Abstract:We study the intermediate extension of the character sheaves on an adjoint group to the semi-stable locus of its wonderful compactification. We show that the intermediate extension can be described by a direct image construction. As a consequence, we show that the “ordinary” restriction of a character sheaf on the compactification to a “semi-stable stratum” is a shift of semisimple perverse sheaf and is closely related to Lusztig's restriction functor (from a character sheaf on a reductive group to a direct sum of character sheaves on a Levi subgroup). We also provide a (conjectural) formula for the boundary values inside the semi-stable locus of an irreducible character of a finite group of Lie type, which gives a partial answer to a question of Springer (2006) [21]. This formula holds for Steinberg character and characters coming from generic character sheaves. In the end, we verify Lusztig's conjecture Lusztig (2004) [16, 12.6] inside the semi-stable locus of the wonderful compactification.

Abstract:With a view to determining character values of finite reductive groups at unipotent elements, we prove a number of results concerning inner products of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters with characteristic functions of character sheaves, here called Lusztig functions. These are used to determine projections of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters to the space of unipo- tent characters, and to the space of characters with a given wave front set. Such projections are expressed largely in terms of Weyl group data. We show how the values of characters at their unipotent support or wave front set are determined by such data. In some exceptional groups we show that the projection of a generalised Gelfand-Graev character to a family with the same wave front set is (up to sign) the dual of a Mellin transform. Using these results, in certain cases we are able to determine roots of unity which relate almost characters to the characteristic functions. In particular we show how to compute the values of all unipotent characters at all unipotent classes for the exceptional adjoint groups of type G2, F4, E6, E7 and E8. We also pro- vide an appendix which gives a complete list of the cuspidal character sheaves on all quasi-simple groups.

Abstract:Lusztig's algorithm of computing generalized Green functions of reductive groups involves an ambiguity of certain scalars. In this paper, for reductive groups of classical type with arbitrary characteristic, we determine those scalars explicitly, and eliminate the ambiguity. Our results imply that all the generalized Green functions of classical type are computable.

Abstract:We prove that on a "generic locus" of the equivariant derived category of constructible sheaves, positive-depth parabolic induction is a $t$-exact equivalence of categories. Iterating this with respect to sequences of generic data allows us to take as input an arbitrary character sheaf on a connected algebraic group and output a family of positive-depth character sheaves on parahoric group schemes. In the simplest interesting setting, our construction produces a simple perverse sheaf associated to a sufficiently nontrivial multiplicative local system on a torus, resolving a conjecture of Lusztig. We prove, under a mild condition on $q$, that this realizes the character of the representation arising from the associated parahoric Deligne--Lusztig induction.

Abstract:In a previous paper, "Generalized Green functions and unipotent classes for finite reductive groups, I", we have determined certain unknown scalars involved in the algorithm of computing generalized Green functions in the case of SL_n. In this paper, we consider a similar problem for the case of classical groups Sp_{2n}, SO_N with arbitrary characteristic. Our result enables us, in particular, to compute Green functions in bad characteristic case, which was not known before.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathtt{k}$ of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper we develop the theory of character sheaves on groups $G$ such that their neutral connected components $G^\circ$ are solvable algebraic groups. For such algebraic groups $G$ (which we call neutrally solvable) we will define the set $\operatorname{CS}(G)$ of character sheaves on $G$ as certain special (isomorphism classes of) objects in the category $\mathscr{D}_G(G)$ of $G$-equivariant $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$-complexes (where we fix a prime $\ell\neq p$) on $G$. We will describe a partition of the set $\operatorname{CS}(G)$ into finite sets known as $\mathbb{L}$-packets and we will associate a modular category $\mathscr{M}_L$ with each $\mathbb{L}$-packet $L$ of character sheaves using a truncated version of convolution of character sheaves. In the case where $\mathtt{k}=\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$ and $G$ is equipped with an $\mathbb{F}_q$-Frobenius $F$ we will study the relationship between $F$-stable character sheaves on $G$ and the irreducible characters of (all pure inner forms of) $G^F$. In particular, we will prove that the notion of almost characters (introduced by T. Shoji using Shintani descent) is well defined for neutrally solvable groups and that these almost characters coincide with the "trace of Frobenius" functions associated with $F$-stable character sheaves. We will also prove that the matrix relating the irreducible characters and almost characters is block diagonal where the blocks on the diagonal are parametrized by $F$-stable $\mathbb{L}$-packets. Moreover, we will prove that the block in this transition matrix corresponding to any $F$-stable $\mathbb{L}$-packet $L$ can be described as the crossed S-matrix associated with the auto-equivalence of the modular category $\mathscr{M}_L$ induced by $F$.

