Abstract:The hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol under mild conditions (similar to 340 K) was achieved over Raney Ni catalyst in the aqueous phase. The adsorption-desorption properties of the reactants (phenol and H-2) and the products (cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol) on the Raney Ni catalyst are different in the aqueous phase and the organic phase. The hydrogenation rate of phenol is improved because the Raney Ni catalyst adsorbs more H-2 and phenol in water than in methanol. Meanwhile, the higher uptakes of H-2 and the lower desorption rates for cyclohexanone on the Raney Ni catalyst in the aqueous system result in the further hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone is an important process in both chemical industry and renewable feedstock processing. However, direct hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone under mild conditions over catalysts with high reactivity, selectivity, and facile preparation is still a challenge. In the present study, we report that 99% conversion and 99% selectivity can be achieved over as-prepared Pd/γ-Al2O3 catalyst under the medium of low-pressure CO2 (0.05–0.2 MPa) and H2O at 373 K. According to experiment results, ab initio calculations and in situ high-pressure FTIR measurements indicated enhanced selectivity of cyclohexanone in low-pressure CO2; this result originated from the molecular interaction between cyclohexanone and CO2 and can prevent the further hydrogenation of cyclohexanone. Notably, enhancement of selectivity to cyclohexanone in low-pressure CO2 was also achieved using commercial Pd/γ-Al2O3 and Pd/C catalysts.

Abstract:Transfer hydrogenation is a novel and efficient method to realize the hydrogenation in different chemical reactions and exploring a simple heterogeneous catalyst with high activity is crucial. Ni/CNT was synthesized through a traditional impregnation method, and the detailed physicochemical properties were performed by means of XRD, TEM, XPS, BET, and ICP analysis. Through the screening of loading amounts, solvents, reaction temperature, and reaction time, 20% Ni/CNT achieves an almost complete conversion of phenol after 60 min at 220 °C in the absence of external hydrogen. Furthermore, the catalytic system is carried out on a variety of phenol derivatives for the generation of corresponding cyclohexanols with good to excellent results. The mechanism suggests that the hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone is the first step, while the hydrogenation of cyclohexanone for the generation of cyclohexanol takes place in a successive step. Moreover, Ni/CNT catalyst can be magnetically recovered and reused in the next test for succeeding four times.

Abstract:A series of stable N-doped porous carbon-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles (Ni@CN) were prepared via direct pyrolysis Ni-MOF-74(N), and utilized for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of phenol to cyclohexanol with isopropanol as hydrogen donor. The prepared catalysts were characterized by means of TG, XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and XPS. The effects of preparation and reaction conditions on the CTH performance were investigated. The results found Ni particles of Ni@CN were smaller than that of Ni@C, which reflected N-doping could increase the Ni dispersion. Moreover, electrons can be redistributed with N-doping. These two factors contribute to better catalytic activity. Ni@CN-450 catalyst exhibited 99.3% phenol conversion with 100% cyclohexanol selectivity. Moreover, the catalysts could be recycled and reused easily with the help of magnet and its catalytic performance did not decrease obviously even after five successive cycles.

Abstract:Cyclohexanol is an important intermediate in the synthesis of Nylon-6 and plasticizers. In this work, cobalt oxide nanoparticles (NPs) supported on porous carbon (CoOx@CN) were fabricated by one-pot method and the hybrids could efficiently and selectively hydrogenate phenol to cyclohexanol with a high yield of 98%. The high catalytic performance of CoOx@CN was associate with the high surface area (340m2/g) and uniformly dispersed NPs. Furthurmore, by detailed analysing the relationship between catalytic activity and catalysts composition, it clearly indicated that the Co3O4 in CoOx@CN played an important role for the adsorption and activation of phenol and the in situ gernerated Co was responsible for hydrogen adsorption and dissociation. These findings provide a fundamental insight into the real active sites in hydrogenation of phenol using Co-based catalysts.
Highly Selective Hydrogenation of Phenols to Cyclohexanone Derivatives Using a Palladium@N-Doped Carbon/SiO 2 Catalyst

Abstract:A new palladium-based heterogeneous material was synthesized by means of immobilization of Pd(OAc)2/1,10-phenanthroline on commercially available SiO2 and subsequent pyrolysis at 600 °C for 2 h in air, namely, a Pd@N-doped carbon/SiO2 catalyst. The obtained catalyst was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, and was effectively applied in the highly selective hydrogenation of phenols to give the corresponding cyclohexanone derivatives with 93–98% yields at 100 °C under 0.4 MPa H2 in EtOH. It was demonstrated that introducing nitrogen could effectively promote the Pd dispersion and enhance the electronic interaction of Pd, both of which facilitate the improvement of the catalytic activity and selectivity. The likely reaction pathway was outlined to elucidate the selective hydrogenation mechanism according to experimental results.

