Abstract:We develop a theory of soficity for actions on graphs and obtain new applications to the study of sofic groups. We establish various examples, stability and permanence properties of sofic actions on graphs, in particular soficity is preserved by taking several natural graph join operations. We prove that an action of a group on its Cayley graph is sofic if and only if the group is sofic. We show that arbitrary actions of amenable groups on graphs are sofic. Using a graph theoretic result of E. Hrushovski, we also show that arbitrary actions of free groups on graphs are sofic. Notably we show that arbitrary actions of sofic groups on graphs, with amenable stabilizers, are sofic, settling completely an open problem from \cite{gao2024soficity}. We also show that soficity is preserved by taking limits under a natural Gromov-Hausdorff topology, generalizing prior work of the first author \cite{gao2024actionslerfgroupssets}. Our work sheds light on a family of groups called graph wreath products, simultaneously generalizing graph products and generalized wreath products. Extending various prior results in this direction including soficity of generalized wreath products \cite{gao2024soficity}, B. Hayes and A. Sale \cite{HayesSale}, and soficity of graph products \cite{CHR, charlesworth2021matrix}, we show that graph wreath products are sofic if the action and acting groups are sofic. These results provide several new examples of sofic groups in a systematic manner.

Abstract:In this article we develop a notion of soficity for actions of countable groups on sets. We show two equivalent perspectives, several natural properties and examples. Notable examples include arbitrary actions of both amenable groups and free groups, and actions of sofic groups with locally finite stabilizers. As applications we prove soficity for generalized wreath products (and amalgamated free generalized wreath products) of sofic groups where the underlying group action is sofic. This generalizes the result of Hayes and Sale [HS18], and proves soficity for many new families of groups.

Abstract:In this note we study a family of graphs of groups over arbitrary base graphs where all vertex groups are isomorphic to a fixed countable sofic group $G$, and all edge groups $H<G$ are such that the embeddings of $H$ into $G$ are identical everywhere. We prove soficity for this family of groups under a flexible technical hypothesis for $H$ called $\sigma$-co-sofic. This proves soficity for group doubles $*_H G$, where $H<G$ is an arbitrary separable subgroup and $G$ is countable and sofic. This includes arbitrary finite index group doubles of sofic groups among various other examples.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that in either the convergent or overconvergent setting, an absolutely irreducible $F$-isocrystal on the absolute product of two or more smooth schemes over perfect fields of characteristic $p$, further equipped with actions of the partial Frobenius maps, is an external product of $F$-isocrystals over the multiplicands. The corresponding statement for lisse $\overline{{\mathbb{Q}}}_{\ell }$-sheaves, for $\ell \neq p$ a prime, is a consequence of Drinfeld’s lemma on the fundamental groups of absolute products of schemes in characteristic $p$. The latter plays a key role in V. Lafforgue’s approach to the Langlands correspondence for reductive groups with $\ell $-adic coefficients; the $p$-adic analogue will be considered in subsequent work with Daxin Xu.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to strengthen our understanding of sofic mean dimension of two typical classes of sofic group actions. First, we study finite group actions. We prove that sofic mean dimension of any amenable group action does not depend on the choice of sofic approximation sequences. Previously, this result was known only if the acting group is an infinite amenable group. Moreover, we investigate the full shifts, for all sofic groups and all alphabets. We show that sofic mean dimension of any full shift depends purely on its alphabet. Our method is a refinement of the classical technique in relation to the estimates from above and below, respectively, for mean dimension of some typical actions. The key point of our results is that they apply to all compact metrizable spaces without any restriction (in particular, the alphabet concerned in a full shift and the space involved in a finite group action are not required to be finite-dimensional). Furthermore, we improve the quantitative knowledge of sofic mean dimension, restricted to finite-dimensional compact metrizable spaces, for those two typical classes of sofic group actions. As a direct consequence of the main ingredient of our proof, we obtain the exact value of sofic mean dimension of all the actions of finite groups on finite-dimensional compact metrizable spaces. Previously, only an upper bound for these actions was given. Besides, we also get the exact value of sofic mean dimension of full shifts when the alphabet is finite-dimensional.

Soficity, Amenability, and LEF-ness for topological full groups

Abstract:In this paper, we study several finite approximation properties of topological full groups of group actions on the Cantor set such that free points are dense. Firstly, we establish that for such a distal action $\alpha$ of a countable discrete group $G$ on the Cantor set, the topological full group $[[\alpha]]$ is amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. This result is obtained through a novel method that detects hyperfiniteness in certain sofic approximation graph sequences of finitely generated subgroups of $[[\alpha]]$. We also provide estimates for related Følner functions. Next, we obtain negative results on the amenability of topological full groups for actions with zero topological entropy by calculating the topological entropy of certain examples provided by Elek and Monod. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the topological full group $[[\alpha]]$ of a minimal topologically free residually finite action $\alpha$ on the Cantor set is locally embeddable in the class of finite groups (LEF). This generalizes a result previously obtained by Grigorchuk and Medynets in the case of minimal $\mathbb{Z}$-actions. As an application, we show that topological full groups of certain Toeplitz subshifts on free groups are LEF and therefore sofic.

