Abstract:For a Lattès map $\phi:\mathbb P^1 \to \mathbb P^1$ defined over a number field $K$, we prove a conjecture on the integrality of points in the backward orbit of $P\in \mathbb P^1(\overline K)$ under $\phi$.

Abstract:We prove several results on backward orbits of rational functions over number fields. First, we show that if $K$ is a number field, $\phi\in K(x)$ and $\alpha\in K$ then the extension of $K$ generated by the abelian points in the backward orbit of $\alpha$ is ramified only at finitely many primes. This has the immediate strong consequence that if all points in the backward orbit of $\alpha$ are abelian then $\phi$ is post-critically finite. We use this result to prove two facts: on the one hand, if $\phi\in \mathbb Q(x)$ is a quadratic rational function not conjugate over $\mathbb Q^{\text{ab}}$ to a power or a Chebyshev map and all preimages of $\alpha$ are abelian, we show that $\phi$ is $\mathbb Q$-conjugate to one of two specific quadratic functions, in the spirit of a recent conjecture of Andrews and Petsche. On the other hand we provide conditions on a quadratic rational function in $K(x)$ for the backward orbit of a point $\alpha$ to only contain finitely many cyclotomic preimages, extending previous results of the second author. Finally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a triple $(\phi,K,\alpha)$, where $\phi$ is a Lattès map over a number field $K$ and $\alpha\in K$ for the whole backward orbit of $\alpha$ to only contain abelian points.

$S$-Integral Points in Orbits on $\mathbb{P}^1$

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a finite set of places of $K$ that contains all of the archimedean places. Let $\varphi: \mathbb{P}^1 \to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a rational map of degree $d \geq 2$ defined over $K$. Given $\alpha \in \mathbb{P}^1(K)$ non-preperiodic and $\beta \in \mathbb{P}^1(K)$ non-exceptional, we prove an upper bound of the form $O(|S|^{1+\epsilon})$ on the number of points in the forward orbit of $\alpha$ that are $S$-integral relative to $\beta$, extending results of Hsia--Silverman [HS11]. When $\varphi$ is a power or Lattès map, we obtain a stronger upper bound of the form $O(|S|)$. We also prove uniform bounds when $\varphi$ is a polynomial, extending results of Krieger et al [KLS+15].

Mirror Symmetry for Special Nilpotent Orbit Closures

Abstract:Motivated by geometric Langlands, we initiate a program to study the mirror symmetry between nilpotent orbit closures of a semisimple Lie algebra and those of its Langlands dual. The most interesting case is $B_n$ via $C_n$. Classically, there is a famous Springer duality between special orbits. Therefore, it is natural to speculate that the mirror symmetry we seek may coincide with Springer duality in the context of special orbits. Unfortunately, such a naive statement fails. To remedy the situation, we propose a conjecture which asserts the mirror symmetry for certain parabolic/induced covers of special orbits. Then, we prove the conjecture for Richardson orbits and obtain certain partial results in general. In the process, we reveal some very interesting and yet subtle structures of these finite covers, which are related to Lusztig's canonical quotients of special nilpotent orbits. For example, there is a mysterious asymmetry in the footprint or range of degrees of these finite covers. Finally, we provide two examples to show that the mirror symmetry fails outside the footprint.
On Non-Uniformly Discrete Orbits

Abstract:We study the property of uniform discreteness within discrete orbits of non-uniform lattices in $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$, acting on $\mathbb{R}^2$ by linear transformations. We provide quantitative consequences of previous results by using Diophantine properties. We give a partial result toward a conjecture of Lelièvre regarding the set of long cylinder holonomy vectors of the "golden L" translation surface: for any $\epsilon>0$, three points of this set can be found on a horizontal line within a distance of $\epsilon$ of each other.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2011.06562" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.06562">arXiv:2011.06562</a>, the first author and Otto van Koert proved a generalized version of the classical Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem, for Liouville domains of any dimension. In this article, we prove a relative version for Lagrangians with Legendrian boundary. This gives interior chords of arbitrary large length, provided the twist condition introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2011.06562" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.06562">arXiv:2011.06562</a> is satisfied. The motivation comes from finding spatial consecutive collision orbits of arbitrary large length in the spatial circular restricted three-body problem, which are relevant for gravitational assist in the context of orbital mechanics. This is an application of a local version of wrapped Floer homology, which we introduce as the open string analogue of local Floer homology for closed strings.

Abstract:We show that set of points nondense under the × n-map on the circle and dense for the geodesic flow under the induced map on the circle corresponding to the expanding horospherical subgroup has full Haudorff dimension. We also show the analogous result for toral automorphisms on the 2-torus and a diagonal flow. Our results can be interpreted in number-theoretic terms: the set of well approximable numbers that are nondense under the × n-map has full Hausdorff dimension. Similarly, the set of well approximable 2-vectors that are nondense under a hyperbolic toral automorphism has full Hausdorff dimension. Our result for numbers is the counterpart to a classical result of Kaufmann and gives a comprehensive understanding.
A new construction of counterexamples to the bounded orbit conjecture

Abstract:The bounded orbit conjecture says that every homeomorphism on the plane with each of its orbits being bounded must have a fixed point. Brouwer's translation theorem asserts that the conjecture is true for orientation preserving homeomorphisms, but Boyles' counterexample shows that it is false for the orientation reversing case. In this paper, we give a more comprehensible construction of counterexamples to the conjecture. Roughly speaking, we construct an orientation reversing homeomorphisms $f$ on the square $J^2=[-1, 1]^2$ with $\omega(x, f)=\{(-1. 1), (1, 1)\}$ and $\alpha(x, f)=\{(-1. -1), (1, -1)\}$ for each $x\in (-1, 1)^2$. Then by a semi-conjugacy defined by pushing an appropriate part of $\partial J^2$ into $(-1, 1)^2$, $f$ induces a homeomorphism on the plane, which is a counterexample.

