The main result is that the Lattes maps in all but finitely many analytic conjugacy classes can be realized as subdivision maps of finite subdivision rules with one tile type. An example is given of a Lattes map which is not the subdivision map of a finite subdivision rule with either i) two tile types and 1-skeleton of the subdivision complex a circle or ii) one tile type.

Abstract:We publish a letter from Lebesgue to Cartan and a letter from Montel to Cartan, dated 1933--1934, about Gaston Julia, Paul Montel, and an election at the Paris Academy of Sciences. We discuss the context and the mathematics. The two letters have been discovered between the publication of the book "Fatou, Julia, Montel, le Grand prix des sciences mathématiques de 1918 et après" (Springer 2009) and the publication of the English translation (Springer 2011). They have been included in the translation. This paper is dedicated to the readers of the French version.

Abstract:The origin of quasiconformal mappings, like that of conformal mappings, can be traced back to old cartography where the basic problem was the search for mappings from the sphere onto the plane with minimal deviation from conformality, subject to certain conditions which were made precise. In this paper, we survey the development of cartography, highlighting the main ideas that are related to quasiconformality. Some of these ideas were completely ignored in the previous historical surveys on quasiconformal mappings. We then survey early quasiconformal theory in the works of Grötzsch, Lavrentieff, Ahlfors and Teichmüller, which are the 20th-century founders of the theory. The period we consider starts with Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100--170 A.D.) and ends with Oswald Teichmüller (1913--1943). We mention the works of several mathematicians-geographers done in this period, including Euler, Lagrange, Lambert, Gauss, Chebyshev, Darboux and others. We highlight in particular the work of Nicolas-Auguste Tissot (1824--1897), a French mathematician and geographer who (according to our knowledge) was the first to introduce the notion of a mapping which transforms infinitesimal circles into infinitesimal ellipses, studying parameters such as the ratio of the major to the minor axes of such an infinitesimal ellipse, its area divided by the area of the infinitesimal circle of which it is the image, and the inclination of its axis with respect to a fixed axis in the plane. We also give some information about the lives and works of Grötzsch, Lavrentieff, Ahlfors and Teichmüller. The latter brought the theory of quasiconformal mappings to a high level of development. He used it in an essential way in his investigations of Riemann surfaces and their moduli and in function theory (in particular, in his work on the Bieberbach conjecture and the type problem). We survey in detail several of his results. We also discuss some aspects of his life and writings, explaining why his papers were not read and why some of his ideas are still unknown even to Teichmüller theorists. On Lurie's theorem and applications

Abstract:Lurie's theorem states that there exists a sheaf of ring spectra on the site of formally étale Deligne--Mumford stacks over the moduli stack of $p$-divisible groups of height $n$, which agrees with the classical Landweber exact functor theorem (LEFT) on affines. In other words, this theorem is a global, higher categorical refinement of the LEFT. In recent work, Lurie has introduced many of the ingredients one needs to prove this theorem, and in this article, we gather these ingredients together and prove Lurie's theorem. Applications of this theorem to Lubin--Tate theories, topological modular and automorphism forms, and Adams operations are also discussed.

Modular lattices of finite length (Part A)

Abstract:This is Part A of four Parts dedicated to modular lattices of finite length. It builds on 1992 notes of the author (available on ResearchGate), and in so doing heeds a wish of the late Gian-Carlo Rota. Part A is in fairly final form and mainly features known material, exceptions being a short proof of the distributivity of congruence lattices of lattices, as well as the concept of a point-splitting (which applies to arbitrary partial linear spaces). The planned content of Parts B,C,D is given in the introduction of Part A. Abstract:Invented by Kurt Hensel at the very end of 19th century on the model of power series in one indeterminate, the $p$-adic numbers have not only become an indispensable tool of contemporary arithmetic, but a research topic per se. In this text, stemming out two talks at the 2023 X-UPS lectures, I shall explain their construction, how they fit in a vaster framework, between analysis and arithmetic, where two constructions bearing the name of Isaac Newton play a central role : Newton's method and Newton's polygon. Inventés par Kurt Hensel à la toute fin du 19e siècle sur le modèle des séries formelles en une indéterminée, les nombres $p$-adiques sont devenus non seulement un outil indispensable de l'arithmétique contemporaine, mais un sujet d'étude en soi. Dans ce texte, issu de deux exposés aux journées X-UPS 2023, j'expliquerai leur construction, comment ils s'insèrent dans un cadre plus vaste, entre analyse et arithmétique, où deux constructions portant le nom d'Isaac Newton jouent un rôle central: la méthode de Newton et la notion de polygone de Newton.

Abstract:In this work, we determine all Lattes maps which are Belyi morphisms. It turns out that in the generic case, i.e. when the automorphism group is $\ZZ/2\ZZ$, the corresponding family of Lattes maps are Belyi morphisms if and only if the isogeny is multiplication by two. This family form a continuous family of Belyi maps. Elliptic curves with complex multiplication also determine a family over $\ZZ$ of Belyi morphisms. We give the explicit formulas for the first few Belyi morphisms when the curve has complex multiplication by 3rd root of unity.

Abstract:Metric measure spaces with synthetic Ricci bounds have attracted great interest in recent years, accompanied by spectacular breakthroughs and deep new insights. In this survey, I will provide a brief introduction to the concept of lower Ricci bounds as introduced by Lott-Villani and myself, and illustrate some of its geometric, analytic and probabilistic consequences, among them Li-Yau estimates, coupling properties for Brownian motions, sharp functional and isoperimetric inequalities, rigidity results, and structural properties like rectifiability and rectifiability of the boundary. In particular, I will explain its crucial interplay with the heat flow and its link to the curvaturedimension condition formulated in functional-analytic terms by Bakry-Èmery. This equivalence between the Lagrangian and the Eulerian approach then will be further explored in various recent research directions: i) time-dependent Ricci bounds which provide a link to (super-) Ricci flows for singular spaces, ii) second order calculus, upper Ricci bounds, and transformation formulas, iii) distribution-valued Ricci bounds which e.g. allow singular effects of non-convex boundaries to be taken into account.
