Abstract:The intrinsic limitations of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with regard to safety, cost, and the availability of raw materials have promoted research on so-called "post-LIBs". The recent intense research of post-LIBs provides an invaluable lesson that existing electrode materials used in LIBs may not perform as well in post-LIBs, calling for new material designs compliant with emerging batteries based on new chemistries. One promising approach in this direction is the development of materials with intercalated water or organic molecules, as these materials demonstrate superior electrochemical performance in emerging battery systems. The enlarged ionic channel dimensions and effective shielding of the electrostatic interaction between carrier ions and the lattice host are the origins of the observed electrochemical performance. Moreover, these intercalants serve as interlayer pillars to sustain the framework for prolonged cycles. Representative examples of such intercalated materials applied to batteries based on Li+, Na+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ ions and supercapacitors are considered, along with their impact in materials research.

Abstract:An aqueous catholyte for Li-ion redox batteries employing reversible Br-2/Br- redox reactions is investigated. The catholyte uses lithium bromide as the active material and potassium bromide aqueous solution as the supporting electrolyte. By tuning the acidity of the catholyte, stable cyclability of the cell has been achieved at room temperature with a discharge potential of similar to 3.9 V, a reversible capacity of 290 mA h g(-1), and a specific power density of similar to 1000 W kg(-1). Compared with the catholytes used in conventional redox-flow batteries, the reported catholyte is heavy-metal-free and can be operated in moderate acidity, providing an alternative option for sustainable electrical energy storage.

Abstract:A novel rechargeable K/Br battery is demonstrated for the first time in this work, which exhibits high capacity (up to 400 mAh g−1) and constant operating voltage (at 3.72 V vs K+/K). As a proof of concept, the proposed K/Br battery points to a new pathway for next‐generation rechargeable batteries. The current limited and uneven distribution of lithium resources has stimulated strong motivation to develop new rechargeable batteries that use alternative charge carriers. Potassium‐based batteries are promising candidates for future large‐scale energy storage due to their low cost and high operating voltage. Here for the first time, a rechargeable K/Br battery is reported, which is assembled with a hollow carbon spheres cathode, a K metal anode, and a SOBr2 electrolyte containing AlBr3 and potassium bis‐(fluorosulfonyl)imide. The in situ formed crystalline KBr protective film during discharging plays a significant role in this system. The redox reaction between the KBr film and liquid Br2 at the cathode contributes to the main reversible capacity. K/Br battery exhibits high capacity (up to 400 mAh g‐1) and constant operating voltage (at 3.72 V vs K+/K). As a proof of concept, the K/Br battery demonstrated in this work points to a new pathway for low‐cost and next‐generation rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Despite their potential as conversion-type energy storage technologies, the performance of static lithium-bromide (SLB) batteries has remained stagnant for decades. Progress has been hindered by the intrinsic liquid-liquid redox mode and single-electron transfer of these batteries. Here, we developed a high-performance SLB battery based on the active bromine salt cathode and the two-electron transfer chemistry with a Br − /Br + redox couple by electrolyte tailoring. The introduction of NO 3 − improved the reversible single-electron transition of Br − , and more impressively, the coordinated Cl − anions activated the Br + conversion to provide an additional electron transfer. A voltage plateau was observed at 3.8 V, and the discharge capacity and energy density were increased by 142 and 159% compared to the one-electron reaction benchmark. This two-step conversion mechanism exhibited excellent stability, with the battery functioning for 1000 cycles. These performances already approach the state of the art of currently established Li-halogen batteries. We consider the established two-electron redox mechanism highly exemplary for diversified halogen batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable metal-iodine and metal-bromine batteries have been pursued as potentially effective, low-cost, and mass-producible alternatives to current transition-metal-based batteries due to highly reversible redox and abundant resource. However, several challenges, such as low operability caused by thermodynamic instability of cathode and unsatisfactory cycling stability from shuttle effect, must be overcome before a real breakthrough and their widespread application. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art progress of their energy storage mechanisms and discusses the emerging metal-iodine/bromine batteries including Zn-I2 and Zn-Br2 batteries, Li-I2 and Li-BrCl batteries and other metal-I2 batteries. We show the key issues that current metal-iodine/bromine batteries are facing and, furthermore, some promising solutions proposed during the past few years are highlighted to outline key perspectives for future research in this thriving field.This review systematically classifies the emerging metal-iodine/bromine batteries including Zn-I2 and Zn-Br2 batteries, Li-I2 and Li-BrCl batteries and other metal-I2 batteries. We summarize the state-of-the-art progress of energy storage mechanisms and discusses the main issues currently. Furthermore, some promising solutions proposed during the past few years are highlighted to outline key perspectives for future research in this thriving field.

