Abstract:In this article we develop a notion of soficity for actions of countable groups on sets. We show two equivalent perspectives, several natural properties and examples. Notable examples include arbitrary actions of both amenable groups and free groups, and actions of sofic groups with locally finite stabilizers. As applications we prove soficity for generalized wreath products (and amalgamated free generalized wreath products) of sofic groups where the underlying group action is sofic. This generalizes the result of Hayes and Sale [HS18], and proves soficity for many new families of groups.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of sofic properties of group actions on sets. Specifically, the authors develop a new concept of sofic properties, which is applicable to the actions of countable groups on sets. By introducing this concept, they not only fill the gaps in the existing literature, but also open up new directions for the study of sofic properties.
### Main contributions
1. **Define sofic properties**:
- The authors propose a natural definition of sofic properties for group actions on sets, which is an area not fully discussed in the current literature.
- This definition is based on symmetric group mappings on finite sets and satisfies certain multiplicativity and orbit approximation conditions.
2. **Equivalent perspectives**:
- The paper shows two equivalent perspectives to understand sofic properties, which are helpful for understanding and verifying this property from different angles.
3. **Natural properties and examples**:
- The authors provide several natural properties and examples, such as the left actions of any countable group, the actions of countable groups on coset spaces, etc., and these examples are all sofic.
- In particular, they prove that the left action of any countable group is sofic if and only if the group itself is sofic.
4. **Applications**:
- The authors use the newly - defined sofic properties to prove the sofic properties of generalized direct products (and generalized direct products with free products), which generalizes the results of Hayes and Sale.
- This result provides proofs of soficity for many new groups, further enriching the examples of sofic groups.
### Main theorems
- **Theorem A**: Let \( G \) and \( H \) be sofic groups, and let \( \alpha: H \curvearrowright X \) be a sofic action. Then the generalized direct product \( G \wr_\alpha H \) is also sofic.
- **Theorem B**: Let \( G \) be a sofic group, and let \( N \) be a locally finite subgroup of \( G \). Then the left action of \( G \) on the coset space \( G/N \) is sofic.
### Open problems
- An important open problem is whether all actions of all sofic groups are sofic. The authors propose some related stability problems, and the solutions to these problems may provide answers to the above open problem.
### Conclusion
By introducing and studying the sofic properties of group actions on sets, this paper not only fills an important gap in the existing theory, but also provides new tools and directions for future research. In particular, it provides a strict proof of the sofic properties of generalized direct products, further expanding the scope of sofic groups.
