Abstract:The entropy in dynamical systems was introduced by A. Kolmogorov. Initially dedicated to iterations of one finite measure preserving transformation, the notion was gradually generalized so as to encompass amenable group actions and topological actions. L. Bowen (2008) succeeded in breaking the non-amenable frontier by introducing the sofic entropy. This invariant provides the same services as the classical entropy for the measured actions of the sofic groups (a class which contains the residually finite groups). In 2010, D. Kerr et H. Li established a topological version together with a variational principle.

Abstract:Recently Lewis Bowen introduced a notion of entropy for measure-preserving actions of countable sofic groups admitting a generating measurable partition with finite entropy; and then David Kerr and Hanfeng Li developed an operator-algebraic approach to actions of countable sofic groups not only on a standard probability space but also on a compact metric space, and established the global variational principle concerning measure-theoretic and topological entropy in this sofic context. By localizing these two kinds of entropy, in this paper we prove a local version of the global variational principle for any finite open cover of the space, and show that these local measure-theoretic and topological entropy coincide with their classical counterparts when the acting group is an infinite amenable group.

Abstract:We introduce the class of strongly sofic monoids. This class of monoids strictly contains the class of sofic groups and is a proper subclass of the class of sofic monoids. We define and investigate sofic topological entropy for actions of strongly sofic monoids on compact spaces. We show that sofic topological entropy is a topological conjugacy invariant for such actions and use this fact to prove that every strongly sofic monoid is surjunctive. This means that if $M$ is a strongly sofic monoid and $A$ is a finite alphabet set, then every injective cellular automaton $\tau \colon A^M \to A^M$ is surjective. As an application, we prove that the monoid algebra of a strongly sofic monoid with coefficients in an arbitrary field is always stably finite. Our results are extensions to strongly sofic monoids of two previously known properties of sofic groups. The first one is the celebrated Gromov-Weiss theorem asserting that every sofic group is surjunctive. The second is the Elek-Szabó theorem which says that group algebras of sofic groups satisfy Kaplansky's stable finiteness conjecture.

Abstract:Let [Formula: see text] be a compact metric space and [Formula: see text] a countable infinite discrete amenable group acting on [Formula: see text]. Like in the [Formula: see text]-action cases we define the notion of local entropy and by it we bound the difference between metric entropy and that of a partition, and bound the difference between topological entropy and that of a separated set, which generalize Theorems 1(1) and 1(2) in [Newhouse, 1989] from [Formula: see text]-actions to amenable group actions. We further prove that the entropy function [Formula: see text] is upper semi-continuous on [Formula: see text] for an asymptotic entropy expansive amenable group action.

Abstract:Entropy of measure preserving or continuous actions of amenable discrete groups allows for various equivalent approaches. Among them are the ones given by the techniques developed by Ollagnier and Pinchon on the one hand and the Ornstein-Weiss lemma on the other. We extend these two approaches to the context of actions of amenable topological groups. In contrast to the discrete setting, our results reveal a remarkable difference between the two concepts of entropy in the realm of non-discrete groups: while the first quantity collapses to 0 in the non-discrete case, the second yields a well-behaved invariant for amenable unimodular groups. Concerning the latter, we moreover study the corresponding notion of topological pressure, prove a Goodwyn-type theorem, and establish the equivalence with the uniform lattice approach (for locally compact groups admitting a uniform lattice). Our study elaborates on a version of the Ornstein-Weiss lemma due to Gromov.

Abstract:Graph independence (also known as $\epsilon$-independence or $\lambda$-independence) is a mixture of classical independence and free independence corresponding to graph products or groups and operator algebras. Using conjugation by certain random permutation matrices, we construct random matrix models for graph independence with amalgamation over the diagonal matrices. This yields a new probabilist,ic proof that graph products of sofic groups are sofic.

Abstract:In this paper, entropies, including measure-theoretic entropy and topological entropy, are considered for random $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions which are generated by random compositions of the generators of $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions. Applying Pesin's theory for commutative diffeomorphisms we obtain a measure-theoretic entropy formula of $C^{2}$ random $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions via the Lyapunov spectra of the generators. Some formulas and bounds of topological entropy for certain random $\mathbb{Z}^k$(or $\mathbb{Z}_+^k$ )-actions generated by more general maps, such as Lipschitz maps, continuous maps on finite graphs and $C^{1}$ expanding maps, are also obtained. Moreover, as an application, we give a formula of Friedland's entropy for certain $C^{2}$ $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions.

Abstract:This paper introduces the concepts of correlation entropy and local correlation entropy for free semigroup actions on compact metric space, and investigates their underlying properties. Thereafter, we extend certain classical findings on correlation entropy and local correlation entropy to the realm of free semigroup actions. Finally, we establish the interconnections between topological entropy, measure-theoretic entropy, correlation entropy, and local correlation entropy for free semigroup actions under different conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we shall introduce h-expansiveness and asymptotical h-expansiveness for actions of sofic groups. By definition, each h-expansive action of a sofic group is asymptotically h-expansive. We show that each expansive action of a sofic group is h-expansive, and, for any given asymptotically h-expansive action of a sofic group, the entropy function (with respect to measures) is upper semi-continuous and hence the system admits a measure with maximal entropy.