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow bimetallic NiCo/MgxNiyO catalysts were constructed by assembling NiMgCo layered double hydroxide (LDH) platelets on zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), followed by subsequent calcination and reduction. The three-level hierarchical structure of NiCo/MgxNiyO catalysts, including the hollow structure, nanolamellar structure and NiCo alloy particles, showed a significant enhancement on the catalytic activity of NiCo/MgxNiyO in the hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol. The confined environment of the lamellar structure may strengthen the interaction between the active species and support, avoiding the agglomeration, sintering and leaching of the NiCo active species, thus facilitating the stability. The optimal catalyst NiCo/MgxNiyO(10) showed an excellent catalytic performance with 99.9 % conversion and 99.9 % selectivity for cyclohexanol, and featured with a highest TOF value of 588 h−1 compared with the reported Ni-based catalysts. Detailed characterizations have demonstrated that the combination of the hollow structure and the confined effect would benefit the catalytic performance. Moreover, this non-precious metal catalyst can be magnetically separated, and recycled for at least 6 times. This approach provides a valuable guidance for the design and preparation of the non-precious metal catalysts for industrial applications.

Hydrogenation of Phenol to Cyclohexanol and Cyclohexanone on ZrO 2 -Supported Ni-Co Alloy in Water

Abstract:ZrO 2 -supported Ni and Ni-Co alloy catalysts were synthesized by co-precipitation method and tested for the hydrogenation of phenol in aqueous phase. Cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone are dominatingly generated on all the catalysts, and the deoxygenation products are minor. The Ni-Co alloy gives higher phenol conversion and the total yield of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone compared to the metallic Ni. This is attributed to high metal dispersion due to the formation of Ni-Co alloy and the synergetic effect of Ni and Co in the alloy. ZrO 2 -supported Ni-Co alloy with the Ni/Co atomic ratio of 1 and the metal mass loading of 15% possesses the best performance. The total yield of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone reaches 91.3% with the cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone molar ratio of 2.79. The phase composition of ZrO 2 -supported Ni-Co alloy remains stable during recycling, while the slight sintering of ZrO 2 and Ni-Co alloy particles can account for the catalyst deactivation. It has also been found that the presence of water may facilitate the keto-enol tautomerization and stabilize the ketone intermediates, leading to higher cyclohexanone yield than using n-octane as solvent.

Abstract:Cyclohexanone is an important intermediate in the manufacture of polyamides in chemical industry, but direct selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone under mild conditions is a challenge. We report here a catalyst made of Pd nanoparticles supported on a mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride, Pd@mpg-C3N4, which was shown to be highly active and promoted the selective formation of cyclohexanone under atmospheric pressure of hydrogen in aqueous media without additives. Conversion of 99% and a selectivity higher than 99% were achieved within 2 h at 65 degrees C. The reaction can be accelerated at higher temperature, but even at room temperature, 99% conversion and 96% selectivity could still be obtained. The generality of the Pd@mpg-C3N4 catalyst for this reaction was demonstrated by selective hydrogenation of other hydroxylated aromatic compounds with similar performance.

Abstract:The liquid phase selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone has been investigated over polymeric mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) supported Pd catalysts (Pd@mpg-C3N4). This Pd@mpg-C3N4 is shown to be highly active and promotes the selective formation of cyclohexanone (similar to 99%), an industrially important compound, in a "one-step'' method. The effects of different variables like solvent, reaction temperature, catalyst texture and catalyst pre-treatment are presented and discussed. The different adsorption capacity of mpg-C3N4 between the phenol and cyclohexanone is suggested to strongly promote the chemoselective reduction of phenol to cyclohexanone and avoid the deep hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol. The hydrogenation kinetics has been adequately represented by a standard pseudo-first-order approximation, and isotopic tracing study and the transition state calculation were applied for the discussion of the possible reaction mechanism.

