Abstract:We report an ultrathin Au transparent electrode with the thickness of only 4.4 nm based on an S-1805/Ag hybrid nucleation layer and its application in flexible organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) as the replacement of indium tin oxide (ITO) anode. The Volmer-Weber growth mode of the deposited Au film has been suppressed successfully by using the hybrid nucleation layer, in which the S-1805 acts as a substrate modification layer and 0.6 nm Ag acts as a seeding layer. The resulting ultrathin Au film with the thickness of 4.4 nm shows high transparency, high conductivity, and ultrasmooth surface. A 25% improvement in efficiency has been demonstrated for the OLEDs with ultrathin Au anodes compared to the ITO-based devices. The application of the high-performance ultrathin Au electrodes in OLEDs results in high flexibility and mechanical robustness with small performance variations after 2100 bending cycles with a 7.5 mm bending radius.

Abstract:We demonstrate highly flexible and efficient top-emitting organic light-emitting devices (TOLEDs) by using an ultrasmooth Ag anode. A template-stripping process has been employed to create the ultrasmooth Ag anode on a photopolymer substrate. The flexible TOLEDs obtained by this method keep good electroluminescence properties under a small bending radius and after repeated bending. The efficiency of the flexible TOLEDs is improved by 60% compared with the conventional TOLEDs deposited on Si substrate due to the enhanced hole injection from the ultrasmooth anode.
PFSA-passivated silver nanowire transparent electrodes for highly flexible organic-light-emitting devices with improved stability

Abstract:Instability and large wire-wire contact resistance of silver nanowires (AgNWs) have seriously hindered their practical applications as electrodes in optoelectronic devices. Although various methods have been demonstrated to improve the stability and conductivity of the AgNWs, a simple and low-cost process, especially compatible to the flexible substrates for their applications in flexible devices, is still a challenge. Here, perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer has been employed as a surface-passivation layer on the AgNWs through a simple surface coating. The PFSA passivation can simultaneously improve the conductivity, thermal stability and mechanical stability of the AgNWs. As a result, the PFSA-passivated AgNWs film maintains an almost constant conductivity under ambient condition after heating for 30 min at 250 °C or 10 days storage at room temperature, and 600 continuous bending cycles at a bending radius of 1 mm. The PFSA-passivated AgNWs have been applied to flexibly organic light emitting devices as their electrodes, and both mechanical stability and long-term operational stability have been improved.

Abstract:Flexible organic solar cells (OSCs) are very promising for use in portable power supply devices due to the advantages of low‐cost, light‐weight, and flexibility. However, the efficiencies of flexible OSCs are limited by the flexible transparent electrodes owing to their nonoptimal electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. To address these challenges, leaf‐like biomimetic electrodes are proposed to achieve an efficient light capture and glossy surface for a high‐efficiency flexible OSC. To mimic the internal anatomy of the leaf, the conformable electrode stack consists of a flexible polyimide substrate, light‐scattering polystyrene spheres, zinc oxide protecting layer, and electrically conductive silver nanowires to obtain a high transmittance, low sheet resistance, and low surface roughness. A record‐high power conversion efficiency of 16.1% is realized by a flexible OSC with the biomimetic electrode design, comparable to those rigid devices on glass. Moreover, the flexible OSC on this biomimetic electrode exhibits a robust bendability against flexural strain, retaining 85% of the initial efficiency after 5000 bending cycles at a radius of curvature as small as 1.0 mm.

Abstract:We demonstrate highly flexible and efficient organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) using an ultra-smooth NAN anode. A template-stripping process was employed to create an ultra-smooth NAN anode on a photopolymer substrate. The flexible OLEDs obtained by this method maintained good electroluminescent properties and mechanical stability after bending. The efficiency of the flexible OLEDs was improved by 30.6% compared with conventional OLEDs deposited on PET/ITO substrate due to the enhanced hole injection from the ultra-smooth anode.

