Abstract:High-performance, cost-efficient electrolyte systems are sought after for high-energy-density multivalent metal batteries. However, the expensive precursor and complex synthesis process hinders exploration of cathode electrode/electrolyte interfaces and solvation structures. Here we developed a universal cation replacement method to prepare low-cost, high-reversibility magnesium and calcium electrolytes derived from a zinc organoborate solvation structure. By rationally adjusting the precursor chain length and F-substitution degree, we can fine tune anion participation in the primary solvation shell. A completely dissociated Mg organoborate electrolyte enables high current endurance and enhanced electrochemical kinetics, whereas the Ca organoborate electrolyte with strong coordination/B–H inclusion offers a stable solid–electrolyte interphase with high coulombic efficiency. A rechargeable 53.4 Wh kg −1 Mg metal prototype is achieved with a 30 μm Mg anode, a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (E/S = 5.58 μl mg −1 ) and a modified separator/interlayer. This work provides innovative strategies for reversible electrolyte systems and high-energy-density multivalent metal batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries are regarded as a promising multi-valent battery system for low-cost and sustainable energy storage applications. Boron-based magnesium salts with terminal substituent fluorinated anions (Mg[B(ORF)4]2, RF = fluorinated alkyl) have exhibited impressive electrochemical stability. Nevertheless, their deployment is hindered by the complicated synthesis routes and the surface passivation of Mg anode. Herein, we report the design of an advanced electrolyte formulation comprised of B(HFIP)3 and I2 in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), which eventually convert into a Mg[B(HFIP)4]2/DME-MgI2 electrolyte system upon interacting with Mg anode. The Mg anode reacts with I2 and the electron-accepting B(HFIP)3, leading to the in-situ formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase layer composed of MgF2 and MgI2 species that can facilitate fast and stable Mg plating/stripping. Compared with the pristine Mg[B(HFIP)4]2/DME electrolyte, the Mg[B(HFIP)4]2/DME-MgI2 electrolyte exhibited superior electrochemical performance including an ultra-low overpotential (~80 mV), high Coulombic efficiency and a long-cycling period over 1500 h. In result, the rechargeable magnesium batteries with Mg[B(HFIP)4]2/DME-MgI2 electrolyte and Mo6S8 cathode show outstanding compatibility, rapid kinetics, and stable cyclability for over 1200 cycles, surpassing all previously reported boron-based electrolytes. This work introduces a promising halogen-enhancement strategy for boron-based Mg-ion electrolytes and is pivotal for the advancement and optimization of multi-valent secondary batteries.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) batteries represent a promising candidate for energy-dense, sustainable and safe energy storage. However, the realization of practical Mg batteries remains challenging and advanced material design strategies are imperatively necessary. Herein, a novel magnesium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate-based non-corrosive gel polymer electrolyte has been synthesized by an in-situ polymerization. This gel polymer electrolyte exhibits unprecedented electrolytic properties in terms of high ionic conductivity (10−3 S cm−1), reversible Mg plating/stripping capability (Coulombic efficiency ∼99%, 1000 cycles) and low voltage polarization. Simultaneously, the polymeric matrix can prevent dissolution and diffusion of soluble electrode materials. For the first time, the employment of a gel polymer electrolyte to suppress the polysulfide shuttle in Mg−S batteries has been demonstrated. Moreover, it can be extended to other polymer backbones and incorporated with other cathodes for improving battery performance.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) based on two-electron transfer chemistry offer great opportunities for realizing high energy density storage technology. However, the lack of magnesium-compatible electrolytes is still the biggest research and development challenge. Boron-based electrolytes, as a viable solution, have always been plagued by complex synthesis processes and high costs. In this work, an efficient boron-based electrolyte was present by a facile one-step mixed reaction of MgCl 2 , triphenyl borate [B(OPh) 3 ], and tris(pentafluorophenyl)boron (TPFPB) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). By adjusting the composition and ratio of boron-based salts in the electrolyte, a modified anion structure with lower HOMO states was obtained. Besides, the as-prepared electrolyte also contributes to the formation of MgF 2 -rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, which significantly inhibits the electrolyte decomposition, enhance the cycling stability of Mg anodes. Eventually, the electrolyte exhibits a wide electrochemical window (>3 V vs Mg/Mg 2+ ), low polarization voltage (150 mV) and an average Coulombic efficiency above 98 %. Finally, the successful assembly of the Mg/CuS and Mg/Mo 6 S 8 full batteries confirms the practicability of this electrolyte in RMBs. More importantly, the dual regulation strategy of anions and interfaces offers a novel idea for designing efficient electrolytes in RMBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium/sulfur (Mg/S) battery is widely regarded as one of the most promising candidates for post-lithium batteries. However, a key factor restricting its application is the lack of a proper Mg electrolyte. Herein, we developed a coordination pre-protection strategy to synthesize a mono-magnesium ion, non-nucleophilic electrolyte capable of highly reversible Mg electrodeposition (up to 100% coulombic efficiency), enduring high current density (5 mA cm(-2)), and enabling a stable electrochemical potential window over 3.5 V at room temperature. Using the as-prepared electrolyte, Mg/S cells with a good cycling stability over 100 cycles were achieved. For the first time, in-situ microscopic observation of the electrochemical magnesium deposition/stripping process in this new electrolyte was investigated.