Abstract:The development of catalysts with high activity and selectivity is of paramount importance for the industrial conversion of biomass. One crucial reaction in this process is the hydrogenation of phenol, a key component of phenolic resins in biomass, into cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to examine phenol hydrogenation reaction mechanisms over a platinum (Pt) nanocluster encapsulated in the H-MFI zeolite, e.g., Pt6@H-MFI. Various anchoring positions of the Pt6 nanocluster on the H-MFI framework and the adsorption configurations of phenol on the Pt6@H-MFI were firstly determined. DFT calculation results demonstrate that, compared to the Pt surface, the Pt6@H-MFI catalyst shows high hydrogenation activity with a notable selectivity towards cyclohexanol. The pathway leading to the formation of cyclohexanol is both kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable over the pathway leading to the formation of cyclohexanone. The present work offers significant contributions to the strategic development of catalysts consisting of metal nanoclusters encapsulated within zeolite frameworks.

Abstract:Zeolites (Hβ, HZSM-5 and HM), TiO 2 and ZrO 2 supported NiCo alloy catalysts were tested for the hydrodeoxygenation of phenol in aqueous phase. It has been found that the catalyst acidity remarkably influences the catalyst activity and the product distribution. Zeolites supported catalysts give much higher yield of the deoxygenated products (mainly benzene and cyclohexane) than NiCo/TiO 2 and NiCo/ZrO 2 , where cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone are dominating. Associated with NH 3 -TPD, we suggest that the catalyst acidity promotes the hydrodeoxygenation. Hβ zeolite supported NiCo alloy is more active than others, attributed to its higher metal dispersion and more acid sites. Therein, the Hβ zeolite calcined at 750 o C has moderate acidity, and its supported NiCo alloy catalyst (NiCo/HB-750) shows the best performance. Under a suitable reaction condition, the phenol conversion and the total yield of deoxygenated products reaches 96.8% and 94.5% on NiCo/HB-750, respectively.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolic compounds is a promising strategy for bio-oil upgradation to produce high-value chemicals and fuels. Herein, a series of NiFeAlO x catalysts prepared by a co-precipitation method were applied in HDO of guaiacol as a typical model compound. The characterization results revealed that the catalyst with Ni/Fe/Al ratio of 3/0.5/2.5 possessed developed textural properties, small metal particles, abundant oxygen vacancies and acid sites. HDO of guaiacol occurred in two pathways with different hydrogen sources : the direct hydrogenation of benzene ring to 2-methoxycyclohexanone and the further hydrogenolysis and dehydration of intermediates to cyclohexane at 260 °C in n -hexane under H 2 for 6 h, while demethoxylation affording phenol followed by hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol at 220 °C in isopropanol under N 2 for 2 h. The different product composition results from the type of reactive H species, where active hydrogen species are hydrogen radicals using H 2 as the hydrogen source and hydrogen ions with opposite charges using isopropanol as the H-donor solvent, respectively. The Ni 3 Fe 0.5 Al 2.5 O x catalyst maintained good performance after five recycle experiments with a slight decrease in the conversion of guaiacol. Moreover, the catalyst showed excellent universality for selective HDO of other phenolic compounds to cycloalkanes or cycloalkanols.

Abstract:A highly dispersed Ni3P/HZSM-5 catalyst was prepared by deposition-precipitation of Ni species followed by electroless plating and thermal treatment, and characterized by means of XRD, ICP, N2 physical adsorption, TEM, XPS, NH3-TPD, and CO chemisorption. Electroless plating reaction takes place in an aqueous solution under mild conditions, facilitating the high dispersion of the formed Ni3P particles. XRD measurements illustrated the lamellar nickel phyllosilicate was produced at the first step of deposition-precipitation, amorphous Ni-P was formed in the subsequent electroless plating, and highly dispersed Ni3P crystallites were generated in thermal treatment. TEM observation demonstrated that the average particle size of Ni3P crystallites in the prepared Ni3P/HZSM-5 catalyst was 4.3 nm. Bifunctional Ni3P/HZSM-5 was investigated in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolic compounds, including phenol, m-cresol, and guaiacol. Ni3P/HZSM-5 exhibited high catalytic performance in HDO with enhanced hydrogenation and dehydration pathway.

