Abstract:Natural diamonds were (and are) formed (thousands of million years ago) in the upper mantle of Earth in metallic melts at temperatures of 900–1,400 °C and at pressures of 5–6 GPa (refs. 1,2). Diamond is thermodynamically stable under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions as per the phase diagram of carbon3. Scientists at General Electric invented and used a high-pressure and high-temperature apparatus in 1955 to synthesize diamonds by using molten iron sulfide at about 7 GPa and 1,600 °C (refs. 4–6). There is an existing model that diamond can be grown using liquid metals only at both high pressure and high temperature7. Here we describe the growth of diamond crystals and polycrystalline diamond films with no seed particles using liquid metal but at 1 atm pressure and at 1,025 °C, breaking this pattern. Diamond grew in the subsurface of liquid metal composed of gallium, iron, nickel and silicon, by catalytic activation of methane and diffusion of carbon atoms into and within the subsurface regions. We found that the supersaturation of carbon in the liquid metal subsurface leads to the nucleation and growth of diamonds, with Si playing an important part in stabilizing tetravalently bonded carbon clusters that play a part in nucleation. Growth of (metastable) diamond in liquid metal at moderate temperature and 1 atm pressure opens many possibilities for further basic science studies and for the scaling of this type of growth.

Abstract:Bulk material of nano-polycrystalline diamond is synthesized by independently developed two-stage large cavity static high-pressure device through the direct transformation from graphite to diamond under ultra-high pressure and high temperature.The synthesis pressure is about 17GPa and temperature is about 2300℃.Micro X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the graphite has been transformed into cubic phase diamond.The scanning electron microscopic picture and whole spectrum fitting analysis of X-ray shows that the dimension of synthesized diamond crystal is about 16nm.The Vickers hardness of the sample measured by the indentation method is above 100GPa.

Abstract:Pure-phase bulk polycrystalline diamonds are prepared through direct phase transition at ultrahigh pressure and high temperature.The phase composition and microstructure of the pure-phase bulk polycrystalline diamonds are studied by SEM,XRD and Raman spectrum.It is found that with different raw materials and different conditions,diamond samples have different colors and different grain sizes but they are all pure-phase polycrystalline diamonds.The average grain sizes for yellowtransparent and green samples are about 25 nm and 35 μm,respectively.The size of synthesized diamond blocks is φ6 mm × 6 mm.The Vicker's hardness of yellow-transparent polycrystalline diamond,HV,is 130-270 GPa at the load of 3N.According to China National Quality Supervision & Inspection Center for Abrasives,the abrasion ratio of yellow-transparent sample is 1.658 × 106,which is 25 times higher than that of commercial Co-based PCD used on oil bits.TG/DSC shows that the thermal stability of the yellow-transparent sample is almost the same as that of carat-level single-crystal diamond.Contrast grinding test,using NPD to grind against carat-level single-crystal diamond,shows that the abrasion ratio for the nano-structured polycrystalline diamond is 2.5,which demonstrates that the abrasion performance of NPD is much better than that of carat-level single-crystal diamond.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials have exceptional properties that make them attractive for a variety of technological applications. Here, we report on the use of diamondoids (diamond-like, saturated hydrocarbons) as promising precursors for laser-induced high-pressure, high-temperature diamond synthesis. The lowest pressure and temperature (P-T) conditions that yielded diamond were 12 GPa (at ~2000 K) and 900 K (at ~20 GPa), respectively. This represents a substantially reduced transformation barrier compared with diamond synthesis from conventional (hydro)carbon allotropes, owing to the similarities in the structure and full sp3 hybridization of diamondoids and bulk diamond. At 20 GPa, diamondoid-to-diamond conversion occurs rapidly within <19 μs. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that once dehydrogenated, the remaining diamondoid carbon cages reconstruct themselves into diamond-like structures at high P-T. This study is the first successful mapping of the P-T conditions and onset timing of the diamondoid-to-diamond conversion and elucidates the physical and chemical factors that facilitate diamond synthesis.

Abstract:The transformation pathways of carbon at high pressures are of broad interest for synthesis of novel materials and for revealing the Earth's geological history. We have applied large plastic shear on graphite in rotational anvils to form hexagonal and nanocrystalline cubic diamond at extremely low pressures of 0.4 and 0.7 GPa, which are 50 and 100 times lower than the transformation pressures under hydrostatic compression and well below the phase equilibrium. Large shearing accompanied with pressure elevation to 3 GPa also leads to formation of a new orthorhombic diamond phase. Our results demonstrate new mechanisms and new means for plastic shear-controlled material synthesis at drastically reduced pressures, enabling new technologies for material synthesis. The results indicate that the micro-diamonds found in the low pressure-temperature crust could have formed during a large shear producing event, such as tectonic rifting and continued plate collision, without the need to postulate subduction to the mantle.