Abstract:The broad application of lithium-sulfur technology is far from viable unless the obstacles associated with the dissolution of the sulfur cathode and the dendrite-growth related battery failure arising from the use of a metallic lithium anode are addressed. Taking advantage of the highly soluble sulfur species, this work explores the possibility of using redox-active species with highly positive potential to couple with a sulfur anolyte for a redox flow battery. When paired with an aqueous bromide catholyte, a sulfur-bromine (S-Br-2) battery with the desired metal-free characteristic is successfully demonstrated. The battery exhibits a cell voltage exceeding 1.8 V, a specific capacity of similar to 1600 mA h g(-1), coulombic efficiency approaching 100% and decent cycling efficiencies over 100 cycles. A full-liquid flow-through mode is able to be realized with a controlled depth of charge. Moreover, a high energy density can be expected with highly concentrated electrolytes, guaranteeing a promising sustainable energy storage technology candidate for both stationary and mobile applications.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have prospered a rechargeable world, predominantly relying on various metal oxide cathode materials for their abilities to reversibly de-/intercalate lithium-ion, while also serving as lithium sources for batteries. Despite the success of metal oxide, issues including low energy density have raised doubts about their suitability for next-generation lithium batteries. This has sparked interest in metal chlorides, a neglected cathode material family. Metal chlorides show promise with factors like energy density, diffusion coefficient, and compressibility. Unfortunately, challenges like high solubility hamper their utilization. In this review, we highlight the opportunities for metal chlorides in the post-lithium-ion era. Subsequently, we summarize their dissolution challenges. Furthermore, we discuss recent advancements, encompassing liquid-state electrolyte engineering, solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) cooperation, and LiCl-based cathodes. Finally, we provide an outlook on future research directions of metal chlorides, emphasizing electrode fabrication, electrolyte design, the application of SSEs, and the exploration of conversion reactions.

Rechargeable Mg-Br2 Battery with Ultrafast Bromine Chemistry

Abstract:A sustainable society necessitates the support of diversified energy storage systems. Magnesium metal batteries, known for the environmental friendliness, safety of dendrite-less, cost-effective, and high volumetric capacity of magnesium metal, exhibit promising prospects. However, the high charge density of the magnesium ion leads to sluggish ion diffusion in cathodes, posing challenges for developing magnesium metal battery systems with high power and high energy density. Here, inspired by the Hard-Soft-Acid-Base theory, we propose a soft-anion-induced bond weakening strategy to address the diffusion difficulty. The bulky and broadly electron-distributed succinimide ion (SN-) in SN-Mg-Br significantly weakens the Mg-Br bond, promoting rapid magnesium ion transport and enabling ultrafast bromine chemistry, thus realizing a highly rechargeable Mg-Br2 battery prototype. Benefiting from the solubilization of SN-, the Mg-Br2 batteries achieve a high discharge plateau of 2.7 V, a remarkable specific capacity of 326 mAh gBr-1, and an impressive lifespan of 400 cycles. Attributed to the half-half diffusion/adsorption-desorption control process mechanism, the batteries can be well cycled under high-rate charging at 10 C and ultralow temperatures down to -55 °C. This bond weakening strategy may stimulate the development of battery systems with similar high charge density to magnesium ion, toward high power and high energy density, paving the way for sustainable energy storage systems.
An Aqueous Rechargeable Lithium Battery Using Coated Li Metal as Anode

Abstract:New energy industry including electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage in smart grids requires energy storage systems of good safety, high reliability, high energy density and low cost. Here a coated Li metal is used as anode for an aqueous rechargeable lithium battery (ARLB) combining LiMn 2 O 4 as cathode and 0.5 mol l −1 Li 2 SO 4 aqueous solution as electrolyte. Due to the “cross-over” effect of Li + ions in the coating, this ARLB delivers an output voltage of about 4.0 V, a big breakthrough of the theoretic stable window of water, 1.229 V. Its cycling is very excellent with Coulomb efficiency of 100% except in the first cycle. Its energy density can be 446 Wh kg −1 , about 80% higher than that for traditional lithium ion battery. Its power efficiency can be above 95%. Furthermore, its cost is low and safety is much reliable. It provides another chemistry for post lithium ion batteries.
Reversible solid-liquid conversion enabled by self-capture effect for stable non-flow zinc-bromine batteries

