Abstract:This study investigated the optimal proportion of biochar derived from pinewood pellets (PW) and coke as reducing agents for the carbothermal reduction of iron ore at high temperatures. Thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, X-ray fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the raw materials. To determine the effect of biochar proportion on reduction efficiency, presented as metallization, metallized pellets were subjected to chemical analysis, including...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the use of pine wood biochar (PWC) as an environmentally - friendly reducing agent in the iron ore reduction process to replace traditional coke. The research determined the optimal ratio of PWC to coke and the optimal reduction conditions, including temperature and holding time, through experiments. Specifically, the research focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Development of Environment - Friendly Reducing Agents**: With the increasing contribution of the steel industry to energy consumption and carbon emissions, it is particularly important to find sustainable energy sources to replace fossil fuels. As a renewable resource, biochar has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint and is thus considered for use in the iron ore reduction process. 2. **Analysis of Biochar Characteristics**: The applicability and efficiency of pine wood biochar as a reducing agent were studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, X - ray fluorescence analysis and scanning electron microscopy. 3. **Evaluation of Reduction Effects**: The reduction efficiency of different ratios of biochar - coke mixtures at different temperatures and holding times was evaluated by chemical analysis, including total iron (T.Fe), metallic iron (M.Fe), residual Fe2O3 and FeO analysis. 4. **Determination of Optimal Reduction Conditions**: The research found that at a reduction temperature of 1300 °C, a holding time of 20 minutes, and a biochar - to - coke ratio of 80%:20%, the reduction efficiency is the highest, and the metallization rate exceeds 90%. 5. **Environmental Benefits**: The research also explored the potential impact of using biochar to replace part of the coke on reducing carbon consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, emphasizing the possibility of biochar in promoting the green development of the steel industry. In conclusion, this research experimentally verified that pine wood biochar is an effective and environmentally - friendly reducing agent in the iron ore reduction process, providing new ideas and technical support for the sustainable development of the steel industry.
