Abstract:We have examined the atomic theory behind recent constraints on the violation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle derived from experiments that look for X-rays emitted from conductors while a large current is present. We also re-examine the assumptions underlying such experiments. We use the results of these studies to assess pilot measurements to develop an improved test of the Principle. We present an improved limit of 1/2β^2 < 2.6×10^-39 on the Pauli Exclusion Principle. This limit is the best to date for interactions between a system of fermions and a fermion that has not previously interacted with that given system. That is, for systems that do not obviously violate the Messiah-Greenberg symmetrization-postulate selection rule.

Abstract:Charge conservation and the Pauli exclusion principle result from fundamental symmetries in the standard model of particle physics, and are typically taken as axiomatic. High-precision tests for small violations of these symmetries could point to new physics. Here we consider three models for violation of these processes, which would produce detectable ionization in the high-purity germanium detectors of the M ajorana D emonstrator experiment. Using a 37.5 kg yr exposure, we report a lower limit on the electron mean lifetime, improving the previous best limit for the decay channel by more than an order of magnitude. We also present searches for two types of violation of the Pauli exclusion principle, setting limits on the probability of an electron to be found in a symmetric quantum state.

Abstract:The Fermi–Dirac and Bose–Einstein statistics are considered to be key concepts in quantum mechanics, and they are used to explain the occupancy limit of electron orbitals. We investigate the physical origin of these two statistics and uncover that the key determining factor is whether an individual electron spin is measurable or not. Microscopically, a system with individually measurable electron spins corresponds to the presence of Larmor spin precession in electron–electron interactions, while the non-measurability of individual electron spins corresponds to the absence of Larmor spin precession. Both interaction types are possible, and the favored interaction type is thermodynamically determined. The absence of Larmor spin precession is realized in coherent electron states, and coherent electrons therefore obey Bose–Einstein statistics.

Grain-boundary grooving and agglomeration of alloy thin films with a slow-diffusing species

Abstract:We present a general phase-field model for grain-boundary grooving and agglomeration of polycrystalline alloy thin films. In particular, we study the effects of slow-diffusing species on grooving rate. As the groove grows, the slow species becomes concentrated near the groove tip so that further grooving is limited by the rate at which it diffuses away from the tip. At early times the dominant diffusion path is along the boundary, while at late times it is parallel to the substrate. This change in path strongly affects the time-dependence of grain boundary grooving and increases the time to agglomeration. Abstract:Detection of parity and time-reversal symmetry-odd electric dipole moments (EDMs) within currently achievable resolution would evidence physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Via the -theorem, which includes charge conjugation , such low-energy searches complement high-energy physics experiments that probe -violation up to the TeV scale. Heavy-elemental atoms and molecules are considered to be among the most promising candidates for a first direct detection of , -violation due to enhancement effects that increase steeply with increasing nuclear charge number Z . However, different , -odd sources on the subatomic level can contribute to molecular or atomic EDMs, which are target of measurements, and this complicates obtaining rigorous bounds on , -violation on a fundamental level. Consequently, several experiments of complementary sensitivity to these individual , -odd sources are required for this purpose. Herein, a simply-applicable qualitative model is developed for global analysis of the , -odd parameter space from an electronic-structure theory perspective. Rules of thumb are derived for the choice of atoms and molecules in terms of their angular momenta and nuclear charge number. Contrary to naive expectations from Z -scaling laws, it is demonstrated that medium-heavy molecules with Z ≤ 54 can be of great value to tighten global bounds on , -violating parameters, in particular, if the number of complementary experiments increases. The model is confirmed by explicit density functional theory calculations of all relevant , -odd electronic structure parameters in systems that were used in past experiments or are of current interest for future experiments, respectively: the atoms Xe, Cs, Yb, Hg, Tl, Ra, Fr and the molecules CaOH, SrOH, YO, CdH, BaF, YbF, YbOH, HfF + , WC, TlF, PbO, RaF, ThO, ThF + and PaF 3+ .