Abstract:Nano-crystalline diamond (NCD) films on silicon were synthesized at a low temperature of 450–550 °C and a low pressure of ∼7 Torr by a hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) in a mixture of CH4 and H2. The synthesis process included pretreatment, nucleation, growth and in situ annealing steps. The Si wafers were ultrasonically pretreated in a suspension of acetone and diamond powder (20–40 μm in diameter). It was found that the key parameter to obtain smooth NCD films by conventional HFCVD without Ar was the high nucleation density (ND). Optimal ultrasonic pretreatment with coarser diamond powder and nucleation at 2.5% CH4 greatly increased the ND to about 1.5×1011 cm−2. The NCD films with average grain sizes in the range of 40–70 nm, thickness less than 500 nm and surface roughness of ∼19 nm were grown at 1.5% CH4, 550 °C and 7 Torr, their optical transmittance in the near infrared (NIR) range was as high as 85%.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis of optically transparent, mesoporous, monolithic diamond from periodic mesoporous carbon CMK-8 at a pressure of 21 GPa. The phase transformation is already complete at a mild synthesis temperature of 1,300 degrees C without the need of a catalyst. Surprisingly, the diamond is obtained as a mesoporous material despite the extreme pressure. X-ray diffraction, SEM, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Z-contrast experiments suggest that the mesoporous diamond is composed of interconnected diamond nanocrystals having diameters around 5-10 nm. The Brunauer Emmett Teller surface area was determined to be 33 m(2) g(-1) according Kr sorption data. The mesostructure is diminished yet still detectable when the diamond is produced from CMK-8 at 1,600 degrees C and 21 GPa. The temperature dependence of the porosity indicates that the mesoporous diamond exists metastable and withstands transformation into a dense form at a significant rate due to its high kinetic inertness at the mild synthesis temperature. The findings point toward ultrahard porous materials with potential as mechanically highly stable membranes.

Abstract:AbstractIn this article, we report a new route to synthesize diamond by converting “solid” carbon nanofibers with a Spark Plasma Sintering system under low temperature and pressure (even at atmospheric pressure). Well-crystallized diamond crystals are obtained at the tips of the carbon nanofibers after sintering at 1500 °C and atmospheric pressure. Combining with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron-energy loss spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy observations, we propose the conversion mechanism as follows: the disorder “solid” carbon nanofibers → well crystallined carbon nanofibers → bent graphitic sheets → onion-liked rings → diamond single crystal → the bigger congregated diamond crystal. It is believed that the plasma generated by low-voltage, vacuum spark, via a pulsed DC in Spark Plasma Sintering process, plays a critical role in the low temperature and low pressure diamond formation. This Spark Plasma Sintering process may provide a new route for diamond synthesis in an economical way to a large scale.

Abstract:We report the catalyst-free synthesis of monolithic mesoporous nanopolycrystalline diamond from periodic mesoporous carbon at pressures between 15 and 21 GPa and a temperature of 1300 degrees C. We investigated the pressure-dependence of the porosity with 3-dimensional electron tomography. We have observed that surface areas increase from 56 to 90, 138 m(2) g(-1), and porosities increase from 10, 24, to 33% for materials produced at 15, 18, and 21 GPa, respectively. The increased porosity at higher pressure may be due to the earlier onset of the nucleation of diamond at higher pressure. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc.

Abstract:The relation was investigated between the compressive stress, the substrate temperature and the microstructure of amorphous carbon films deposited from the plasma stream of a cathodic vacuum are with a curved magnetic filter. A pressure-temperature phase diagram is presented in which the results of a number of depositions at various substrate bias levels and temperatures are plotted. The microstructure of each film was determined by electron energy loss spectroscopy and electron diffraction. The diagram shows clear regions in which sp2 and sp3 material is formed, together with a transitional region of material of mixed character, along the Berman Simon phase boundary between diamond and graphite. The structure of tetrahedral amorphous networks, of which the sp3 bonded material is an example, was studied using an approach based on the properties of common structural fragments. Important features of the radial distribution function could be understood in this way. The effect of compressive stress on refractive index is also discussed.

The synthesized nanocrystals have tunable diameters between 50 and 200 nm. The nanocrystals are dispersible in organic solvents such as acetone and are isotropic in nature as seen by dynamic light scattering.

Abstract:Abstract The combination of the unique properties of diamond and the prospects for its high-technology applications urges the search for new solvents–catalysts for the synthesis of diamonds with rare and unusual properties. Here we report the synthesis of diamond from melts of 15 rare-earth metals (REM) at 7.8 GPa and 1800–2100 °C. The boundary conditions for diamond crystallization and the optimal parameters for single crystal diamond synthesis are determined. Depending on the REM catalyst, diamond crystallizes in the form of cube–octahedrons, octahedrons and specific crystals bound by tetragon–trioctahedron and trigon–trioctahedron faces. The synthesized diamonds are nitrogen-free and belong to the rare type II, indicating that the rare-earth metals act as both solvent–catalysts and nitrogen getters. It is found that the REM catalysts enable synthesis of diamond doped with group IV elements with formation of impurity–vacancy color centers, promising for the emerging quantum technologies. Our study demonstrates a new field of application of rare-earth metals.

