Mirror Symmetry for Special Nilpotent Orbit Closures

Abstract:Motivated by geometric Langlands, we initiate a program to study the mirror symmetry between nilpotent orbit closures of a semisimple Lie algebra and those of its Langlands dual. The most interesting case is $B_n$ via $C_n$. Classically, there is a famous Springer duality between special orbits. Therefore, it is natural to speculate that the mirror symmetry we seek may coincide with Springer duality in the context of special orbits. Unfortunately, such a naive statement fails. To remedy the situation, we propose a conjecture which asserts the mirror symmetry for certain parabolic/induced covers of special orbits. Then, we prove the conjecture for Richardson orbits and obtain certain partial results in general. In the process, we reveal some very interesting and yet subtle structures of these finite covers, which are related to Lusztig's canonical quotients of special nilpotent orbits. For example, there is a mysterious asymmetry in the footprint or range of degrees of these finite covers. Finally, we provide two examples to show that the mirror symmetry fails outside the footprint.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed two important new developments in the study of linear series on algebraic varieties. First, vector bundles have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing linear series on curves and surfaces. More recently, the viewpoints and techniques of higher dimensional geometry have started to play a central role. The purpose of these lectures is to provide a down-to-earth introduction to some of these new ideas and methods. The present notes, written with the assistance of G. Fernandez del Busto, are a considerably expanded version of a course given at the 1993 Regional Geometry Institute on Higher Dimensional Complex Geometry at Park City, Utah. While I hope they may be of interest to any geometers wishing to learn about recent work on linear series, I have particularly attempted to aim the discusion at a novice audience. My hope is that with a little faith and effort, these notes should be accessible to anyone having finished the standard introductory texts in algebraic geometry. The underlying theme of the lectures is the search for higher dimensional generalizations of the most basic facts about linear series on curves. But in an attempt to keep things elementary we work more or less exclusively on surfaces. Thus we end up discussing one central result -- viz. Reider's theorem -- from many points of view. Sticking to the case of surfaces allows one to eliminate many technical complexities, and I hope that parts of these lectures might therefore serve as a useful first introduction to the powerful cohomological techniques (involving $Q$-divisors) of contemporary

Finitistic Spaces with Orbit Space a Product of Projective Spaces

Abstract:Let G = Z2 act freely on a nitistic space X. If the mod 2 cohomology of X is isomorphic to the real projective space RP^{2n+1} (resp. complex projective space CP^{2n+1}) then the mod 2 cohomology of orbit spaces of these free actions are RP1 x CPn (resp. RP2 x HPn) [7]. In this paper, we have discussed converse of these results. We have showed that if the mod 2 cohomology of the orbit space X/G is RP1 x CPn (resp. RP2 x HPn) then the mod 2 cohomology of X is RP^{2n+1} or S1 x CPn (resp. CP^{2n+1} or S2 x HPn). A partial converse of free involutions on the product of projective spaces RPn x RP2m+1 (resp. CPn x CP2m+1) are also discussed.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to study GL(2,R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata of abelian differentials. The main result is that all higher rank affine invariant submanifolds in hyperelliptic components are branched covering constructions, i.e. every translation surface in the affine invariant submanifold covers a translation surface in a lower genus hyperelliptic component of a stratum of abelian differentials. This result implies finiteness of algebraically primitive Teichmuller curves in all hyperelliptic components for genus greater than two. A classification of all GL(2, R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata (up to computing connected components and up to finitely many nonarithmetic rank one orbit closures) is provided. Our main theorem resolves a pair of conjectures of Mirzakhani in the case of hyperelliptic components of moduli space.

Abstract:In this paper we study the orbit closure problem for a reductive group $G\subseteq GL(X)$ acting on a finite dimensional vector space $V$ over $\C$. We assume that the center of $GL(X)$ lies within $G$ and acts on $V$ through a fixed non-trivial character. We study points $y,z\in V$ where (i) $z$ is obtained as the leading term of the action of a 1-parameter subgroup $\lambda (t)\subseteq G$ on $y$, and (ii) $y$ and $z$ have large distinctive stabilizers $K,H \subseteq G$. Let $O(z)$ (resp. $O(y)$) denote the $G$-orbits of $z$ (resp. $y$), and $\overline{O(z)}$ (resp. $\overline{O(y)}$) their closures, then (i) implies that $z\in \overline{O(y)}$. We address the question: under what conditions can (i) and (ii) be simultaneously satisfied, i.e, there exists a 1-PS $\lambda \subseteq G$ for which $z$ is observed as a limit of $y$. Using $\lambda$, we develop a leading term analysis which applies to $V$ as well as to ${\cal G}= Lie(G)$ the Lie algebra of $G$ and its subalgebras ${\cal K}$ and ${\cal H}$, the Lie algebras of $K$ and $H$ respectively. Through this we construct the Lie algebra $\hat{\cal K} \subseteq {\cal H}$ which connects $y$ and $z$ through their Lie algebras. We develop the properties of $\hat{\cal K}$ and relate it to the action of ${\cal H}$ on $\overline{N}=V/T_z O(z)$, the normal slice to the orbit $O(z)$. We examine the case of {\em alignment} when a semisimple element belongs to both ${\cal H}$ and ${\cal K}$, and the conditions for the same. We illustrate some consequences of alignment. Next, we examine the possibility of {\em intermediate $G$-varieties} $W$ which lie between the orbit closures of $z$ and $y$, i.e. $\overline{O(z)} \subsetneq W \subsetneq O(y)$. These have a direct bearing on representation theoretic as well as geometric properties which connect $z$ and $y$.