Abstract:We review the main recent progresses in non-commutative space-time phenomenology in underground experiments. A popular model of non-commutative space-time is $\theta$-Poincar\'e model, based on the Groenewold-Moyal plane algebra. This model predicts a violation of the Spin-statistic theorem, in turn implying an energy and angular dependent violation of the Pauli Exclusion principle. Pauli Exclusion Principle Violating transitions in nuclear and atomic systems can be tested with very high accuracy in underground laboratory experiments such as DAMA/LIBRA and VIP(2). In this paper we derive that the $\theta$-Poincar\'e model can be already ruled-out until the Planck scale, from nuclear transitions tests by DAMA/LIBRA experiment.

Abstract:It is shown that violation of the Born Rule leads to a breakdown of the correspondence between the quantum electromagnetic field and its classical counterpart. Specifically, the relationship of the quantum coherent state to the classical electromagnetic field turns out to imply that if the Born Rule were violated, this could result in apparent deviations from the energy conservation law applying to the field and its sources (Poynting's Theorem). The result suggests that the Born Rule is just as fundamental a law of Nature as are the conservation laws.

Abstract:Axions are hypothetical particles that were proposed to solve the strong charge–parity problem in high-energy physics. Although they have long been known in quantum field theory, axions have so far not been observed as elementary particles in nature. Yet, in condensed-matter systems, axions can also emerge as quasiparticles in certain materials such as strong topological insulators. The corresponding axion field is expected to lead to exciting physical phenomena in condensed-matter systems, such as a fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect, the chiral anomaly, exotic Casimir–Lifshitz repulsion and a linear magnetoelectric response quantized in units of the fine-structure constant. First signatures of electronic states that permit axion dynamics have been reported in condensed-matter systems. In this Review, we explore the concepts that introduce axion fields in condensed-matter systems and present experimental findings. We discuss predicted and realized material systems, the prospects of using axion electrodynamics for next-generation devices and the search for axions as a possible constituent of dark matter. Axion fields provide a unique way to understand large quantized electromagnetic responses in topological insulators and dynamics in Weyl semimetals. This Review discusses the theory of axion fields in condensed matter, their experimental realization and their application in next-generation devices.

Abstract:Symmetry breaking states of matter can transmit symmetry breaking to nearby atoms or molecular complexes, perturbing their spectra. We calculate one such effect, involving the `axion electrodynamics' relevant to topological insulators, quantitatively, and identify a signature for T violating superconductivity. We provide an operator framework whereby effects of this kind can be analyzed systematically.

Abstract:The article raises the question of the strange behavior of electrons in an atom, when the electronic orbitals of the P- and d-states of the atom have the form of eights with nodal points in the nucleus of the atom, as well as the discovery of the mysterious K-capture of an electron when the nuclei of atoms of some isotopes of chemical elements someh they sometimes capture an electron from the inner (K- or L-) electron shell of the atom. It has not been possible to explain these phenomena within the framework of the atomic model existing in quantum electrodynamics. In the new model of the atom, proposed by Professor Lev Sapogin in Unitary Quantum Theory, the electron makes quantum leaps within the orbital not randomly, as physicists thought, but through the nucleus of the atom, each time tunneling through it. In this case, the quantization of the energy levels (orbitals) of electrons in an atom is explained by the distribution of nodes and antinodes in a standing wave of an electron, and an integer number of de Broglie wavelengths should be located in the diameter of the electron orbital. The article shows the dependence of the magnitude of the interaction constants in the hydrogen nucleus and, in particular, the fine structure constant, discovered by the CMS cooperation in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in 2019, during reactions in pp collisions with energies from 1 TeV to 13 TeV and an intranuclear pressure of 1035 Pascal. Abstract:We analyze critical and massive SO(5) superspin regimes for correlated electrons on a two-chain ladder. We identify fundamental low energy excitations, which carry the quantum numbers of a free electron, and can be probed in (inverse) photo-emission experiments. These excitations do not obey the usual Pauli Principle, but are governed by specific forms of so-called non-abelian exclusion statistics.