Abstract:A non‐passsivating and chlorine‐free Mg(CF3SO3)2‐based electrolyte with 2‐methoxyethylamine (MOEA) is designed via tailoring solvation and interface chemistry. The MOEA features suppressed side reactions and accelerated Mg2+ transportation with competing desolvation at the interfacial layer of anode/cathode. This work emphasizes the collocation strategy of magnesium salts and solvents as well as cationic/anionic solvation in the investigation of rechargeable magnesium batteries. Non‐passivating and chlorine‐free electrolytes are crucial for making rechargeable magnesium batteries practically feasible. Rational design of a brand‐new electrolyte should balance both Mg salt and solvent considering that the interfacial reactions occurring at electrolyte/electrode interface involve with ion solvation structure. Herein, nitrogenous 2‐methoxyethylamine (MOEA) is employed as co‐solvent to regulate the coordination behavior of cations/anions in Mg(CF3SO3)2‐G2 electrolyte after a series of screenings, which enables significantly ameliorated physiochemical properties. In‐depth insight on the mechanism of MOEA participating in the solvation structure formation and interfacial reactions is deduced via density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The decompositions of MOEA‐tailored cationic/anionic complexes shield Mg anode and Mo6S8 cathode with Mg3N2 and CxNy‐rich layers, respectively, which enable to suppress side reaction and accelerate Mg2+ transportation with competing desolvation at the interfacial layer. All the merits endow remarkable performances of symmetric/asymmetric cells with ultralong‐cycle lives over 5000 h and a remarkable average Coulombic efficiency of 98.3% after 8200 cycles (≈11 months), respectively. Additionally, a cheerful discharge capacity of ≈59.3 mAh g−1 is obtained over 1000 cycles at 0.5 C in Mo6S8||Mg full cell.

Abstract:Non-flow aqueous zinc-bromine batteries without auxiliary components (e.g., pumps, pipes, storage tanks) and ion-selective membranes represent a cost-effective and promising technology for large-scale energy storage. Unfortunately, they generally suffer from serious diffusion and shuttle of polybromide (Br-, Br3 -) due to the weak physical adsorption between soluble polybromide and host carbon materials, which results in low energy efficiency and poor cycling stability. Here, we develop a novel self-capture organic bromine material (1,1′-bis[3-(trimethylammonio)propyl]-4,4′-bipyridinium bromine, NVBr4) to successfully realize reversible solid complexation of bromide components for stable non-flow zinc-bromine battery applications. The quaternary ammonium groups (NV4+ ions) can effectively capture the soluble polybromide species based on strong chemical interaction and realize reversible solid complexation confined within the porous electrodes, which transforms the conventional "liquid-liquid" conversion of soluble bromide components into "liquid-solid" model and effectively suppresses the shuttle effect. Thereby, the developed non-flow zinc-bromide battery provides an outstanding voltage platform at 1.7 V with a notable specific capacity of 325 mAh g-1 NVBr4 (1 A g-1), excellent rate capability (200 mAh g-1 NVBr4 at 20 A g-1), outstanding energy density of 469.6 Wh kg-1 and super-stable cycle life (20000 cycles with 100% Coulombic efficiency), which outperforms most of reported zinc-halogen batteries. Further mechanism analysis and DFT calculations demonstrate that the chemical interaction of quaternary ammonium groups and bromide species is the main reason for suppressing the shuttle effect. The developed strategy can be extended to other halogen batteries to obtain stable charge storage.

