Abstract:Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is extremely urgent with their increasing decommission. In this work, eutectic molten salts of LiOH–Li2CO3 used as lithium sources for direct regeneration of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 were developed. Based on the phase diagram of LiOH and Li2CO3, the effects of different lithium sources on material regeneration have been investigated. The cathode materials regenerated with eutectic molten salts have high capacity, good cycling performance, and rate performance. The discharge capacities during the 1st and 200th cycles at 1 C are 146.3 and 130.3 mA h g–1, respectively, and the capacity retention rate reaches 89.06%. Using the combined X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, the original layered structure of spent cathode materials was restored. Therefore, the eutectic molten salt of LiOH–Li2CO3 is feasible for direct regeneration of spent cathode materials. This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper The paper aims to address the regeneration of cathode materials (LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, NCM523) from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Specifically, the research team proposes a method based on the eutectic molten salts method for directly regenerating spent cathode materials and validates the effectiveness of this method. ### Summary of Main Content 1. **Background**: - With the widespread use of electronic devices, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles, the amount of discarded lithium-ion batteries is rapidly increasing. - If not properly treated, spent lithium-ion batteries can cause environmental pollution and waste valuable metal resources. 2. **Existing Methods**: - Currently, common methods for recycling cathode materials include pyrometallurgical processes, hydrometallurgical processes, and direct regeneration. - Pyrometallurgical processes require high-temperature smelting and multi-step separation, which are energy-intensive and may produce alloy products; hydrometallurgical processes, although milder, are complex and may release harmful gases. 3. **Research Innovations**: - A new method based on LiOH-Li2CO3 eutectic molten salts is proposed for directly regenerating spent NCM523 cathode materials. - The eutectic molten salts form a liquid state at 433°C, which can provide lithium ions to repair the lithium deficiency in the cathode materials. 4. **Experimental Results**: - The regenerated cathode materials exhibit good electrochemical performance, with an initial discharge capacity of 146.3 mAh/g and maintaining 130.3 mAh/g after 200 cycles, achieving a capacity retention rate of 89.06%. - Structural analysis shows that the regenerated cathode materials restore their original layered structure, indicating that this method can effectively repair spent cathode materials. ### Conclusion The LiOH-Li2CO3 eutectic molten salts method successfully regenerates spent NCM523 cathode materials. This method is characterized by high safety, non-toxicity, low energy consumption, and suitability for industrial production.