Abstract:We propose to deploy limits that arise from different tests of the Pauli Exclusion Principle: i) to provide theories of quantum gravity with experimental guidance; ii) to distinguish, among the plethora of possible models, the ones that are already ruled out by current data; iii) to direct future attempts to be in accordance with experimental constraints. We first review experimental bounds on nuclear processes forbidden by the Pauli Exclusion Principle, which have been derived by several experimental collaborations making use of various detector materials. Distinct features of the experimental devices entail sensitivities on the constraints hitherto achieved that may differ from one another by several orders of magnitude. We show that with choices of these limits, well-known examples of flat noncommutative space-time instantiations of quantum gravity can be heavily constrained, and eventually ruled out. We devote particular attention to the analysis of the kappa-Minkowski and theta-Minkowski noncommutative spacetimes. These are deeply connected to some scenarios in string theory, loop quantum gravity, and noncommutative geometry. We emphasize that the severe constraints on these quantum spacetimes, although they cannot rule out theories of top-down quantum gravity to which they are connected in various ways, provide a powerful limitation for those models. Focus on this will be necessary in the future.

Abstract:Precision study of few-electron, high-Z ions is a privileged field for probing high-field, bound-state quantum electrodynamics (BSQED). However, the accuracy of such tests is plagued by nuclear uncertainties, which are often larger than the BSQED effects under investigation. We propose an alternative method with exotic atoms and show that transitions may be found between circular Rydberg states where nuclear contributions are vanishing while BSQED effects remain large. When probed with newly available quantum sensing detectors, these systems offer gains in sensitivity of 1 to 2 orders of magnitude, while the mean electric field largely exceeds the Schwinger limit.

Abstract:Gravitational response of real objects is a fascinating topic. Einstein formalized the Galileo-Newton ideas of equality of free falls into complete physical equivalence or the Principle of Equivalence [Albert Einstein, The meaning of Relativity, 5 ed. Princeton, (1921)]. However, in this article we point out that in a gravitational field, g, the bulk response of an electrically neutral but atomistic test mass is model dependant. Depending on the particular quantum approximation scheme, opposing results for the gravity induced (electric) polarization P have been reported. For instance, P is small and oriented anti-parallel to g, if the deformations of the positive background lattice is neglected But, it is about ~ 100,1000 times larger and opposite in direction in the elastic lattice approximation. Hence, the elastic model contradicts reports of polarization in accelerated metals [Richard C. Tolman & <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://T.Dale" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> Stewart, Phys Rev 28, 794 (1926); G. F. Moorhead & G. I. Opat, Class. Quant. Grav, 13, 3129 (1996)]. Surprisingly, the rigid system is consistent with EP but the elastic system breaks EP. Here the historical literature is surveyed and some implications are outlined.

Abstract:We construct an analytic solution to Maxwell's equations that violates global charge conservation, by building on the possibilities demonstrated in [Foundations of Physics 49, 330 (2019)]. The construction is valid for a spacetime containing a temporary singularity and a Maxwellian electrodynamics containing a proposed "topological" axion field. As such, it demonstrates that although "physics breaks down" at a singularity, the physical laws on the spacetime still impose constraints on what can happen. Further, the concepts of transformation optics can be applied to show that our specific mathematical solution has a much wider applicability.

Abstract:Quantum electrodynamics (QED) is considered the most accurate theory in the history of science. However, this precision is based on a single experimental value: the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron (g-factor). An examination of the history of QED reveals that this value was obtained in a very suspicious way. These suspicions include the case of Karplus & Kroll, who admitted to having lied in their presentation of the most relevant calculation in the history of QED. As we will demonstrate in this paper, the Karplus & Kroll affair was not an isolated case, but one in a long series of errors, suspicious coincidences, mathematical inconsistencies and renormalized infinities swept under the rug.