Abstract:Transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) have attracted considerable attentions as one of the essential components in optoelectronic devices. High conductivity, transmittance and flexibility are required for the practical applications of the TCEs in wearable and portable electronics. Here, a simple fabrication process of capillary force-induced printing has been developed to realize highly aligned silver nanowires (AgNWs) film with high flexibility, stretchability and conformability. Ultrathin and skin-attachable OLEDs have been realized based on the aligned AgNWs electrode. This work has proposed a low-cost and fast fabrication strategy to realize highly aligned AgNWs electrode for the flexible and stretchable optoelectronic devices.
Printed Light-Trapping Nanorelief Cu Electrodes for Full-Solution-Processed Flexible Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Light-trapping nanorelief metal electrodes have been proven to be an effective approach to improve the absorption performance of flexible organic solar cells (FOSCs). These nanorelief electrodes have been made by conventional vacuum deposition techniques, which are difficult to integrate with roll-to-roll fabrication processes. To address this challenge, this paper reports, for the first time, the fabrication of highly conductive nanorelief Cu electrodes on the flexible substrates through solution printing and polymer-assisted metal deposition at room temperature in the air. FOSCs made with these printed nanorelief Cu electrodes possess not only much improved power conversion efficiency, by 13.5%, but also significant enhancement in flexibility when compared with those made with flat Cu electrodes. Because of the low material and fabrication cost, these printed nanorelief Cu electrodes show great promise in roll-to-roll fabrication of FOSCs in the future.

Abstract:Here, a smooth reflective Ag cathode integrated on fabric by one‐step silver mirror reaction and a composite transparent anode of polydimethylsiloxane/silver nanowires/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) via a water‐assisted peeling method are presented, both of which possess excellent optoelectrical properties and robust mechanical flexibility. The Fa‐TPLEDs are constructed by spin‐coating functional layers on the bottom reflective cathodes and laminating the top transparent anodes. Low‐cost fabric‐based top‐emitting polymer light‐emitting devices (Fa‐TPLEDs) have aroused increasing attention due to their remarkable potential applications in wearable displays. However, it is still challenging to realize efficient all‐solution‐processed devices from bottom electrodes to top electrodes with large‐scale fabrication. Here, a smooth reflective Ag cathode integrated on fabric by one‐step silver mirror reaction and a composite transparent anode of polydimethylsiloxane/silver nanowires/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) via a water‐assisted peeling method are presented, both of which possess excellent optoelectrical properties and robust mechanical flexibility. The Fa‐TPLEDs are constructed by spin‐coating functional layers on the bottom reflective cathodes and laminating the top transparent anodes. The Fa‐TPLEDs show a current efficiency of 16.3 cd A−1, an external quantum efficiency of 4.9% and angle‐independent electroluminescence spectra. In addition, the Fa‐TPLEDs possess excellent mechanical stability, maintaining a current efficiency of 14.3 cd A−1 after 200 bending cycles at a radius of 4 mm. The results demonstrate that the integration of solution‐processed reflective cathodes and transparent anodes sheds light on a new avenue to construct low‐cost and efficient fabric‐based devices, showing great potential applications in emerging smart flexible/wearable electronics.

Abstract:Stretchable optoelectronics represent an emerging technology featuring soft mechanical properties. The advancements in this active area rely on the development of compliant electronic materials. Currently, the deformable forms of light-emitting devices often exhibit double-side emissions due to the lack of stretchable reflective electrodes. This study reports a facile procedure to deposit smooth and uniform liquid metal films over large-area elastomeric substrates as stretchable reflective electrodes. The as-prepared electrodes exhibit low sheet resistance (0.15 Ω sq–1), high optical reflectance (95% at 550 nm), and ultrahigh deformability (500% strain). The electrode shows sufficient durability to survive repetitive tensile deformations. Successful implementation of a liquid metal electrode in a stretchable light-emitting device achieves single-side emission with enhanced light extraction. Abstract:An ultra-smooth Ag film with sub-nanometer surface roughness on a flexible substrate has been fabricated by a template-stripping process and its effect on the carrier injection and transport in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) has been investigated. The use of the ultra-smooth Ag film as an electrode results in both enhanced carried injection due to the improved contact between the electrode and the organic layer and enhanced carrier transport due to the larger grain size of the deposited organic layer on it. The ultra-smooth Ag film on the flexible substrate has been applied in inverted top-emitting OLEDs (ITOLEDs) as cathode, which exhibit improved efficiency due to the enhanced electron injection and transport. The maximum current efficiency of the ITOLEDs on the flexible substrate is 9.72 cd A(-1), whereas it is 6.03 cd A(-1) for the devices on the conventional Si substrate, which corresponds to about a 62% enhancement. Moreover, the flexible ITOLEDs keep their good performance under a small bending radius and after repeated bending.