Abstract:In this article we develop a notion of soficity for actions of countable groups on sets. We show two equivalent perspectives, several natural properties and examples. Notable examples include arbitrary actions of both amenable groups and free groups, and actions of sofic groups with locally finite stabilizers. As applications we prove soficity for generalized wreath products (and amalgamated free generalized wreath products) of sofic groups where the underlying group action is sofic. This generalizes the result of Hayes and Sale [HS18], and proves soficity for many new families of groups.

Abstract:In this short note, for countably infinite amenable group actions, we provide topological proofs for the following results: Bowen topological entropy (dimensional entropy) of the whole space equals the usual topological entropy along tempered Følner sequences; the Hausdorff dimension of an amenable subshift (for certain metric associated to some Følner sequence) equals its topological entropy. This answers questions by Zheng and Chen (Israel Journal of Mathematics 212 (2016), 895-911) and Simpson (Theory Comput. Syst. 56 (2015), 527-543).

Abstract:In this paper, we study several finite approximation properties of topological full groups of group actions on the Cantor set such that free points are dense. Firstly, we establish that for such a distal action $\alpha$ of a countable discrete group $G$ on the Cantor set, the topological full group $[[\alpha]]$ is amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. This result is obtained through a novel method that detects hyperfiniteness in certain sofic approximation graph sequences of finitely generated subgroups of $[[\alpha]]$. We also provide estimates for related Følner functions. Next, we obtain negative results on the amenability of topological full groups for actions with zero topological entropy by calculating the topological entropy of certain examples provided by Elek and Monod. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the topological full group $[[\alpha]]$ of a minimal topologically free residually finite action $\alpha$ on the Cantor set is locally embeddable in the class of finite groups (LEF). This generalizes a result previously obtained by Grigorchuk and Medynets in the case of minimal $\mathbb{Z}$-actions. As an application, we show that topological full groups of certain Toeplitz subshifts on free groups are LEF and therefore sofic.

Typical sofic entropy and local limits for free group shift systems

Abstract:We show that for any invariant measure $\mu$ on a free group shift system, there are two numbers $h^\flat \leq h^\sharp$ which in some sense are the typical upper and lower sofic entropy values. We also give a condition under which $h^\flat = h^\sharp = \mathrm{f}(\mu)$, where $\mathrm{f}$ is the annealed entropy (also called the f invariant). This can be used to compute typical local limits of finitary Gibbs states over sequences of random regular graphs. As examples, we work out typical local limits of the Ising and Potts models. We also show that, for Markov chains, the Kesten--Stigum second-eigenvalue reconstruction criterion actually implies there are no good models over a typical sofic approximation (i.e. $h^\sharp = -\infty$). In particular, we have an exact value for the typical entropy $h^\flat = h^\sharp$ of the free-boundary Ising state: it is equal to the annealed entropy $\mathrm{f}$ for interaction strengths up to the reconstruction threshold, after which it drops abruptly to $-\infty$.

Abstract:The local properties of entropy for a countable discrete amenable group action are studied. For such an action, a local variational principle for a given finite open cover is established, from which the variational relation between the topological and measure-theoretic entropy tuples is deduced. While doing this it is shown that two kinds of measure-theoretic entropy for finite Borel covers coincide. Moreover, two special classes of such an action: systems with uniformly positive entropy and completely positive entropy are investigated.

History and Overview

Abstract:This note is purely expository and is in Russian. We show how to prove interesting combinatorial results using the local Lovasz lemma. The note is accessible for students having basic knowledge of combinatorics; the notion of independence is defined and the Lovasz lemma is stated and proved. Our exposition follows `Probabilistic methods' of N. Alon and J. Spencer. The main difference is that we show how the proof could have been invented. The material is presented as a sequence of problems, which is peculiar not only to Zen monasteries but also to advanced mathematical education; most problems are presented with hints or solutions.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to strengthen our understanding of sofic mean dimension of two typical classes of sofic group actions. First, we study finite group actions. We prove that sofic mean dimension of any amenable group action does not depend on the choice of sofic approximation sequences. Previously, this result was known only if the acting group is an infinite amenable group. Moreover, we investigate the full shifts, for all sofic groups and all alphabets. We show that sofic mean dimension of any full shift depends purely on its alphabet. Our method is a refinement of the classical technique in relation to the estimates from above and below, respectively, for mean dimension of some typical actions. The key point of our results is that they apply to all compact metrizable spaces without any restriction (in particular, the alphabet concerned in a full shift and the space involved in a finite group action are not required to be finite-dimensional). Furthermore, we improve the quantitative knowledge of sofic mean dimension, restricted to finite-dimensional compact metrizable spaces, for those two typical classes of sofic group actions. As a direct consequence of the main ingredient of our proof, we obtain the exact value of sofic mean dimension of all the actions of finite groups on finite-dimensional compact metrizable spaces. Previously, only an upper bound for these actions was given. Besides, we also get the exact value of sofic mean dimension of full shifts when the alphabet is finite-dimensional.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of weak containment for stationary actions of a countable group and define a natural topology on the space of weak equivalence classes.