Abstract:Non-flow aqueous zinc-bromine batteries without auxiliary components (e.g., pumps, pipes, storage tanks) and ion-selective membranes represent a cost-effective and promising technology for large-scale energy storage. Unfortunately, they generally suffer from serious diffusion and shuttle of polybromide (Br-, Br3 -) due to the weak physical adsorption between soluble polybromide and host carbon materials, which results in low energy efficiency and poor cycling stability. Here, we develop a novel self-capture organic bromine material (1,1′-bis[3-(trimethylammonio)propyl]-4,4′-bipyridinium bromine, NVBr4) to successfully realize reversible solid complexation of bromide components for stable non-flow zinc-bromine battery applications. The quaternary ammonium groups (NV4+ ions) can effectively capture the soluble polybromide species based on strong chemical interaction and realize reversible solid complexation confined within the porous electrodes, which transforms the conventional "liquid-liquid" conversion of soluble bromide components into "liquid-solid" model and effectively suppresses the shuttle effect. Thereby, the developed non-flow zinc-bromide battery provides an outstanding voltage platform at 1.7 V with a notable specific capacity of 325 mAh g-1 NVBr4 (1 A g-1), excellent rate capability (200 mAh g-1 NVBr4 at 20 A g-1), outstanding energy density of 469.6 Wh kg-1 and super-stable cycle life (20000 cycles with 100% Coulombic efficiency), which outperforms most of reported zinc-halogen batteries. Further mechanism analysis and DFT calculations demonstrate that the chemical interaction of quaternary ammonium groups and bromide species is the main reason for suppressing the shuttle effect. The developed strategy can be extended to other halogen batteries to obtain stable charge storage.

Abstract:A LiBr‐enhanced solid electrolyte interphase is created on Li metal via a scalable chemical passivating method. Due to the high adsorption energy and low diffusion barrier toward Li+, LiBr plays a crucial role to inhibit dendritic Li growth. Stable dendrite‐free cycling of a Li‐metal electrode is realized, irrespective of whether ether or carbonate electrolytes are employed. This strategy provides useful theoretical support and practical reference for the development of Li‐metal batteries. Lithium‐metal batteries suffer from short cycle life and poor safety due to uncontrolled dendrite growth at Li anodes. An advanced solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) with homogeneous chemical composition and physical structure holds great promise to address the issues. Herein, a new surface bromination approach is proposed for stabilizing SEI of Li anode via a scalable dip‐coating method. A lithium bromide‐enriched SEI is readily created on Li metal from chemical passivation by bromooctane. In‐situ optical microscopy reveals the crucial role of LiBr in inhibiting dendritic Li growth. The mechanistic investigations suggest the crystal facet (111) of LiBr provides high adsorption energy and low diffusion barriers for Li+ ions. The incorporation of LiBr into SEI guarantees the stable cycling of Li irrespective of with ether or carbonate electrolytes, and the SEI is endurable at extremely low or high temperatures. The symmetric cell of the LiBr modified Li delivers a long lifespan of 2400 h with an overpotential less than 15 mV at 0.5 mA cm‐2, 1 mAh cm‐2. When paired with commercial cathodes, decent cycling retention and rate capability are available as well. This work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the development of stable Li‐metal batteries.

Abstract:The growing demand for low-cost, sustainable, and energy-dense energy storage devices has spurred intensive investigations into post-lithium battery systems. Rechargeable chloride-based batteries with chloride anions as charge carriers are promising candidates for electrochemical energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical volumetric energy density and the natural abundance of chloride-containing materials. This review provides an integrated understanding of the evolution of various chloride-based battery systems, including rocking-chair batteries (RCBs), dual-ion batteries (DIBs), and other emerging chloride-based batteries. The operating principles, battery performance metrics, and electrochemical features of the chloride anion storage materials are discussed in detail. Finally, the perspectives for possible future efforts in this field are analyzed to promote progress in the development of state-of-the-art chloride-based batteries with the expectation of providing guidelines for large-scale applications in the future.