Abstract:Abstract Transparent electrodes (TEs) with high chemical stability and excellent flexibility are critical for flexible optoelectronic devices, such as photodetectors, solar cells, and light-emitting diodes. Ultrathin metal electrode (thickness less than 20 nm) has been a promising TE candidate, but the fabrication can only be realized by vacuum-based technologies to date, and require tedious surface engineering of the substrates, which are neither ideal for polymeric based flexible applications nor suitable for roll-to-roll large-scale manufacture. This paper presents high-performance nanostructured transparent metal electrodes formation via displacement–diffusion-etch (DDE) process, which enables the solution-processed sub-20-nm-thick ultrathin gold electrodes (UTAuEs) on a wide variety of hard and soft substrates. UTAuEs fabricated on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates show a high chemical/environmental stability and superior bendability to commercial flexible indium–tin-oxide (ITO) electrodes. Moreover, flexible organic solar cells made with UTAuEs show similar power conversion efficiency but much enhanced flexibility, in comparison to that of ITO-based devices.

Abstract:We report a highly flexible ultrathin Au grid with high mechanical robustness as transparent electrode for flexible organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). The grids are introduced to an ultrathin Au film to improve its optical transmittance and mechanical performance. With the line width of 15 μm and the gap width of 30 μm, the optimal ultrathin Au grid presents a desirable transmittance of 88.7% at 550 nm and a sheet resistance of 36 Ω/sq. Owing to the reduced tensile stress by the ultrathin grid patterns, the flexible ultrathin Au grid exhibits extraordinary mechanical stability with maintained conductivity after 48 000 bending cycles under a bending radius of 1 mm. Flexible OLEDs with high flexibility and mechanical robustness have been obtained using the ultrathin Au grid as the transparent anode by maintaining 92% initial efficiency after 4200 bending cycles. Moreover, flexible OLEDs exhibit a significantly improved current efficiency in comparison to the devices based on the continuous Au or traditional ITO anode.

Abstract:An ultrathin, ultrasmooth and flexible Au film as an alternative of the indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) has been reported. The 7 nm Au film shows excellent surface morphology, optical and electronic characteristics including a root-mean-square roughness of 0.35 nm, a high transparency of 72% at 550 nm, and a sheet resistance of 23.75 Ω sq(-1). These features arise from the surface modification of the glass substrate by using a SU-8 film, which fixes metal atoms via chemical bond interactions between Au and SU-8 film to suppress the island growth mode. A 17% enhancement in current efficiency has been obtained from the OLEDs based on the ultrathin Au electrodes compared to that of the devices with the ITO electrodes. The OLEDs with the ultrathin Au/SU-8 anodes exhibit high flexibility and mechanical robustness.

Abstract:Owing to their compatibility with biology and large deformation, flexible electronics meet the demands for a wide range of applications that lie outside the capabilities of conventional rigid wafer‐based electronics. Devices such as solar cells, light‐emitting devices, touch screens, and wearable sensors have significantly advanced in recent years and changed human life. Flexible transparent electrodes are one of the most important components in flexible optoelectronic devices, collecting charges and transmitting light. Such electrodes based on silver nanowires (AgNWs), which exhibit superior mechanical flexibility, electrical and thermal conductivity, and optical transparency, are regarded as the most promising alternative to conventional indium tin oxide electrodes. However, some technical challenges, such as the uniformity and stability of AgNW networks, still exist and hinder the large‐scale commercialization of AgNW electrodes. Great efforts have been made in this field. A comprehensive survey of recent progress in flexible transparent AgNW electrodes in terms of performance criteria, material synthesis, fabrication process, performance enhancement, and future applications is provided. Finally, technical challenges and future trends are presented for the application of flexible transparent AgNW electrodes in flexible electronics.