Abstract:Let G = S^d, d = 0, 1 or 3, act freely on a finitistic connected space X. This paper gives the cohomology classification of X if a mod 2 or rational cohomology of the orbit space X/G is isomorphic to the product of a projective space and sphere FP^n x S^m, where F = R, C or H, respectively. For a free involution on X, a lower bound of covering dimension of the coincidence set of a continuous map f: X -> R^k is also determined.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a Lie group, and $H\subset G$ a closed subgroup. Let $\pi$ be an irreducible unitary representation of $G$. In this paper, we briefly discuss the orbit method and its application to the branching problem $\pi|_{H}$. We use the Gan-Gross-Prasad branching law for $(G, H)= ( U(p,q), U(p, q-1) )$ as an example to illustrate the relation between $\pro_{\f u(p, q-1)}^{\f u(p,q)} \mc O(\lambda)$ and the branching law of the discrete series $D_{\lambda}|_{U(p,q-1)}$ for $\lambda$ an regular elliptic element. We also discuss some results regarding branching laws and wave front sets. The presentation of this paper does not follow the historical timeline of development.

The ring of projective invariants of eight points on the line via representation theory

Abstract:The ring of projective invariants of eight ordered points on the line is a quotient of the polynomial ring on V, where V is a fourteen-dimensional representation of S_8, by an ideal I_8, so the modular fivefold (P^1)^8 // GL(2) is Proj(Sym* (V)/I_8). We show that there is a unique cubic hypersurface S in PV whose equation s is skew-invariant, and that the singular locus of S is the modular fivefold. In particular, over Z[1/3], the modular fivefold is cut out by the 14 partial derivatives of s. Better: these equations generate I_8. In characteristic 3, the cubic s is needed to generate the ideal. The existence of such a cubic was predicted by Dolgachev. Over Q, we recover the 14 quadrics found by computer calculation by Koike, and our approach yields a conceptual representation-theoretic description of the presentation. Additionally we find the graded Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution in any characteristic. The proof over Q is by pure thought, using Lie theory and commutative algebra. Over Z, the assistance of a computer was necessary. This result will be used as the base case describing the equations of the moduli space of an arbitrary number of points on P^1, with arbitrary weighting, in a later paper, completing the program of our previous paper (Duke Math. J.). The modular fivefold, and corresponding ring, are known to have a number of special incarnations, due to Deligne-Mostow, Kondo, and Freitag-Salvati Manni, for example as ball quotients or ring of modular forms respectively.

Local geometry of special pieces of nilpotent orbits

Abstract:The nilpotent cone of a simple Lie algebra is partitioned into locally closed subvarieties called special pieces, each containing exactly one special orbit. Lusztig conjectured that each special piece is the quotient of some smooth variety by a precise finite group $H$, a result proved for the classical types by Kraft and Procesi. The present work is about exceptional types. Our main result is a local version of Lusztig's conjecture: the intersection of a special piece with a Slodowy slice transverse to the minimal orbit in the piece is isomorphic to the quotient of a vector space by $H$. Along the way, we complete our previous work on the generic singularities of nilpotent orbit closures, by providing proofs for the last two `exotic' singularities. Four further, non-isolated, exotic singularities are studied: we show that quotients $\overline{{\mathcal 0}_{\text{mini}}(\mathfrak{so}_8)}/\mathfrak{S}_4$, $S^2({\mathbb C}^2/\mu_3)$, $S^3({\mathbb C}^2/\mu_2)$ and $\overline{{\mathcal 0}_{\text{mini}}(\mathfrak{sl}_3)}/\mathfrak{S}_4$ occur as Slodowy slice singularities between nilpotent orbits in types $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ respectively. We also extend, to fields other than ${\mathbb C}$, the results of Brylinski and Kostant on shared orbit pairs. In the course of our analysis, we discover a shared pair which is missing from Brylinski and Kostant's classification.

Abstract:In this paper we construct two new families of invariant maps that separate the orbits of the action of a finite Abelian group on a finite dimensional complex vector space. One of these families is Lipschitz continuous with respect to the quotient metric on the space of orbits, but involves computing large powers of the components of the vectors which can lead to instabilities. The other family avoids this issue by putting the powers only on the phase of the components, but in turn is not continuous. However, we show that they are Lipschitz continuous on the set of vectors with fixed support, so in particular they are Lipschitz on the set of vectors with no zero entries. Furthermore, the target dimension of these maps is small, i.e., linear in the original dimension.

