Abstract:Amorphization of crystalline structures is a ubiquitous phenomenon in metals, ceramics, and intermetallic compounds. Although the amorphous phase generally has a higher Gibbs free energy than its crystalline counterpart, there are many methods by which amorphization can be generated. The requirement to create an amorphous phase from a solid crystalline one is to increase its free energy above a critical level which enables this transition. In this review, our focus is on amorphization induced by mechanical deformation which can be imparted by a variety of means, prominent among which are tribological processes, severe plastic deformation, nanoindentation, shock compression, diamond anvil cell and ball milling/mechanical alloying. The deformation introduces defects into the structure, raising its free energy to the level that it exceeds the one of the amorphous phase, thus propitiating conditions for amorphization. Experimental observations of amorphization in metallic alloys, intermetallic compounds, ionically and covalently bonded materials are presented and discussed. There is also an observation of amorphization in a biological material: it is generated by impact deformation of hydroxyapatite in the mantis shrimp club. We also focus on the fundamental mechanisms of plastic deformation of amorphous materials; this is a closely linked process by which deformation continues, beyond amorphization, in the new phase. Observations and analyses of amorphization are complemented by computational simulations that predict the process of mechanically-induced amorphization and address the mechanisms of this transformation.
Crystallization-aided extraordinary plastic deformation in nanolayered crystalline Cu/amorphous Cu-Zr micropillars

Abstract:Metallic glasses are lucrative engineering materials owing to their superior mechanical properties such as high strength and great elastic strain. However, the Achilles' heel of metallic amorphous materials - low plasticity caused by instantaneous catastrophic shear banding, significantly undercut their structural applications. Here, the nanolayered crystalline Cu/amorphous Cu-Zr micropillars with equal layer thickness spanning from 20-100 nm are uniaxially compressed and it is found that the Cu/Cu-Zr micropillars exhibit superhigh homogeneous deformation (≥ 30% strain) rather than localized shear banding at room temperature. This extraordinary plasticity is aided by the deformation-induced devitrification via absorption/annihilation of abundant dislocations, triggering the cooperative shearing of shear transformation zones in glassy layers, which simultaneously renders the work-softening. The synthesis of such heterogeneous nanolayered structure not only hampers shear band generation but also provides a viable route to enhance the controllability of plastic deformation in metallic glassy composites via deformation-induced devitrification mechanism.

Abstract:Abstract The transformation induced plasticity phenomenon occurs when one phase transforms to another one during plastic deformation, which is usually diffusionless. Here we present elemental partitioning-mediated crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation during quasi-static plastic deformation, in an alloy in form of a Cr-Ni-Co (crystalline)/Zr-Ti-Nb-Hf-Ni-Co (amorphous) nanolaminated composite, where the constitute elements of the two phases have large negative mixing enthalpy. Upon plastic deformation, atomic intermixing occurs between adjacent amorphous and crystalline phases due to extensive rearrangement of atoms at the interfaces. The large negative mixing enthalpy among the constituent elements promotes amorphous phase transformation of the original crystalline phase, which shows different composition and short-range-order structure compared with the other amorphous phase. The reduced size of the crystalline phase shortens mean-free-path of dislocations, facilitating strain hardening. The enthalpy-guided alloy design based on crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation opens up an avenue for the development of crystal-glass composite alloys with ultrahigh strength and large plasticity.

A phase field model for deformation-induced amorphization

Abstract:Amorphization by severe plastic deformation has been observed in various crystalline materials. However, developing a quantitative and comprehensive theory for strain-induced amorphization remains challenging due to the complex nature of microstructural evolutions and deformation mechanisms. We propose a phase field model coupled with elastic-plastic theory to study the strain-induced amorphization in nanocrystalline materials. The plastic behaviors of crystalline phases and amorphous phases are coupled with phase evolutions by finite strain theory through the strain energy. This coupled model enables to quantitatively explore the effects of various defects on formation of amorphous phases such as shear bands. Simulations using our model predict that amorphous nucleation follows the martensitic transformation, and occurs primarily within localized regions of high stress, including shear bands. Our results also indicate an increase in the critical plastic strain for amorphization as the grain size increases. These findings align well with experimental results, validating the proposed model in capturing key features of deformation-induced amorphization. Our work provides valuable insights into deformation-induced amorphization and serves as a basis for developing more quantitative models with complex microscopic mechanisms.