Abstract:The lithium−oxygen (Li–O2) battery is considered as a promising candidate for the next-generation energy storage systems owing to its high theoretic specific energy. However, the slow kinetics of Li–O2 batteries cause a high charging overpotential, which leads to poor cyclability. Redox mediators are introduced as a promising tool to reduce the overpotentials of Li–O2 batteries. Unfortunately, the oxidized redox mediators can diffuse to the lithium anode and induce undesirable reactions. This so-called “shuttle effect” leads to the consumption of the redox mediators and the decrease of battery round-trip efficiency. In this work, an organic bromine, bromonitromethane (BrCH2NO2), can act bifunctionally as a redox mediator and a lithium anode protective layer-forming agent for Li–O2 batteries. It generates bromine ion (Br−) and in situ forms a lithium anode protective layer via reducing on lithium anode. This layer suppresses the shuttle effect and allows efficient lithium ion (Li+) transfer. The superior cycling performance of batteries containing BrCH2NO2 demonstrates that the suitable bifunctional redox mediator is important for highly efficient and stable Li–O2 batteries.

Rechargeable Ni-Li battery integrated aqueous/nonaqueous system

Abstract:A rechargeable Ni-Li battery, in which nickel hydroxide serving as a cathode in an aqueous electrolyte and Li metal serving as an anode in an organic electrolyte were integrated by a superionic conductor glass ceramic film (LISICON), was proposed with the expectation to combine the advantages of both a Li-ion battery and Ni-MH battery. It has the potential for an ultrahigh theoretical energy density of 935 Wh/kg, twice that of a Li-ion battery (414 Wh/kg), based on the active material in electrodes. A prototype Ni-Li battery fabricated in the present work demonstrated a cell voltage of 3.47 V and a capacity of 264 mAh/g with good retention during 50 cycles of charge/discharge. This battery system with a hybrid electrolyte provides a new avenue for the best combination of electrode/electrolyte/electrode to fulfill the potential of high energy density as well as high power density.

Abstract:Current rechargeable batteries generally display limited cycle life and slow electrode kinetics and contain environmentally unfriendly components. Furthermore, their operation depends on the redox reactions of metal elements. We present an original battery system that depends on the redox of I-/I-3(-) couple in liquid cathode and the reversible enolization in polyimide anode, accompanied by Li+ (or Na+) diffusion between cathode and anode through a Li+/Na+ exchange polymer membrane. There are no metal element-based redox reactions in this battery, and Li+ (or Na+) is only used for charge transfer. Moreover, the components (electrolyte/electrode) of this system are environment-friendly. Both electrodes are demonstrated to have very fast kinetics, which gives the battery a supercapacitor-like high power. It can even be cycled 50,000 times when operated within the electrochemical window of 0 to 1.6 V. Such a system might shed light on the design of high-safety and low-cost batteries for grid-scale energy storage.

Abstract:Crystalline LiV3O8 and LiMn2O4 were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Cyclic voltammetry technique was employed to evaluate the electrochemical behaviors of LiV3O8 and LiMn2O4 in 2mol/l Li2SO4 aqueous solution, and the results show that both LiV3O8 and LiMn2O4 are very stable in this aqueous electrolyte and can be used as the negative and positive electrode material without evident hydrogen or oxygen evolution. An aqueous rechargeable lithium battery (ARLB) was fabricated by using the above two intercalation compounds as the negative and positive electrodes. This battery exhibits good cycling behavior and the average discharge voltage is about 1.04V.

Abstract:Abstract High energy density all-solid-state rechargeable batteries with excellent safety are considered as reliable alternative to the current lithium-ion battery. The major challenge of all-solid-state rechargeable batteries is to develop new electrolyte materials with high conductivity and good stability against lithium. In this work, argyrodite electrolytes Li5.4PS4.4Cl1.6-xBrx (0≤x≤0.8) are synthesized through a wet-milling method. Benefit from a higher concentration of Br and the lattice softening of crystal structure, Li5.4PS4.4Cl1.2Br0.4 electrolyte with the highest lithium ion conductivity of 8.17 mS cm-1 is realized. The Li/Li5.4PS4.4Cl1.2Br0.4/Li symmetric battery can stable cycle for 2500 h at 0.1 mA cm-2, showing favorable stability against lithium. The assembled LiCoO2/Li5.4PS4.4Cl1.2Br0.4/Li battery delivers an initial reversible capacity of 122.4 mAh g-1 with a capacity retention of 82.8% after 100 cycles. These results demonstrate a promising argyrodite electrolyte Li5.4PS4.4Cl1.2Br0.4 with high ionic conductivity and favorable electrochemical stability for all-solid-state lithium battery.