Hecke orbits and the Mordell-Lang conjecture in distinguished categories

Abstract:Inspired by recent work of Aslanyan and Daw, we introduce the notion of $\Sigma$-orbits in the general framework of distinguished categories. In the setting of connected Shimura varieties, this concept contains many instances of (generalized) Hecke orbits from the literature. In the setting of semiabelian varieties, a $\Sigma$-orbit is a subgroup of finite rank. We show that our $\Sigma$-orbits have useful functorial properties and we use them to formulate two general statements of Mordell-Lang type (a weak one and an apparently stronger one). We prove an analogue of a recent theorem of Aslanyan and Daw in this general setting, which we apply to deduce an unconditional result about unlikely intersections in a fibered power of the Legendre family.

A bijection for tuples of commuting permutations and a log-concavity conjecture

Abstract:Let $A(\ell,n,k)$ denote the number of $\ell$-tuples of commuting permutations of $n$ elements whose permutation action results in exactly $k$ orbits or connected components. We provide a new proof of an explicit formula for $A(\ell,n,k)$ which is essentially due to Bryan and Fulman, in their work on orbifold higher equivariant Euler characteristics. Our proof is self-contained, elementary, and relies on the construction of an explicit bijection, in order to perform the $\ell+1\rightarrow \ell$ reduction. We also investigate a conjecture by the first author, regarding the log-concavity of $A(\ell,n,k)$ with respect to $k$. The conjecture generalizes a previous one by Heim and Neuhauser related to the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula.

Abstract:Let f be a polynomial endomorphism of degree d>1 of C^k (k>1) which extends to a holomorphic endomorphism of P^k. Towards Strong Reverse Minkowski-type Inequalities for Lattices

Abstract:We present a natural reverse Minkowski-type inequality for lattices, which gives upper bounds on the number of lattice points in a Euclidean ball in terms of sublattice determinants, and conjecture its optimal form. The conjecture exhibits a surprising wealth of connections to various areas in mathematics and computer science, including a conjecture motivated by integer programming by Kannan and Lovász (Annals of Math. 1988), a question from additive combinatorics asked by Green, a question on Brownian motions asked by Saloff-Coste (Colloq. Math. 2010), a theorem by Milman and Pisier from convex geometry (Ann. Probab. 1987), worst-case to average-case reductions in lattice-based cryptography, and more. We present these connections, provide evidence for the conjecture, and discuss possible approaches towards a proof. Our main technical contribution is in proving that our conjecture implies the $\ell_2$ case of the Kannan and Lovász conjecture. The proof relies on a novel convex relaxation for the covering radius, and a rounding procedure for based on "uncrossing" lattice subspaces.

Key and Lascoux polynomials for symmetric orbit closures

Abstract:We introduce shifted analogues of key polynomials related to symplectic and orthogonal orbit closures in the complete flag variety. Our definitions are given by applying isobaric divided difference operators to the analogues of Schubert polynomials for orbit closures that correspond to dominant involutions. We show that our shifted key polynomials are linear combinations of key polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients. We also prove that they are partial versions of the classical Schur $P$- and $Q$-polynomials. Finally, we examine $K$-theoretic generalizations of these functions, which give shifted forms of Lascoux polynomials. In the symplectic case, these generalizations are partial versions of the $GP$-polynomials introduced by Ikeda and Naruse. Besides developing basic properties, we identify a number of conjectures and open problems.

Prime orbit theorems for expanding Thurston maps: Lattès maps and split Ruelle operators

Abstract:We obtain an analog of the prime number theorem for a class of branched covering maps on the $2$-sphere $S^2$ called expanding Thurston maps, which are topological models of some non-uniformly expanding rational maps without any smoothness or holomorphicity assumption. More precisely, we show that the number of primitive periodic orbits, ordered by a weight on each point induced by a non-constant (eventually) positive real-valued Hölder continuous function on $S^2$ satisfying some additional regularity conditions, is asymptotically the same as the well-known logarithmic integral, with an exponential error term. In particular, our results apply to postcritically-finite rational maps for which the Julia set is the whole Riemann sphere. Moreover, a stronger result is obtained for Lattès maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we study orbit counting problems for inner functions using geodesic and horocyclic flows on Riemann surface laminations. For a one component inner function of finite Lyapunov exponent with $F(0) = 0$, other than $z \to z^d$, we show that the number of pre-images of a point $z \in \mathbb{D} \setminus \{ 0\}$ that lie in a ball of hyperbolic radius $R$ centered at the origin satisfies $$ \mathcal{N}(z, R) \, \sim \, \frac{1}{2} \log \frac{1}{|z|} \cdot \frac{1}{\int_{\partial \mathbb{D}} \log |F'| dm}, \quad \text{as }R \to \infty. $$ For a general inner function of finite Lyapunov exponent, we show that the above formula holds up to a Cesàro average. Our main insight is that iteration along almost every inverse orbit is asymptotically linear. We also prove analogues of these results for parabolic inner functions of infinite height.