Abstract:The pressure-volume relationship of nano-size diamond was studied at pressures up to 85 GPa. In-situ, monochromatic x-ray experiments, were performed in a diamond-anvil-cell, in a medium that provided pseudohydrostatic pressure conditions. Individual peaks were fitted using the Birch-Murnaghan equation-of-state, providing different compressibilities for the surface layer (expanded structure with longer interatomic distances) and the core of the nano-size diamond particles.

Abstract:Observation of single-crystal diamond growth in thin films obtained from the rf decomposition of a CH4/Ar plasma is reported. The films were deposited on Si substrates which were kept at 20 °C. Polycrystalline diamond grains are seen over the entire film. Single-crystal diffraction patterns obtained from larger grains all show {111} twinning.

Abstract:Diamond have been deposited rapidly under low pressures (<0.1 Torr) via hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) on either scratched or mirror-smooth single crystalline silicon and titanium with nucleation densities of 109-1011 /cm2. The nucleation density increases with the pressure decreases. Hydrogen and methane were used as the gaseous source. Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM ) were used to analyze the obtained films. This result breaks through the limit that diamond film can only be synthesized above 10 Torr, showing a promising prospect that, as is essential for heteroepitaxia1 growth of monocrystal1ine diamond films, diamond film can be easily nucleated on unscratched substrate via Hot Filament CVD.
High-Pressure Synthesis and Characterization of Ge-Doped Single Crystal Diamond

Abstract:Here we report on successful synthesis of Ge-doped single crystal diamond at high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) conditions of 7.0 GPa and 1500–1900 °C from an Mg–Ge–C system. The systematic study of diamond crystallization processes reveals that addition of Ge to the Mg–C system suppresses the intensity of diamond spontaneous nucleation enabling synthesis of relatively large (2–3 mm) diamond crystals via seeded growth. Temperature is found to be a key factor controlling diamond crystallization mechanisms, morphological characteristics, and optical properties of the crystals. It is established that the diamond growth rate depends almost exponentially on the temperature increasing from 3.3 μm/h at 1500 °C to 4.2 mm/h at 1900 °C. Spectroscopic characterization of the synthesized diamonds reveals the abundance of the 2.06 eV Ge–V centers in the photoluminescence spectra confirming successful doping of the diamonds with germanium. The feasibility of the Mg–Ge–C system for growing bulk low-strain diamond doped with isotopically enriched germanium is demonstrated. The isotopic shift of the zero-phonon lines of the 2.06 eV center and the newly observed 1.747 eV center is found, proving the involvement of germanium atoms in the structure of the corresponding defects.

Abstract:Thermobaric formation of carbon solvent alloys under high pressures of 4–6 GPa and at temperatures of 1200–1300°C is used to grow structurally perfect diamond single crystals in the region of thermodynamic stability. It is shown that the formation of samples with minimum values of porosity in the range from 2.49 to 4.50% ensures a stable distribution of elements over the growth volume even in the presence of large differences in the density of elements. For comparison, the results of experiments on the formation of solvent alloys by the methods of powder metallurgy and direct isostatic pressing with subsequent sintering and by the methods of hot pressing of powders are given. It is shown that the samples obtained by classical methods have relatively large final porosity values and cannot be used in the future as carbon solvent alloys during directed growth of diamond single crystals at high pressures and temperatures.

Abstract:Single crystals of diamond up to 18 mm in thickness have been grown by microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition at gas pressures of up to 350 torr. Growth rates of up to 165 mu m/h at 300 torr at high power density have been achieved. The processes were evaluated by optical emission spectroscopy. The high-quality single-crystal diamond grown at optimized conditions was characterized by UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The measurements reveal a direct relationship between residual absorption and nitrogen content in the gas chemistry. Fabrication of high quality single-crystal diamond at higher growth rates should be possible with improved reactor design that allows still higher gas synthesis pressures.

Abstract:Microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) is the established technique to produce high quality single crystal diamond (SCD). While typical pressures for SCD growth regimes in methane-hydrogen plasma are currently within 100–300 Torr, a transition to much high pressures promises enhanced growth rates. Here, we report on successful SCD synthesis by MPCVD in CH4-H2 gas mixtures at pressures up to 600 Tорр. A strong change of the plasma shape and volume (the latter shrinks by 10 times at fixed MW power) with pressure rise from 100 to 600 Torr was observed, still keeping the plasma stable. The record high absorbed MW power density of ≈1800 W/cm3 was achieved at 600 Torr. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was used for the plasma analysis via monitoring emission intensities of radicals Hα, C2 and CH. The gas temperature Tg determined from analysis of rotational fine structure of OES Swan transitions of dimer C2 (516 nm) turned out to be essentially constant ∼ 3100 ± 150 K over the pressure range explored. The diamond growth rate is found to increase by an order of magnitude with pressure to achieve 57 μm/h at 500 Torr at relatively low (4%) CH4 concentration, as measured in situ using low-coherence interferometry, but declined at further pressure increase. The produced films were characterized with SEM, XRD, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, and a high/moderate quality of the obtained material was confirmed.