Abstract:Developing viable transition metal catalysts for phenol hydrogenation is challenging due to their inherent instability, which impedes the identification of true active catalytic species and their reusability. To overcome this issue, we employed a self-supporting strategy to prevent catalyst clusterization. This approach resulted in the formation of NHC-Rh coordination assemblies, which serve as robust and selective solid molecular catalysts for phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanols in water under mild conditions. Remarkably, these solid catalysts exhibit exceptional stability, allowing for up to 9 consecutive reuse cycles without compromising their activity or selectivity. This advancement presents a promising and sustainable solution for the future production of valuable cyclohexanols in the industry.

Abstract:A highly stable Pd-loaded N-doped carbon catalyst (ACNpd) for phenol hydrogenation was prepared from chitosan by hydrothermal carbonization. ACNpd does not require a reduction step before catalytic use due to the Pd in the as-prepared catalyst mainly exists in the form of Pd0 (80%). The carbon support involves N-containing groups such as pyridinic nitrogen and pyrrolic nitrogen, which could provide basic sites to adsorb phenol effectively. The as-fabricated ACNpd shows high catalytic performance with turnover frequency (TOF) of 29.34 h−1. Accordingly, a phenol conversion of 100% and a cyclohexanone selectivity of 99.1% are achieved in 5 h at 100 °C and 1 MPa H2. This outstanding performance is attributed to the synergetic effects of the Pd particles, the N-functional groups, and the Lewis acid sites on the support. The carbon support presents intrinsic Lewis acid sites due to its electrophilicity, and Pd doping further increases the strength of such acid sites as it causes electron-deficient structural features. Moreover, the Lewis acid sites inhibit the over-hydrogenation from cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol. This study provides new insights into the application of functional biomass-based carbon materials as catalyst supports.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenations of lignin-derived phenolic compounds represent essential processes in the chemical industry, especially for production of a multitude of fine chemicals. However, selective hydrogenation of phenolic compounds in water phase suffers from low conversion. Here we report a catalyst of well-dispersed Ru clusters fixed in N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon spheres (Ru@N-CS) for enhanced cyclohexanol productivity in phenol hydrogenation at mild aqueous condition. This superhydrophobicity carbon spheres appear to selectively allow diffusion of phenol and hydrogen molecules to the electron-rich coordination unsaturated Ru active sites, while confining the reactants there to enhance its reaction probability. The Ru@N-CS catalyst can selectively hydrogenate phenol at 80 C-o and 0.5 MPa of H-2 in 30 min in aqueous medium with phenol conversions of 100% and similar to 100% cyclohexanol selectivity, corresponding to cyclohexanol productivity up to 471 per g of Ru per minute. The TOF value is up to 9980 h(-1), which 14 times more than Ru nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon hollow spheres (Ru/N-CS). This work provides an important catalytic system for upgrading of bio-oil into value-added chemicals under mild aqueous-phase.

In addition,Ni@Silicalite-1 showed outstanding stability in 200 h long run with95.5% conversion and 74.2% aromatics yield without obvious deactivation.This work provided a novel insight into tuning hydroxyl hydrogenolysisof phenolics by designing metal@zeolite catalysts with different microenvironmentsand ultrasmall metal nanoparticles. Ni@Silicalite-1catalyzed vapor m-cresolto toluene through hydroxyl hydrogenolysis rather than phenyl ringhydrogenation even below 300 degrees C.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of lignin-derived phenol to KA oil (the mixture of cyclohexanone (K) and cyclohexanol (A)) is attractive yet challenging in the sustainable upgrading of biomass derivatives under mild conditions. Traditional supported metal catalysts have been widely studied but the active components on supports often exhibit low recyclability due to their instability under experimental conditions. Here we show fabricating ultrasmall Pt/NiO in the pores of chromium terephthalate MIL-101 as catalysts for hydrogenation of phenol. Impressively, Pt/NiO@MIL-101 achieves catalytic phenol hydrogenation to KA oils of tunable K/A ratios and good reusability under room temperature and atmospheric hydrogen pressure, superior to contrast Pt@MIL-101 and Pt/NiO samples. Such excellent performance mainly originates from the effective adsorption and activation of phenol by coordinatively unsaturated Cr sites and H 2 activation on ultrasmall Pt/NiO as well as its effective spillover to the adsorbed phenol over Cr sites for hydrogenation reaction. Substantially, such catalyst also displays the excellent performances for hydrogenation of phenol's derivatives under mild conditions.