Abstract:We introduce the class of strongly sofic monoids. This class of monoids strictly contains the class of sofic groups and is a proper subclass of the class of sofic monoids. We define and investigate sofic topological entropy for actions of strongly sofic monoids on compact spaces. We show that sofic topological entropy is a topological conjugacy invariant for such actions and use this fact to prove that every strongly sofic monoid is surjunctive. This means that if $M$ is a strongly sofic monoid and $A$ is a finite alphabet set, then every injective cellular automaton $\tau \colon A^M \to A^M$ is surjective. As an application, we prove that the monoid algebra of a strongly sofic monoid with coefficients in an arbitrary field is always stably finite. Our results are extensions to strongly sofic monoids of two previously known properties of sofic groups. The first one is the celebrated Gromov-Weiss theorem asserting that every sofic group is surjunctive. The second is the Elek-Szabó theorem which says that group algebras of sofic groups satisfy Kaplansky's stable finiteness conjecture.

Abstract:In the spirit of the action of the symmetric group on the ring of polynomials in $n$ variables, we consider the actions of the seven frieze groups on rings of formal infinite linear combinations of monomials of restricted degree. For each group we describe the respective subring of invariants. We discuss also the structure of those rings as modules over each frieze group.

Abstract:If $\textbf{S}$ is a subcategory of metric spaces, we say that a group G has property $B\textbf{S}$ if any isometric action on an $\textbf{S}$-space has bounded orbits. Examples of such subcategories include metric spaces, affine real Hilbert spaces, CAT(0) cube complexes, connected median graphs, trees or ultra-metric spaces. The corresponding properties $B\textbf{S}$ are respectively Bergman's property, property FH (which, for countable groups, is equivalent to the celebrated Kazhdan's property (T)), property FW (both for CAT(0) cube complexes and for connected median graphs), property FA and uncountable cofinality. Historically many of these properties were defined using the existence of fixed points. Our main result is that for many subcategories $\textbf{S}$, the wreath product $G\wr_XH$ has property $B\textbf{S}$ if and only if both $G$ and $H$ have property $B\textbf{S}$ and $X$ is finite. On one hand, this encompasses in a general setting previously known results for properties FH and FW. On the other hand, this also applies to the Bergman's property. Finally, we also obtain that $G\wr_XH$ has uncountable cofinality if and only if both $G$ and $H$ have uncountable cofinality and $H$ acts on $X$ with finitely many orbits.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple Lie group. Consider a nilpotent element $e\in \mathfrak{g}$. Let $Z_G(e)$ be the centralizer of $e$ in $G$, and let $A_e:= Z_G(e)/Z_G(e)^{o}$ be its component group. Write $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$ for the set of irreducible components of the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_e$. We have an action of $A_e$ on $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$. When $\mathfrak{g}$ is exceptional, we give an explicit description of $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$ as an $A_e$-set. For $\mathfrak{g}$ of classical type, we describe the stabilizers for the $A_e$-action. With this description, we prove a conjecture of Lusztig and Sommers. These results suggest highly nontrivial relations between Springer fibers and cells in Weyl groups.

Local permutation stability

Abstract:We introduce a notion of "local stability in permutations" for finitely generated groups. If a group is sofic and locally stable in our sense, then it is also locally embeddable into finite groups (LEF). Our notion is weaker than the "permutation stability" introduced by Glebsky-Rivera and Arzhantseva-Paunescu, which allows one to upgrade soficity to residual finiteness. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for an amenable group to be locally permutation stable, in terms of invariant random subgroups (IRSs), inspired by a similar criterion for permutation stability due to Becker, Lubotzky and Thom. We apply our criterion to prove that derived subgroups of topological full groups of Cantor minimal subshifts are locally stable, using Zheng's classification of IRSs for these groups. This last result provides continuum-many groups which are locally stable, but not stable.

This addresses a question of Paunescu and generalizes the Elek-Szabo uniqueness theorem for sofic approximations.

Abstract:We study symbolic dynamical representations of actions of the first Grigorchuk group $G$, namely its action on the boundary of the infinite rooted binary tree, its representation in the topological full group of a minimal substitutive $\mathbb{Z}$-shift, and its representation as a minimal system of Schreier graphs. We show that the first system admits an SFT cover, and the latter two systems are conjugate to sofic subshifts on $G$, but are not of finite type.

Abstract:Let be a group and a subgroup. The free extension of an -subshift to is the -subshift whose configurations are those for which the restriction to every coset of is a configuration from . We study the case of for infinite and finitely generated groups and . On the one hand, we show that if is nonamenable and has decidable word problem, then the free extension to of any -subshift which is effectively closed is a sofic -subshift. On the other hand, we prove that if both and are amenable, there are always -subshifts which are effectively closed by patterns whose free extension to is non-sofic. We also present a few applications in the form of a new simulation theorem and a new class of groups which admit strongly aperiodic SFTs.

Abstract:We examine several definitions of soficity for monoids obtained by generalizing various definitions of sofic groups. They are not all equivalent and include the definition recently introduced by Ceccherini-Silberstein and Coornaert. One of these definitions readily generalizes to semigroups (albeit in an arguably unsatisfying way), thus addressing a question asked by Kambites. We conclude by proposing a definition of soficity for a general dynamical system consisting of a semigroup acting by measure-preserving transformations on a probability space.
