Abstract:In this paper we exhibit for every non amenable group that is initially sub-amenable (sometimes also referred to as LEA), two sofic approximations that are not conjugate by any automorphism of the universal sofic group. This addresses a question of Paunescu and generalizes the Elek-Szabo uniqueness theorem for sofic approximations.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the uniqueness problem of sofic approximations of non - amenable groups. Specifically, the authors Ben Hayes and Srivatsav Kunnawalkam Elayavalli explored whether for every initially sub - amenable non - amenable group, there exist two sofic approximations that are not conjugate via any automorphism. ### Background and Motivation In group theory and functional analysis, the study of approximate homomorphisms of groups is an important topic. These approximate homomorphisms are a sequence of mappings $\phi_n: G \to H_n$, where $G$ and $H_n$ are groups, each $H_n$ has a bi - invariant metric $d_n$, and satisfies: \[ \lim_{n \to \infty} d_n(\phi_n(gh), \phi_n(g)\phi_n(h)) = 0. \] An important application of this kind of study is sofic approximations, that is, approximate homomorphisms when $H_n$ is the finite symmetric group $Sym(d_n)$. The uniqueness problem of sofic approximations has always been one of the hot topics in this field. In particular, when $G$ is an amenable group, the results of Kerr - Li and Elek - Szabo show that any two sofic approximations are asymptotically conjugate. However, for non - amenable groups, whether this conclusion holds is still an open problem. ### Main Contributions of the Paper The main contribution of this paper lies in answering a question raised by Păunescu, that is, in the Elek - Szabo theorem, whether conjugation can be replaced by any automorphism. Specifically, the authors define that two sofic embeddings $\pi_1, \pi_2: G \to S$ are automorphically conjugate if there exists an automorphism $\Phi \in \text{Aut}(S)$ such that $\Phi \circ \pi_1=\pi_2$. They prove the following theorem: **Theorem 1.1**: Let $G$ be an initially sub - amenable quasigroup. Then $G$ satisfies the generalized Elek - Szabo property (that is, any two sofic embeddings are automorphically conjugate) if and only if $G$ is an amenable group. ### Proof Methods The proof of this theorem combines three main ideas: 1. **Identification of $L^{\infty}$ functions**: Identify $L^{\infty}$ functions on the Loeb measure space in the weak operator topology closure and prove that any automorphism will induce an automorphism of $L^{\infty}$ functions. 2. **Extreme point theory**: Utilize Păunescu's extreme point theory of sofic embeddings of non - amenable groups. 3. **Original results of Elek - Szabo**: Use the original results of Elek - Szabo to construct an embedding whose commutator does not act ergodically on the Loeb measure space. ### Conclusions This paper not only solves the problem raised by Păunescu, but also provides new perspectives and tools for further research on sofic approximations of non - amenable groups. In addition, the authors also discuss similar results when considering multiple embeddings, further enriching the theoretical framework in this field.
