Abstract:We define the notion of a sheaf over a complex of groups. As an application, we give a criterion for the developability of a complex of groups. When the developability is witnessed by a morphism to $\mathrm{GL}(V)$ for some $V$, our criterion is a characterization of developability.

Abstract:Given a general finite group $G$, we consider several categories built on it, their Grothendieck topologies and resulting sheaf categories. For a certain class of transporter categories and their quotients, equipped with atomic topology, we explicitly compute their sheaf categories via sheafification. This enables us to identify $G$-representations with various fixed-point sheaves. As a consequence, it provides an intrinsic new proof to the equivalence of M. Artin between the category of sheaves on the orbit category and that of group representations.

Abstract:A sheaf of modules on a site is said to be internally projective if sheaf hom with the module preserves epimorphism. In this note, we give an example showing that internally projective sheaves of abelian groups are not in general stable under base change to a slice. This shows that internal projectivity is weaker than projectivity in the internal logic of the topos, as expressed for example in terms of Shulman's stack semantics. The sheaf of groups that we use as a counterexample comes from recent work by Clausen and Scholze on light condensed sets.

Abstract:This paper makes some preliminary observations towards an extension of current work on graphs defined on groups to simplicial complexes. I define a variety of simplicial complexes on a group which are preserved by automorphisms of the group, and in many cases have a relation to familiar graphs on the group. The ones which seem to reach deepest into the graph structure are two forms of independence complex, and some results on the class of groups for which these two complexes coincide are given. Other examples are treated more briefly.

Abstract:We develop a somewhat elementary theory of quasicoherent sheaves on separated dagger analytic varieties and show that they satisfy descent in the analytic topology. We define compactly supported pushforwards and produce an adjunction $f_! \dashv f^!$, and produce an excision sequence for certain inclusions of admissible open subsets. Finally, we prove a Grothendieck duality theorem in some cases.

Abstract:We study the intermediate extension of the character sheaves on an adjoint group to the semi-stable locus of its wonderful compactification. We show that the intermediate extension can be described by a direct image construction. As a consequence, we show that the “ordinary” restriction of a character sheaf on the compactification to a “semi-stable stratum” is a shift of semisimple perverse sheaf and is closely related to Lusztig's restriction functor (from a character sheaf on a reductive group to a direct sum of character sheaves on a Levi subgroup). We also provide a (conjectural) formula for the boundary values inside the semi-stable locus of an irreducible character of a finite group of Lie type, which gives a partial answer to a question of Springer (2006) [21]. This formula holds for Steinberg character and characters coming from generic character sheaves. In the end, we verify Lusztig's conjecture Lusztig (2004) [16, 12.6] inside the semi-stable locus of the wonderful compactification.

Abstract:We analyse infinitesimal deformations of morphisms of locally free sheaves on a smooth projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In particular, we describe a differential graded Lie algebra controlling the deformation problem. As an application, we study infinitesimal deformations of pairs given by a locally free sheaf and a subspace of it sections with a view towards Brill-Noether theory.

As an application, we prove that the first degree Čech cohomology classes for the sheaf of smooth functions to an abelian diffeological group G classify diffeological principal G -bundles.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathtt{k}$ of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper we develop the theory of character sheaves on groups $G$ such that their neutral connected components $G^\circ$ are solvable algebraic groups. For such algebraic groups $G$ (which we call neutrally solvable) we will define the set $\operatorname{CS}(G)$ of character sheaves on $G$ as certain special (isomorphism classes of) objects in the category $\mathscr{D}_G(G)$ of $G$-equivariant $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$-complexes (where we fix a prime $\ell\neq p$) on $G$. We will describe a partition of the set $\operatorname{CS}(G)$ into finite sets known as $\mathbb{L}$-packets and we will associate a modular category $\mathscr{M}_L$ with each $\mathbb{L}$-packet $L$ of character sheaves using a truncated version of convolution of character sheaves. In the case where $\mathtt{k}=\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$ and $G$ is equipped with an $\mathbb{F}_q$-Frobenius $F$ we will study the relationship between $F$-stable character sheaves on $G$ and the irreducible characters of (all pure inner forms of) $G^F$. In particular, we will prove that the notion of almost characters (introduced by T. Shoji using Shintani descent) is well defined for neutrally solvable groups and that these almost characters coincide with the "trace of Frobenius" functions associated with $F$-stable character sheaves. We will also prove that the matrix relating the irreducible characters and almost characters is block diagonal where the blocks on the diagonal are parametrized by $F$-stable $\mathbb{L}$-packets. Moreover, we will prove that the block in this transition matrix corresponding to any $F$-stable $\mathbb{L}$-packet $L$ can be described as the crossed S-matrix associated with the auto-equivalence of the modular category $\mathscr{M}_L$ induced by $F$.

Equivariant sheaves for classical groups acting on Grassmannians

Abstract:Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional complex vector space. Assume that $V$ is a direct sum of subspaces each of which is equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form. In this paper, we introduce a stratification of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_k(V)$ related to the action of the appropriate product of orthogonal and symplectic groups, and we study the topology of this stratification. The main results involve sheaves with coefficients in a field of characteristic other than $2$. We prove that there are "enough" parity sheaves, and that the hypercohomology of each parity sheaf also satisfies a parity-vanishing property. This situation arises in the following context: let $x$ be a nilpotent element in the Lie algebra of either $G = \mathrm{Sp}_N(\mathbb{C})$ or $G = \mathrm{SO}_N(\mathbb{C})$, and let $V = \ker x \subset \mathbb{C}^N$. Our stratification of $\mathrm{Gr}_k(V)$ is preserved by the centralizer $G^x$, and we expect our results to have applications in Springer theory for classical groups.