Abstract:In this paper, we formulate the notion of split elements of a unipotent class in a connected reductive group $G$. Generalized Green functions of $G$ can be computed by using Lusztig's algorithm, if split elements exist for any unipotent class. The existence of split elements is reduced to the case where $G$ is a simply connected, almost simple group. We show, in the case of classical groups, split elements exist, which is a refinement of previous results. In the case of exceptional groups, we show the existence of split elements, possibly except one class for $G$ of type $E_7$.

Some of the remaining open questions (concerning certain roots of unity) for the cuspidal unipotent character sheaves of groups of exceptional type are resolved.

Abstract:We prove a microlocal characterisation of character sheaves on a reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of sufficiently large positive characteristic: a perverse irreducible G-equivariant sheaf is a character sheaf if and only if it has nilpotent singular support and is quasi-admissible. We also present geometric proofs, in positive characteristic, of the equivalence between being admissible and being a character sheaf, and various characterisations of cuspidal sheaves, following the work of Mirković.

Abstract:In the first part, we construct a new isomorphism between the endomorphism algebra of an induced cuspidal character sheaf and the group algebra of the relative Weyl group involved. We show it differs from the isomorphism of Lusztig by a linear character, and we relate this linear character to some stabilizers. Some consequences for characteristic functions of character sheaves are obtained. In the second part, we compute explicitly this linear character whenever the cuspidal local system is supported by the regular unipotent class and, as an application of these methods, we obtain a refinement of Digne, Lehrer and Michel's theorem on Lusztig restriction of Gel'fand-Graev characters.

Abstract:Mirković introduced the notion of character sheaves on a Lie algebra. Due to their simple geometric characterization, character sheaves on Lie algebras can be thought of as a simplified model for Lusztig's theory of character sheaves on algebraic groups. We extend the theory to the case of modular coefficients. Along the way, we will reprove some of Mirković's results and provide connections with the modular generalized Springer correspondence of Achar, Juteau, Riche, and Williamson.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group with an involution σ on it. Let H be an open subgroup of Gσ with a character χ on it. Associated to a “theta stable”, “σ-split” parabolic subalgebra, and using the Zuckerman functor, we construct representations of G together with χ-equivariant linear functionals on them. We apply this construction to prove a non-vanishing hypothesis of H. Grobner and A. Raghuram in the study of algebraicity of critical L-values.

Abstract:Let $\breve{K}$ be a complete discrete valuation field with an algebraically closed residue field ${k}$ and ring of integers $\breve{O}$. Let $T$ be a torus defined over $\breve{K}$. Let $L^+T$ denote the connected commutative pro-algebraic group over ${k}$ obtained by applying the Greenberg functor to the connected Néron model of $T$ over $\breve{O}$. Following the work of Serre for the multiplicative group, we first compute the fundamental group $\pi_1(L^+T)$. We then study multiplicative local systems (or character sheaves) on $L^+T$ and establish a local Langlands correspondence for them. Namely, we construct a canonical isomorphism of abelian groups between the group of multiplicative local systems on $L^+T$ and inertial local Langlands parameters for $T$. Finally, we relate our results to the classical local Langlands correspondence for tori over local fields due to Langlands, via the sheaf-function correspondence.

Abstract: In this paper, we will develop more character varieties for a finite group $G$ by generalizing original character theory of Frobenius to good partition algebras. In the view of this generalization theory, we will reformulate the refined McKay conjecture and part of Navarro' conjecture on degrees of irreducible characters into a new general conjecture in the form of equality of polynomials. We will define the Frobenius polynomial, degree polynomial and prove that the ordinary character table of $G$ is equivalent to the Frobenius polynomial of the center of $FG$. We find a new series of invariants $p_{ijl}$ for a finite group. As an application of this new invariants, we prove that the normal series of a finite pure perfect group is determined by the lengths of its conjugate classes.