Testing Lorentz Invariance using Zeeman Transitions in Atomic Fountains

Abstract:Lorentz Invariance (LI) is the founding postulate of Einstein's 1905 theory of relativity, and therefore at the heart of all accepted theories of physics. It characterizes the invariance of the laws of physics in inertial frames under changes of velocity or orientation. This central role, and indications from unification theories hinting toward a possible LI violation, have motivated tremendous experimental efforts to test LI. A comprehensive theoretical framework to describe violations of LI has been developed over the last decade: the Lorentz violating Standard Model Extension (SME). It allows a characterization of LI violations in all fields of present day physics using a large (but finite) set of parameters which are all zero when LI is satisfied. All classical tests (e.g. Michelson-Morley or Kennedy-Thorndike experiments) can be analyzed in the SME, but it also allows the conception of new types of experiments, not thought of previously. We have carried out such a conceptually new LI test, by comparing particular atomic transitions (particular orientations of the involved nuclear spins) in the $^{133}$Cs atom using a cold atomic fountain clock. This allows us to test LI in a previously largely unexplored region of the SME parameter space, corresponding to first measurements of four proton parameters and an improvement by 11 and 12 orders of magnitude on the determination of four others. In spite of the attained accuracies, and of having extended the search into a new region of the SME, we still find no indication of LI violation.

Abstract:In a recent paper, PNAS, 118, e1921529118 (2021), it was argued that while the standard definition of conservation laws in quantum mechanics, which is of a statistical character, is perfectly valid, it misses essential features of nature and it can and must be revisited to address the issue of conservation/non-conservation in individual cases. Specifically, in the above paper an experiment was presented in which it can be proven that in some individual cases energy is not conserved, despite being conserved statistically. It was felt however that this is worrisome, and that something must be wrong if there are individual instances in which conservation doesn't hold, even though this is not required by the standard conservation law. Here we revisit that experiment and show that although its results are correct, there is a way to circumvent them and ensure individual case conservation in that situation. The solution is however quite unusual, challenging one of the basic assumptions of quantum mechanics, namely that any quantum state can be prepared, and it involves a time-holistic, double non-conservation effect. Our results bring new light on the role of the preparation stage of the initial state of a particle and on the interplay of conservation laws and frames of reference. We also conjecture that when such a full analysis of any conservation experiment is performed, conservation is obeyed in every individual case.

The two-spin enigma: from the helium atom to quantum ontology

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to provide a novel approach and justification of the idea that classical physics and quantum physics can neither function nor even be conceived one without the other - in line with ideas attributed to e.g. Niels Bohr or Lev Landau. Though this point of view may go against current common wisdom, we will show that it perfectly fits with empirical evidence, and can be maintained without giving up physical realism. In order to place our arguments in a convenient historical perspective, we will proceed as if we were following the path of a police investigation, about the demise, or vanishing, of some valuable properties of the two electrons in the helium atom. We will start from experimentally based evidence in order to analyse and explain physical facts, moving cautiously from a classical to a quantum description, without mixing them up. The overall picture will be that the physical properties of microscopic systems are quantized, as initially shown by Planck and Einstein, and they are also contextual, i.e. that they can be given a physical sense only by embedding a microscopic system within a macroscopic measurement context.

Abstract:Investigations of possible violations of the Pauli exclusion principle represent critical tests of the microscopic space-time structure and properties. Space-time noncommutativity provides a class of universality for several quantum gravity models. In this context the VIP-2 lead experiment sets the strongest bounds, searching for the Pauli exclusion principle violating atomic transitions in lead, excluding the θ-Poincaré noncommutative quantum gravity models far above the Planck scale for nonvanishing θ_{μν} electriclike components, and up to 6.9×10^{-2} Planck scales if θ_{0i}=0.