Abstract:Traditionally, the formation of amorphous shear bands in crystalline materials has been undesirable, because shear bands can nucleate voids and act as precursors to fracture. They also form as a final stage of accumulated damage. Only recently were shear bands found to form in undefected crystals, where they serve as the primary driver of plasticity without nucleating voids. Here we have discovered trends in materials properties that determine when amorphous shear bands will form and whether they will drive plasticity or lead to fracture. We have identified the materials systems that exhibit shear-band deformation, and by varying the composition, we were able to switch from ductile to brittle behaviour. Our findings are based on a combination of experimental characterization and atomistic simulations, and they provide a potential strategy for increasing the toughness of nominally brittle materials.

Abstract:As promising composites in engineering applications, amorphous/crystalline nanolaminates have attracted great research interests by its excellent mechanical behaviors recently. In this study, plastic deformations of amorphous Cu50Zr50 and amorphous-Cu50Zr50/crystalline-Cu/amorphous-Cu50Zr50 nanolaminated structures with different crystalline layer thickness under pure shear loading were studied using molecular dynamic simulations. A transition in the plastic deformation mode takes place in the nanolaminated structure from the pure shear banding deformation in the amorphous CuZr to the interactive deformation between interfacial dislocation in the crystalline layer and shear transformation zones (STZs) in the amorphous layer. It is found that the partial dislocation sliding, which is activated by local strain concentration in the amorphous at amorphous/crystalline interface, alleviates and releases the large atomic shear strain concentration in the amorphous. As a result, interfacial dislocation-STZs interaction process prevents the evolution of shear localization at the layer interface and facilitates a more homogeneously plastic deformation in the nanolaminated structure. Besides, the dislocation intersection within a large crystalline layer can cause strain hardening, which provides potentials for the combination between high strength and good plastic deformability at the engineering applications.

Abstract:We comment on the stress-induced amorphization triggered by elastic instability of crystals upon shock loading at extremely high rates. We also discuss the amorphization of immiscible systems, through an evaluation of the positive heat of mixing that external driving forces must overcome to mechanically alloy the immiscible elements into amorphous solutions. These cases serve as examples illustrating the challenges in understanding mechanically driven amorphization.

Abstract:Spatially heterogeneous distribution of active components is key to the diverse shape‐morphing behaviors of biological species and their associated functions. Artificial morphing materials employing similar strategies have widened the design space for advanced functional devices. Typically, the spatial heterogeneity is introduced during the material synthesis/fabrication step and cannot be altered afterward. An approach that allows spatio‐selective programming of crystallinity in a shape‐memory polymer (SMP) by a digital photothermal effect is reported. The light‐patternable crystallinity affects greatly the shape morphing behavior. Consequently, a pre‐stretched 2D film with spatial heterogeneity in crystallinity can morph with time into designable 3D permanent shapes, achieving the 4D transformation. This approach utilizes a reprocessible thermoplastic SMP (polylactide) and the programming relies on a physical phase transformation (crystallization) instead of chemical heterogeneity. This allows repeated erasing and reprogramming using the same material, suggesting a versatile and sustainable means for manufacturing advanced morphing devices.

Abstract:Experiments and atomic-scale simulations suggest that the transmission of plasticity carriers in deforming amorphous-crystalline nanolaminates is mediated by the biphase interface between the amorphous and crystalline layers. In this paper, we present a micromechanics model for these biphase nanolaminates that describes defect interactions through the amorphous-crystalline interface (ACI). The model is based on an effective-temperature framework to achieve a unified description of the slow, configurational atomic rearrangements in both phases when driven out of equilibrium. We show how the second law of thermodynamics constrains the density of defects and the rate of configurational rearrangements, and apply this framework to dislocations in crystalline solids and shear transformation zones (STZs) in amorphous materials. The effective-temperature formulation enables us to interpret the observed movement of dislocations to the ACI and the production of STZs at the interface as a "diffusion" of configurational disorder across the material. We demonstrate favorable agreement with experimental findings reported in (Kim et al., Adv. Funct. Mater., 2011), and demonstrate how the ACI acts as a sink of dislocations and a source of STZs.