Abstract:A generally applicable method has been developed for fabricating highly transparent ultrathin Ag films on both glass and plastic substrates using the self-assembled monolayer modified ZnO/Ag/ZnO tri-layer structure. The resulting films show remarkably low surface roughness with very high transparency (>80% between 400 and 600 nm) and low surface resistance (8.61 Omega/square). With an inverted architecture, the devices based on the SAM modified tri-layer UTMF electrode show superior performance and mechanical properties than those using ITO electrode on both glass and plastic substrates.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have received much attention in light-emitting applications during the past several years. The commonly used indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes in perovskite light-emitting devices (PeLEDs) have unavoidable drawbacks of increasing cost and incompatibility with flexible devices, which limit the development of PeLEDs. Here, high-performance and ITO-free flexible PeLEDs utilizing ultrathin Au electrodes have been achieved and exhibited high brightness (>10, 000 cdm(-2)). By introducing a MoO3/SU-8 modification layer, the ultrathin Au film with a thickness of 7 nm exhibits excellent surface morphology with a root-meansquare roughness value of 0.307 nm. Meanwhile, the ultrathin Au film demonstrates an outstanding optical property with transparency of 83% at the wavelength of 550 nm. Simultaneously, favorable conductivity with a sheet resistance of 13 Omega sq(-1) has been achieved. High mechanical robustness and flexibility have been obtained for the flexible PeLEDs by surviving 1000 bending cycles. Abstract:Despite widespread interest, ultrathin and highly flexible light-emitting devices that can be seamlessly integrated and used for flexible displays, wearables, and as bioimplants remain elusive. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with $\mu$m-scale thickness and exceptional flexibility have been demonstrated but show insufficient stability in air and moist environments due to a lack of suitable encapsulation barriers. Here, we demonstrate an efficient and stable OLED with a total thickness of $\approx$12 $\mu$m that can be fully immersed in water or cell nutrient media for weeks without suffering substantial degradation. The active layers of the device are embedded between conformal barriers formed by alternating layers of parylene-C and metal oxides that are deposited through a low temperature chemical vapour process. These barriers also confer stability of the OLED to repeated bending and to extensive postprocessing, e.g. via reactive gas plasmas, organic solvents, and photolithography. This unprecedented robustness opens up a wide range of novel possibilities for ultrathin OLEDs.

Abstract:We report a transparent ultrathin Ag nanomesh electrode fabricated by nanosphere lithography combined with a dielectric wetting layer, which is simple and cost-effective. Compared with the continuous ultrathin film Ag electrode, the nanomesh electrode exhibits a higher figure of merit (FOM = T10/Rs, T is the transmittance and Rs is the sheet resistance) of 3.01 × 10−3 Ω−1, which is due to the retained high electrical conductivity and nanopores as optical windows. The maximum luminance and current efficiency enhancement of organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) with an ultrathin Ag nanomesh electrode are up to 56.2% and 41.4% compared to that of conventional devices with an ITO anode. It is worth noting that the ultrathin Ag nanomesh electrode has been proved able to resolve the emission intensity roll-off of OLEDs with dual metal electrodes as the enlargement of viewing angle due to the redistribution of the light emission direction derived from strong scattering. More light emission at larger angles is of great value for lighting panel applications.

Abstract:The next generation of optoelectronic devices requires transparent conductive electrodes to be flexible, inexpensive and compatible with large scale manufacturing processes. We report an ultrasmooth, highly conductive and transparent composite electrode on a flexible photopolymer substrate by employing a template stripping method. A random silver nanowire (AgNW) network buried in poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film constituted the composite electrode. Besides the effectively decreased surface roughness, its sheet resistance and transmittance are comparable to those of conventional PEDOT:PSS electrode. As a result, the efficiency of the OLEDs based on the composite electrode exhibited 25% enhancement compared to the OLEDs with conventional PEDOT:PSS electrode. Moreover, the performance of the flexible OLEDs remains stable after over one hundred bending cycles.