The impressive battery performances are originated from the stabilized MgCl2 formation on high-surface-area carbon cathode and suppressed Mg anode corrosion via the Mg-induced solvation effect. Mg/SOCl2 primary batteries are promising candidates for low-cost and recyclable power supplies, and they thus open new avenues for the development of sustainable battery chemistries.

Abstract:Nonaqueous rechargeable magnesium (Mg) batteries suffer from the complicated and moisture-sensitive electrolyte chemistry. Besides electrolytes, the practicality of a Mg battery is also confined by the absence of high-performance electrode materials due to the intrinsically slow Mg2+ diffusion in the solids. In this work, we demonstrated a rechargeable aqueous magnesium ion battery (AMIB) concept of high energy density, fast kinetics, and reversibility. Using a superconcentration approach we expanded the electrochemical stability window of the aqueous electrolyte to 2.0 V. More importantly, two new Mg ion host materials, Li superconcentration approach we expanded the electrochemical stability window of the aqueous electrolyte to 2.0 V. More importantly, two new Mg ion host materials, Li3V2(PO4)3 and poly pyromellitic dianhydride, were developed and employed as cathode and anode electrodes, respectively. Based on comparisons of the aqueous and nonaqueous systems, the role of water is identified to be critical in the Mg ion mobility in the intercalation host but remaining little detrimental to its non-diffusion controlled process. Compared with the previously reported Mg ion cell delivers an unprecedented high power density of 6400 W kg ion cell delivers an unprecedented high power density of 6400 W kg while retaining 92% of the initial capacity after 6000 cycles, pushing the Mg ion cell to a brand new stage.

Abstract:A novel boron based electrolyte system based on reaction of tri(3,5-dimethylphenyl)borane (Mes3B) and PhMgCl in THF solution is proposed for the potential application in rechargeable magnesium battery. The optimized composition of Mes3B-(PhMgCl)2/THF electrolyte solution presents high ionic conductivity(ca. 2×10−3S/cm in 0.5M solution) at room temperature, excellent Mg deposition reversibility as well as the highest anodic potential to date (3.5V vs. Mg RE). The initial results indicate that the high-performance of the Mes3B–(PhMgCl)2 electrolyte might be attributed to non-covalent interactions arising from the excess amount of Grignard reagent PhMgCl. This study opens the door to the development of boron based electrolyte chemistry for high-energy rechargeable Mg batteries.

Abstract:This work is developed an advanced non‐nucleophilic Mg(AlCl4)2‐IL‐DME‐M4 electrolyte and suitable MoS2@CMK/S cathode. Due to the in situ formation of advantageous MgF2 containing SEI at Mg/electrolyte interface, the assembled Mg/S batteries are delivered the highest capacity of 1210 mAh g‐1 at 0.1 C and exhibited excellent long‐term cycling stability with reversible capacity of 370 mAh g‐1 at 1.0 C for 600 cycles. Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are considered as one of the most promising candidates for next‐generation batteries. However, the popularization of RMBs is seriously plagued due to the lack of suitable non‐nucleophilic electrolytes and the passivation of Mg anode. Herein, a novel non‐nucleophilic electrolyte is developed by introducing (s)‐1‐methoxy‐2‐propylamine (M4) into themagnesium aluminum chloride complex (MACC)‐like electrolyte. The as‐synthesizes Mg(AlCl4)2‐IL‐DME‐M4 electrolyte enables robust reversible cycling of Mg plating/stripping with low overpotential, high anodic stability, and ionic conductivity (8.56 mS cm−1). These features should be mainly attributed to the in situ formation of an MgF2 containing Mg2+‐conducting interphase, which dramatically suppresses the passivation and parasitic reaction of Mg anode with electrolyte. Remarkably, the Mg/S batteries assemble with as‐synthesize electrolyte and a new type MoS2@CMK/S cathode deliver unprecedented electrochemical performance. Specifically, the Mg/S battery exhibited the highest reversible capacity up to 1210 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, excellent rate capability and satisfactory long‐term cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 370 mAh g−1 (coulombic efficiency of ≈100%) at 1.0 C for 600 cycles. The study findings provide a novel strategy and inspiration for designing efficient non‐nucleophilic Mg electrolyte and suitable sulfur‐host materials for practical Mg/S battery applications.