Generic character sheaves on parahoric subgroups

Abstract:We prove that on a "generic locus" of the equivariant derived category of constructible sheaves, positive-depth parabolic induction is a $t$-exact equivalence of categories. Iterating this with respect to sequences of generic data allows us to take as input an arbitrary character sheaf on a connected algebraic group and output a family of positive-depth character sheaves on parahoric group schemes. In the simplest interesting setting, our construction produces a simple perverse sheaf associated to a sufficiently nontrivial multiplicative local system on a torus, resolving a conjecture of Lusztig. We prove, under a mild condition on $q$, that this realizes the character of the representation arising from the associated parahoric Deligne--Lusztig induction.

Abstract:We obtain a criteria for a pure sheaf to be semisimple. As a corollary, we prove the following: Let X 0 X_0 and S 0 S_0 be two schemes over a finite field F q \mathbf {F}_q , and let f 0 : X 0 → S 0 f_0: X_0\rightarrow S_0 be a proper smooth morphism. Assume S 0 S_0 is normal and geometrically connected, and assume there exists a closed point s s in S 0 S_0 such that the Frobenius automorphism F s F_s acts semisimply on H i ( X s ¯ , Q l ¯ ) H^i(X_{\bar s}, {\overline {\mathbf {Q}_l}}) , where X s ¯ X_{\bar s} is the geometric fiber of f 0 f_0 at s s (this last assumption is unnecessary if the semisimplicity conjecture is true). Then R i f 0 ∗ Q l ¯ R^if_{0\ast } {\overline {\mathbf {Q}_l}} is a semisimple sheaf on S 0 S_0 . This verifies a conjecture of Grothendieck and Serre provided the semisimplicity conjecture holds. As an application, we prove that the galois representations of function fields associated to the l l -adic cohomologies of K 3 K3 surfaces are semisimple. We also get a theorem of Zarhin about the semisimplicity of the Galois representations of function fields arising from abelian varieties. The proof relies heavily on Deligne’s work on Weil conjectures.
Soficity for group actions on sets and applications

Abstract:In this article we develop a notion of soficity for actions of countable groups on sets. We show two equivalent perspectives, several natural properties and examples. Notable examples include arbitrary actions of both amenable groups and free groups, and actions of sofic groups with locally finite stabilizers. As applications we prove soficity for generalized wreath products (and amalgamated free generalized wreath products) of sofic groups where the underlying group action is sofic. This generalizes the result of Hayes and Sale [HS18], and proves soficity for many new families of groups.

Abstract:Let G be a connected reductive group, P its parabolic subgroup. We consider the parabolic semi-infinite category of sheaves on the affine Grassmanian of G and construct the parabolic version of the semi-infinite IC-sheaf of each orbit. We establish some of its properties and relate it to sheaves on the Drinfeld compactification of the moduli stack Bun_P of P-torsors on a curve. We also relate the parabolic semi-infinite IC-sheaf with the dual baby Verma object on the spectral side.

Abstract:We provide a functorial presentation of the $(\infty, 1)$-category of sheaves of $(n, r)$-categories for all $-2 \leq n\leq\infty$ and $0 \leq r\leq n+2$ based on complete Segal space objects. In this definition, the equivalences of sheaves of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories are defined inductively, so we also provide a localisation at the coinductive equivalences to define the $(\infty, 1)$-category of sheaves of $\omega$-categories as well. We prove that the $(\infty, 1)$-category of sheaves of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories and the $(\infty, 1)$-category of sheaves of $\omega$-categories both define distributors over the underlying topos of sheaves of spaces. Moreover, we show that these distributors define terminal and initial fixed points with respect to the construction of complete Segal space objects in a distributor. We conclude with a sheafification result: the category of sheaves of $(n, r)$-categories over a site $\mathscr{C}$ can be presented as a strongly reflective localisation of $\mathbf{Fun}(\mathscr{C}^{\mathrm{op}}, \mathbf{Cat}_{(n, r)})$, where the localisation functor preserves fibre products over $\mathbf{Sh}(\mathscr{C})$, with the analogous result also holding for sheaves of $\omega$-categories.

Sheaves of Higher Categories on Generalised Spaces

Abstract:We study the homotopy right Kan extension of homotopy sheaves on a category to its free cocompletion, i.e. to its category of presheaves. Any pretopology on the original category induces a canonical pretopology of generalised coverings on the free cocompletion. We show that with respect to these pretopologies the homotopy right Kan extension along the Yoneda embedding preserves homotopy sheaves valued in (sufficiently nice) simplicial model categories. Moreover, we show that this induces an equivalence between sheaves of spaces on the original category and colimit-preserving sheaves of spaces on its free cocompletion. We present three applications in geometry and topology: first, we prove that diffeological vector bundles descend along subductions of diffeological spaces. Second, we deduce that various flavours of bundle gerbes with connection satisfy $(\infty,2)$-categorical descent. Finally, we investigate smooth diffeomorphism actions in smooth bordism-type field theories on a manifold. We show how these smooth actions allow us to extract the values of a field theory on any object coherently from its values on generating objects of the bordism category.