Singularities of orthogonal and symplectic determinantal varieties

Abstract:Let either $GL(E)\times SO(F)$ or $GL(E)\times Sp(F)$ act naturally on the space of matrices $E\otimes F$. There are only finitely many orbits, and the orbit closures are orthogonal and symplectic generalizations of determinantal varieties, which can be described similarly using rank conditions. In this paper, we study the singularities of these varieties and describe their defining equations. We prove that in the symplectic case, the orbit closures are normal with good filtrations, and in characteristic $0$ have rational singularities. In the orthogonal case we show that most orbit closures will have the same properties, and determine precisely the exceptions to this.

Abstract:The complete classification of the orbits on subspaces under the action of the projective stabiliser of (classical) algebraic varieties is a challenging task, and few classifications are complete. We focus on a particular action of $\PGL(2,q^2)$ (and $\PSL(2,q^2)$) arising from the Hermitian Veronese curve in $\PG(3, q^2)$, a maximal rational curve embedded on a smooth Hermitian surface with some fascinating properties. The study of its orbits leads to a new construction of quasi-Hermitian surfaces: sets of points with the same combinatorial and geometric properties as a non-degenerate Hermitian surface.

On the $PGL_2(q)$-orbits of lines of $PG(3,q)$ and binary quartic forms

Abstract:We study the problem of classifying the lines of the projective $3$-space $PG(3,q)$ over a finite field $GF(q)$ into orbits of the group $G=PGL(2,q)$ of linear symmetries of the twisted cubic $C$. A generic line neither intersects $C$ nor lies in any of its osculating planes. While the non-generic lines have been classified into $G$-orbits in literature, it has been an open problem to classify the generic lines into $G$-orbits. For a general field $F$ of characteristic different from $2$ and $3$, the twisted cubic determines a symplectic polarity on $\mathbb P^3$. In the Klein representation of lines of $\mathbb P^3$, the tangent lines of $C$ are represented by a degree $4$ rational normal curve in a hyperplane $\mathcal H$ of the second exterior power $\mathbb P^5$ of $\mathbb P^3$. Atiyah studied the lines of $\mathbb P^3$ with respect to $C$, in terms of the geometries of these two curves. Polar duality of lines on $\mathbb P^3$ corresponds to Hodge duality on $\mathbb P^5$, and $\mathcal H$ is the hyperplane of Hodge self-dual elements of $\mathbb P^5$. We show that $\mathcal H$ can be identified in a $PGL_2$-equivariant way with the space of binary quartic forms over $F$, and that pairs of polar dual lines of $\mathbb P^3$ correspond to binary quartic forms whose apolar invariant is a square. We first solve the open problem of classifying binary quartic forms over $GF(q)$ into $G$-orbits, and then use it to solve the main problem.

A Note On the Orbits of a Symmetric Subgroup in the Flag Variety

Abstract:Motivated by relating the representation theory of the split real and $p$-adic forms of a connected reductive algebraic group $G$, we describe a subset of $2^r$ orbits on the complex flag variety for a certain symmetric subgroup. (Here $r$ is the semisimple rank of $G$.) This set of orbits has the property that, while the closure of individual orbits are generally singular, they are always smooth along other orbits in the set. This, in turn, implies consequences for the representation theory of the split real group.

Abstract:We study the property of uniform discreteness within discrete orbits of non-uniform lattices in $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$, acting on $\mathbb{R}^2$ by linear transformations. We provide quantitative consequences of previous results by using Diophantine properties. We give a partial result toward a conjecture of Lelièvre regarding the set of long cylinder holonomy vectors of the "golden L" translation surface: for any $\epsilon>0$, three points of this set can be found on a horizontal line within a distance of $\epsilon$ of each other.

Abstract:We classify all smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. We prove that the automorphism group of any such variety X acts with at most two orbits and that this group still acts with only two orbits on X blown up at the closed orbit. We characterize all smooth projective two-orbits varieties with Picard number 1 that satisfy this latter property.

Abstract:For a semisimple Lie algebra g the orbit method attempts to assign representations of g to (coadjoint) orbits in g*. Orbital varieties are particular Lagrangian subvarieties of such orbits leading to highest weight representations of g. In sl(n) orbital varieties are described by Young tableaux. In this paper we consider so called Richardson orbital varieties in sl(n). A Richardson orbital variety is an orbital variety whose closure is a standard nilradical. We show that in sl(n) a Richardson orbital variety closure is a union of orbital varieties. We give a complete combinatorial description of such closures in terms of Young tableaux. This is the second paper in the series of three papers devoted to a combinatorial description of orbital variety closures in sl(n) in terms of Young tableaux.