Abstract:halogen containing electrolytes for Mg battery are apt to corrode conventional metal current collectors. In this paper, a new type of halogen-free boron based electrolyte (Mg[Mes(3)BPh](2)/THF) is designed and prepared. Electrochemical tests show that this electrolyte system possesses high ion conductivity (1.5 x 10(-3) S cm(-1)) and good Mg deposition-dissolution reversibility. More importantly, the same electrochemical window (2.6 V vs. Mg RE) of the electrolyte on Pt and stainless steel electrodes indicates that halogen-free electrolyte indeed lessens the corrosion to conventional metal current collectors. The surface morphologies of stainless steel, aluminum and copper are further observed after their anodic potentiostatic polarization in 0.25 mol L-1 Mg[Mes(3)BPh](2)/THE electrolyte solution for 2 days. A comparison with halogen containing electrolytes proves that the presence of halogen in electrolyte is the reason for corrosion. Abstract:Recently, we have developed a boron based electrolyte system with outstanding electrochemical performance, formed through the reaction of tri(3,5-dimethylphenyl)borane (Mes(3)B) and PhMgCl in THF, for rechargeable magnesium batteries. In this paper, the main components and equilibria of the unique boron based electrolyte solutions are identified by NMR, single-crystal XRD, etc. The results prove that the solutions contain various magnesium species, such as Mg2Cl3+, MgCl+, Ph2Mg and the tetracoordinated boron anion [Mes(3)BPh](-). Fluorescence spectra and Raman spectroscopy analyses indicate that the high anodic stability (ca. 3.5 V vs. Mg reference electrode (RE)) of the Mes(3)B-(PhMgCl)(2) electrolyte is attributed to the non-covalent interactions between the anion [Mes(3)BPh](-) and Ph2Mg. Furthermore, the air sensitivity of the boron based electrolyte and its electrochemical stability on the different current collectors are studied. Finally, the reversible electrochemical process of Mg intercalation into a Mo6S8 cathode confirms that the boron based electrolyte could be practically used in rechargeable Mg battery systems.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are considered the promising candidates for post lithium-ion batteries due to the abundant storage, high capacity, and dendrite-rare characteristic of Mg anode. However, the lack of practical electrolytes impedes the development and application of RMBs. Here, through a one-step reaction of LiCl congenital-containing Knochel-Hauser base TMPL (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinylmagnesium chloride lithium chloride complex) with Lewis acid AlCl 3 , we successfully synthesized an efficient amino-magnesium halide TMPLA electrolyte. Raman and mass spectroscopy identified that the electrolyte comprises the typical di-nuclear copolymer [Mg 2 Cl 3 ·6THF] + cation group and [(TMP) 2 AlCl 2 ] − anion group, further supported by the results of density functional theory calculations (DFT) and the Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The TMPLA electrolyte exhibits promising electrochemical performance, including available anodic stability (>2.65 V vs. SS), high ionic conductivity (6.05 mS cm −1 ), and low overpotential (<0.1 V) as well as appropriate Coulombic efficiency (97.3%) for Mg plating/stripping. Both the insertion Mo 6 S 8 cathode and conversion CuS cathode delivered a desirable electrochemical performance with high capacity and good cycling stability based on the TMPLA electrolyte. In particular, when compatible with low cost and easily synthesized CuS, the CuS||Mg cell displayed an extremely high discharge capacity of 458.8 mAh g −1 for the first cycle and stabilized at 170.2 mAh g −1 with high Coulombic efficiency (99.1%) after 50 cycles at 0.05 C. Our work proposes an efficient electrolyte with impressive compatibility with Mg anode and insertion/conversion cathode for practical RMBs and provides a more profound knowledge of the Lewis acid-base reaction mechanisms.