Stress-tunable abilities of glass forming and mechanical amorphization

Abstract:Mechanical amorphization, a widely observed phenomenon, has been utilized to synthesize novel phases by inducing disorder through external loading, thereby expanding the realm of glass-forming systems. Empirically, it has been plausible that mechanical amorphization ability consistently correlates with glass-forming ability. However, through a comprehensive investigation in binary, ternary, and quaternary systems combining neutron diffraction, calorimetric experimental approaches and molecular dynamics simulation, we demonstrate that this impression is only partly true and we reveal that the mechanical amorphization ability can be inversely correlated with the glass forming ability in certain cases To provide insights into these intriguing findings, we present a stress-dependent nucleation theory that offers a coherent explanation for both experimental and simulation results. Our study identifies the intensity of mechanical work, contributed by external stress, as the key control parameter for mechanical amorphization, rendering the ability to tune this process. This discovery not only unravels the underlying correlation between mechanical amorphization and glass-forming ability but also provides a pathway for the design and discovery of new amorphous phases with tailored properties.

Abstract:Understanding the deformation mechanism of amorphous polymeric materials is indispensable for their applications but is quite challenging. Here, with amorphous plasticized poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) as a model system, we studied its structural change in situ during uniaxial deformation with ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS). We observed a stretch-induced phase separation behavior characterized by a butterfly scattering pattern in plasticized PVB for the first time. This phase separation, featured by a concentration fluctuation along the stretch direction, is a result of stress–concentration coupling under stretch. The phase size at its formation is around 100 nm, which increases almost linearly with strain. The strain rate has a weak effect on the phase size. This suggests that the elastic deformation of the network, cross-linked by entanglements and hydrogen-bonding clusters, governs the phase size. We proposed a tentative model to explain the deformation behavior of plasticized PVB, where the breaking and reforming of hydrogen bonds, the formation and growth of phase separation against osmotic pressure, and the plastic deformation and rupture of phase structure dissipate a large amount of energy and endow the plasticized PVB with excellent mechanical performance. We believe our findings are general and should be applicable to other amorphous polymers with solvents or plasticizers.

Abstract:<p>Ceramics are easy to break, and very few generic mechanisms are available for improving their mechanical properties, e.g., the 1975-discovered anti-fracture mechanism is strictly limited to zirconia and hafnia. Here we report a general mechanism for achieving high plasticity through liquefaction of ceramics. We further disclose the general material design strategies to achieve this difficult task through entropy-boosted amorphous ceramics (EBACs), enabling fracture-resistant properties that can withstand severe plastic deformation (e.g., over 95%, deformed to a thickness of a few nanometers) while maintaining high hardness and reduced modulus. The findings reported here open a new route to ductile ceramics and many applications.</p>

Abstract:The compressive properties of metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals are not only crucial for their densification process but also key in determining their performance in many applications. We herein investigated the mechanical responses of a classic crystalline MOF, HKUST-1, using in situ compression tests. A serrated flow accompanied by the unique strain avalanches was found in individual and contacting crystals before their final flattening or fracture with splitting cracks. The plastic flow with serrations is ascribed to the dynamic phase mixing due to the progressive and irreversible local phase transition in HKUST-1 crystals, as revealed by molecular dynamics and finite element simulations. Such pressure-induced phase coexistence in HKUST-1 crystals also induces a significant loading-history dependence of their Young's modulus. The observation of plastic avalanches in HKUST-1 crystals here not only expands our current understanding of the plasticity of MOF crystals but also unveils a novel mechanism for the avalanches and plastic flow in crystal plasticity.