Abstract:Thanks to the low cost, free dendritic hazards, and high volumetric capacity, magnesium (Mg)-ion batteries have attracted increasing attention as alternative energy storage devices to lithium-ion batteries. Despite the successful development of electrode materials, the real-life application potential of Mg-ion full battery systems (MIFBSs) is largely hindered by the lack of suitable electrode couples and hence low diffusion kinetics, which induce low specific capacity, poor rate performance, and low working voltage. Herein, we report an aqueous rechargeable MIFBS by employing copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) as the cathode and 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic acid diimide (PTCDI) as the anode in 1 moL L-1 MgCl2 electrolyte. The combination of PTCDI//CuHCF allows efficient redox and convenient intercalation/deintercalation of Mg2+ at the electrodes while facilitating a fast transfer of Mg2+ between the two electrodes. As a result, the system delivers a high capacity of ∼120.3 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 after 200 operation cycles with a broadened voltage range (0-1.95 V) and maintains a capacity of ∼97.8 mAh g-1 at 2.0 A g-1 after 1000 cycles. Even at a high current density of 5.0 A g-1, the battery provides a steady capacity of ∼81.4 mAh g-1 over 5000 cycles. Moreover, after being applied at 11.0 A g-1, the system can deliver a capacity of ∼126.5 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1. This work emphasizes the great promise of developing suitable electrode couples for aqueous MIFBSs to achieve high capacity and high rate.

Abstract:Magnesium rechargeable batteries potentially offer high-energy density, safety, and low cost due to the ability to employ divalent, dendrite-free, and earth-abundant magnesium metal anode. Despite recent progress, further development remains stagnated mainly due to the sluggish scission of magnesium-chloride bond and slow diffusion of divalent magnesium cations in cathodes. Here we report a battery chemistry that utilizes magnesium monochloride cations in expanded titanium disulfide. Combined theoretical modeling, spectroscopic analysis, and electrochemical study reveal fast diffusion kinetics of magnesium monochloride cations without scission of magnesium-chloride bond. The battery demonstrates the reversible intercalation of 1 and 1.7 magnesium monochloride cations per titanium at 25 and 60 °C, respectively, corresponding to up to 400 mAh g −1 capacity based on the mass of titanium disulfide. The large capacity accompanies with excellent rate and cycling performances even at room temperature, opening up possibilities for a variety of effective intercalation hosts for multivalent-ion batteries.
Chloride-Free Electrolyte Based on Tetrabutylammonium Triflate Additive for Extended Anodic Stability in Magnesium Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have been proposed as a promising alternative to currently commercialized lithium-ion batteries. However, Mg anode passivation in conventional electrolytes necessitates the use of highly corrosive Cl- ions in the electrolyte. Herein for the first time, we design a chloride-free electrolyte for RMBs with magnesium bis(hexamethyldisilazide) (Mg(HMDS)2) and magnesium triflate (Mg(OTf)2) as the main salts and tetrabutylammonium triflate (TBAOTf) as an additive. The TBAOTf additive improved the dissolution of Mg salts, consequently enhancing the charge-carrying species in the electrolyte. COMSOL studies further revealed desirable Mg growth in our modulated electrolyte, substantiated by homogeneous electric flux distribution across the electrolyte-electrode interface. Post-mortem chemical composition analysis uncovered a MgF2-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that facilitated exceptional Mg deposition/dissolution reversibility. Our study illustrates a highly promising strategy for synthesizing a corrosion-free and reversible Mg battery electrolyte with a widened anodic stability window of up to 4.43 V.

Abstract:Polymer electrolytes play a crucial role in advancing rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) owing to their exceptional characteristics, including high flexibility, superior interface compatibility, broad electrochemical stability window, and enhanced safety features. Despite these advantages, research in this domain remains nascent, plagued by single preparation approaches and challenges associated with the compatibility between polymer electrolytes and Mg metal anode. In this study, we present a novel synthesis strategy to fabricate a glycerol α,α'-diallyl ether-3,6-dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol-based polymer electrolyte supported by glass fiber substrate (GDT@GF) through anion modification and thiol-ene click chemistry polymerization. The developed route exhibits novelty and high efficiency, leading to the production of GDT@GF membranes featuring exceptional mechanical properties, heightened ionic conductivity, elevated Mg2+ transference number, and commendable compatibility with Mg anode. The assembled modified Mo6S8||GDT@GF||Mg cells exhibit outstanding performance across a wide temperature range and address critical safety concerns, showcasing the potential for applications under extreme conditions. Our innovative preparation strategy offers a promising avenue for the advancement of polymer electrolytes in high-performance rechargeable magnesium batteries, while also opens up possibilities for future large-scale applications and the development of flexible electronic devices.
